Jenna Bush Hager will join Hoda Kotb as the permanent co-host of TODAY’s fourth hour later this year.

The announcement comes less than three months after Kathie Lee Gifford revealed she will step down as Hoda’s partner for the fourth hour in April.

“It feels humbling and I can’t believe it,” Jenna said on the show Tuesday morning.

She shared with Hoda and Kathie Lee what her father, former President George W. Bush, told her after learning the news.

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

“My dad just wrote me three words, which made me weep. He said, ‘Very proud dad,’” Jenna said, her voice cracking, before she joked, “Which I’m like, what is there to be proud about? I’m just drinking wine in the morning!”

Jenna then offered kind words to Kathie Lee: “You have been such a role model and so generous with your time. … You are beloved here in so many ways and if I can use some of your grace and have a half of what you’ve done, my life will be a very happy one.”

Kathie Lee returned the favor, telling Jenna, “You keep trusting your instincts and you’re going to sit next to the best person in the whole world because she has your back, because she has your heart. It’s going to be fun. You guys are going to have a ball.”

Jenna joined the TODAY family in 2009 and has worn many hats since. She’s interviewed big names from Joanna Gaines to former first lady Michelle Obama; introduced us to many inspirational people through her reporting; and moved us with her touching (and sometimes hilarious) stories about her family, from her late Gampy and Ganny to her little girls, Mila and Poppy.

In an email to staffers, NBC News chief Noah Oppenheim wrote that Jenna’s “compassion and curiosity come through in all of her stories, along with her Texas-sized sense of humor.” Oppenheim also noted that “while it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to Kathie Lee, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to make some changes at 10 a.m.”

Kathie Lee informed viewers in December of her decision to retire from TODAY around the time of her 11th anniversary with the show. She said that while she was thrilled to dive into all of her upcoming projects, “it’s also hard” to step away.

“I’ve been in this business 120 years and never worked with a more beautiful group of people who just give, give, give every day,” Kathie Lee said.

Kathie Lee Gifford announces she’s leaving TODAY

Dec. 11, 201805:50

Sheinelle Jones, who began co-anchoring Weekend Today in 2014, announced Saturday it would be her last day on the program.

Jones has been working six days a week as co-anchor of the Saturday editions and as co-host on the 3rd Hour of Today.

This morning the newscaster got emotional as she told viewers she would be stepping away from the weekend show to spend more time with her family.

“As much as I love my Saturday Today family, this is going to be my last day anchoring the show,” she said. “Since I’m so busy on the weekdays, I thought, you know what, I should probably see those three children that I have at home. They’re 7-year-old twins and a 10-year-old — Kayin, Clara and Uche — every time I look up, I feel like they look like they’re a little bit older so I’m going to be home with them on Saturday mornings.”

Jones was previously an anchor at the Fox affiliate in Philadelphia and joined NBC News in 2014. She began co-hosting the 3rd Hour of Today with Dylan Dreyer, Craig Melvin and Al Roker in January, following the cancellation of Megyn Kelly Today.

Just before Jones made her announcement this morning, Dreyer also shared a bit of news. She said she would be temporarily stepping away from the weekend show after today’s broadcast, to go on maternity leave.

“I have to call it quits at some point. I can’t just keep going,” she said, adding that she’s due to give birth to a baby boy in two weeks.

  • This week, journalist Maria Shriver joined Hoda Kotb on the fourth hour of Today while Jenna Bush Hager is on maternity leave.
  • On Friday, Hoda posted an Instagram thanking Maria for being a guest co-host on Hoda & Jenna.
  • Lots of Today fans commented on the post, saying Maria “needs her own spot” on the show.

On Tuesday, Today anchor Hoda Kotb officially returned to the show after being out on maternity leave following the adoption of her second daughter, Hope Catherine. But because her usual Hoda & Jenna co-host, Jenna Bush Hager, is out on her own maternity leave, Hoda was instead joined during the fourth hour by fellow Today anchor Natalie Morales and journalist Maria Shriver.

In an Instagram post on Friday, Hoda shared a gallery of photos from her first week back at work, including a photo of her sharing a special moment with her guest co-host Maria. She included a heartfelt caption with the pictures, thanking Maria and Natalie for “well … everything.”

The special bond between Hoda and Maria has been clear from the Today anchor’s first day back on the show, when she told Maria that she was the “one person” who she wanted to fill in for Jenna.

That sentiment — and the palpable connection between the two co-hosts throughout the week — clearly struck a chord with viewers, who came out in droves to comment on Hoda’s post about how much they loved seeing Maria on Today’s fourth hour. “Maria needs her own spot there! Love the chemistry you two have!” one commenter wrote. “You and Maria have wonderful chemistry! She’d be a fabulous long-term addition to your hour,” another added. “She needs to join you and Jenna or have her own show,” wrote a third.

Whether Today will bring in other guest co-hosts or Maria will continue co-hosting the fourth hour while Jenna is on maternity leave remains to be seen. Jenna gave birth to her third baby, Henry Harold “Hal” Hager, on August 2.

Maria Shriver is once again co-hosting Today with Hoda & Jenna this week as Jenna Bush Hager remains on maternity leave, and fans are speaking out about the undeniable chemistry between Shriver and Hoda Kotb.

On Tuesday, Shriver joined Kotb on Today to discuss meaningful friendships, and the Today with Hoda & Jenna Instagram account shared a photo of the two laughing during their set. The comments poured in from fans, many saying that Shriver deserves her own seat on the show alongside Kotb.

“Love these lovely, intelligent, fun ladies! They are sooo good together! More Maria Shriver please!!🎉🎊,” wrote one fan, while another commented, “Maria should have a permanent seat there! It just works so well, and it looks so effortless for these two ladies!”

“@mariashriver, you’re the best! While I have enjoyed most of the cohosts and certainly enjoy Jenna, I look forward to the days and weeks where you are cohosting most. You lead by example and your optimism is contagious. The life of service you have led is inspiring,” another person added.

But while some people were gushing over Shriver, others were begging Bush Hager to return to the show. “I like Maria Shriver but not constantly” one person wrote. Others flooded the comments with one simple question: “When is Jenna coming back???”

Bush Hager, who gave birth to Henry Harold “Hal” Hager in August, has been on maternity leave for two months, enjoying time with her family and attending baseball games—and she hasn’t commented on when she’ll return to the show. In addition to Shriver, Andy Cohen, Natalie Morales, and Meredith Vieira have stepped in to co-host alongside Kotb.

Kotb, who was also on maternity leave over the summer after welcoming her second daughter Hope Catherine via adoption, returned to Today in September, with Shriver and Natalie Morales as her guest co-hosts. She shared a cute Instagram pic of her return.

“Loved my first week back at 10 with @mariashriver and @nmoralesnbc Thank you for …. well… everything ❤️,” the caption read.

One genius fan thought of a solution: “Maybe I needs 3 seats. Hoda, Maria and Jenna. Your audience will learn valuable lessons from Maria. She speaks so intelligently with profound words that resonates with us all.” We’ll have to wait and see if Today is up for it.

It’s never too late to find yourself—just look at Maria Shriver. The Just Who Will You Be? author cohosted the fourth hour of the TODAY show on Wednesday, Oct. 2, with her daughter Katherine Schwarzenegger Pratt and Hoda Kotb, during which she opened up about coming into her own at age 63. Turns out, she’s still figuring out who she will be.

“I think this is going to be the year that Maria Shriver…,” Kotb started to say until Shriver interrupted. “Finds herself,” Shriver offered, laughing. Kotb corrected her, clarifying that she meant “finds someone else,” like a love interest.

While Shriver didn’t appear to catch her cohost’s prediction about her love life, she admitted that she believes this could be the year she finds herself. “She’s finally gonna find herself. Finally come into her own,” she said of herself.

“That’s the thing about women my age. We’re finding ourselves,” she said. “We’re in unscripted territory. We’re making it up.”

Her daughter chimed in, praising her mom’s efforts. “But look at how good of a job you’re doing. Killing it.”

Whether Shriver finds a man like Kotb’s prediction, or not—it’s not like she needs one to succeed—Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ex is looking better than ever these days. “She’s never looked better. It’s like truly incredible,” Katherine said of her mom. “#SensualShriver right here.”

Chris Pratt’s wife is responsible for her mom’s sexier appearance. Shriver recalled, “ was the one who said to me before I came, ‘You’ve got to fix your act.’ She said, ‘You’ve got to get rid of your TV hair. That’s so ‘80s and ’90s…Just make it a little bit wilder.’” Katherine added, “I just think that she should embrace her sexy.”

Later in the show, Shriver spoke about the importance of learning patience. For those who are struggling with finding their purpose in life, or who feel like they are in a dark chapter, the former First Lady of California advised them to be patient. “You will find your voice. You will find your way, and you will also be surprised about how you find your voice,” she said.

The journalist, who filed for divorce from Schwarzenegger in 2011 after she learned about his affair with their housekeeper, pointed out that everybody has dark chapters.

“Nobody is immune from stuff happening. Nobody gets out with a free ride,” Shriver said. “So understand that there will be light after darkness and you have everything you have within you to get through it and come out.”

Maria Shriver isn’t the only Hollywood star coming into her own. Jennifer Aniston, 50, says she’s about to “really bloom.”

Katherine Schwarzenegger has nothing but fond memories of her childhood!

The 29-year-old daughter of Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger visited her mom on Wednesday’s Today show, where Shriver was talking to Hoda Kotb and Natalie Morales about motherhood.

“My parenting, one of the things I wish I had done is kept it a little simpler, a little slower, a little quieter,” Shriver admitted.

But when the camera cut to Katherine, she disagreed with her mom’s sentiments.

“It was so simple,” she said of her childhood. “It was the most magical, fun childhood ever. She did an incredible job.”

Katherine also got a chance to show off her cute new bob haircut, which her proud mom highlighted on the show. For the impromptu appearance, she rocked some tailored denim overalls.

“LOVE visiting my mama at work before a jam packed day in the big ?,” Katherine captioned a sweet behind-the-scenes pic with her famous mom.
