The good doctor episode

  • The Good Doctor season 3 will premiere on Monday, September 23 at 10 p.m.
  • The first trailer for season 3 shows Dr. Shaun Murphy on a date.
  • This season of the ABC drama will focus heavily on his love life and personal development.

The Good Doctor, ABC’s leading medical drama, will be back for its third season this fall.

The show stars Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism and savant-syndrome who left behind his rural life in Washington to join the staff at the prestigious St. Bonaventure Hospital in San Jose, California. Shaun’s inability to connect with his patients and coworkers on a personal level sometimes leads to struggles on the job—but he continues to prove that his unusual ways of thinking make him an indispensable member of the surgical team.

As the series enters its third installment and viewers have gotten to know the characters on a deeper level, more intimate drama—from Dr. Glassman’s cancer diagnosis to Dr. Meléndez’s love life—has been weaved into the plot. Still, the show has stuck to its core theme of exhibiting the professional and personal evolution of Shaun. Season 3 will bring major changes for his character as the show explores new developments in his love life (which means the addition of a new cast member as well!).

Shaun’s potential new girlfriend won’t be the only unfamiliar face in the halls of St. Bonaventure. Following Lisa Edelstein’s appearance as Dr. Marina Blaize, another House star will appear on the show—as a patient.

From cast changes to the premiere date, here’s everything you need to know before watching season 3.

When is “The Good Doctor” coming back for season 3?

Jack Rowand

ABC recently confirmed that The Good Doctor will return to its Monday night time slot on September 23 at 10 p.m. ET.

Is there a trailer?

Yes! ABC released an extended trailer for the third season of the series and it hints at big changes for Shaun’s dating life.

Among the clips is footage of the young doctor on a date. Later on, we see Dr. Glassman telling Shaun to give love a chance—followed by a scene where his potential new girlfriend tells Shaun’s friend and coworker Claire to “butt out” of their relationship. Will he be forced to choose between love and friendship?!

Who will be in the cast of season 3?

The network has not revealed any major cast changes for season 3, aside from the addition of two new actors. Former House star Robert Sean Leonard is joining the medical drama, giving viewers the chance to see him as a patient.

Universal Television

According to TV Line, the actor will guest-star in the third episode of season 3 as Shamus O’Malley, an “avid sports fisherman” who is rushed to the hospital following a fishing accident. The episode will focus on Claire, as the third-year resident “faces complications at home and at work as she prepares to lead her first surgery,” leaving the rest of Dr. Meléndez’s team treat Shamus’s unusual injuries. Robert is the second House alum to join The Good Doctor, following Lisa Edelstein’s season-long appearance as Glassman’s oncologist in season 2.

David Bukach

Another actress has been signed on as a series regular to build upon a storyline focused on Shaun’s personal life. Jasika Nicole, a previously recurring guest star who plays Dr. Carly Lever, will appear throughout season 3 as Shaun’s primary love interest.

David Bukach

It’s likely that the rest of the cast, including Freddie Highmore, Paige Spara, Nicholas Gonzalez, Antonia Thomas, Richard Schiff, Hill Harper, Tamlyn Tomita, and the other actors who play the staff of St. Bonaventure Hospital will be returning. Daniel Dae Kim, the show’s executive producer who stepped out from behind the camera for the first time in season 2, will also continue to make appearances.

What network is “The Good Doctor” on?

The Good Doctor—which was originally rejected by CBS—airs on ABC.

Where is “The Good Doctor” filmed?

The Good Doctor is primarily filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia. Ahead of season 2, actress Tamlyn told that producers created “a new set” for the show’s hospital that “ABC and Sony really invested in” to give fans a quality viewing experience.

ABC medical drama The Good Doctor has wrapped up on its second season after becoming an instant TV hit.

The show, which follows Shaun Murphy (Freddie Highmore), a young autistic surgeon with savant syndrome working at the San Jose St Bonaventure Hospital, became the most-watched drama on network TV just a month after it landed, beating the likes of This Is Us and NCIS to come out on top.

The first half of its debut season pulled in roughly 17 million viewers for each episode in the US. And season two also shaped up nicely, which is amazing when you consider that it was rejected twice before being given the green light.

So with that in mind, here’s everything we know about season three so far.

The Good Doctor season 3 air date: When’s it coming back?

ABC has now confirmed that The Good Doctor will officially return on Monday, September 23 in the US.

And that means that those of us in the UK, who can watch the show on Sky Witness, are likely to get it around a month after.

The Good Doctor season 3 trailer: When can we see it?

Now that season three has been confirmed, the first trailer has dropped, asking the question “Will Shaun Find Love?”

The Good Doctor season 3 plot: What will happen?

The season two finale hinted that love would be in the air at the San Jose St Bonaventure Hospital in season three and the first trailer absolutely confirms this.

Title cards ask the question: “Mondays this fall… will Shaun find love?” and a big focus in the new footage is Shaun’s date with Carly.

In what we’ve seen so far, it looks like the date starts off rocky, but then it’s hinted that the pair will overcome this tension and maybe even lean in for a kiss.

Of course, everyone at the hospital is just as keen as us to find out what happened, as seen when Dr Alex Park (Will Yun Lee) asks about the date in front of the other staff.

The Good Doctor season 3 cast: Who’s coming back?

ABC/Eike Schrote

The drama isn’t afraid to cut popular names from the fold. Chuku Modu, who played Dr Jared Kalu, didn’t return for season two after his character received an offer from a hospital in Colorado.

And Beau Garrett, who played hospital attorney Jessica Preston, also moved on to pastures new, so there’s every chance that more fan favourites could be absent from the next chapter.

It seems likely that Dr Jackson Han will no longer remain a recurring character too given that he was removed from his position as chief of surgery in the last episode of season two. However, showrunner David Shore hinted to Entertainment Weekly that actor Daniel Dae Kim could still appear again in the future:

“I liked the character and had fun with it, and I thought Daniel did a great job. The arc that we were dealing with is now complete, but that doesn’t mean the character can’t come back, and I very much would be open to this.”

But one character that the show couldn’t live without is its star, the good doctor himself Shaun Murphy, played by Freddie Highmore of Bates Motel and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory fame.

ABC/Jeff Weddell

We could also see returns for the rest of the main cast, which includes Antonia Thomas as surgical resident Dr Claire Browne, Nicholas Gonzalez as attending surgeon Dr Neil Melendez, Hill Harper as Dr Marcus Andrews, a hospital board member and head of the surgical department, Tamlyn Tomita as Allegra Aoki, hospital chairman and vice president, and Richard Schiff as Dr Aaron Glassman, Shaun’s surrogate father, as well as a surgeon and former hospital president.

Will Yun Lee and Fiona Gubelmann, who play surgical residents Alex Park and Morgan Reznick, were promoted to series regulars in season two along with Christina Chang as Dr Audrey Lim, and Paige Spara as Lea, Shaun’s love interest and neighbour.

But like we said, anything could change.

Despite Glassman finding out that his supposedly inoperable brain cancer was actually a low-grade glioma that could be treated, creator David Shore warned fans that he is not entirely in the clear.

“This is a show about medicine, and we have guest stars come in and get sick and get better and whatever,” he told IndieWire. “How do our people deal with that? How is Dr Glassman going to deal with his illness going forward?

“How is Dr Murphy going to deal with a sick mentor? What is that going to do to their relationship? What challenges is that going to present? I want to fully explore that.”

So it’s safe to say that we’re not feeling 100% about Glassman’s chances.

Like many American shows, The Good Doctor is actually filmed primarily in Vancouver, British Columbia because it’s more cost effective.

The Good Doctor airs on ABC in the US and on Sky Witness in the UK.

The Good Doctor is hanging up its stethoscope until 2020, following the airing of its midseason finale on December 2. The release date for Season 3, Episode 11 is in January, meaning that fans have a few more weeks before they get to see the further adventures of Dr. Shaun Murphy (played by Freddie Highmore) and the rest of the gang at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital.

In the last two seasons of The Good Doctor, the show has taken a break of five or six weeks between episodes 10 and 11. Season 1, for example, saw the show return on January 8, while Season 2 returned on January 14.

Season 3 of The Good Doctor will follow Season 2 and take a six-week hiatus, with the show coming back on January 13 on ABC, in its usual time slot at 10 p.m. ET / 9 p.m CT.

The show will return following an emotional episode for Shaun. After the closing moments of Episode 9 saw Shaun learn that his estranged father is dying from cancer, Episode 10 sees him visiting his parent, in one of the most emotional episodes the series has ever produced.

The midseason finale of The Good Doctor also saw Shaun’s parents recast, with Battlestar Galactica’s Michael Trucco playing his father Ethan and Kingdom’s Joanna Going as his mother Katherine. Previously, the pair were portrayed by Kirby Morrow and Rebecca Husain.

Showrunner David Shore, speaking to TVLine, said of the episode: “From the beginning, we have talked about Shaun’s relationship with his parents. He has certainly cut them off, none of us can truly cut ourselves off from the past. The past is part of us, and that’s what we wanted to explore here.”

Freddie Highmore will be back as Shaun Murphy in “The Good Doctor” Season 3, Episode 11 in January 2020 ABC

From what we have seen of Shaun’s relationship with his parents in the past, we know it was far from a happy one. In the first episode, for example, we saw that Ethan killed Shaun’s pet rabbit. We also know from the show’s past that at one point Shaun and his brother ran away from home to escape their father.

When the show returns, fans are expecting Dr. Browne’s (Antonia Thomas) mental health to start to get better, after she hit rock bottom in the midseason finale. In another TVLine interview, Shore said, “From her point of view, this is rock bottom, and she hopes that she is able to turn things around now. She has certainly made a decision that she wants to. How effective she is at that, we’ll see in the next few episodes.”

The Good Doctor Season 3 returns in January 2020.

The Good Doctor season 3 episode 14 return date, story of ‘Influence’

  • If you find yourself interested in learning The Good Doctor season 3 episode 14 return date, we’ve got that within! Not only that, but we have some more details on what lies ahead in “Influence,” an installment that could be stuffed with all sorts of unexpected drama.

Here’s the bad news, though — you’re going to be waiting for a good while still to see more of what’s coming up next. There is no new episode next week; instead, you’ll have a good chance to watch this when you get around to February 10. This is an episode that could challenge Shaun in a few different ways. For starters, there are some issues when it comes to what happens with Shaun’s patient, a social-media influencer. Being with high-profile patients is not something that Shaun is used to doing, and it’s going to lead to him becoming in the public eye for some of their followers. How will he handle that.

Meanwhile, is there about to be another toll taken on his relationship with Shaun and Carly? We have a feeling that everything involving Lea will come to the surface.

Below, CarterMatt has the full The Good Doctor season 3 episode 14 synopsis with more news as to what’s coming:

After Dr. Shaun Murphy treats a patient who is a social influencer, he deals with unwanted attention. Meanwhile, the team treats a woman who is in abdominal distress after an at-home fecal transplant; and Dr. Carly Lever’s efforts to separate Shaun from Lea are challenged.

This is going to be an episode that could eventually push Shaun towards making a very difficult decision — what does he want most in his life? It’s understandable for Carly to have some concerns, especially since Shaun had some feelings for Lea in the past. Communication is going to be key between Shaun and Carly … but then also Shaun and Lea. We can already sense that the internet is going to have a wide range of different opinions all about this.

The Good Doctor has officially begun its winter break. So let’s take a look and answer the question when is The Good Doctor coming back in 2020?

It’s time to close the door on another year (not season) of The Good Doctor. Emotions have once again been up and down this season as we have watched Dr. Shawn Murphy and co progress in the series that has become our #1 Monday night binge.

Unfortunately, our Mondays are going to become a bit The Good Doctor-less as the series has officially gone on its winter break following the most recent episode “Friends and Family.” So, how many Monday nights have we got until the series is back? Well, you be please to hear that it really isn’t that much.

We’ve all gotten lucky. Unlike some shows that are taking an extended winter break (as in they won’t be back until sometime in either late February or early March 2020), The Good Doctor is scheduled to come back early in the year. Shortly after the winter finale aired, The Good Doctor tweeted the return date via its official social media account. The series will be back on Monday, Jan. 13, 2020, in its usual time slot of 10/9c.

That’s just over a month away everyone, which is much sooner than ABC’s other medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, meaning you just have enough time to get all of your emotions back under control before the show tears them apart again. And with the Christmas holidays around the corner and New Year straight after that. It won’t even feel like you are waiting or the series to return.

It will be back before you know it. And there’s even a trailer for The Good Doctor‘s winter premiere.

So, what did you think of the winter finale? Are you happy to hear the series is not going on break for very long? Drop a comment just below sharing your thoughts.

The Good Doctor returns on Monday, Jan. 13, 2020 at 10/9c on ABC.

The aftermath of Shaun and Lea’s physical embrace will be explored in The Good Doctor‘s winter premiere — and TVLine has your exclusive first look.

The medical drama’s Jan. 13 episode (ABC, 10/9c) picks up after Shaun’s trip to Wyoming, during which he achieved a level of intimacy with his roommate that he has yet to achieve with his girlfriend Carly. That realization is not entirely lost on him, but he “struggles to process the full implications” of what it means for his relationship moving forward, according to the official logline. “He will ultimately do what it takes to make it up to Carly” — but will it be enough?

The photos seen here suggest that Shaun has his work cut out for him. Upon his return to California, Carly “will struggle” with not being asked to accompany her boyfriend when he went to confront his parents — especially in the wake of Shaun and Carly’s own intimacy issues. “She will question him about why that choice was made,” and she will “deal with her own emotions about that choice,” executive producer David Shore previously told TVLine.

Do you think Shaun and Carly’s relationship can survive what happened in Wyoming? Take a gander above and below, then hit the comments with your thoughts.

    Telly’s Take

Will ABC cancel or renew The Good Doctor for season three? I am concerned about the ratings but, unless they totally tank, I think The Good Doctor will be renewed. ABC needs new drama series and this one seems ripe to replace How to Get Away with Murder as their low-rated, quality program. For now, I believe it will be renewed. I’ll keep an eye on the ratings and update this page with breaking developments. Subscribe for free alerts on The Good Doctor cancellation or renewal news.
