Whoopi goldberg and daughter

Well before Whoopi Goldberg was a star co-host on The View, she was a young mother doing the best she could for her one and only daughter, Alexandrea Martin (or “Alex”).

Whoopi had Alex at 18 years old with her former drug counselor, Alvin Martin, in 1973. The 63-year-old talk show star had been struggling with a heroin addiction throughout her teen years, which ultimately led to her reaching out to Alvin (the pair ended up splitting in 1979). At the time Alex was born, Whoopi had already dropped out of high school.

In the mid-70s, Whoopi and her daughter, who is now 45, moved to California to pursue her acting and stand-up comedy dreams. Since she was low on money, Whoopi told The Telegraph that she took whatever job she possibly could to pay her bills — including becoming a brick layer and a mortuary cosmetologist.

Alex revealed to TheGrio.com that she remembers the time being extremely tough for her and her mom.

“I know what it’s like with the food stamps, because my mom has her cards framed,” Alex said. “Seriously … I remember that. I remember we had the one room space and we slept in the bed together. I remember when we wanted to travel we would drive across the country in broke down bugs. We didn’t have the money to go to movies.”

Eventually, Whoopi’s hard work paid off. After developing a one-woman show, Whoopi got noticed by Steven Spielberg, who gave the young actress her first big break in The Color Purple in 1985. After that, Whoopi’s career did nothing but soar.

Looking back on those tough years, Whoopi told Page Six that Alex, who now has three children of her own, is a “better mother than she ever was.” But Alex has made it clear so many times that she sees her mom as nothing but her hero.

“We talk multiple times a day,” Alex told Wendy Williams in 2015 while promoting her and Whoopi’s reality docu-series According to Alex. She also revealed that because they’re so close, there are no boundaries as to what they talk about.

Whoopi echoed Alex’s feelings when she gushed on The View in 2016 that her daughter was her “best friend.” According to Whoopi, she’s “one of the most trustworthy and loyal people” that she’s ever known.

Alex Martin: What Whoopi Goldberg’s daughter is doing now

At age 18 in 1973, Whoopi Goldberg gave birth to Alexandra Martin, according to Good Housekeeping, with her former drug counselor and husband, Alvin Martin. The couple reportedly split a few years later in 1979. Just like her mom, Martin gave birth at a young age, welcoming her first child at 16. Now, she’s a mother of three to Amarah, Mason, and Jerzey. According to Page Six, Goldberg told guests at Martin’s 40th birthday party in 2014, “Alex is a better mother to her three kids than I ever was.”

Their family has continued to grow and Goldberg talked about becoming a great-grandmother on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon back in 2014. “I had just gotten into the groove of being a grandmother… Then this girl came and said she and her man were having a baby and I wanted to wring her neck,” she recalled of her granddaughter. Although Martin was flustered by becoming a grandma herself, Goldberg joked to Fallon, “I whispered in her ear, ‘I got no sympathy for you. You made me a grandmother when I was 33, b****.'”

During a mother-daughter appearance on The Wendy Williams Show in 2015, Martin revealed she and her mom “talk multiple times a day.” She talks to Goldberg about almost everything, but the comedian jumped in to clarify, “Some thing I don’t want to know. She’s married, too bad… If he’s mad, she’s mad, that’s not for me.” Despite that teasing, it’s easy to see just how close the two are from their on-screen dynamic.

For the record, Martin has been married three times…to the same man, Bernard Dean. On Wendy Williams, Martin explained that she and Dean eloped when she was 20, threw another wedding later, and then got remarried for a third time after getting divorced.

Whoopi Goldberg is a co-host on The View and has a legendary career in comedy and in Hollywood. But there was a time when Goldberg was a poor teenage drug addict with no hope. She worked her way out of poverty, making sacrifices along the way.

Who is Whoopi Goldberg?

Comedienne Whoopi Goldberg was born Caryn Elaine Johnson in 1955. Her father was a Baptist clergyman and her mom was a nurse and teacher. She chose the stage name “Whoopi” because she became known for passing gas on stage while performing, like a whoopie cushion.

Over the course of her career, Goldberg achieved a rarity in Hollywood by winning an E.G.O.T. – that’s an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony award. It’s clear that Whoopi Goldberg has a talent for all of it.

But life wasn’t always so rosy. Goldberg struggled with heroin addiction during her teen years and eventually hooked up with her drug counselor, Alvin Martin. Then she got pregnant with her daughter Alex at the young age of 18. She dropped out of high school before Alex was born.

She told The Telegraph that she was willing to take any job during that time just to make ends meet. That’s how she would up getting lots of experience with different jobs including a brick layer and mortuary cosmetologist.

Alex has memories of this time as she explained in an interview with TheGrio.com: “I know what it’s like with the food stamps, because my mom has her cards framed,” she said. “Seriously … I remember that. I remember we had the one room space and we slept in the bed together. I remember when we wanted to travel we would drive across the country in broke down bugs. Alex grew up watching her mom achieve fame and fortune thanks to perseverance. But when it comes to being a mom, Whoopi has said that Alex, who has three kids now, is a “better mother than she ever was.”

Obviously Whoopi Goldberg made an impression on her daughter. Alex told Wendy Williams that she and her mom talk multiple times per day about anything and everything. There are no secrets between this tight-knit family.

Whoopi agrees that they two are super close. While talking about Alex on The View, Whoopi called Alex her “best friend” and said she’s one of the best people she’s ever known.

So sweet!

44 Blue Productions, the award-winning producer, announced today that it has signed an exclusive deal with Whoopi Goldberg’s production company, One Ho Productions, to develop a docu-series (aka a reality TV show) around her daughter, Alex Martin, and her extended family. With her three children finally in their teens and 20s, Martin is excited to reinvent herself personally and professionally with the help of her husband, Bernard, and their best friends, Leisa and Ron. But when her oldest daughter, Amara, decides to move back home… with her fiancé and new baby, suddenly three generations will be living under one roof – and Alex’s plans may have to be put on hold.

“To say that Alex has a gift for frankness and humor is an understatement – and she clearly comes by it honestly,” said Stephanie Drachkovitch, Co-Founder & Executive Vice President of 44 Blue Productions. “Plenty of women face similar family dynamics, but they find support from their families and friends – in this case it’s Alex’s BFF since high school, Leisa. They keep each other honest and real!”

“I wanted to tell the story of two best friends who experience all of the major phases of a woman’s life together,” said Whoopi Goldberg. “Alex and Leisa have been friends since they were 17 and are both children of famous people, and are now approaching 40. My daughter just became a grandmother and her daughter just turned 24 and they are just trying to figure their lives out. This is really the story of an all-American family for a new generation; it looks a little different than the storybooks, but it’s filled with love and laughter. It’s very funny to watch them.”

“Watching Alex navigate the unexpected turns of her life and that of her family is anything but ordinary,” said Tom Leonardis, President and Executive Producer of One Ho Productions. “She and Leisa have basically raised their families together, putting their own humorous spin on the adage that ‘it takes a village.’ This family is funny, authentic and relatable – they just happen to have a famous family member who they look to for advice and the occasional reality check. Their story of multiple generations living together is one that will certainly resonate with viewers, and we’re eager to explore this phase along with them.”

Executive Producers are Stephanie and Rasha Drachkovitch for 44 Blue and Whoopi Goldberg, Tom Leonardis and Alex Dean for One Ho Productions.
