Between groceries, clothes, and extra trinkets (that I just have to have), my purse is full of receipts. I bet you have handfuls of them lying around, too. I’m always looking for new ideas to make money and the number of ways to cash in by scanning your receipts is unbelievable.

If you’re looking for an easy way to earn money through one of many side hustles, and get free stuff like these birthday freebies, have you thought about turning your receipts into cash?

Scan Grocery Receipts to Earn the Most Money

Although it takes a little extra, using an app that requires you to scan your receipt usually have the highest payments. Scanning a receipt only takes a few seconds and the additional reward is well worth it because you can access more product offers than a run-of-the-mill coupon app.

1. Ibotta

Ibotta is the most well-known grocery receipt app and maybe you have family and friends that already use it. My wife and I personally use it when we buy groceries and highly recommend it because you can get cash back on many brand names you might purchase already.

If you only buy store brands, Ibotta’s “Any Brand” and “Any Item” offers each give you 25 cents to 75 cents for buying items like:

  • Sliced bread
  • Bananas
  • Coffee
  • Eggs
  • Milk

After you checkout, take a picture of your receipt and select the offers you want to redeem for this shopping trip and your cashback will be deposited within 48 hours. Some grocery stores let you link your store loyalty card directly to Ibotta; if so, your receipt will be automatically uploaded to Ibotta to save you time.

When you’re curious to see if there’s a discount for a product you want to buy, you can scan the product barcode using the Ibotta app to find any active offers.

In addition to the grocery savings, you can also get cash back at restaurants and select online stores when you make an in-app purchase. Periodically, Ibotta will offer $5 shopping bonuses just because they can. I made a purchase on eBay and received a $5 bonus just because I shopped online using the Ibotta app.

You can cash out your rewards balance for cash, gift cards, or charity donations when your balance reaches $20. Ibotta also offers $10 bonus cash when you make your first grocery purchase too.

Ibotta is available for Android and iOS devices in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Rewards points can be redeemed for Visa gift cards, retail gift cards, and merchandise rewards. You will also be automatically entered into Nielsen’s weekly, monthly, and quarterly cash sweepstakes when you submit a receipt.

Nielsen lets you scan with your Android or iOS device, but they will send you a scanner if you don’t have a compatible mobile device.

  • Sweepstakes (monthly cash prizes)

Grocery purchases always earn coins-rewards that can be redeemed for PayPal cash or Amazon gift cards. Depending on how much you spend, you will earn between five and twenty coins per receipt and receive an automatic entry into the monthly sweepstakes.

Attention, Walmart Shoppers: These 8 Tips Will Save You Tons of Money

Some of the links in this post are from our sponsors. We provide you with accurate, reliable information. Learn more about how we make money and select our advertising partners.

When my local Walmart Supercenter opened, I had to check it out. Getting everything from groceries to electronics under one roof for the lowest prices seemed like a pipe dream.

The store is known for its low prices and savings guarantees, and it didn’t take long to realize Walmart beat the prices of most items I purchased regularly, from health and beauty supplies to bananas and bread.

Once I started shopping regularly at Walmart, I stopped taking for granted that their prices were the lowest. Instead, I found ways to capitalize on their low-price guarantee and discovered other savings strategies that help lower my grocery bill.

Here are eight ways I save money when I shop at Walmart.

1. Use a Cash-Back App

One of the simplest ways to save money at Walmart (and a ton of other retailers) is to use a cash-back app like Ibotta.

The free app gives you money back on your purchases for uploading a photo of a receipt showing that you bought certain items.

Before your next Walmart shopping trip, download the Ibotta app and check out the available offers.

For example, right now you can score 25 cents back just for uploading your receipt. Other offers include $1.50 back on Hefty trash bags, $2 back on Scott paper towels, $2 back on Clorox laundry detergent and 25 cents back on any bacon purchase.

When you get home, just scan your receipt and the money will appear in your account within 48 hours, which you can cash out for gift cards or a PayPal deposit.

You can also read our Ibotta review to find out more about how it all works.

. Plus, you’ll get a $20 sign-up bonus after redeeming your first 10 offers within 14 days.

2. Make the Most of Walmart Price Match

Update: Walmart has changed its price-match policy in some stores, but not all, of its stores. We have details in this post.

Walmart will price match any current published sale. All you need to do is bring in the ad and show it to the cashier.

If you make your shopping list ahead of time, you can check local ads to find any better deals. Instead of driving to multiple stores, save yourself travel time and gas money by simply bringing the ads with you to Walmart and getting what you need there.

Don’t stop there, though. Walmart will also match online prices at specified online retailers, including Simply mention the advertised online price and the site where you saw it, and the cashier should make the adjustment for you.

Don’t forget to compare prices on things you might not normally think to price match, like groceries, deli and bakery items, and health and beauty supplies.

3. Shop Online and Use In-Store Pickup

If you’ve been comparing prices in your local Walmart store to those online at other retailers and find another store sells the item for less, Walmart will match the price. But sometimes even Walmart’s own online prices are cheaper than their in-store prices.

If you don’t want to do an in-store price match, order the items online and choose to pick them up. Most Walmart items sold on are available for pickup within 24 hours (and often on the same day). Simply put the item in your online shopping cart, select Free Pickup and choose your store location.

4. Download the Walmart App and Use the Savings Catcher

Walmart’s app allows you to make a shopping list, check in-store and online prices and availability, look at the weekly ad and more, saving you time and money in the process.

One of the best and easiest ways to save money with this app is the Savings Catcher. Simply scan your receipt using the app, or log into your account online and enter the receipt number, and Walmart will do all the work for you.

They’ll compare prices at local retailers, including current advertised sale prices, and if they find a lower price, they’ll credit you the difference on a gift card. Even better, you’ll get double the Savings Catcher Reward Dollars when you redeem them to your Bluebird Card.

5. Check End Caps for Clearance Items

Walmart changes its prices and marks down items throughout the week, according to a recent consumer data report covered by Lifehacker, making it difficult to pinpoint the best day to snag clearance and sale items. On the bright side, that means you can get good deals any day of the week if you know where to look.

When you’re not in a hurry, spend some time browsing your local store and become familiar with the areas where each department displays its clearance stock. Sale items are often placed in the back of a department or on end caps to force you past the full-priced merchandise in that section of the store. Sometimes they’re displayed with large “clearance” signs, but other times the sale items are a bit less conspicuous, and their locations can vary by store.

Don’t forget to look in the grocery, household cleaners, and health and beauty departments. You’ll usually find clearance sections with discontinued items or older models marked down significantly.

6. Use Coupons

Just because you expect Walmart to have the lowest prices doesn’t mean you can’t save even more by using coupons.

Check couponing websites, the inserts in your Sunday paper and even for coupons that can save you big bucks on items you’re planning to purchase. If that sounds overwhelming, here’s a system to keep your coupons organized.

While Walmart doesn’t double coupons or allow coupon stacking, they will give you cash back if the coupon is for more than the item you’re purchasing. For example, if you have a coupon for $2 off your favorite shampoo, but the item is on sale for $1.50, the cashier will apply the remaining $0.50 to another item in your order. If you’re not buying any other items, he should give you back the $0.50 in cash.

7. Shop Early

If you’re looking for the best deals on meat and other perishables, try setting your alarm clock a little earlier than usual. In my experience, stores usually mark down meat and produce close to their “sell by” dates in the morning. The exact time can vary by store, so check with the managers of your store’s meat and produce departments to know when you should be shopping.

By getting to the store an hour earlier than usual, you’ll increase your chances of finding a great deal on meat or packaged fruits and veggies. (Then you’ll have to make sure you’ll use them or freeze them quickly.)

8. Buy Yesterday’s Baked Goods

Another department to check early in the day is the bakery, where yesterday’s baked goods will usually be marked down for a quick sale. There’s nothing wrong with yesterday’s bread or muffins, and if you’re not going to use them right away you can always freeze them.

If you do find that a loaf of bread is a little stale, you can always revive it in the microwave or oven, or with a little celery.

While Walmart’s prices are already quite low, I’ve used these strategies to lower my grocery bill even further. If there are other techniques you use to save more money on your Walmart bill, I’d love to hear them!

As I have gotten older, I have started to appreciate any time I get to spend with my girlfriends so much more. Some of us live in the city while others have opted for the suburbs. To add even more layers to our group, we’re all experiencing different life stages too. Though we may be different, our conversations always flow easily from our careers and our passions to our families and even ways we’ve found to save money.

During one of our most recent nights in, we ended up diving into where we shop and which stores we favor most for different items. Of course, Walmart was a fan favorite! As a result, it was inevitable for us to share our views on Walmart’s recently announced decision to stop supporting their Savings Catcher program.

Like so many others, a few of my friends have saved hundreds by submitting their receipts to Walmart who then reimburses them if they found products offered at lesser prices. Some have used their savings from Savings Catcher to pay for vacations, others have rolled their money forward to pay for future shopping trips, and a few have opted to save up their savings in order to purchase holiday presents. Naturally, the closure of the program is an upsetting one!

Outside of using Savings Catcher, I’ve also found Shopkick is a great way to save even more. While I won’t be able to continue to use Savings Catcher, I can still continue to use Shopkick. So, I shared three ways my friends can join me and start using my go-to shopping app, and I thought I would share them with you too!

1. Earn Kicks Without Making Purchases:

The biggest bummer about Savings Catcher is you can only save when you discover a product you’re purchasing is offered less at another retailer. With Shopkick, you can earn kicks whether you’re making purchases or not. Open the app when you’re walking into stores and earn kicks simply because you went inside of a store. Scan products while you’re walking around (you can even scan at Walmart!) to continue to earn. Watch videos in the app, and discover new inspiration by viewing lookbooks at home. I think saving when you’re not spending is a total win, but of course you’ll earn gift cards much faster if you make purchases.

2. Shop Online & In-Store:

You can use Savings Catcher online and in Walmart’s stores, but those are the only places where the program works. With Shopkick, you can earn kicks at a complete variety of retailers both in-stores and online. Some stores offer opportunities to earn by walking in, scanning, and submitting your receipt, and others offer the chance to earn kicks when you purchase your items with a credit card that’s linked to your Shopkick app’s account. I would much rather be able to save while I shop at a variety of stores I visit all the time than just at one store and only if I can find the product cheaper elsewhere (which takes time too).

3. Redeem Kicks for Gift Cards:

My friends are most upset about losing one way they frequently turn to, to save money, but I reminded them they can create a similar experience through Shopkick. Each time they earn kicks, they count toward their grand total. Once you earn as few as 500 kicks, which I’ve done in a single day of errands, you can redeem your kicks for a gift card to retailers you frequent, like Starbucks, Target, Amazon, and even Walmart. Use your gift card to treat yourself, help pay for items for a vacation, or to pay for gifts during the holidays (aka: all of the things you were doing through Savings Catcher, but now you can earn kicks through many avenues!).

My friends joined Shopkick during our girls’ night, which was the first time I ever witnessed so many friends joining an app at the same time. Savings Catcher users, join us and continue to save while also earning gift cards with Shopkick!

Make sure to download Shopkick for free, and join us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for more shopping inspiration!

P.S.: Even MSN recommends Shopkick as a replacement for Savings Catcher!

Walmart’s Savings Catcher program is going away this month

Walmart has announced that its Savings Catcher rebate feature will be discontinued soon. Walmart’s popular program allowed customers to get money back when a competitor beat Walmart’s prices on select items.

Walmart’s Saving Catcher will be discontinued on May 14

The last day to submit a Walmart Pay eReceipt to Savings Catcher for processing will be May 14, 2019. Team Clark’s Chelsea, an avid Saving’s Catcher user, received the following email from Walmart:

Dear Customer,
Here at Walmart, we’ve always been committed to providing you with low prices every day, so you and your family can save money and live better. Savings Catcher, which compares nationally advertised prices through submitted receipts, was designed to catch occasions when a competitor’s price on a particular item was found to be lower than what you paid for it at Walmart.
What we’ve learned through Savings Catcher is that our efforts to lower prices upfront on thousands of items across our stores is working. Walmart’s prices win most often when you submit your receipts, which tells us that the program’s intent has been met.
That’s why we have decided to discontinue the Savings Catcher receipt submission, effective May 14, 2019. After May 14, you will no longer be able to submit your Walmart Pay eReceipts to Savings Catcher. But don’t worry, the money you have on your Savings Catcher eGift Card will remain yours to spend until you’re ready to use it.
We want to thank you for your loyalty and your participation in the program. We’ll continue to work hard to offer you features and services that deliver on our promise to save you time and money—whether you’re shopping in our stores or online at

Walmart Pay

How to use Walmart Pay

Walmart Pay is a service provided through your Walmart app that lets you speed up the checkout process when you shop at Walmart stores. Use it to securely store your debit, credit and Walmart gift card information. You’ll use the convenient operation of your smartphone to check out instead of pulling out your cards, cash or loose change.

Download the Walmart app

Downloading the Walmart app to your smartphone is a way to take advantage of many conveniences and savings to make your shopping easier, quicker, organized and enjoyable. Here are just a few of the services you have access to with the Walmart app:

  • Fill prescriptions from the app
  • Make a shopping list
  • Scan product barcodes in-store to find prices, see product descriptions and read reviews
  • Order photo prints directly from your phone’s library
  • See Weekly Ads
  • Find a store
  • Create and find a baby or wedding registry

The Walmart app is compatible with both Android and iOS devices. Find the app in Google Play or the App Store, download it and sign into your account. You’re ready to set up Walmart Pay and use our additional services.

Sign up for Walmart Pay

Once you’ve downloaded your Walmart app, it takes less than 60 seconds to set up Walmart Pay. After setup, you’ll be able to use Walmart Pay from your smartphone each time you shop at any Walmart store.\

  1. Open your Walmart app.
  2. Tap Services at the bottom of your screen.
  3. Tap Walmart Pay.
  4. Select “”Set Up Walmart Pay.””
  5. Choose your preferred payment method. If you’ve already loaded multiple credit cards, debit cards or gift cards, you’ll see all of them displayed. Choose the one you want to use with Walmart Pay. You can change this at any time. If you haven’t added any payment methods yet or want to use a different one, tap the prompt that lets you add a debit or credit card. Choosing “”Not Now”” takes you to the screen where you can add a gift card.
  6. Accept the terms and conditions. Read the terms and conditions and press Continue if you agree with them. Choosing Cancel ends the sign-up procedure.
  7. Set up your four-digit passcode and Touch ID by choosing “”Go to Walmart Pay.”” You’ll be prompted to set up a passcode that you’ll use each time you check out. You can also set up Touch ID at this time for an extra layer of security and quicker access to the app.

Use Walmart Pay at the store checkout

To use Walmart Pay, shop as usual at any Walmart store. When you’re ready to check out, choose a self-pay lane or one assisted by a Walmart associate, just as you usually do.

  1. Scan your items as usual at the checkout lane.
  2. Use your Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) balances, such as WIC and SNAP before using Walmart Pay.
  3. Open your Walmart app, tap Services and tap Walmart Pay. Use Touch ID or enter your passcode to sign in.
  4. Your preferred method of payment will show at the bottom of the screen. If you have a gift card, that amount will automatically be used for payment first, unless you have it switched to “”off.”” If you’d like to change to a different credit or debit card, tap the Settings icon (it looks like a gear) at the top of the screen, and tap on the card you want to use. Tap Done at the bottom, and you’ll go back to the password page to complete your purchase.
  5. Hold your phone over the QR code that’s displayed on the PIN pad. As your phone scans the QR code, your payment is quick and secure.
  6. Listen for the chime that indicates your purchase is confirmed. You’ll also receive a message on your device when your eReceipt is ready.
  7. You’re done now. There’s no need to wait for a paper receipt; it’s stored in your Walmart app.

Benefits of using Walmart Pay

Walmart Pay is designed to make your in-store shopping more convenient and secure. You also have a number of additional benefits:

  • Simple returns: When you have an item to return, you don’t have to worry about lost receipts or storing paper receipts. All of your receipts remain in your Walmart app for you to access any time.
  • Green-friendly: By eliminating paper receipts, you’re making one more contribution to energy conservation and a more eco-friendly Earth.
  • Security: We use several layers of security to make sure your payment and personal information remains private. Our hardware technology — the scanners at the checkout stand — don’t use near-field communication (NFC) but your smartphone instead. This means the signal created when you scan in Walmart Pay does not transmit to any financial institution, only to Walmart’s server to say it’s fine to make the purchase. Also, your password or TouchID is required each time you make a purchase. This ensures that no one else can use Walmart Pay if you lose your phone. You also forego the PIN pad at the scanner, so no one can see your card’s passcode. Furthermore, your information is always encrypted over secure networks, and your card information doesn’t transfer to the store itself.
  • Budget-friendly: Because all of your Walmart purchases are kept in one place, you’ll be able to quickly see how much you’re spending each month on your groceries, household goods and other purchases.

What Walmart Pay cannot do

Walmart pay works in all Walmart stores, but it doesn’t work at Walmart fuel pumps or Murphy USA gas stations. This is because the app doesn’t connect directly to your bank. For the same reason, you can’t use Walmart Pay to receive cash back at the checkout at Walmart stores, and it doesn’t operate in Sam’s Clubs.

Walmart Savings Catcher changes: New rules for submitting receipts!

Editor’s note: Walmart’s Savings Catcher program is being discontinued in May 2019. Learn more here!

If you use Walmart’s popular Savings Catcher feature, there’s an important change to how you submit receipts.

Walmart Savings Catcher compares the prices of eligible items that you purchased at Walmart to local competitors and refunds the difference if it finds a lower price elsewhere.

When that happens, Walmart customers get money back in the form of an eGift card to use on future trips.

Walmart Savings Catcher changes are frustrating some shoppers

In an email to shoppers, Walmart announced that Walmart Pay is now the only way to submit your receipts to Savings Catcher as of October 29, 2018.

That means you CANNOT scan paper receipts within the app or submit them using a computer.

Since first told you about this change in September, some customers have said they’re not happy about it because they either don’t have a smartphone or like to pay with cash.

Here’s an excerpt of the announcement that was emailed to customers:

“At Walmart, we’re committed to making your shopping experience using the Walmart app quicker and more convenient. That’s why, on October 29, 2018, our Terms of Use for Savings Catcher will be changing, and Walmart Pay will be the exclusive way to submit your receipt to Savings Catcher. This will allow you to both submit and spend your Savings Catcher rewards within the same Walmart Pay experience. Due to this change, the ability to scan paper receipts within the app or submit via desktop will be discontinued.”

How to submit a receipt to Savings Catcher with Walmart Pay

Many Savings Catcher users have already been submitting their receipts with Walmart Pay, which allows you to store payment card information and Savings Catcher rewards on your phone.

Instead of scanning a paper receipt after paying, you’ll create an eReceipt using the Walmart Pay scanner at checkout. Here’s exactly how it works…

1. Open Walmart Pay and select a payment method (credit card, debit card or gift card)

2. Use Walmart Pay to scan the QR code at the register to generate an e-receipt

3. Tap “Submit Receipt” from the Walmart Pay confirmation page or from your Savings Catcher dashboard on the Walmart app

Important note: If you use cash back apps, Walmart says you can print your e-receipt. Just click on “Purchase History” in the app, then email yourself the e-receipt to print.

Not happy about the changes? How to contact Walmart

We’ve noticed that these changes haven’t been popular with readers. To let Walmart know how you feel, you can send a message through the Walmart app.

From the main menu, scroll down to “Give Feedback,” select “Savings Catcher” and enter your message.

iOS, Android: I’m not a huge Walmart shopper, but if I was—because they had a certain retro gaming system in stock, for example—I’d definitely make sure I was walking into the store, smartphone at the ready. You might think there’s nothing inherently special about Walmart’s app for Android and iOS, but it actually contains one clever little trick that could save you a decent amount of cash on your purchases over time.

When you make a big Walmart purchase, save the receipt. Pull up the app on your device, tap on the Services option at the bottom, and tap on Savings catcher. Log into the app if you haven’t already, and then use the app to scan the barcode that’s printed on your Walmart receipt. Easy as that. (You can also type in the receipt’s “TC” number if the barcode isn’t scanning for whatever reason.)

Walmart will then use its magical retail powers to investigate the prices for everything you purchased at a bunch of other retailers. If it finds a price difference in your favor, you’ll receive the difference as an electronic gift card—which you can then use to buy more stuff at Walmart, of course.

Walmart’s little Savings Catcher option comes with a few catches itself. First off, you can only submit up to seven receipts per week. If you’re a heavy Walmart shopper, make sure you’re using Savings Catcher for the big binges instead of, say, the pack of gum you got. Savings Catcher also only works with a limited range of item categories: groceries, consumables (like paper towels), and “health and beauty” items. So, no, you won’t suddenly get $20 for free because another store else had the NES Classic on sale.

Still, if you head out to the local Walmart for those kinds of purchases, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t use Savings Catcher to save a few bucks. It only takes a few seconds to scan receipts. If you’re lucky, maybe the app will find a buy-one, get-one offer somewhere else, which could really add up in your favor.

Do you have an iOS or Android app that you absolutely love? Tell me about it: [email protected]

Walmart has billed itself as the low-price leader, and they are usually hard to beat…but they don’t always have the lowest prices. Using the Walmart app is a great way to “catch” them when they don’t.

The Walmart app’s Savings Catcher is, essentially, a price matching tool. After you shop at Walmart, you can scan your receipt with the app, and it will “scan circulars from top competitors in your area” for the same items you bought. If it finds a store offering an item for a lower price than you paid, Walmart will refund the difference to you.

These refunds come in the form of an “eGift Card” that you can use on your next purchase at any Walmart or Sam’s Club location.

You might be surprised just how quickly things add up.

How to Scan Your Receipts with the Walmart Savings Catcher

First, download the Walmart app for Android or the iPhone. Create an account if you don’t have one…

…or sign in if you do.

After you sign in, tap “Savings Catcher” on the Shop tab.

Tap “Add a Walmart Receipt”.

Scan the QR code on your receipt. If there isn’t a QR code, scan the barcode. If the barcode won’t scan, you can enter it manually by tapping “Type Receipt Info”.

NOTE: you must scan your receipt(s) within seven days of shopping at Walmart and you can only submit seven receipts per week!

Once you scan your receipt, you will receive an email letting you know that Walmart has received it and they are validating it.

If they find a lower price, you will receive another email letting you know how many “Reward Dollars” you’re getting back.

Any Reward Dollars you get back are automatically added to the Savings Catcher. Once you have available, unclaimed funds, you can generate an eGift Card to spend at any Walmart or Sam’s Club location (although you can only scan Walmart receipts).

To do this, tap “Get It Back” in the lower-right corner.

On the Get It Back screen, tap “Transfer to eGift Card”.

Once you do this, you will receive an email—usually within 24 hours—confirming your new Savings Catcher eGift Card is ready.

Next time you visit a Walmart or Sam’s Club, just present the email at checkout and the cashier will scan it, or select “Gift Card” when you’re checking out online. Your eGift Card funds will be deducted from your purchase.

Here are several more things to keep in mind:

  • You don’t have to spend your entire eGift Card balance in one go. Any remaining funds will remain on the eGift Card. You can repeatedly use the eGift Card email until it hits zero.
  • You don’t have to transfer any accumulated money the Saving Catcher finds to an eGift Card right away. Instead, you can let it accumulate and tap “Get It Back” when you’re ready to redeem it.
  • When you do tap “Get It Back” however, you will need to wait for Walmart to generate a new eGift Card and send you a confirmation email. Make sure to plan ahead so you have those funds available before your next shop.

That’s the basic rundown on how to use the Savings Catcher, and if that’s all you ever do with it, you will be saving money in no time.

How to View Your Rewards Dollars, Shopping History, and eReceipts

If you want to go back and see previous scanned receipts and reward dollars, you can do so from the app.

To see a total of how much you’ve been refunded, tap on “Your Reward Dollars”.

The Your Reward Dollars screen shows you how much money you have earned and redeemed since opening your account, as well as how much you have available.

Next, tap “Your Results”.

On the Your Results screen, you can scroll through and see your shopping history using the Savings Catcher.

Tap on any result to see the Results Details, where you can view a detailed list of what you purchased, how much you paid, and what each item cost. If any receipt is pending, it will show you that as well.

If a lower price was found from a scanned receipt, it will show you what that item was and how much you got back.

Tap the little icon in the upper-right corner to view your eReceipt.

The eReceipt is an electronic copy of your receipt. This can be useful if, for example, you lose the original paper receipt and need to present a copy for reimbursement or perhaps to itemize deductions on your taxes. As long as you remember to scan your receipts within seven days, the Savings Catcher can net you quite a chunk of change over the long run. If your goal is to stretch your money as far as it will go, it’s definitely a great tool to have at your disposal.

The easy way to get free money at Wal-Mart

A customer counts his cash at the checkout lane of a Walmart store in the Porter Ranch section of Los Angeles Thomson Reuters Wal-Mart is giving away free money to users of its shopping app.

Customers can snag the money by using the app’s Savings Catcher tool, which scans shoppers’ receipts and compares the prices they paid at Wal-Mart to the prices advertised for the same items elsewhere.

If the app finds a lower advertised price, then Wal-Mart will issue a gift card in the amount of the difference.

The tool is wildly popular.

When Savings Catcher launched nationally in August of 2014, users of Wal-Mart’s app spiked from 4 million users to 14 million in a single month, reports Shelly Banjo at Quartz.

Now it’s the third most successful retail app after Amazon’s and eBay’s.

The app is likely so popular because of how often users get money back.

Wal-Mart executives said in February that about half of the receipts that the app had processed until that point had qualified for a refund because it found lower prices at different stores.

“The psychological benefit is huge,” Banjo writes. “Now, instead of checking other retailer’s prices every week, shoppers get in the habit of visiting the Walmart app after each trip to see how much money they saved.”

Users can take advantage of the tool in three ways.

They can either scan the code at the bottom of their printed store receipts using the scanner in the Savings Catcher section of the Wal-Mart app, or enter their receipt number into the app.

Shoppers can also enter their receipt number into the Savings Catcher website.

The tool will scan all the items they purchased and compare the prices to those found in print and online versions of weekly ads for top retailers in their area.

Shoppers can submit up to seven receipts a week.

How to Make Money on eBay Selling Walmart Items

Your local Walmart carries all kinds of items that are good sellers on eBay. You might be thinking, “Why would anyone buy these items on eBay, when they can just go to a WalMart and buy them?” That is the point, maybe they can’t.

Walmart isn’t accessible to everyone in every corner of the world, nor do all Walmarts carry the exact same merchandise. Learn what to buy at Walmart to resell on eBay for profit.

Part of the trick of selling Walmart items is knowing on what eBay international site to list them. Some of the items below will sell best on a site other than eBay USA.

Examine the sports fan apparel for your local sports teams. I live in Atlanta, Georgia. My local Walmart is stocked with University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Atlanta Falcons, and Atlanta Braves fan apparel. But, there are fans of these sports teams all over the world who can’t necessarily go to a Walmart to purchase them. Try selling football jerseys, hoodies, jackets, tshirts, and flags. You can make some really big profits selling fan apparel and accessories if a local team makes it to the playoffs.

Electronics. The big one here is the Wii or whatever the latest and greatest video game system is. Buy electronics before the holiday season and put them up for sale in mid-November. Also keep an eye on the popular Wii games – last year’s hot game was Guitar Hero. Check the eBay Pulse for what’s hot in the category of video games.

Disney items. Last year, the rage was Hannah Montana and High School Musical, and a few years prior to that the rage was Lizzie McGuire. Get in touch with the tween generation and find out what (and who) they are going nuts over. Hannah Montana bedding sets sold for 3 times the Walmart shelf price because the items were so scarce, yet kids wanted them for Christmas and their parents were willing to pay.

Toy sellers on eBay make a killing during November and December but you have must have the flexibility and availability to go shopping at 2 AM to get the “hot toy” as soon as it is stocked. Pay attention to the hot Barbie items, Fisher Price toys (especially electronic learning toys), LeapFrog/Leapster systems and games, and the latest Lego sets. Harry Potter sets do well. Toys do exceptionally well year round on eBay UK, eBay Canada, and eBay Australia.

Action figures. Look for whatever the latest trend or popular movie hero is – at the time of this writing the big movies are Batman and Indiana Jones. Star Wars figures are always popular, especially on eBay UK and eBay Europe.

Kids digital cameras. The most popular camera is called the Fisher Price “Kid Tough” camera and comes in pink or blue. There is even an underwater version. These sell at Walmart for about $48.00. On eBay UK, they sell for about $85. Deduct your fees, and this item alone can bring about $30 in just one sale. Just go to eBay UK and search the completed listings and do your research before setting your starting price.

Food. People all over the world love our American junk food (even though it is killing us). In the UK, they want Lucky Charms. The Lucky Charms leprechaun holds a special place in the hearts of the British and Irish people. You can sell boxes of Lucky Charms for about 3 times the Walmart price. They aren’t buying the cereal for the taste, they are buying it because it is a novelty and they like the little leprechaun. Other good selling food items include Oreos, M&Ms, Flaming Hot Cheetos, Tabasco Sauce, Hidden Valley Ranch powdered dressing mix, Kool-Aid powdered drink mix, barbeque sauces, Altoids mints, and gum.

Discontinued items. Cosmetics and skin care products are constantly being discontinued and these items can go for big money on eBay. At one point in 2008, a $10 tube of Aveeno cream was selling for $40 because it had been discontinued. See the resources section for more info on discontinued items.

Check your local Walmart for special regional foods. In Atlanta, our stores carry pecan logs and speckled grits, which are a local favorites. Test market cities also have items that aren’t found elsewhere. (We had the raspberry M&Ms before anyone else.) See what you can find that is unique to your area.

See the resources section for more information on how to make money selling Walmart items on eBay USA and on international eBay sites.

Always do your research before selling anything on eBay. Fads and trends pass quickly. What is hot today may not be hot next week.

Before selling on an international site, read the “prohibited items” section. Different countries have different laws regarding what can and cannot be shipped in. Make sure the item is allowed before listing it.
