How Old Princess Diana Was When She Married Prince Charles and Why It Spelled Trouble

Age differences in notable marriages are always a point of contention, though this hasn’t been much of a problem in the British royals family compared to Hollywood.

Most of the marriages we’ve seen with the Windsors have been to spouses within their general age groups. Charles and Diana were the exception with a 12-year age gap.

Making things more controversial was Diana being only 20 years old, and Charles 32 when they wed in 1981.

Was the age difference the real problem, or could they have still made it work had it not been a marriage of royal convenience?

May-December marriages were not uncommon in 1981

There were a lot of wide age differences going on in the world of celebrity back in the early 1980s. It’s been going on a lot longer in Hollywood, even back to the earliest days.

For the Windsors, there wasn’t too much of a track record by this point. Queen Elizabeth and Philip were only five years apart when they married in 1947. That seems to be the perfect age balance for most couples considering these royals set a top bar for marriage durability.

Marrying for real love, though, has usually been in the cards for the Windsors. If some of those ultimately fell apart, love still endured past divorce. Prince Andrew and Fergie are good examples of still having a bond to this day, despite officially separating.

We all know by now Charles and Diana didn’t marry for love. Then again, there were hints they had some elements of love for one another at times.

Charles obviously wanted someone his own age

Camilla Parker Bowles was only a year older than Charles, clearly making them a better match on the age spectrum. It still makes us wonder what would have happened had they married as they should have in 1981 rather than to Diana.

We’re always reminded that had Charles married Camilla then, William and Harry would have never existed. Likewise for the beneficial evolution of the royals through Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle.

Let’s assume everything horrid happens for a reason and usually begets something better down the road. History may look at Charles and Diana this way, outside of Diana being more or less a patsy in changing things.

At least Diana also changed the royal family when alive. Charles might have loved her just for this.

Was there just enough love between Charles and Diana to make it tolerable?

There were times when Diana acknowledged a bit of love and respect for Charles, plus vice versa. Maybe it was just forced to try to make their marriage work when it would inevitably fail.

Perhaps they did have slight feelings for each other, just enough where marriage seemed feasible rather than pure insanity. By the early 1990s, nobody would have thought this, yet we have to imagine there were times in the 1980s when they felt they could make things work.

Charles admitted to being charmed by Diana during their early days together. Trying to imagine a greater love between them may be simply relegated to fiction nowadays if anyone’s still into such things.

In truth, a real love between them might have meant staying together, no matter what their age difference was.

Maybe age really is just a number

May-December marriages still continue today, if mostly in showbiz circles. Some of them do work well, outside of being based conditionally on love and respect for one another.

Generational differences can sometimes be very workable when someone younger has the so-called “old soul” tendencies we see so plentifully. Likewise, it can happen the other way if the older spouse is a “young soul.”

Charles was very much a man who supported things from his own generation, however, making the Charles-Diana marriage ultimately doomed while being a necessary part of British history.

Celebrities and fans honor Princess Diana more than two decades after her death

I met her Royal Highness, Princess Diana when I was shooting the sequel to A Fish Called Wanda. The truth is I didn’t meet her. She was to visit our set deep in the gardens of Pinewood Studios with her children and we waited for her all morning and then when we took a break midday, I raced via golf cart to my dressing room to use the restroom. While I was in there someone came knocking on my door saying that Princess Diana and her children had arrived on set and as I raced back in the golf cart, they were already walking away. The next day I wrote her a note explaining my nature break and how disappointed I was not to tell her, in person, how much I admired her. A hand delivered letter from Kensington Palace, on her stationary, came the next day thanking me for mine and understanding completely the need for nature to take it’s course. We exchanged a hope that we would get to meet in the future. Later that summer I heard about her shocking death. I remember turning off the television knowing what the media was going to do. I picked up a book on meditation which was next to my bed by Joseph Goldstein and Jack Kornfeld. In it it said that at the time of death, people who try to live mindfully, ask themselves only two questions. Did I learn to live wisely? Did I love well? I thought about her and her life and the choices she made and how brave she was, how she reached out to that young man with AIDS before anyone did, the mine fields, mental health and so much more and how much she loved her children, the image of them running into her outstretched arms after a long trip. It gave me comfort that although her life was short, it was complete. She was a great role model for me. An example to live by. I honor her today.

Princess Diana left an undeniable mark on the royal family, especially when it came to her role as the mother of two princes. From sending William and Harry to nursery school instead of having them home-schooled, to letting them eat pizza and potato skins, she paved the way toward making royalty more like any ol’ family (that just so happens to live in a palace). And her just-a-typical-mom mentality shone through even before her kids were born.

Home births were the norm for royal and non-royal families alike until the 20th century, but royals being royals, they weren’t about to change tradition just because hospital deliveries were becoming popular. George VI was born at Sandringham Estate in 1895, Queen Elizabeth II was born at her grandparents’ home in 1926, and Prince Charles was born in Buckingham Palace in 1948. So when Princess Diana headed to the hospital to give birth, it caused quite the stir.

Prince William was the first future monarch to be born in a hospital when his mother opted for the Lindo Wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in 1982, following the footsteps of her sister-in-law, Princess Anne. That day also set the precedent for future royal births. Not only did Diana go back to St. Mary’s to give birth to Prince Harry, but Kate Middleton welcomed all three of her and William’s children in that same hospital. Find out which other 14 pregnancy rules royal women have to follow.

But that wasn’t the only way Diana changed royal birth traditions. Queen Victoria had given six natural births before discovering anesthetics—chloroform, at that point—in 1853. She famously hated pregnancy but loved the modern medicine, declaring it “that blessed Chloroform … soothing, quieting, and delightful beyond measure.” Queen Elizabeth II is said to have continued the tradition with three of her four babies by using drugs to enter a “twilight sleep” that would keep her from being fully awake during their births.

Diana, meanwhile, had “the first active royal birth” and delivered Prince William while standing up, natural childbirth Sheila Kitzinger, who attended to the birth, wrote in her memoir, which was published in excerpt form on the Daily Mail. Kate Middleton followed Diana’s footsteps, opting for a “natural birth” for all of her kids. Check out these 21 adorable royal baby photos from throughout history.

With a new royal baby on the way, only time will tell if Meghan Markle ends up following in Diana’s footsteps or taking on the tradition of earlier royal women. Rumors are circulating that she’s considering either Frimley Park Hospital or a home birth. Whatever she and Prince Harry decide, they can thank Diana for the fact that either choice will be perfectly acceptable. Don’t miss these other royal rules Princess Diana changed for good.

Queen Elizabeth II greatly admires how Kate Middleton is juggling her royal duties as the UK’s Duchess of Cambridge while being a hands-on mom, sources told royal expert Katie Nicholl for Vanity Fair on Friday.

“The Queen is a fan,” said the source. “Kate is unflappable. Her mantra is very like the queen’s keep calm and carry on approach in life, and she has the added benefit of making the royal family seem almost normal and in touch.”

Nicholl shared Elizabeth, 93, “is so grateful to the duchess who remains one of the most popular members of the family.” The mother of three, 37, is back to work after enjoying a break in Norfolk where she was spotted shopping for Halloween costumes with her children.

Nicholl also revealed the matriarch is especially proud of Middleton’s recent royal tour of Pakistan alongside her husband Prince William after the daughter-in-law received the Royal Family Order, the highest honor the monarch can bestow on a female member of the royal family.

“It feels very much like this has been Kate’s year,” Middleton’s biographer Claudia Joseph told Nicholl. “She looks happy, in control and there’s a new confidence about her. I think Kate seems much happier than a year ago. She has three lovely children, has been honored by the queen for her hard work and is really well-liked not just here but around the world.”

Joseph pointed out that there’s a good reason why Middleton continues to be a popular royal over the years.

“She’s very much the girl next door, from how she dresses to how she behaves and interacts with people on engagements,” said Joseph. “She is likable and relatable and has made her very popular.”

Despite being a duchess, Nicholl pointed out Middleton still shops on the High Street for bargains and was even spotted drinking at a local pub, making her appear “refreshingly normal.”

Locals have also shared that in addition to joining other parents for a pint, Middleton also participates in the school run and drives the children herself. When not working at her office, Middleton frequently does the shopping and cooks for her family. She also loves to take her youngest son Prince Louis, 1, to local playgrounds and for walks in Kensington Park Gardens.

Sources close to Middleton also told Nicholl that while the royal was initially very cautious about being photographed in public with the children, she has a more relaxed approach these days. She and William, 37, were noted to have exchanged friendly conversations with the press back in Pakistan.

“They seem to be making a real effort and it’s paying off,” another source added. “They are getting great press.”

“As a couple, William and Kate seem stronger than ever,” said Joseph. “They are charming as a family and I think you can see how happy and confidant Kate is.”

And Middleton is already gearing up for the near year. In 2020, she will continue her work with young people in the UK, specifically focusing on young children and “the importance of positive and healthy early childhoods.”

“It’s something she is passionate about and a long term project,” said a palace aid. “You will see much more of this kind of work in the near year. She’s very much committed to the cause.”

The news comes just days after Nicholl shared Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, has been a “pillar of support” to Meghan Markle after the Duchess of Sussex admitted in a shocking documentary that the ruthless press scrutiny meant she was “existing, not living.”

“I think Camilla was probably just as surprised as anyone else when the documentary came out and perhaps didn’t realize how much Harry and Meghan were suffering,” a source close to Kensington Palace told royal expert Katie Nicholl for Vanity Fair on Thursday. “She wants everyone to get along and be happy. Her mantra is carry on and keep smiling. She doesn’t want to see anyone struggling and she is fond of Meghan and she could be a very good ally too.”

KATE MIDDLETON WRITES FIRST INSTAGRAM POST ABOUT ROYAL TOUR OF PAKISTAN WITH PRINCE WILLIAM

Nicholl shared that Camilla, who officially became a member of the British royal family when she married longtime love Prince Charles in 2005, is known for steering clear of family politics, as well as the personal lives of Markle’s husband Prince Harry and his brother William. However, she is well respected within the palace for her “genuine and compassionate nature.”

Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith pointed out the 72-year-old is the ideal royal to advise the 38-year-old, as someone who also married into the royal family and faced the tabloids for years.

Camilla was famously the subject of tabloids leading up to the 1996 divorce of Charles and Princess Diana of Wales. She was also targeted by the media when tapes of her phone calls with Charles, now 70, leaked to the press in 1993, resulting in what is now known as “Camillagate.”

Their relationship survived the numerous scandals and today, Camilla is viewed by the public as a royal dedicated to her duties.

KATE MIDDLETON ECHOES PRINCESS DIANA’S STYLE FOR PAKISTAN TOUR

“I think Camilla can easily empathize with Meghan because of what she went through in the media,” Smith explained. “At one stage, no one was more beleaguered by the tabloids than Camilla, but she was shrewd enough to know that antagonism would get her nowhere.”

“Meghan could learn an enormous amount from Camilla,” Smith continued. “I think Camilla is genuinely a kind person and while there are many differences the two of them, they have both been on the receiving end of some very negative press. The thing Camilla learned was how to cultivate a relationship with the press. I have watched her talk to reporters, be friendly with the photographers and win over the tabloids who had once tried to ruin her.”

Camilla isn’t the only royal who’s extending a helping hand. Nicholl shared Middleton has been in contact with Markle and is attempting to forge a better relationship between the couples after Harry hinted rumors of a sibling feud with William were true.

“On Sunday the erstwhile Fab Four will be together for the first time since the documentary aired at the Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, their first joint appearance since they were photographed at a polo match in the summer,” said Nicholl.

Meghan Markle: Six reasons why she divides people — even Americans

For a lot of people, especially in major urban and college cities, Meghan’s background would only bring on a shrug.

But, there is an old American saying that one drop of blood makes you black, and, in some of the most bigoted commenters’ eyes, makes you unfit to be a princess of the United Kingdom.

Says Kelley: “I never expected to see the sort of negative, derogatory and outright racist comments we have encountered in writing about Meghan’s style.”

This is even true when What Kate Wore runs a photo of the Duchess and Meghan at the same event, Kelley says.

Kensington Palace tried to attack this head on when Harry and Meghan were first dating in 2016. In an unprecedented statement, the Palace said: “His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public — the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments.”

Said the Palace: “This is not a game — it is her life, and his.”

That did little to stop the racist comments, and now Harry and Meghan face a future in which this is a day to day part of their lives.

If you think it will die down, just look at any internet post that is at all flattering to Camilla. The Diana fans are out in constant force.

2. She’s divorced

But racism isn’t the only thing that Meghan deals with.

The second most-frequently heard objection is that she is divorced, while Harry has never married.

The critics are conveniently forgetting that Princes Charles and Andrew are also divorced, as is Princess Anne. American first marriages still fail at a rate of 40 per cent to 50 per cent, although the British divorce rate has been dropping.

3. Unbelievably, her fashion

Commenters also have taken Meghan apart for her hairstyle, and fashionably loose-fitting clothing. It doesn’t help that she’s far more fashion forward than Kate, whose pristine public style often seems to have been voted on by a committee.

4. She ‘dumped’ her rescue dog

Fourth is an objection from animal lovers, who bemoan the fact that she left one of her aged rescue dogs behind when she moved to London from Toronto.

5. She’s American

I’m putting her American nationality at fifth, although you might argue that it should rank higher. Lots of us thought that the Royal wedding might cement and repair the “special relationship” between the US and Britain — our best for their best.

But that theory seems as much in tatters as the current political climate. Apparently, Harry was supposed to pick a red, white and blue bride echoing the British flag, not ours.

I’ve seen Facebook comments from my own American friends asking, “Why isn’t Harry marrying a British girl?”

There is plenty of sniping as well from British ex-pats who predict the marriage won’t make it past five years, and accuse Meghan of being a gold digger.

6. She’s a TV actress

That final critique applies to Meghan’s choice of an acting career. To be honest, I’ve never watched Suits, save for a glimpse at an episode or two to see what she did on the show.

In an era when quality television programs have swept over the networks, cable television and streaming services, Suits remains a guilty pleasure for its viewers and a skippable one for the rest of us.

Meghan might be a talented actress, with university degrees in drama and international affairs, but she’s never been showcased in the kind of TV that scoops up Emmy Awards and BAFTAs.

Would it make people feel better if Harry was instead marrying one of the better young actresses of our time, such as Emma Stone, Saoirse Ronan or Margot Robbie? Possibly.

It hasn’t gone unremarked that Meghan seems all too willing to ditch her acting career for activism. She won’t be like Princess Grace, who fended off many efforts to entice her back to film. For Meghan, been there, done that, now on to charity work.

But a slightly better professional resume might have quieted some of the haters. If you take all the complaints together, it adds up to one angry beehive. Says Kelley:

“The volume of comments that couldn’t be published on the blogs or that had to be deleted on the respective Facebook pages is far beyond anything I anticipated.”

All these reasons might not matter a whit historically. Thanks to the birth of Kate and Williams’ children, Harry is way down in the line of succession, so there’s only a miniscule chance of a King Harry and Queen Meghan.

Thus far, the pair have managed to smile their way through every crisis that takes place, including whether Meghan’s father, sadly in poor health, will walk her down the aisle.

But Meghan has married her prince at a time when the world is divided about almost everything, including her.

Unwittingly, that makes her the perfect Royal bride for our times.

Do Prince Charles and Princess Diana Really Have a Secret Daughter?

As far as the royal family (and most of the public) is concerned, Prince Charles and Princess Diana have two children — aka, their sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. However, absurd rumors suggest the Prince and Princess of Wales might have had a secret daughter.

Up ahead, we unpack the rumors that claim Prince Charles and Princess Diana might have had a daughter.

Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s secret daughter

Before Princess Diana married into the royal family, Queen Elizabeth allegedly forced the future princess to test her fertility — after all, Prince Charles needed an heir. According to Daily Mail, In December of 1980 (just months before her marriage to Prince Charles), Queen Elizabeth had Diana Spencer tested to confirm whether or not she could have children.

Rumors suggest that doctors harvested Diana’s eggs and successfully fertilized with Prince Charles’s sperm. Following the procedure, doctors had orders to destroy the embryo, but that’s not what (allegedly) ended up happening. Apparently, one of the doctors who examined the then 19-year-old did the unthinkable. Instead of destroying them, he “held one of the embryos back and implanted it in his own wife,” explains Daily Mail. To add to the insanity of the story, the doctor’s wife apparently didn’t know she was, essentially, Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s surrogate.

Who is this so-called “secret daughter?” Rumors suggest her name is Sarah and she was born in October 1981 (shortly after Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s royal wedding). In her late twenties, the alleged royal daughter’s parents died in a car accident. Following their deaths, she found a diary revealing her mother and father weren’t actually her biological parents and she was born from a “donated embryo” via IVF. Sarah reportedly searched for the donors, but she received a threatening message on her answering machine warning her to stop looking. The alleged secret daughter moved to the United States out of fear. She now allegedly lives in hiding in a small town in New England.

Do Prince William and Prince Harry have a sister?

Do Prince William and Prince Harry have an older sister? With the exception of their stepsister, Laura Lopes (who is a few years older than Prince William), probably not.

Princess Diana allegedly admitted to going in for fertility testing before marrying Prince Charles. But, to her knowledge, the eggs weren’t fertilized. And while her doctor could have stolen her eggs and gone forward with IVF without her knowledge, the elaborate claims are a bit crazy. In fact, they’re likely fiction.

According to the Daily Mail’s report, the story stems from Nancy E. Ryan’s book, The Disappearance Of Olivia. The fictional story follows a woman named Olivia Franklin who “admired Princess Diana and wanted to emulate her.” Olivia learns that she is Diana’s secret daughter via “fertility tests and procedures which somehow led to another woman being implanted with a royal embryo,” explains the Daily Mail. After the book was published, the possibility of Princess Diana having a secret daughter went from fiction to fact, as tabloids went wild for the story.

If this were true, we think it’d be the most groundbreaking news, ever. There have been rumors going around for years that Princess Diana has a secret daughter, but could it really be accurate? Yes, that would mean Princess Diana’s other children, Prince William and Prince Harry, have a sister, too! Scroll down for all the details on the rumors.

Did Princess Diana have a daughter?

Thanks to Globe magazine some royal fans are convinced that the late royal — she died in August 1997 after a fatal car crash — is a mom to a girl named Sarah (who is in her 30s) that lives in the US. However, so many are curious to know how she could possibly have a child who is older than her son, Prince William, 35.

According to the tabloid, before Diana married her ex-husband, Prince Charles, back in July 1981, Queen Elizabeth made the then-19-year-old test out her fertility! What?! Once she proved she was able to bear a child with Charles’ sperm, the fertilized eggs were ordered to be destroyed and the couple was then allowed to announce their royal engagement to the world.

And here comes the plot twist. Apparently one of the doctors kept one of the fertilized eggs to implant into his own wife. Crazy! The girl — who was allegedly born in October 1981 — grew up being called Diana’s “dead ringer.” Her parents were killed in a car accident when she was in her 20s, and she soon learned from reading a diary that she was a product of the royal couple. Now, after trying to figure out the truth about her life, she lives with a hidden identity. The most insane part? She’s reportedly met William’s wife, Kate Middleton. So bizarre if you ask us…

Diana and Charles with William and Harry in the ’80s.

In a previous resurfaced interview, Diana claimed her marriage to Charles fell apart because the couple never had a daughter even though Princess Diana and Prince Charles had two kids. “He wanted two children and he wanted a girl,” she explained. Charles was disappointed when he saw Prince Harry was a boy at birth (Diana kept the gender a secret up until then). Diana claims he said, “Oh God, it’s a boy,” when he met him, followed by, “and he’s even got red hair.” So sad…

The whole world is aware of the children of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Since the time that Prince William and Prince Harry were born, it seems that everyone is obsessed with learning everything about the two boys.

We watched as they first appeared outside St.Mary’s Hospital with their parents after birth, we watched them grow up, go to school, get married and eventually have children.

With the media constantly watching every movement of the royal family, it is hard to imagine that they might have secrets. However, many people believe that there is great royal news that Princess Diana was not even aware of.

So what’s this secret? Well, many people believe that Princess Diana actually had a secret daughter before she gave birth to William. If this were true, how could she have a daughter and not know about it? This is why some royal fans believe that Princess Diana had a secret daughter.

The story behind the rumor

Before Queen Elizabeth II allowed Prince Charles to marry Princess Diana, she had to ensure that Diana would be able to produce an heir to the throne. So Diana went to the fertility doctor and got one of her eggs.

To determine if she was able to have a baby, the doctor had to fertilize it with Charles’ sperm. After the egg was fertilized, the doctor had to destroy the embryo.

According to Daily Mail, it is rumored that the doctor did not destroy the embryo as instructed. Instead, he picked up the embryo and implanted it in his wife, so his wife didn’t know she was a surrogate for Charles and Diana’s child.

The child allegedly born as a result of that embryo was called Sarah. When Sarah was twenty, both her parents died tragically and she had discovered that she was born as a result of IVF and that her parents had received a donated embryo.

When Sarah tried to find her biological parents, she reportedly received death threats from an unknown source and was so scared that she moved to America.

Many people were disappointed that Sarah was unable to find out the truth about her birth until after Princess Diana died. Because Diana always liked being around children and allegedly wanted a daughter, people who believed that this story wished she had the chance to meet Sarah.

Why some royal fans believe that Princess Diana had a secret daughter

For years there have been whispers about Diana’s secret daughter. Most people wrote it off as nothing more than a crazy rumor. But recently the Globe had published a photo of the mysterious Sarah and people were able to comment quickly on the fact that the young woman seemed shockingly similar to Princess Diana.

Those who had been skeptical about the rumor now began to reconsider that there might be some truth, the story that was always considered nothing more than a myth.

Could there be some truth to the rumors?

Although it is undeniable that this woman shows a striking resemblance to Princess Diana, there is still not much chance that the woman is the deceased Diana’s daughter. There has long been a theory that every person in the world has at least seven other people who are like them.

Although that theory has never really been proven, if you do a quick Google search, you will find different websites that are designed to identify different known look-alikes. So apparently it looks like someone is in no way demonstrating a kind of biological relationship.

Princess Diana had also told her friend that she “had to be checked out” before she could marry Prince Charles, but there is no question of a fertilized embryo. This does not mean that the doctor still could not have put Diana ‘s egg somewhere and later used it in an IVF procedure, but not only would that have been unethical, it would also have been illegal and caught stealing a royal embryo would certainly be accompanied by quite serious legal consequences.

The ‘story’ continues …

In 2011, Nancy E. Ryan wrote a fiction book entitled The Disappearance of Olivia. The book is about a woman named Olivia, who has always honored Princess Diana. When she grows up, she discovers that she was actually the child of Princess Diana after someone was secretly implanted with the royal embryo.

Many people believe that this whole rumor started because of that book. It is possible that after some read the book, they desperately wanted the story to be true, so that they could bring life back to “The People’s Princess” in a certain way.

The royal family has yet to respond to the rumor, and until they do, there is no way to know for sure whether this mysterious woman actually shares part of Diana’s DNA.

But even without confirmation from the royal palace, it is safe to say that the chance is small that this story is in any way factual.

Why Princess Diana Was Seen as ‘a Problem’ to the Royal Family

Throughout Princess Diana’s tenure as a member of the Royal Family, she was seen as a problem. She was different and didn’t conform as easily as they may have wanted her to. There wasn’t a rule book for Diana to follow in her new role as the Princess of Wales. Things started to come to a head for her when she was pregnant with Prince William.

A new member of the Royal Family

Still a newlywed, she was feeling awful throughout the pregnancy and was still forced to endure very public engagements with her husband for the duty of the family and monarchy. She was virtually thrown into the deep end and told to sink or swim. She was trying to adjust to her new life and the fact that the media was constantly on her didn’t help matters.

Princess Diana never received a pat on the back or well wishes from her husband or her new family. For someone like Diana, that was critical. She came from a divorced household and wanted nothing more than to please Charles and the Royal Family. She didn’t feel like she was getting any love back in return and she was struggling inwardly.

Princess Diana was considered ‘a problem’

At the same time, she didn’t have the coping skills or life experience to fully grasp the change of pace in her life. On top of everything, she was pregnant for the first time. According to Andrew Morton’s royal biography of Princess Diana, called Diana: Her True Story – In Her Own Words, she was already considered a problem and a thorn in the side of the monarchy.

Princess Diana found comfort in bulimia nervosa, a binge and purge disorder. She also tried to hurt herself on multiple occasions, including while pregnant with Prince William. Princess Diana threw herself down the stairs and could have really injured herself. “She acknowledged that she was now seen by the rest of the royal family as ‘a problem,’” Morton wrote.

The bulimia was with her daily from almost the minute she became the Princess of Wales. The bulimia, coupled with Diana’s suicide attempts, made things harder for her in this new position she found herself in.

Eventually, Princess Diana was able to overcome it and became stronger than ever. She no longer tried to hurt herself, and instead was looking forward to a life full of meaningful work.

Princess Diana’s marriage to Prince Charles was already in shambles

Unfortunately, her newfound health did nothing for her already failing marriage. Prince Charles had long been carrying on an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, something Princess Diana could do nothing about no matter how hard she tried. She spoke to her husband about it on multiple occasions. She even went so far as to confront Camilla about it, which didn’t seem to do anything except let her know that she was aware of the affair.

Despite Princess Diana being “a problem” for the Royal Family, she did her best in her role. She was a loving mother to her sons and took part in meaningful charity work. She was at one point the patron of over 100 charities. She overcame her inner struggles and used her force for good. Even though Princess Diana tragically died in a car accident in 1997, she left an enduring legacy on the world.

Elton John Reveals His Strangest and Sweetest Memories of Princess Diana and the Royal Family

If songs like “Princess,” “The King Must Die” and “Snow Queen” are any indication, Elton John has a deep fascination with royalty. In Me, his newly published autobiography, John shows that his interest goes beyond the imaginary: he had many strange and fascinating interactions with members of the royal family over the years, from Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother to Princess Diana. His writing breathes humanity into a family almost always shrouded in rigid formality.

John’s relationship with the royal family began in the ’70s, when he was invited for dinner at Kensington Palace by Princess Margaret, who was a huge fan of music and musicians. But the dinner quickly devolved into a scene of marital strife between Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon, who would divorce in 1978. “He stormed in midway through the meal and literally snarled ‘Where’s my f-cking dinner?’ at her,” John writes. “They had a huge row, and she fled the room in tears.”

John’s growing stature in British culture — combined with the fact that he lived close to Windsor Castle — made his royal interactions more and more frequent. In the late ’70s, Prince Philip made fun of the bright yellow Aston Martin that John frequently drove around the neighborhood: “Makes you look like a bloody fool. Get rid of it.” The Queen Mum came over for a meal, after which they danced to her favorite record, an old Irish drinking song called “Slattery’s Mounted Fut.”

John had an even more memorable encounter with the Queen Mum’s daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, of whom John says, “In private, she could be hilarious.” At Prince Andrew’s 21st birthday party at Windsor Castle, John watched her reprimand the Viscount Linley about a familial matter: “The Queen lightly slapped him across the face, saying ‘Don’t’ — SLAP — ‘argue’ — SLAP — ‘with’ — SLAP — ‘me’ — SLAP — ‘I’ — SLAP — ‘am’ — SLAP — ‘THE QUEEN!’” John writes that when the Queen saw him watching, she winked at him before moving on.

But the most meaningful royal relationship John had was with Princess Diana. The pair met at the same party, and John immediately felt a kinship. “She was blessed with an incredible social ease, an ability to talk to anybody, to make herself seem ordinary,” he writes. He did notice, however, that despite her disdain of royal formality, she maintained a distant and frosty relationship with her husband, Prince Charles.

As the pair spent more time together, John many times bore witness to what he termed as the “Diana Effect” on men. At one dinner party, he observed as Richard Gere and Sylvester Stallone both became smitten by her and then nearly fought each other before getting disentangled, with Gere prevailing and Stallone storming off. “I never would have come if I’d known Prince f-ckin’ Charming was gonna be here,” John remembers Stallone grumbling. “If I’d wanted her, I would’ve taken her!”

“She could bring Hollywood superstars to the verge of a punch-up over her attentions at a dinner party, like a couple of love-struck teenager idiots,” John writes.

The pair fell out after Diana dropped out of writing the foreword to a rock photography book that gave its proceeds to the AIDS Foundation. “I think Buckingham Palace didn’t like the idea of a member of the royal family having anything to do with a book that featured shots of naked guys with towels draped around them,” John writes. They reconciled at Gianni Versace’s funeral — but it was to be the last time they saw each other, as Diana died in a car crash a few weeks later.

At Diana’s funeral, John sang a new version of “Candle in the Wind” with reworked lyrics by his writing partner Bernie Taupin. (“You called out to our country, and you whispered to those in pain,” the lyrics went.) When he recorded it, the song became an international bestseller, staying at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks.

But John wasn’t happy with the song’s success. “Why would anyone want to listen to it?” he writes. “It seemed unhealthy to me: morbid and unnatural. I really didn’t think it was what Diana would have wanted.”

John’s relationship with the family continues up through the present day. In April, he defended the Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after they were publicly criticized for using a private plane. “I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death,” he wrote on Twitter.

KATE Middleton is lucky because she “has the love and support of the Royal Family – unlike Princess Diana”, according to the Princess of Wales’ former butler.

According to the Express, Paul made the claim in Amazon Prime documentary The Diana Story.

He said: “Kate’s a very lucky woman because she has something which Diana never had,” adding that she has “the love and support of the Royal Family”.

He continued: “With that strength behind her, she can go the distance. She can go all the way. She doesn’t need anything else.”

Speaking of Kate and Prince William’s daughter Princess Charlotte, Paul claimed: “Diana always wanted a girl.”

As well as being Diana’s butler, Paul, 60, served as a footman for the Queen.

He began his royal career when he was 18, inspired to work for the monarchy after a childhood visit to Buckingham Palace from his coal-mining hometown of Grassmore, Derbyshire.

He became a close confidante of Diana, who once described him as “her rock”.

Earlier this month, Paul urged Meghan Markle to become close friends with Her Majesty.

On Channel 5 documentary Kate v Meghan: Princesses at War?, he told Meghan to “stay close to Harry and get to know his granny. She’s the one that matters most.”

He added: “Buckingham Palace… it’s like Downton on speed. They like things to stay the same.”
