Winter perfume for ladies

Table of Contents

Top perfumes for women this winter: The most glamorous scents for your Christmas parties

Do you change your perfume with the season? While a heavier scent can be cloying in the summer sunshine, you can wear fragrances which are muskier, woodier and spicier when the mercury dips. Here is my pick of the top winter perfumes for women for any event this winter.

Of course, choosing a fragrance is a very individual choice. That’s why I’ve also tailored this winter’s perfume choices to suit your style personality. You may just find your new signature scent among these.

Choosing the best smelling perfume for you

Just as you are drawn to certain styles of clothing and accessories, you are likely to be attracted to particular styles of perfume.

You may prefer fragrances which are musky, floral or citrusy, for example. While you probably already have a favorite fragrance, it’s always fun to experiment with new styles, just as with the rest of your outfits.

Here, you will find an old favorite perfume for each style personality which you may already have discovered, as well as a newer fragrance you might like to try.

Winter perfumes for the minimal style personality

If you have a minimal style personality you are likely to be attracted to a perfume bottle with simple styling. Anything with packaging which is too flamboyant or ornate will be a ‘no’ even before you smell the fragrance inside.

As for the perfume itself, you like to keep your fragrance fresh and clean, and may also be drawn to unisex fragrances.

Old favorite: Clinique Aromatics in White

It really doesn’t get more minimal than this! If you have a minimal style personality, your home is likely to have a minimalist, Scandinavian style, and this bottle will fit right in.

If you haven’t already discovered it, Clinique Aromatics in White was released five years ago and it’s a fragrance which is pretty hard to pin down. At a first spray, the strongest smell is rose, but when it dries, amber takes over, with a hint of bitter violet.

Clinque Aromatics in White Eau de Parfum

Something new: Laboratory Perfumes Samphire

I love the styling of the Laboratory Perfumes bottles. They’re definitely minimal. This was actually launched around the same time as Clinique’s option, but I feel the Laboratory brand is less well known so you may not yet have discovered it.

Samphire blends juniper and verbena along with lavender, basil, rosemary and moss. It’s a clean smell, given depth through the use of white amber.

Laboratory Perfumes Samphire Eau de Toilette

Winter perfumes for the classic style personality

The classic style personality is likely to love all of the truly iconic perfumes from days gone by.

If you do try a new fragrance, you will probably stick to your favorite brand.

Old favorite: Chanel No. 5

If you are a classic style personality, you must surely have a bottle of Chanel No. 5 on your dressing table.

The first fragrance launched by Coco Chanel, the perfume and the bottle design are icons of design, having been created to appeal to the flappers of the 1920s.

Because it is such a complex blend, it smells wholly different on one woman to another.

CHANEL N°5 Eau de Parfum spray

Something new: Tory Burch Eau de Parfum

If you are thinking about trying something new this winter, how about a perfume from a brand which is definitely a baby in comparison to Chanel, but which has swiftly become known for classic design?

Tory Burch is already renowned for classic handbags and timeless shoes. The eponymous scent manages to be fresh and complex at the same time, with floral notes blended with citrusy tones.

Tory Burch Eau de Parfum spray

Winter perfumes for the natural style personality

The natural style personality may not wear a perfume at all. But, if you do, you will likely choose a fragrance which is light and fresh, and which reminds you of the natural world you love.

Old favorite: Clinique Happy

Created back in 1997, Clinique Happy is beautiful for either winter or summer. The apple notes keep it fresh, while there’s also a citrusy scent which reminds me of festive holidays.

Clinique Happy fragrance

Something new: Malin+Goetz Stem

I’m sure the styling here will appeal to the minimalists too, but this fragrance was made for you if you love a natural style.

The whole idea for this perfume is built around the often forgotten elements of the garden – such as freshly cut stems, crushed leaves and rich soil.

MALIN+GOETZ Stem Eau de Parfum

Winter perfumes for the romantic style personality

The romantic style personality will have any number of floral fragrances to choose from, along with beautifully styled bottles which will appeal to your aesthetic taste.

Old favorite: Gucci Bloom

A relative newcomer, but Gucci Bloom has fast become a classic for those who love their florals.

If I were to step into a garden in New Orleans, this is what I imagine it would smell like. There are notes of turberose and jasmine as well as rangoon creeper for a powdery note.

Gucci Bloom Eau de Parfum

Something new: Estée Lauder Beautiful Belle

Estée Lauder has a reputation for developing beautiful perfumes in beautiful bottles. If you are a fan of the original Beautiful perfume, have you tried the latest incarnation?

It works for all seasons as the marzipan musk, oriental notes and orange flower are all evocative of the holidays.

Estée Lauder Beautiful Belle Love Eau de Parfum spray

Perfume for women: Bohemian style

The bohemian style personality surely must have a perfume featuring patchouli, with its dark, musky aroma.

Old favorite: Kiehl’s Original Musk

Perfumes don’t come with much more history than this one, which can trace its roots back to the 1920’s.

A boho classic, it features fresh orange blossom as well as tonka bean, musk and white patchouli, which give it a rich sensual smell.

Kiehl’s Since 1851 Original Musk Eau de Toilette spray

Something new: Le Labo Tonka 25

At first glance, this bottle may look too light and fresh to be worn by a bohemian style personality who loves layers in both clothing and fragrance.

However, don’t let its looks fool you. It’s actually a rich, dark scent which reminds me of fallen autumn leaves.

Le Labo Tonka 25 Eau de Parfum

Best perfume for women: Eurochic style

The eurochic style personality is naturally inspired in outfit choices by European style, and traveling through the cities, coastline and countryside of the Mediterranean and beyond.

That’s why fragrances which have been inspired by Europe may be your perfect fit.

Old favorite: Estée Lauder Tuscany

What could be better than a scent evocative of a Tuscan villa as the sun goes down?

However, this fragrance also has notes that make it winter-ready, including vanilla and sandalwood.

Estée Lauder Tuscany Per Donna Eau de Parfum spray

Something new: Chanel Paris-Biarritz

Have you discovered this one yet? I can’t think of a more perfect fragrance for the Eurochic style personality.

Inspired by the Basque coast, it is crisp and refreshing; designed to evoke sea spray.

But it also reminds me of those crisp, cold winter days when the sun reflects off fallen snow.

CHANEL Paris-Biarritz Eau de Toilette

Popular perfumes for women: Rock chick style

The rock style personality may not wear perfume during the day, but probably loves a spritz of a fragrance which is dark, subversive and different in the evening.

Old favorite: Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium

This is one which could definitely transcend style personalities, and I’m sure the glamorous style personality would appreciate this too.

With glam-rock styling, this features notes of black coffee, white florals and vanilla.

Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium Eau de Parfum

Something new: Tom Ford Fabulous

Anything with a swear word on the label is bound to be subversive. But, don’t let the language put you off.

It’s actually a deep, rich fragrance that is sure to get you plenty of compliments.

It starts off with almond and vanilla scents, but you soon get a whiff of leather, amber and tonka bean.

Tom Ford Fabulous Eau de Parfum

Best fragrances for women: street/urban style

The street/urban style personality doesn’t like to wear what everyone else is wearing either in terms of fashion or perfume.

Like the minimalist style personality, you may like to opt for a unisex fragrance, and the styling of the bottle will also be important to you in making your choice.

Old favorite: Comme des Garcons 2

Created just before the turn of the Millennium, Comme des Garcons 2 is a unisex fragrance inspired by the Japanese art of calligraphy.

It’s so versatile you can wear it no matter what the season, and it’s totally unique.

There are definite notes of ink, but you can also smell incense, spice, patchouli and cedarwood.

Comme des Garçons 2 Eau de Toilette

Something new: Tom Ford Métallique

I’m sure the styling here will appeal to minimalists and the architectural style personality as well as those with an urban style.

Released this year, I think this is one of those fragrances you either love or hate.

An initial modern, metallic note gives way throughout the day to softer vanilla tones. Try it, and see what you think!

Tom Ford Métallique fragrance

Most popular perfumes: glamorous style

The glamorous style personality is sure to have a collection of perfume bottles on the dressing table.

For you, the design of the bottle is as important as what is inside.

Old favorite: Guerlain Shalimar

Arguably, the most glamorous bottle there is, Shalimar was first created in the 1920’s. It was inspired at the time by the woman for whom the Taj Mahal was built.

One of the most famous perfumes ever, you have to try it at least once.

Powdery when you first apply, it dries down to a smoky tonka bean and vanilla fragrance that will forever be associated with “bad girl” flappers of the 1920’s.

Guerlain Shalimar perfume

Something new: Cartier La Panthére

From one dramatic bottle to another, La Panthére was the nickname for Cartier’s lover and muse.

A sensual fragrance ideal for evening parties, it definitely shouts retro glamour.

The gardenia makes it different from most perfumes out there, while there is also a note of rhubarb which adds modernity.

Cartier La Panthère Eau de Parfum

Best smelling perfume for women: trendy style

If you have a trendy style personality you are likely to be drawn to the new perfumes released each year, rather than sticking to classic favorites.

Just as you like to be noticed for what you’re wearing, you like your perfume to stand out.

Old favorite: Alien by Mugler

Released in 2005, Alien is still a favorite today because it’s one of those perfumes not everyone wears.

It’s very long lasting and definitely not one for anyone who likes to be subtle, making it ideal for festive and New Year parties.

The cardamon and cumin spices as well as orange, amber and heliotrope make it perfect for the holidays.

Alien by Mugler Eau de Parfum spray

Something new: Chanel Gabrielle

While I said you wouldn’t want to stick to an old classic, your eye for trends makes you keen to try out the new fragrances from iconic fashion houses.

Gabrielle is the latest scent from Chanel and is named for Coco Chanel’s real name.

One for all seasons, it is heavy on the white flowers, but the greener scent of ylang-ylang keeps it fresh and, when it dries, it develops more of a musky fragrance, making it winter-ready.

CHANEL Gabrielle Eau de Parfum spray

Good perfumes for women: preppy

The preppy style personality isn’t likely to like overtly musky or sensual fragrances. Instead, you prefer a classic, clean, and possibly woody, scent which appeals to your modern retro styling.

Old favorite: My Burberry

If one designer brand springs to mind when you think of preppy styling, it’s probably Burberry with its classic trench coats.

The My Burberry fragrance has all of that preppy styling by combining the wood-effect top with a more feminine bow.

As for the perfume itself, I think if you could bottle the smell of London, this would be it. The main scents are rose mixed with geranium. I think it smells best in winter and spring when the air is crisp and cold.

Burberry My Burberry Eau de Parfum

Something new: Replica Whispers in the Library

If any new scent is made just for the preppy style personality, surely this is the one. What could be more preppy than a fragrance inspired by the library?

The main scents you are likely to pick up are pepper, cedar and vanilla. Like being in a library in winter with the fire crackling!

Maison Margiela Replica Whispers in the Library Eau de Toilette

Winter perfumes for the architectural style personality

The architectural style personality is likely to choose a bottle based on design as well as fragrance.

You will be drawn to bottles which are classic design icons, as well as those which are more modernist.

As for the scents which appeal to you, these are likely to be complex and have many layers rather than one or two simple top notes which are easily discernible.

Old favorite: Tiffany & Co

The Tiffany brand with its distinctive turquoise packaging is an icon of style in itself. This perfume is multi-faceted and feminine with sparkling top notes giving way to something woodier.

Tiffany & Co. Tiffany & Love Eau de Parfum for Her

Something new: Mugler Les Exceptions

How beautiful is this bottle? Like Shalimar, it has been inspired by the art deco period, and it reminds me of a more modern version of that classic.

It is smoky with notes of leather, and also features the spiciness of star anise, making it the perfect winter perfume.

Mugler ‘Les Exeptions – Cuir Impertinent’ Eau de Parfum spray

Winter perfumes as gifts

As well as treating yourself to a new fragrance ready for the festive party season, perfume can also make a great gift.

By thinking about the sort of style a loved one is drawn to in their outfit choices, this will help you to narrow down the kind of perfume they are likely to love.

The air conditioners have been stored away. My turtleneck has come out of hiding. The coats in my closet have refused to gather more dust. All of that combined with the fact that it’s getting chillier by the day means I can finally start wearing my winter perfumes. I say “finally” because I honestly want to wear them year-round, but those seasonal beauty rules are ingrained beyond return; I just can’t. #LeStruggle.

However, with the official start of winter looming, I’m already putting together my go-to’s for the coming months. Some are new, like the inexplicably intoxicating Leather scent from Malin + Goetz. Others are oldie, but goodie classics, like Viktor + Rolf’s Flowerbomb and YSL’s completely underrated original Opium. Either way, everything in this carefully-curated list will feel almost as cozy as a warm wool blanket and smell, really….really good.

Viktor & Rolf.

Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb

You’re already familiar with this classic, also known as the gateway fragrance for twenty-somethings everywhere. Its warm patchouli, orange blossom, and jasmine notes are a signature smell you don’t have to see the bottle to know, though I’m kind of obsessed with the packaging.

This holiday season, you can customize a bottle on Viktor & Rolf’s ECommerce Boutique with accessories and monogramming. The brand also launched a holiday set ($170 or $120) and holiday edition bottle ($170) at department stores. Lastly, a baller Limited Edition Swarovski Crystal bottle (above) that will soon be restocked at Neiman Marcus ($1800). And if none of those pique your interest, you can also just grab the classic bottle at Sephora.

$85-$165 at Sephora

Calvin Klein.

Calvin Klein Obsession Eau de Parfum

If you’re not ready to go full-on spicy with your signature winter scent, this totally underrated perfume is an intoxicating build-up of floral and spice notes: mandarin, bergamot, jasmine, and oakmoss, to name a few.

$50-$73 at Ulta

Cartier.

Cartier Limited Edition La Panthère Eau de Parfum

The luxury brand gifted us with a limited edition version of its most popular fragrance, a “feline” scent that smells mostly like gardenia, but is undercut with musk notes that make it feel a bit bolder.

$67-$129 at Nordstrom

Dior.

Dior Sauvage Eau de Parfum

Cool nights and desert nights are inspo for this fresh with a hint of spicy scent. Papua New Guinean vanilla and amber give it a heavier vibe, while bergamot keeps it from going too heavy.

$95-$170 at Sephora

Dolce & Gabbana.

K by Dolce & Gabbana

Call it a cologne. Call it perfume. Either way, it’s that one Mediterranean scent you’ll feel good worry long after summer ends. Watch out for the pimento notes that’ll definitely wake up the senses.

$72-$94 at Sephora

Elizabeth & James.

Elizabeth & James Bourbon Eau de Parfum

This one is another oldie, but goodie that I fell in love with years ago. Once you get a whiff of the heavier vanilla bourbon and oakwood notes, you’ll want to pour a glass of red (or a cocktail).

$68-$85 at Ulta

Ellis Brooklyn.

Ellis Brooklyn Myth Eau de Parfum

Okay, so I’m totally late to the Myth hype, but better late than never. This is one of the brand’s most popular scents, due in part to unique smell that is somehow airy fresh and warm at the same time.

$100 at Sephora

Free People.

Free People 1809 Collection Lodge Fragrance

The retail brand’s newest 100 percent all-natural scent is a spicy gourmand blend that includes everyone’s favorite meditation tool, Palo Santo.

$28 at Free People

Guerlain.

Guerlain Mon Guerlain

As of late, I’m loving anything with lavender in it. That includes this warm and sweet scent inspired by none other than Angelina Jolie.

$69-$130 at Sephora

Bath & Body Works.

Bath & Body Works Sweater Weather Fragrance Mist

I am downright obsessed with the candle, so of course I need the body mist, too.

$14.50 at Bath & Body Works

Kat Von D Beauty.

Kat Von D Beauty Sinner Eau de Parfum

The candle version of this cinnamon-tinged scent is arguably more popular, but I’m all about smelling spicy this winter too.

$13.20-$51 at Sephora

Killian.

Killian After Sunset Eau de Parfum

The top notes of this new fragrance are citrusy, but once it starts to settle on the skin, you’ll smell those deeper musk and rose notes taking over.

$30-$135 at Sephora

Malin + Goetz.

Malin + Goetz Leather Eau de Parfum

This unique scent is one of my current favorites; a heavier, woodsy scent with subtle floral notes that give it a fresh, lightweight feel.

$95 at Nordstrom

Michael Kors.

Michael Kors Wonderlust Sublime Eau de Parfum

This darker take on the original summer-fresh Wonderlust scent is a floral amber blend that’ll match the early sunset vibes of winter.

$70-$118 at Ulta

Phlur.

Phlur Anoranza

If you prefer a spicy scent on the lighter side, this floral-rum perfume captures the mysterious, romantic energy of Havana.

$96 at Phlur

Tom Ford Beauty.

Tom Ford Noir Extreme

Cardamom, sandalwood, and orange flower are the star notes of this ultra-rich cologne that you don’t have to be a man to wear.

$128-$180 at Sephora

YSL.

YSL Opium

Everyone loves to rave about YSL Black Opium, but I’m partial to the original scent, which is a oriental perfume, complimented with floral and fruit notes.

$62-$77 at Sephora

Want to hear my biggest beauty pet peeve? Smelling my own perfume on a stranger in the street. Nothing is more intimate than your smell, because it attaches itself to memories in a way no other sense can. Honestly, one sniff of your ex’s signature scent at a bar can have you tipsy-texting them faster than you can say “toxic.” In fact, I’d rather wear no perfume at all than spritz someone else’s signature—it’s too personal, like borrowing a thong.

That’s why I, like the rest of my beauty editor friends, are constantly searching for scents that speak to our personalities, remain elusive enough that the chance of catching a stranger channeling our vibe on the subway platform is low low low, and make sense for the season. Here, our current roster.

Tom Ford Lavender Extreme

“I never thought my buddy Tom could top Tabacco Vanille, but I’ve never been happier to be mistaken. Lavender is my favorite smell on Earth, and this formula blends three types of the herb with bergamot and tonka bean for a heady, androgynous scent that clings to my neck well into the wee hours. It edges up any outfit I’m wearing—the olfactory equivalent of a leather jacket, if you will. And its seductive powers have been confirmed by perhaps the most attune focus group: The amount of Uber drivers who have turned down the music to ask me why I smell so good is staggering.”

Lavender Extreme Eau de Parfum TOM FORD sephora.com $335.00

And…

By Kilian Rolling in Love

“I get two picks because it’s my story and them’s the breaks! I’ve learned that like my fragrance just how I like my coffee: with healthy helping of almond milk because oat wasn’t available. The nutty substitute adds an extra lick of creaminess to Kilian Hennessy’s newest formula, which boasts seven different types of musk for that ‘your skin, but sultrier’ effect. Consider it ‘fireside sex under a caribou blanket,’ atomized.”

Maison Margiela Replica Whispers in the Library

“Let me tell you something: Asking a woman out on a date to the library is essentially a sext all smart women will appreciate. A day surrounded by books inspired this fragrance, and I can confirm this makes me feel like a hot librarian. The woody, warm notes of pepper, tonka bean, cedarwood, and vanilla will make colder months a bit more cozy. Spritzing on its subtle spice feels like a perfect pre-date ritual for a boost of confidence. Even though this scent is unisex, I refuse to share it with bae.”

D.S. & Durga Notorious Oud

“When temperatures dip into single digits, I switch out my preferred woody floral fragrances for a warm, musky oud. The latest on my roster is Notorious Oud from D.S & Durga. It’s vaguely spicy thanks to the saffron and camphor notes, yet perfectly balanced by the lavender and bulgar rose. Ouds can be a little overwhelming for some people, but if you’re curious about them this guy is a great place to start—it’s gentle enough for the uninitiated, but with enough bite for the veterans. Any scent that grows more delicious throughout the day (to the point that strangers will ask me what I’m wearing in the elevator) gets a hard yes from me.”

Faith Xue, Editorial Director at Byrdie

Acqua di Parma Vaniglia

“When the weather gets bone-chillingly cold outside, I want my fragrance to make me feel as warm and cozy as my UNIQLO Heattech. I have a few perfumes I have on rotation during the winter months (like Margiela’s By the Fireplace, Byredo Velvet Haze, Atelier Cologne Santal Carmin), but my new favorite is from Acqua di Parma and smells like a sweet, heady rush of Madagascar vanilla. Named Vaniglia, it’s part of the brand’s new Signatures of the Sun collection—10 potent fragrances, each centered around a single note—and makes other vanilla perfumes pale in comparison (or just seem too complicated, or saccharine sweet). The scent blends its star, vanilla, with notes of bergamot, mandarin, neroli, and jasmine sambac, rounding it out with base notes of cedarwood and musk. If you were to ask me to describe it in word, I’d say ‘sunny.’ Hence, why I’m spritzing it with abandon these days, hoping its powers will extend to the grey skies outside. Plus, there’s the added bonus that every time I wear it, someone tells me how good I smell.”

Gamine Signature

“Gamine is French-inspired and New York City-based (like me, always!) and tends to fly under the radar. Since it launched a couple of years ago, its namesake scent—a nod to founder Melanie Dir’s surf trips to France’s Reunion Island—has been my signature. It’s an earthy, yet spicy unisex blend of Cote D’Azur cypress, vetiver root, chocolate noir, and wild Indonesian patchouli that lives its best life in the cooler months. Melanie encourages misting it in less obvious areas of the body that emit heat, like under the breasts, furthering the sexy French feel.”

NARS Audacious

A post shared by margaux anbouba (@margaux_polaux) on Oct 5, 2019 at 7:28am PDT

“I was first drawn to Audacious by NARS because of the unusual packaging. It looks like some sort of objet d’art that you’d see at your coolest friend’s house and wonder, What’s that? The scent totally matches that vibe. It’s warm, mysterious, and just a little bit witchy—like you’re crushing tropical frangipani flowers for a love potion in a room swirling with incense. I love spraying it in my hair so I leave a faint trail of it when I walk through a room.”

Best Perfumes For Summer

1. Jo Malone Jo Loves Mandrine

It comes as no surprise that Jo Malone finds its place in this list. They have some of the best perfumes available in the market. This cologne has a citrus fragrance that will instantly remind you of the warmth of somewhere lovely.

2. Derek Lam 10 Crosby Silent St. Eau De Parfum

Derek Lam had a very specific image in mind. He pictured a girl walking down the street, looking ever so confident and in her element. He wanted to capture that feeling in a perfume, which is exactly what this perfume is. It has a floral and fresh scent that has a hint of pure musk. Perfect for a day out in the sun!

3. Atelier Cologne Clementine California Cologne Absolue Pure Perfume

This screams summer in the warm beaches of California. When you spray it, the first thing that will hit you is the citrusy burst along with hints of juniper and just the slight tanginess of mandarin. It is also blended with other explosive scents like star anise, sandalwood, and pepper. It’s the tropical vibe of this cologne that men and women will love since it’s gender neutral.

4. Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium Floral Shock Eau De Parfum

This one is for all the coffee lovers. Nothing better to jolt you awake than a strong cup of coffee right? Now imagine that coffee in the form of perfume. A shot of espresso is what everyone needs! The iconic scent of coffee beautifully blended with vanilla and hints of orange blossom and gardenias is what makes it so summery.

5. Tom Ford Soleil Blanc Eau De Parfum

Think sultry summer nights. That’s exactly what you get in this bottle. The perfect blend of floral with the seductiveness of amber, this falls nothing short of creating that signature magnetic scent by Tom Ford that everyone ‘oh-so’ love so much!

6. Christian Dior Poison Girl Eau de Parfum

This list would not be complete till it has something by Dior, and here it is! When you get a whiff of this amazing scent, you’ll be entranced, as it personifies a confident bold and sexy woman who knows what she wants. In this perfume, you’d find traces of Venezuelan Tonka Bean with bursts of citrus orange combined with the elegance of Grasse Rose.

7. CK One Summer

When I think of summers, I think of hammock on the beach, a good book and sipping on a nice cold mojito. You may not be able to sip on a mojito always, but you can definitely embrace its scent in this lovely perfume. This fragrance is enough to transport you to a fabulous resort and if that’s not enough, wait till you get a whiff of lime mojito, ripe guavas and the coolness of cedarwood as soon you open the bottle.

8. Caudalie, Rose de Vigne

Picture a garden of roses in the early morning. They’re surrounded by other shrubbery and if you look further ahead, you can see the forest. Now, imagine all of this in a bottle, because that’s exactly what this perfume is.

9. Liz Earle, Botanical Essence

With hints of pink pepper, bergamot, the spice of cinnamon and cypriol combined with the enchanting fragrances of damask rose and sandalwood, this perfume has the perfect elements of elegance coupled with a fresh appeal. It’s a must try if you like spices and the earthy feel that it comes with.

10. Marc Jacobs, Daisy

If you’re into fruity, floral and sweet scents, then this one is for you. It’s a twist on the original Daisy by Marc Jacobs. The first thing you’d notice when you spray this is the burst of pomelo. You would also get a whiff of bright peonies and rustic cedar wood. All of this in a pretty pink bottle with the signature daisies on the cap.

11. Jo Malone Nashi Blossom

As the name suggests, this lovely fragrance by Jo Malone contains the beautiful scent of the Nashi blossoms in its heart. However, it’s probably not the first thing you’d smell when you open this bottle. At first, the citrus jumps right at you, followed by the Nashi blossoms and finally the subtle hints of white musk. All in all, a perfect cologne for the summers.

12. Marc Jacobs Rain

This scent from Marc Jacobs will remind you of the showers in the warm summer months. It’s a new take on the original Marc Jacobs collection in order to capture the essence of summer. If you like cool fresh aqua fragrances, then you should definitely give this one a spritz.

13. Gucci Flora Garden Collection

In order to encapture the essence of the flowers at their full bloom, Gucci has created a beautiful floral scent with the fragrance of magnolias at its heart. You will also smell notes of zesty citrus, captivating sandalwood with freesia and an accord of warm chocolate towards the end.

14. Victoria’s Secret Love Is Heavenly

As always, Victoria’s Secret always has something sexy in store, and this perfume is no exception. If the packaging doesn’t encourage you to buy the product, then I assure you that the scent will. You’ll be delighted to find a beautiful blend of florals with hints of sweet musk.

15. Dior La Colle Noire

The La Colle Noire rests its base in the signature flower, Rose de Mai as it pays homage to the origin of this flower in the land of Grasse. Christian Dior purchased the Chateau de la Colle Noire in 1951 and had always loved the serenity and peace that he felt from the garden where the Rose de Mai flowers grew. It’s no wonder that this signature scent made it to this perfume.

10 best women’s summer perfumes: Find your new favourite scent for the warmer season

Like spring cleaning your wardrobe or substituting a heavy foundation for a tinted moisturiser, it’s the time of year to be swapping out your heady winter fragrance for a fresher, cleaner, more airy option.

The trend this year in scent appears to be all things citrus. From lemon and lime to grapefruit and mandarin, if the note is zesty, it’s likely to make an appearance in some of the latest summer smells.

When it came to testing fragrances, we were looking for unusual scents, but these didn’t necessarily need to cost the earth – there are some good inexpensive scents featured here that have been created with an original blend of ingredients.

We were looking for a fragrance that wouldn’t need to be re-applied by mid-afternoon, and of course design comes into it as we love a striking, dressing table worthy bottle.

Atkinsons Mint & Tonic, 100ml: £130, Selfridges

Originally the official perfumer to the Royal Court of England, Atkinsons have been producing fragrances for their aristocratic clientele since 1799. But this is no old-fashioned fragrance house. With their finger firmly on the pulse, Atkinsons use their perfume know-how to produce extraordinarily modern scents, and Mint & Tonic is everything you want from a summer fragrance. Think cocktails on a sun-drenched terrace with floral, herbal and citrus notes blended with the green aromatic notes of crushed mint. Sparkling mandarin, grapefruit and lime lift the warming ginger and settle into solid earthy tones of musk vetiver and white cedarwood. This is a scent as easily worn by men as women.

Penhaligon’s Cairo eau de parfum, 100ml: £173, Penhaligon’s

You can almost feel the heat from this majestic Egyptian city in Penhaligon’s latest fragrance, packed with spicy and woody notes. Iconic ingredients from the ancient spice trade route – earthy saffron, Sri Lankan sandalwood, resinous labdanum, and woody cypriol – have been blended with damascena rose, sweet vanilla pod and warming patchouli for a richly enthralling, quite unusual scent. Interestingly, it’s not anywhere near as heavy as you’d expect it to be from this list of ingredients. If you like a rich, full-bodied scent, but want to swap to something slightly lighter for the warmer months, this one’s for you. At this level of perfumery, the unusual ingredients do come at a price, but it’s incredibly long-lasting and you only need one spritz, so probably quite cost-effective in the long run. It’s another one that could easily be worn by men too.

Le Couvent des Minimes – Santa Cruz, 50ml: £65, Look Fantastic

It’s not often we come across such a long-lasting scent – this one remained intense for most of the day – and it’s the one people remarked on most often during our testing. Santa Cruz is an alluring fragrance, but interestingly it’s citrus based rather than floral. Opening with lemon, bergamot and grapefruit, the initial hit is a zesty one that blends into fresh greens thanks to coriander, sage and cooling eucalyptus. The warming cedar and vetiver dry down leaves an earthy, woody scent on the skin with definite masculine undertones. A spicy aromatic scent for those who enjoy striking fragrances.

Maison Margiela replica under the lemon tree, 100ml: £96, Selfridges

Think Sicilian lemon tree groves bursting with fruit under the shimmering Mediterranean sun – it sounds like a cliched fragrance advert, but this scent really does transport you to another place with just one spritz. The initial citrus notes move into a fresh green mix of coriander, herby mate absolute and tea leaves, while cedar and white musks provide an earthy woody base. Under the lemon tree is a sparkling summer scent and perfect for anyone who likes their fragrance with a citrus twist.

Jo Malone jasmine sambac and marigold, 50ml: £75, Jo Malone

Imagine hot, lazy, sun-drenched days next to the Indian Ocean and vibrant Indian flower markets packed with exotic blooms. The fresh vibrant jasmine sambac blends with the surprisingly fruity undertones of marigold – an unusual fragrance note not often found in perfumes. These two florals blend into a base of sweet and seductive benzoin, an oil often used in incense, that gives this scent its body. A real crowd-pleaser, this was one of the scents that got the most comments during testing.

Estee Lauder bronze goddess eau fraiche skinscent, 50ml: £44, Look Fantastic

If you like your perfume sweet and floral, it doesn’t get much better than this sensual scent. The intense, exotic tiare flower is used alongside heady jasmine, magnolia and orange flower for a real bombshell of a perfume. A citrus blend of zesty mandarin, Sicilian bergamot and lemon lifts the scent, while creamy coconut milk, sweet vanilla and warming amber, vetiver, myrrh and sandalwood give it depth and warmth. Think sensuous bronzed glowing skin, with the elegance of the Riviera.

Stories by Eliza Grace No 1, 30ml: £80, Eliza Grace

If simple citrus fragrances are your weakness then this sparkling scent should hit the spot with its opening notes of bergamot, grapefruit and orange blossom. The sweet floral scent from jasmine and heliotrope bring some warmth to the initially strong zesty hit, which eventually settles into a warming sensual base of earthy sandalwood, vetiver, amber and cedarwood. Created in Grasse, a town on the French Riviera renowned for its perfumery, Stories blends only the finest raw materials sourced from all over the world (hence the price tag), which sets it apart from some high street scents. An elegant, unusual and unmistakably feminine scent.

Dolce & Gabbana light blue sun eau de toilette, 50ml: £57, John Lewis & Partners

Sensual and sunny, light blue sun uses tangy Italian lemons and juicy green apples for a sparkling initial hit, which very quickly smooths into a romantic floral heart of exotic sun-soaked jasmine, white rose and frangipani florals. The base of aromatic cedarwood, white musk and sensual sweet vanilla give this fruity floral a strong, warm and lasting base. It’s a sexy, alluring scent, but young and flirty rather than heady and overpowering.

Marc Jacobs daisy sunshine, 50ml: £34.99, The Perfume Shop

Daisy is one of the perfume world’s cheeriest fragrance families, and Marc Jacobs have upped the ante with this limited-edition summer launch for 2019. Mor Emporium Classics lychee flower, 14.5ml: £15, Indulge Beauty

The citrus burst of lime, lychee and orange is complemented by floral rose and jasmine notes in scent, while ripe berries give it a fruity undertone. It settles into a woody base, but retains a fresh punchy brightness. These purse sized perfumettes are handy for travelling too, especially if you’re just taking carry-on luggage.

The verdict: Women’s fragrances for summer

Our favourite scent this season for its summery cocktail-inspired blend of citrus notes and mint is Atkinson’s Mint & Tonic – a modern twist for a brand that’s been creating perfumes for over 200 years. For spicy, aromatic perfection try Santa Cruz, or for lazy sun-drenched Indian Ocean vibes you’ll love Jo Malone’s jasmine sambac and marigold.
