Beard oil, hot sauce, sex toys: The advent calendar gets weird

Forget a partridge in a pear tree or gold, myrrh and frankincense. Now you can count the days to Christmas with beard oil, beef jerky and “Game of Thrones” socks.

It’s the start of advent, and in recent years, retailers have been outdoing themselves to create advent calendars catering to every possible taste or interest. And how popular are these offbeat advent calendars? So very popular that they quickly sell out.

We’ve created our own advent calendar of advent calendars, including the most unusual, surprising or outrageous ones we’ve seen. Let’s start counting down.

1. From black pepper alligator to root beer habañero beef, you can say “Meaty Christmas” with a jerky advent calendar from Man Crates. Includes 25 bites of meat and artwork of caroling cows for $69.99. No reindeer, but there are elk, buffalo and wild boar. See mancrates.com/store/products/advent-calendar.

2. We found two advent calendars devoted to the television show “Friends.” One sold on Amazon features “Friends”-themed charm bracelet jewelry for $25.99. The One With the Friends Advent Calendar sold on Etsy for $8.09 has windows that capture moments from the show. That one is made by the same person who also offers “Mental” Geller, Nicolas Cage, Bill Murray and “Die Hard” advent calendars.

3. There’s no place like Sherlock Holmes for the holiday with the “Mr. Holmes’ Advent Calendar,” featuring 24 solve-it-yourself Christmas crimes. Published by mxpublishing.com, it’s about $20 on Amazon.

4. At only $6.99, this would be a perfect Christmas gift — for your servants: “The Downton Abbey Chocolate Advent Calendar.” It includes weekends and features German chocolates, available from worldmarket.com.

5. Santa’s secret sauce can be found somewhere in “The 25 Sauces of Christmas,” a hot sauce advent calendar, available for $79.95 from Amazon.

6. A different sort of spice is on offer with the toys, oils and potions in the “Better Love Adult Advent Calendar,” which includes 24 gifts for $169 from ellaparadis.com.

7. Antibiotic-free salmon and dried seaweed treats are behind the doors in the “Trader Joe’s Advent Calendar for Cats” for $5.99.

8. From superheroes to “Harry Potter” to “Star Wars,” there are plenty of theme sock advent calendar options to warm your toes over the holidays. We like the “Women’s Game of Thrones 15 Days of Socks Advent Calendar” from Target for $15. Because Christmas is coming.

9. The godless can also celebrate Christmas thanks to the “Atheist Advent Calendar”, made by an Australian company and priced at $12.76 on Etsy.

10. Little plastic spaceships, storm troopers and droids welcome the holiday season in the “Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar” for $32.99 at Target.

11. Cleansers, toners, creams, balms and serums made by a German skin-care guru are waiting in the compartments of the “Dr. Barbara Sturm Advent Calendar,” which will set you back $495 at Nordstrom and Sephora.

12. Come and trim your Christmas tree, Santa baby, with some decorations bought at Tiffany’s. Tiffany & Co. says it has the “Ultimate Advent Calendar,” and who can dispute it? Inside an aqua blue box modeled after the jeweler’s Fifth Avenue flagship store are 24 gifts ranging from diamond bracelets to a very nice watch to a sterling silver harmonica. Only $112,000.

13. Lovehoney.com sells Christmas stockings of a different kind in its “12 Nights of Seduction” lingerie calendar, available in regular and queen size, for $88.

14. You can get in the Christmas spirit by getting some Christmas spirits, with advent calendars for wine, beer, tequila, Japanese whiskey or gin. “The Bourbon Advent Calendar,” available from thespiritco.com, includes 24 drams of the stuff for $161.46.

15. Because he’s been a good boy, “Trader Joe’s Advent Calendar for Dogs” features salmon and sweet potato treats for $5.99.

16. Here’s an advent calendar that Santa Claus would appreciate: “24 Days of Beard Treats,” a beard oil advent calendar made by the Bearded Man Co. and found on Etsy for $43.12.

Best alcohol advent calendars for Christmas 2019: The boozy wine, rum, gin, whiskey, beer and vodka advent calendars to buy now

Christmas: a time to eat, drink and be merry. While there’s nothing wrong with chocolate or beauty advent calendars, for full-throttle merriness the only advent calendar worth buying are the ones brimming with booze.

Just as waking up to a brand new beauty product every December morning has become approved festive behaviour, the notion of trying a mini tipple daily by way of advent calendar is fast becoming accepted.

And why not? As long as you’re drinking responsibly, an alcohol filled advent calendar is a great way of trying beers, spirits and wine you’ve always wanted to give a go without having to splash out on an entire bottle.

They’re also a fantastic way to sample small breweries and artisan producers who might otherwise fly under your radar.

Most calendars feature a modest measure behind each window, so there’s slim chance of a hangover, especially if you add a mixer and open your daily window in the evening, rather than before work in the morning – unless you’re hoping for a P45 for Christmas.

But look, you don’t need convincing do you? You’re already looking for the best alcohol-filled calendars to get this Christmas, so without further ado…

Each day of December leading up to Christmas guarantees a piece of chocolate from the Advent calendar, but chocolate doesn’t always cut it. Fortunately, Aldi released an Advent calendar this season featuring 200-milliliter bottles of wine for each calendar day. Unfortunately, the Aldi Advent calendar is only available in the U.K. for now. However, America was paying attention, and has caught up with the idea. Drinks by the Dram has come out with a variety of boozy Advent calendars in anticipation for the holiday season. No matter your poison, everyone should be able to participate in the tradition. And these booze-filled Advent calendars are actually available in the U.S.

There are several different calendars featuring a variety of alcohol, including whiskey, Scotch, bourbon, gin, and even rum in three-centiliter drams. The whisky calendar offers a variety of whiskies from around the world such as single malt Scotch, Irish whiskey, and American whiskey. If variety isn’t your thing and you know what you like, you can opt for the scotch specific calendar. The scotch Advent calendar features single malts, blended malts, and blends offering a range from smoky to peaty. The same goes for bourbon fanatics, who can enjoy some of America’s rare small-batch bourbons as well as some from the larger distilleries.

If the short days and cold nights of winter are making you miss the beach, Drinks by the Dram also offers a rum calendar featuring white, dark, spiced, navy strength, and agricole varieties in French, Spanish, and British styles. There’s a lot of dark liquor being offered, but not to fear, there’s a gin Advent calendar for the clear liquor folks cleverly named the Ginvent calendar.

What better way to promote the spirit of giving than showing your loved ones you appreciate their alcohol tastes? It’s also a good way to explore different spirits, and if someone mentions something they like, you may have time to run out and get them a bottle to put under the tree.

Check out the full selection on Master of Malt.

UPDATE: December 3, 2019

You probably already got our hands on a boozy advent calendar (if you’re not, then what are you waiting for?!), and this news is the next best thing. The time has finally come, and Aldi’s sparkling wine New Year’s countdown calendar will be on sale tomorrow.

At participating stores, the countdown calendar will be sold for just $24.99 and includes seven assorted 187mL bottles of sparkling wine because, truly, what’s a better way to ring in the new decade than poppin’ cute, mini bottles? The featured wines are from France, Italy, and Spain and vary in ABV.

The countdown calendar starts on Christmas day, so you can finish off your advent calendar and get right into this one. So thank you, Aldi, for helping us all cheers to the New Year the right way.

Original Post: November 5, 2019

If there were ever a time to plan a mid-week grocery shopping trip, Wednesday, November 6 would be it. That magical date is the day Aldi brings back its annual advent calendars! And in years past, many don’t make it much past the launch date before selling out, so if you want to get your hands on one, it’s best to act fast.

Good news, though: This year, Aldi has upped the stock of some of its most popular calendars—wine, cheese, chocolate—to better meet customer demands. They’re also putting out a whole lot of kid- and pet-friendly calendars, too, in case you want to spread the Christmas joy to the rest of the fam.

To help make your shopping run a little easier, here is a comprehensive list of all the advent calendars, edible and otherwise, coming to Aldi stores this week:

  • Festive Collection Wine Advent Calendar; 24 mini bottles of red, white, rosé, and bubbly wine; $69.99
  • Beer Advent Calendar; 24 full-size bottles of beer; $49.99
  • Emporium Selection Advent Cheese Calendar; 24 mini, individually wrapped imported cheese (the hot and spicy jack is a favorite!); $14.99

The countdown to Christmas has officially begun, and Aldi is set to release some new Advent calendars that will keep food and drinks lovers filled with cheer for the next month.

After selling out in a flash last year, Aldi’s wine and cheese calendars are back. This year, the grocery chain is adding another adult-friendly treat: a beer-themed Advent calendar.

Now that’s our kind of Advent calendar!ALDI

The calendars hit Aldi stores on Nov. 6 and if you want to score one, you should probably get there early.

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

In 2018, the new additions to Aldi’s holiday lineup sold out quickly, and the store even put the following disclaimer on its website this week: “Whether you’re shopping for the wine lover, the cheese enthusiast, or the chocolate connoisseur, we’ve got unique advent calendars that’ll get anyone in the holiday spirit. So, however you count down, come in quick ‘cause they sell out fast.”

Advent calendars are typically filled with chocolates or little toys and geared towards kids. While Aldi has plenty of those available, these adult versions have gained a popular following in recent years.

Is “need to get in line at Aldi for the wine advent calendar” a valid excuse to call off of work tomorrow

The Festive Collection Wine Advent Calendar retails for $70 and comes with 24 mini bottles of red and white wines, while the Beer Advent Calendar goes for $50 and comes with 24 mini beers.

For the beer lover in your life.ALDI

If cheese is more your thing, the Emporium Selection Advent Cheese Calendar will only set you back $15 for a sampling of flavors including an aged cheddar and spicy jack. The Choceur Premium Advent Calendar is only $5. Aldi’s Advent calendar lineup even includes one for the family dog, too.

A cheese calendar is the perfect gift to bring to a holiday party.ALDI

If you’re considering venturing out to your local Aldi to score one of the chain’s adult-friendly calendars, keep in mind that they’re only available at locations that sell alcohol and customers will be limited to buying two beer/wine and three cheese calendars at a time.

An Aldi representative told TODAY Food that many stores have a plan in place if long lines do form for those popular calendars. Store employees will be distributing a limited number of tickets to customers standing in line. Shoppers will then be able to exchange that ticket for an Advent calendar at the checkout counter.

If you miss out on this round of calendars, there will also be a sparkling wine calendar (for counting down to the new year) out on Dec. 4.

Best alcoholic advent calendars for Christmas 2018

Christmas is just round the corner, but before the big day, comes the all-important advent calendars. While we may already be well into December, many of the popular boozy calendars are now reduced – and you’ll just have to enjoy two a day to make up for lost time.

Previously only associated with kids in the years gone by, over the last few years, a plethora of alcohol-filled advent calendars for adults have begun to hit the headlines, and we want them all (although our liver certainly doesn’t).

But being alcohol, we recommend that you only pick one, so we’ve rounded up all our favourites below, including gin, Prosecco, beer, wine, whisky and even absinthe, which are all still available to buy or pre-order.

1. Virgin Wines wine advent calendar, £69.99 + £10 deposit

Class yourself as a wine connoisseur?

Having sold out for two years running, this year, Virgin Wine’s offering has got even better this year, choc-a-block full of highly ranked wines from the award-winning online wine shop.

But being in such high demand does come at a price, with Virgin Wines now issuing a £10 deposit for those who want first dibs on the alcoholic treat. Worth it.

Get it from Virgin Wines for £79.99 (£10 deposit plus £69.99 advent calendar cost).

2. Prosecco advent calendar, £75

Fans of the fizz will love this Prosecco advent calendar with a twist

Even Prosecco’s most dedicated fans may struggle with the idea of drinking a bottle of bubbly every day in December, so sparkling wine queen’s Freixenet have launched their own, very special version of the boozy advent calendar.

As well as plenty of mini bottles of Freixenet favourites such as the Italian Sparkling Rosé, fizz fans will also get timeless Nails Inc nail varnish party shades, as well as premium Prosecco bath bombs, aromatic candles and many more surprises for a daily pampering treat.

Get it from the Freixenet shop from October for £75.

3. Gin and tonic advent calendar, £99

This looks pretty cool

While there’s plenty of gin calendars out there, we’ve not seen anything quite like this before. Instead of a gin every day, which can be hard for even the most experienced drinkers to stomach, this innovative offering gives you a 70cl bottle of the stuff, plus a fancy tonic everyday to go with.

The only downside? It’s very overpriced, considering you are literally getting a £30 bottle of gin, plus some tonic water, for £100.

Get it from first4hampers for £99

4. Drinks by the Dram whisky advent calendar, £149.95

This is a must-have for whisky fanatics

If you’re a fan of whisky, you’ll know that the only way to do it is right. And Drinks by the Dram certainly know their stuff. Indulge in some of the world’s most exciting whiskies with this luxurious set, where each bottle is wrapped up all artisan with a Harry Potter-style wax seal.

Get it from Drinks by the Dram for £149.95

5. Aldi wine advent calendar, £49.99

Aldi’s is a bargain

While most other boozy advent calendars will set you back at least £100, in true Aldi style, the discount supermarket are offering a much cheaper alternative.

Filled with mini bottles of red, white and rose wine, Aldi’s offering will no doubt sell out within minutes, so make sure you set an alarm for the big day. And no, we don’t mean Christmas, we mean the 4th November when the wine advent calendar hits stores.

Get it from Aldi for £49.99

6. Absinthe advent calendar from Drinks by the Dram, £139.95

Are you brave enough to embrace the green fairy this Christmas? We certainly aren’t

We’ve all heard the scary myths about the super high-ABV spirit, and while no, absinthe will not make you hallucinate, and it’s not banned in the US, it’s still the most daring advent calendar we’ve seen this 2018.

Get it from Master of Malt for £149.95

7. That Boutique-y Gin Company advent calendar, £99.95

Drink a gin that contains an entire gingerbread house. Yes, really

There’s plenty of gin advent calendars up for grabs this year, but if only the creme de la creme of alcohol will suit you this Christmas, pick up this expensive but extraordinary haul of some of the world’s finest artisan gins, including the most fantastically festive gin you could imagine that contains gold, Christmas tree needles, and even an entire gingerbread house.

Get it from That Boutique-y Gin Company for £99.95

8. Tipsy Tree with fizz advent calendar, £140

This looks almost homemade

If you don’t want a large and bulky advent calendar upsetting the feng shui of your house, this wooden offering may be the one for you instead.

Alongside the gorgeous wooden tree you’ll also get 24 bottles of sparkling wine, and once next year comes around, instead of buying a brand new calendar, you can just replenish the stock of this one from your local supermarket, saving you money.

Get it from first4hampers for £140

9. The Pip Stop Prosecco advent calendar, £124.99

It’s Christmas, after all (Image: The Pip Stop)

What is more festive than a daily dose of delicate fizz? This set includes 20cl bottles of white and rosé fizz including Prosecco, cava and champagne, to get you in the mood for the sparkly season. Because if you can’t live like royalty at Christmas, when can you?

Get it from the Pip Stop for £124.99

10. Wine advent calendar, £69.99

You can’t go wrong with a wine advent calendar

A little cheaper than some of the other offerings (although not as much as Aldi) this wine advent calendar does everything it says on the tin.

From red, to white, to rose, plus some good old mulled wine (it wouldn’t be Christmas without it, after all), this is great for anyone that loves a glass (or 24!) of wine.

Get it from first4hampers for £69.99
