Where to buy shu uemura?

Shu Uemura was well-known throughout Hollywood long before the creation of the now classic eyelash curler. Mr. Uemura (yes, he was an actual person) first gained notoriety working as a cinematic makeup artist in the 1960s, when he transformed Shirley MacLaine into a Japanese woman for the film My Geisha. In the late ’60s, he developed his first product: a cleansing oil (it’s still a cult favorite today) that was powerful enough to remove actresses’ pancake makeup but gentler on their skin than soap. In the following years, he launched a full makeup and skin-care line, which quickly won the devotion of Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, and Jane Birkin.

The line went on to become a favorite of top makeup artists like Kevyn Aucoin (when he appeared on Oprah Winfrey in the late ’90s and named the Shu lash curler as one of his most cherished products, sales of the tool skyrocketed) and celebrities (who can forget the custom-made fox-fur lashes that Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2001 Academy Awards). But, sadly, it was announced this week that within the next few months, Shu Uemera will close all of its makeup counters and boutiques in the U.S. (Before you totally freak: Products will still be available on the brand’s website, and the hair-care line will continue to be sold in salons.) Here, the lipsticks, glosses, and shadows we suggest you get out and test before they all but disappear:

Vinyl Unlimited lip gloss in Pink. “It’s a bold, opaque hot pink—perfect for wearing in the spring and summer.” Amy Keller Laird, beauty director

Pressed Eye Shadow. “There’s a fantastic range of colors—over 50 shades—but my favorite is #835 Matte Neutral Beige. It covers the redness on my lids and has just enough pink to look natural, not like bland beige.” Victoria Kirby

Rouge Unlimited lipstick.. “No matter what look I’m going for, this line has the perfect color, from a classic red to a natural-looking nude. The formula is creamy and comfortable, but it lasts well, too. Deep Scarlet—a rich, dramatic berry—is one of my favorite colors for when I’m going out at night.” Kayleigh Donahue, editorial assistant

Rouge Unlimited Creme Matte Lipstick in Sandy Beige . “I love a true beige lip color, and this one is matte so it looks polished. It works with smoky eyes at night, or with soft makeup during the day at work.” Jessica Prince, editorial assistant

On 28 April, L’Oréal announced it had withdrawn iconic makeup brand Shu Uemura from the UK market, including its e-commerce site (though not its haircare). I wasn’t wholly surprised: for me, Shu had quickly lost its way following the 2004 acquisition by L’Oréal, which had tried to turn what is essentially a cult professional artistry brand into a commercial player with mass appeal. But I feel sad for the loss of what is unarguably one of the most influential makeup lines in history, and have spent the days since the announcement fielding correspondence from bereft fans who want to know how they’ll replace favourite products.

It was Shu that introduced the concept of double cleansing to the west, and his cleansing oils were the first of their type. Nowadays, cleansing oils are common, and a fair replacement for the original is DHC’s Deep Cleansing Oil (from £12.50). Massage into skin dry, add a little warm water to emulsify and loosen makeup, then remove with a hot cloth for a comfy, completely clean finish.

Shu Uemura is even better known for his eyelash curlers: launched in 1991 after a painstaking engineering process, these won many awards and are a true icon in beauty. They don’t bend lashes sharply, but curl every hair into a flattering flutter. Instead, I’ll now be using the Surratt Relevée Lash Curler (£28), which is identical in mechanism, but has thicker, matte, no-slip handles for better grip. I also love those by Kevyn Aucoin (£17) and Shiseido (£20), with replacement rubber pads available from the latter (all of these superior curlers, like Shu’s, are made in Japan). If you preferred Shu’s dinky, half-lash curlers, Mac makes identical ones at £14.

When I began in the beauty industry almost 27 years ago, I saved for a Shu Uemura eye brush with money that should have been spent on food; it’s still in my kit and still going strong. Shu’s tools and accessories were exceptional. If you’ll miss the magnetic shadow palettes, DIY lip palettes, spatulas and metal mixing trays, try My Kit Co for a smaller but affordable selection of dupes. Shu Uemura’s Water Perfect Water-in-Cake Foundation, a gliding base with a moist but ungreasy finish, is lovely, but its fans may even prefer Vincent Longo’s Water Canvas (£43.50). Funnily enough, the Longo brand was pulled from the UK market some years ago, but now it’s back. Perhaps there’s hope for Shu fans yet.

8 Best-Selling Shu Uemura Malaysia Holy Grail Products

This Japanese brand was the result of makeup artist Shu Uemura’s passion for wholesome cosmetics and skincare. After he made a name for himself in Hollywood, he created the Shu Uemura brand so fellow professional and amateur makeup artists can get their hands on innovative products that are beneficial for the skin.

While Shu Uemura is known for many great products, there are several that remains at the top of their best-sellers list for many years. Below are eight of Shu Uemura’s most popular cosmetics and skincare products in Malaysia and beyond.

After being mentioned in the major feature film, The Devil Wears Prada starring Meryl Streep, the Shu Uemura eyelash curler became everyone’s favorite handy tool. The Shu Uemura eyelash curler is an award-winning tool with an enhanced ergonomic design and precise engineering for the optimum curl and improved safety.

First released 25 years ago, this Shu Uemura eyebrow pencil will only release its color pigment when it comes in contact in the oils around the brow hairs. This innovation will result in a natural and defined finish. The Shu Uemura Hard Formula Eyebrow Pencil is available in the colors of brown, seal brown, stone gray, tea beige, warm taupe, and oak brown.

Shu Uemura Anti-Oxi + Skin Refining Cleansing Oil

Suitable for any skin type, this Shu Uemura cleansing oil removes micro impurities and makeup with its moringa and green tea extract. The Shu Uemura Anti-Oxi + Skin Refining Cleansing Oil awakens your senses due to the top note of mandarin, elemi, and ginger. Also made with lavender, geranium, cardamom, and guaiac wood, apply this every morning and night to improve your complexion.

Shu Uemura Ultime8 Sublime Beauty Cleansing Oil

This Shu Uemura cleansing oil focuses more on complicated skin concerns and problems. Using eight different botanical origin oils, the Shu Uemura Ultime8 Sublime Beauty Cleansing Oil utilizes Chinese practices to raise the efficiency of makeup removing and eliminating impurities. Skin will appear smoother, moisturized, and softer after use.

Shu Uemura Porefinist Anti-Shine Fresh Cleansing Oil

Those with oily skin and prone to acne should consider this Shu Uemura cleansing oil. The Porefinist Anti-Shine Fresh Cleansing Oil is lightweight and is made with cinnamon bark extract to balances sebum. It also removes blackheads, cleans and eliminates the appearance of pores.

Shu Uemura Ultimate Natural Mascara

Nobody likes thick, clumpy lashes. This Shu Uemura Ultimate Natural Mascara has a buildable and controllable formula so it’ll spread evenly and smoothly on the lashes. The wand also aids in the even application as each bristle will gently coat the lashes. This Shu Uemura mascara is waterproof, smudgeproof, and available in black and intense black.

Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited Supreme Matte

Some matte lipsticks, especially those in the liquid form, will leave your lips cracked and dry by the end of the day. The Shu Uemura Rouge Unlimited Supreme Matte lipsticks won’t do any of that. This Shu Uemura lipstick has a unique creamy texture with an extreme matte finish that will moisturize your lips throughout the day. You can choose between 15 gorgeous shades to finish your daily makeup look.

Other Shu Uemura Must-Haves

If the above eight best-selling Shu Uemura products still aren’t enough, add the following products to your beauty collection. The Shu Uemura Eye Shadow Refills are a great way to mix and match eye shadow colors to your liking without buying a whole palette. Choose from 38 stunning shades with various finishes like matte, metallic, iridescent, and pearl to make your own Shu Uemura eye shadow palette.

The next must-have item you should add on is the Tsuya Youthful Purifying Lotion. It’s available in three different textures for different skin types: fresh, watery consistency for oily skin, watery type for normal to dry skin, and rich jelly texture for dry to very dry skin. This lotion will restore the skin’s plumpness, tone, and glow, achieving Japan’s ideal for the perfect skin or tsuya. The Tsuya Youthful Purifying Lotion also comes with the Silk Supreme Crystalizer, a dual-sided lotion pad to better distribute the lotion and moisturize the skin. Using silk and cotton to polish, purify, and smoothen the skin, your skin will achieve the tsuya state easily.

Bad news: One of the best beauty retail outlets to ever happen to Orange County has closed up shop.

And not only have we in OC lost our location, but every store—and counter—in the United States has also shut down.

L’Oreal has pulled the plug on all Shu Uemura U.S. operations, choosing to focus instead on its larger luxury brands.

While the presence of the Japanese brand in America hasn’t exactly been all that extensive, Shu Uemura has made a name for itself with near-cult-favorite products such as its perfect eyelash curler, Tokyo Lash Bar and cleansing oils. Though not all hope is lost, as all items will still be available for purchase via ShuUemura-USA.com. That’s awesome in terms of make-up and skincare you’re already familiar with, but this move will make it tougher to familiarize yourself with brand-new products . . . and you won’t be able to test anything out before purchasing.

With the South Coast Plaza storefront already shuttered, the Internet is our only hope. Which sucks. Am I overreacting? No.

The least I can do, then, is offer a quick rundown of some must-haves.

CLEANSING OILS, $35-$72
A great alternative to cleansers that can easily cause that dry, tight-skin feeling, Shu Uemura’s world-famous Cleansing Oils are the No. 1 reason I’m going to miss having the store just down the 55 from me. Just rubbing a small amount of the oil on your face removes even waterproof makeup and cleanses skin at the same time. There is a number of oils available to suit all skin types, from oily to dry to combination. The newest addition is the Whitening Recovery Brightening Cleansing Oil, which promises to deliver bright, smooth, translucent skin. The pricing may seem a bit high, but even a 5-ounce bottle will last well more than a year.

EYELASH CURLER, $19
This one’s even for all those gals with the near-nonexistent lashes: The Shu Uemura eyelash curler has gained a reputation as the best curler out there. Its unique shape somehow extends your lashes like you’ve never seen before, while delivering a natural look—and all without the painful pinching and crimping. No, seriously: Everything you’ve heard about this is true.

TOKYO LASH BAR, $12-$65
This one’s not exactly totally replaceable online: The Shu Uemura Tokyo Lash Bar showcased its extensive gallery of false eyelashes, from the lushest, most natural pieces to rainbow-colored, theatrical, Bob Mackie-type opulence. Encased in clear acrylic, the unique displays made it easy to “try on” the lashes before purchase. Best yet, the eyelash glue dries clearer than any other I’ve encountered. While false lashes are hardly a daily must-have (mine come out once a year at Halloween), Shu Uemura’s might just make you think twice about wearing them more often.
