5 unlikely foods you should be eating to stop your hair turning grey

While some people embrace their grey hair – it’s entirely natural and sometimes, it can look really good – most people do everything they can to try and get rid of it and end up spending a lot of money on hair dye.

But could there be cheaper and easier ways to be banishing the dreaded grey? The answer, thankfully, is yes. Here are five foods that can ward off white hair.

1. Walnuts

“Eating walnuts, which are rich in copper, stops hair going grey,” says Marisa Peer, therapist and author of You Can Be Younger. It’s all about copper being crucial in melanin production, and melanin giving hair its pigment.

2. Prawns

Experts also say high levels of zinc are important in keeping colour in your hair, which means including zinc-rich foods like prawns, other shellfish, seeds and cheese.

3. More prawns

That miraculous Omega 3 isn’t just good for your heart, it’s important to keep your hair strong too. Good sources are fish (again), seeds (again), and green leafy veg (another health-food stalwart).

4. Chicken

Low levels of Vitamin B12 can lead to dry, thinning and prematurely greying hair (as well as a whole host of other health problems like fatigue and shortness of breath). Keep your levels – and hair colour – topped up by consuming lots of poultry, eggs, cheese, milk and (yes, once again) seafood.

“We know that stress uses up vitamin B and some studies have shown that taking large doses of certain B vitamins (B6, B12, folic acid) have begun to reverse the process of greying in 3 months,” says trichologist Sara Allison. “The hairs revert to white when the vitamins are stopped.”

5. Broccoli

The need for folic acid is commonly linked to pregnant women, but it can also be linked to better hair health – lack of it can cause premature greying. Get yourself stocked up and eat lots of broccoli, asparagus, beans, peas and lentils.

Don’t eat refined sugar

It’s bad for pretty much everything else so it’s no real surprise eating refined sugar has an added ‘bonus’ of speeding the ageing process and making your hair greyer quicker too.

Don’t smoke

As above. Bad for everything else, also bad for the ageing process – research a couple of years ago in Chicago found a direct link between smoking and going grey before 30.

Don’t forget to get some sunshine

Hair follicles have Vitamin D in them, “therefore, it’s no surprise if Vitamin D reverses grey hair,” says Sara. “Get some sunshine on bare skin for 20 mins per day to increase vitamin D.”

Any deficiencies of vitamin B-6, B-12, biotin, vitamin D, or vitamin E can contribute to premature graying.

One 2015 report in the journal Development notes various deficiency studies on vitamin D-3, vitamin B-12, and copper and their connection to graying hair. It finds nutritional deficiencies affect pigmentation, suggesting color can return with vitamin supplementation.

A 2016 study reported in the International Journal of Trichology looked to factors related to premature graying in young Indians under 25 years of age. It found low levels of serum ferritin, which stores iron in the body, vitamin B-12, and the good cholesterol HDL-C were common in participants with premature hair graying.

Genetics

Premature graying of a person’s hair is largely connected to genetics, according to a 2013 report in the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology.

Race and ethnicity play roles, as well. Premature graying in white people can start as early as 20 years old, while a person can be as young as 25 years old among Asians, and 30 years in African-Americans populations, according to the same 2013 study.

Oxidative stress

While graying is mostly genetic, oxidative stress in the body may play a part when the process happens prematurely.

Oxidative stress causes imbalances when antioxidants are not enough to counteract the damaging effects of free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage cells, contributing to aging and disease.

Too much oxidative stress can promote the development of diseases, including the skin-pigment condition vitiligo. Vitiligo may also turn the hair white due to melanin cell death or the loss of cell function.

Certain medical conditions

Some medical conditions, including autoimmune diseases, may increase a person’s risk for graying early. In fact, research published in 2008 showed a connection between hair abnormalities and thyroid dysfunction.

White hair is also common in alopecia areata, an autoimmune skin condition that causes hair loss on the scalp, face and other parts of the body. When the hair grows back, it tends to be white due to melanin deficiency.

Real-life stressors

There are conflicting research studies on real-life stress, such as that caused by injury, leading to premature graying.

One study from New York University, reported in Nature Medicine, finds that the cells responsible for hair color can be depleted when the body is under stress.

Other studies indicate that while stress may play a part, it is only a small part of a bigger picture where disease and other factors contribute.

Smoking

A study from 2013 reported in the Italian Dermatology Online Journal, shows that smokers are 2 1/2 times more likely to start graying before age 30 as non-smokers.

A 2015 study in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology also demonstrated that smoking is linked to premature white hair in young men.

Chemical hair dyes and hair products

Chemical hair dyes and hair products, even shampoos, can contribute to premature hair graying. Many of these products contain harmful ingredients that decrease melanin.

Hydrogen peroxide, which is in many hair dyes, is one such harmful chemical. Excessive use of products that beach hair will also eventually cause it to turn white.

During her post-divorce reinvention, Judy Allor decided to do something about the gray hair that had been coming in at her temples and around her ears since her early 50s. Highlights didn’t seem to take — so when Allor saw an advertisement in SkyMall magazine for a nutritional supplement that promised to stop the gray, she put in an order.

Within three months of taking two pills a day of Go Away Gray, Allor said she started noticing her natural light blond color replacing the gray spots. She said her hair felt as soft and silky as it had when she was younger, and her trips to the salon for highlights became fewer and further between.

“I call it vitamins for my hair,” said Allor, a retiree who splits her time between Florida and California.

Go Away Gray, a nutraceutical without FDA approval or any clinical trials supporting its effectiveness, is among several products being marketed to prevent gray hair.

Creator Cathy Beggan, a former real estate agent whose company, Rise-n-Shine LLC, sells 17 products promising help for everything from wrinkles to joint pain, said Go Away Gray is by far her company’s biggest seller (buy two bottles and get one free for $49.50). She points to customers like Allor as proof that it works, and claims that within six to eight weeks customers can see their natural hair color coming in at the root (it doesn’t change existing gray hair).

But is that proof enough?

A closer look

Dr. Gerard Mullin, associate professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and author of the book “The Inside Track: Your Good Gut Guide to Great Digestive Health,” cautions people to save their money.

“There’s been no credible research to validate their claim,” he said. “What they’re claiming is very hypothetical.”

Beggan created Go Away Gray in 2009 after coming across a study by researchers at the University of Bradford, in the United Kingdom, that found that reduced production of the enzyme catalase, which breaks down hydrogen peroxide, may contribute to graying hair. Hair cells naturally produce small amounts of hydrogen peroxide, but without catalase it builds up over time and blocks the normal synthesis of melanin that gives hair its color, according to the study, which was published in The FASEB Journal (it stands for Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology).

Beggan contracted with a vitamin manufacturer to produce a supplement containing 5,000 units of catalase plus other ingredients believed to promote healthy hair.

Mullin said the ingredients at the doses recommended are harmless. But “there is no proof whatsoever” that catalase ingested orally can survive the gastrointestinal process and affect the hair follicle. For those wishing to give it a shot, it would be cheaper to eat a bowl of catalase-rich blueberries, blackberries or radishes, he added.

Beggan said several overseas companies that wish to distribute the product require clinical trials, which she said are currently underway.

Catalase-based products aren’t the only ones touting anti-gray cures. L’Oreal has been researching a fruit extract that mimics the enzyme TRP-2, which helps make pigment-producing cells called melanocytes, and several media outlets reported the cosmetics company is working on a pill with an anticipated 2015 launch.

Three-quarters of people 45 to 65 have gray hair, according to a study published last year in the British Journal of Dermatology.

Aging is (unfortunately) inevitable, but gray hair doesn’t have to be! Turns out, there are certain foods with properties that can actually prevent graying of hair—so you can keep your locks streak-free for as long as possible (even without that box of hair dye!)

Tangerines

That’s right—this tasty citrus fruit has more benefits than just offering some sweetness and tang. “Tangerines are a great source of vitamin C, which is crucial in development of collagen protein, a connective tissue that makes up much of the body, including hair,” says Kelly Jones MS, RD, CSSD, LDN. Try a tangerine the next time you want a sweet snack, or use a few in one of these citrus recipes.

Fermented Foods

Probiotics aren’t just great for your digestive system—they’re also great your head! “Fermented foods like kimchi or sauerkraut provide probiotics to support gut health,” says Jones. And a healthy gut is important for hair health, as gut bacteria actually produce the B-vitamin, biotin, she explains.

Biotin deficiencies result in changes in hair color and strength, says Jones, such as making them brittle and more prone to thin out, so getting enough in your diet can keep your color lasting longer.

Salmon

Salmon provides a nice dose of vitamin D, which may be related to hair pigmentation, says Jones. “If someone has a true D deficiency present with premature grays, a D-3 supplement may help, but obtaining it through the diet with fatty fish like salmon can mean you’re getting many other nutrients to support hair and skin, such as omega 3 and protein,” she says. We’ll call that a win-win.

Eggs

While egg whites have lots of protein, you’ll want to eat the whole egg—including the yolk—if you want to reap hair health rewards. “Whole eggs provide Vitamin B-12 (a nutrient that isn’t obtained from plant foods),” says Jones. “A 2016 study showed those with premature graying were more likely to have low Vitamin b-12 status,” she says. Eat hard-boiled eggs as a snack or make eggs for a hearty breakfast that’s packed with nutrients. And if you’re a vegan, you should consider taking a vitamin B12 supplement.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is a good source of both iron and copper, two nutrients that are excellent for preventing gray hair and aging. “Low ferritin (the storage market of iron in our blood) has been linked to premature graying in one study, and while copper deficiency is rare, the nutrient is in part responsible for melanin production,” says Jones.

With aging comes lower melanin levels, so keeping those copper levels high can help combat the process. Enjoy a square or two for a sweet indulgence—your hair will thank you!

Grey hair is typically associated with ageing, but it turns out that those silver strands could also reveal a lot about your health.

Our levels of Vitamin B12 are suspected to play a huge role in the colour and condition of your hair, meaning greys could be a sign that you need to change up your diet.

‘When you go grey is genetically determined. For some, this is as young as 18, while others are well into their 40s before their first white hair appears,’ explains Anabel Kingsley, Trichologist at Philip Kingsley.

‘However, it has been suspected that low Vitamin B12 levels can add to the greying of hair. For example, premature greying may occur as the result of stress as stress can deplete Vitamin B12 levels.’

Anabel adds that reducing stress levels may be of help to prevent this – but you should also consider your diet and lifestyle choices.

‘Nutritional and hormonal factors may affect hair colour, as can illness and stress,’ explains Anabel. ‘One of the reasons for this is because illness and an improper diet can also deplete your body of vitamin B – and various studies have shown that a lack of Vitamin B12 can turn hair white prematurely.’

So is there any way to prevent grey hair altogether?

While you cannot delay when you are genetically programmed to turn grey, Anabel explains, ‘if you have a Vitamin B deficiency, adding foods rich in B vitamins, or a supplement containing them, may be useful in stopping premature greying.’

Additionally, lifestyle choices, such as smoking, can play a part in your greys.

Anabel explains, ‘In theory, stress and smoking may cause the hair to turn grey as they can deplete the body’s levels of Vitamin B12.’

To tackle greys, Anabel says, ‘As hair is non-essential, it is the last of the body’s tissues to receive nutrients – from the foods you eat or from supplements you take. Because of this, hair cells need higher levels of certain vitamins and minerals to function at their optimum rate.

‘The best hair-boosting supplements are multi-vitamins formulated for these unique needs.

‘Supplements taken for the hair should definitely contain iron. Iron is needed to produce hair cell protein, and a deficiency in this is the most common cause of hair loss we see in women.

‘A supplement should also contain vitamin C, as this helps the body to absorb the iron.

‘Biotin, Vitamin B12, selenium and Vitamin D are similarly vital, as are the essential amino acids, L-lysine and L-methionine. Studies show that these help to keep hair in its growth phase for its optimal length of time. Try the Philip Kingsley Tricho Complex, £45.’

Additionally, the NHS recommends meat, salmon, cod, milk, cheese and eggs as good sources of vitamin B12.

Can you keep grey hairs at bay?

Most of us expect to get a few grey hairs as we get older, but what can you do if you start turning silver before your time?

Few of us are thrilled when those silvery grey hairs start springing up. But for some, it feels as though we’re going grey earlier than everyone else. Although our genes are mainly to blame, could certain nutrients help keep your natural colour intact? Let’s explore the evidence.

Befriend those B vitamins

Research has found an association between a lack of B vitamins and premature greying. A small-scale Indian study in 2017 found that those who experienced premature greying also had deficiencies of vitamin B12 and folic acid, and lower levels of biotin (also known as vitamin B7).

To help maintain your natural colour, it may be worth boosting your B12 intake by filling up on fish, meat, poultry, eggs and fortified cereals, and leafy green veg such as spinach that are rich in folic acid. Vitamin B7 can be found in egg yolks and soybeans.

The role of copper

We don’t mean copper-coloured hair, but getting more copper in your diet to help keep greys at bay. A study published in the journal Biological Trace Element Research in 2012 revealed that copper concentration in the blood was significantly lower in those with prematurely greying hair than in those with their natural colour.

The study authors concluded that ‘a low serum copper concentration may play a role in premature greying of hairs in our society.’ Boost your copper levels by taking a copper supplement or eating copper-rich foods including black beans, sunflower seeds, cashew nuts and oysters.

Up your vitamin D and calcium

Another small study in 2013 found that vitamin D3 and calcium may also play a role in premature greying. Indian researchers discovered that calcium and vitamin D3 levels were ‘significantly lower’ in those with premature greys, and called for more studies to investigate the specific role D3 may have to play.

We need vitamin D to be able to absorb calcium properly, so a lack of one nutrient could lead to a deficiency in another. Our bodies make vitamin D from sunshine, but the sun isn’t strong enough during the autumn and winter months to get our quota.

Try taking a daily vitamin D3 supplement or up your intake of vitamin-D rich foods such as oily fish and eggs. Good sources of calcium include dairy products, sardines and tofu.
