Today show halloween 2018

Happy Halloween from the TODAY family — and from the 1980s!

Yes, this year we’re celebrating one of our favorite holidays by flashing back to one of our favorite decades, complete with costumes inspired by the best movies and music of the time.

So put down your Rubik’s Cube, kick off your jelly shoes and check out how we got our totally tubular party started.

A float ushered in the on-air fun — as well as the first iconic character — Wednesday morning. Behold Willie Geist as the title star from the 1986 blockbuster comedy “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.”

After Willie shook things up with some “Twist and Shout” action, it was time to move forward by going “Back to the Future” with Al Roker and Dylan Dreyer.

Dylan took on the part of Marty McFly from the 1985 hit flick that launched a fan-favorite franchise. As for Al, he was the DeLorean-loving Doc Brown.

“The way I see it, if you’re going to build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style,” he said.

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

And that flashy time machine made it easy to hop to 1988 for a look at Craig Melvin’s own throwback tribute.

For Craig’s first Halloween ever on the plaza, he played the part of Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem from “Coming to America.”

But that wasn’t the last of the big-screen memories.

Jenna Bush Hager and Peter Alexander showed up decked out as a couple of hotdogging naval fighter pilots from 1986’s “Top Gun,” joined by TODAY executive producer Libby Leist.

After they sang a couple of bars of “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin,'” just like Maverick and Goose did back in the day, it seemed like the perfect time to roll out the music-makers, starting with the Material Girl herself, Kathie Lee Gifford.

Carson Daly followed up Kathie Lee’s Madonna moment with an impressive makeover that left us asking, “Who’s the Boss?”

And he had the answer.

Carson’s Bruce Springsteen rocked it, of course.

As for his follow-up act, Sheinelle Jones kept things rollin’ as legendary singer Tina Turner.

And the ’80s hit-makers just kept hitting the plaza, including the fun-loving Cyndi Lauper, played to perfection by our very own Savannah Guthrie.

How do you follow up an act like that? Like this:

With Hoda Kotb channeling the ultimate headliner — Elton John!

The singer-songwriter never looked better.

But if you thought The Rocket Man was the finale for our Halloween bash, then just wait until you get a load of man’s best friend.

That’s right, even Sunny — our puppy with a purpose — got in on the way-back act.

He wasn’t even around in the ’80s, but that didn’t stop Sunny joining in on the fun with his very own Cher impersonation.

Kathie Lee and Hoda delivered another performance for the fourth hour of TODAY — featuring special guest (and ’80s icon) Debbie Gibson!

From Fresh Prince to Footloose — See the Today Show Hosts’ Dance-Themed Halloween Costumes

The hosts of Today have dominated Halloween once again.

On Thursday, the anchors of the NBC morning show pulled out all the stops to celebrate the spooky holiday with their dance-themed epic costumes.

Al Roker and Craig Melvin went as The Fresh Prince of Bel Air‘s Carlton and Will, respectively, Hoda Kotb as Tony from Saturday Night Fever, Dylan Dreyer as Seinfeld‘s Elaine, Savannah Guthrie as Sandy and Carson Daly as Danny from Grease, Sheinelle Jones as Janet Jackson, and Peter Alexander as Kevin Bacon’s character in Footloose.

Jenna Bush Hager, who is on maternity leave, even stopped by, dressed as Baby from beloved romantic comedy Dirty Dancing — with help from Willie Geist as Johnny. She is set to return to her regular hosting duties in December.

Some of the hosts later got special messages from the stars they portrayed, including Jackson, Olivia Newton John, who portrayed Grease‘s Sandy, and Alfonso Ribeiro, the original Carlton.

Last Halloween, the Today hosts channeled the 1980s with their epic costumes — as did the hosts of ABC’s Good Morning America.

Geist went as Ferris Bueller, Roker and Dreyer pulled up in a DeLorean as Doc and Marty McFly from Back to the Future, Melvin appeared as Eddie Murphy’s Prince Akeem from Coming to America, and Alexander and Hager played Maverick, aka Tom Cruise, and Goose, aka Anthony Edwards, from Top Gun.

Daly showed up as Bruce Springsteen, Jones as a sequin-wearing Tina Turner, Guthrie as Cyndi Lauper, and Kotb as a piano-playing Elton John.

After making their debut, the anchors hit the stage for a performance of the classic Wham! hit “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.”

Halloween is always an epic affair at the ‘Today’ Show, and that was no different in 2018. This year, the hosts killed it in 80s-themed ensembles, and we’re obsessed!

The hosts of the Today Show never fail to go all-out when it comes to Halloween! During the live Oct. 31 show this year, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, Hoda Kotb, Kathie Lee Gifford and Carson Daly hit Rockefeller Plaza in what might just be their best Halloween looks yet — they all dressed as memorable stars and characters from the 80s! Interestingly, the hosts of Good Morning America also donned 80s garb this year, so the competition between the two was higher than ever.

To kick off Today, Willie Geist channeled Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, followed by Al and Dylan Dreyer in epic Back to the Future looks! Meanwhile, Craig Melvin went as Prince Akeem from Coming to America, and Peter Alexander and Jenna Bush Hager dressed as Top Gun’s Maverick and Goose! The hosts also dressed as some of the most iconic singers from the 80s era — Kathie Lee was Madonna, Carson was Bruce Springsteen, Sheinelle Jone was Tina Turner, Savannah was Cyndi Lauper and Hoda epically portrayed Elton John!

The Today Show has been rocked by some pretty crazy controversy lately, as it’s been just over a week since the show’s 9:00 a.m. anchor, Megyn Kelly, said she felt blackface was “okay as long as you were dressing up as a character.” Of course, she was slammed for the statement, and apologized the next day. However, on Oct. 26, the network announced that Megyn’s hour of the Today Show was cancelled, effective immediately. Plus, it’s been nearly a year since Matt Lauer was terminated from the Today Show amidst sexual misconduct allegations.

We 💜 the ’80s! #HalloweenTODAY 🎃

But the hosts who still do work at the network made sure this was not the focus during their epic Halloween episode, and they proved their creativeness is still on-point, just like in past years. For Halloween 2017, the hosts dressed as famous country singers, like Blake Shelton, Willie Nelson and Dolly Parton. Meanwhile, in 2016, they transported us back to the 90s by dressing as iconic stars from that era, like Jerry Seinfeld, Demi Moore, Regis Philbin and more.

It’s still unclear what will happen during the 9:00 hour of Today as time moves forward, but that was clearly far from everyone’s mind during the Halloween celebrations. How will they EVER beat this amazing costume!?
