Tarek el moussa weight loss

Shortly after Flip or Flop’s second season premiered in 2013, Tarek El Moussa was diagnosed with not one type of cancer, but both thyroid and testicular cancer. Now, six years later, the house-flipping TV star is officially cancer free.

“I remember the production company calling me and telling me they understand if I can’t move forward,” Tarek shared on Instagram. Though he had to undergo two surgeries and underwent radioactive iodine treatment that left him routinely nauseous—not to mention his head pounding from migraines just about every day—he persevered.

“I told myself no matter what, you can’t quit!” he wrote.

Tarek wrote that he teared up while writing the post, as he thought of his two children, Brayden and Taylor. “They are my everything, and they need their daddy! This news is so good because I’m alive to be here for THEM,” he explained.

Rewinding to just before season 2, the HGTV star originally went in for tests because a nurse, who was a an of the show, wrote in to producers stating she believed a lump she saw on Tarek’s throat was thyroid cancer. She turned out to be his hero—she was right. After searching his medical records for anything else that may be irregular, he and his then-wife Christina noticed other irregularities. Soon after, Tarek was scheduled for surgeries and radioactive iodine therapy to beat both forms of cancer.

“From the bottom of my heart, I love all of you,” Tarek ended his emotional Instagram post. “I read all your comments and feel like I know so many of you. You have followed me so long I’d probably recognize you on the street. I’m saying this because I appreciate you and all of your support…thank you again from the bottom of my heart ❤️”

Tarek El Moussa likely expected fan feedback as a star of the HGTV reality series “Flip or Flop,” but he never could have predicted one of its 4 million viewers would make a potentially life-saving recommendation.

Viewer spots thyroid cancer symptom on HGTV host

Nov. 27, 201504:47

During a 2013 marathon of the TV show — which chronicles the renovation and attempted sales of houses secured by Tarek and his wife, fellow real-estate agent Christina — registered nurse Ryan Reade spotted a lump on Tarek’s neck and contacted the show’s producers to suggest he get it checked out.

“I noticed that at certain angles, at certain times, it just caught my eye that Tarek had a lump on his throat,” Reade told TODAY, “and I thought it was something that needed to be brought to his attention.”

It did. Joining Christina in thanking Reade, Tarek called Reade’s notification a “lightbulb moment,” as he’d been having throat problems for three years. A heavy smoker, Tarek had dismissed the lump as just a fatty mass, and so had his doctors prior to Reade’s note.

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

“We seriously looked at each other and we’re like, ‘OK, it’s not something might be wrong; something is wrong,'” Tarek said.

Biopsy results revealed the lump and smoker’s cough were symptoms of Stage-2 thyroid cancer.

” interesting thing about thyroid cancer is it most often shows up as just a lump in the neck,” Dr. Michael Yeh, a UCLA associate professor of surgery, told TODAY. “Oftentimes, blood work will be normal; the patient will feel fine. The average person, by the time we get to them, probably had the cancer for a couple years.”

Although Tarek said he told his wife “we’re going to beat this thing,” Christina recalled being fearful, especially since they’d just had a baby, Taylor.

“I was just feeling totally overwhelmed about losing him, him having to go through treatments, our daughter,” Christina said.

Within a month of the biopsy, Tarek had his thyroid and lymph nodes removed and began iodine radiation treatment, sapping his energy and resulting in migraines, but he and Christina continued to work.

“We made a decision not to slow down, not to stop,” he said. “We’re gonna run the business. We’re gonna fight through this cancer, ’cause the second you slow down is the second it gets scary and you start getting depressed.”

For the past year and a half, Tarek has been in remission. He and Christina are basking in parenthood, bonding with Taylor, who celebrated her fifth birthday this year, and — after two failed in-vitro attempts — raising Brayden, who turned 3 months old last week.

Welcoming Brayden to the world was “a turning point in our life,” Tarek said. Although they’ve continued to host “Flip or Flop,” whose new season premieres Dec. 3, Tarek has since scaled back on work days that often spanned 14 hours.

Christina has noticed the change. “After we found about cancer, him and my daughter got closer than they’ve ever been,” she said.

Added Tarek, “It’s like the best thing in the world.”

Concerned Viewer Alerts HGTV Host To A Lump On His Neck

“Flip or Flop” is a popular home improvement show on HGTV, hosted by 32-year-old Tarek El Moussa and his wife, Christina.

Fans love Tarek, but never did he expect one of them would help save his life.

Earlier this year, a woman named Ryan was watching a marathon day of season one when she noticed a lump on Tarek’s neck. Ryan, 31, is a registered nurse who found the lump extremely disconcerting. Instead of attempting to write to Tarek (to avoid coming across as a “crazy” fan) she searched online until she found his production company’s email address. She wrote to the team behind “Flip or Flop” and advised them to encourage Tarek to see a doctor immediately.

Tarek heeded Ryan’s advice, and it was perfect timing. He realized he’d been having a harder time swallowing lately, and that the lump was getting bigger. After going to the same doctor twice, he decided to get a second opinion. A biopsy then revealed the devastating truth.

Read on to see Tarek’s shocking diagnosis…

  • 2013: Tarek El Moussa was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, which became a Flip or Flop storyline, and testicular cancer, which he kept a secret.
  • 2014: The HGTV host suffered a debilitating back injury, for which he took “large amounts of pain meds” and eventually had surgery.
  • 2016: Tarek and then-wife Christina El Moussa separated.
  • 2017: The star went public with his testicular cancer after his stepfather was diagnosed with the same disease.
  • 2018: Tarek’s cancer is in remission. He re-injured his back but is recovering quickly thanks to stem cell therapy.

The last five years haven’t exactly been easy for Tarek El Moussa. There was his 2016 split from wife and Flip or Flop co-star Christina El Moussa, of course, but Tarek has also been battling two forms of cancer and two debilitating back injuries.

“I wasn’t healthy for years,” Tarek tells CountryLiving.com. “I had my cancer, and I was filming. Then my second cancer and I was filming. And then I hurt my back and I was filming, and then I had surgery and I was filming.”

So when the show’s newest season premieres May 31, it will not only mark the El Moussas’ first as exes, but also the return of a mostly healthy Tarek.

In fact, fans might be surprised by how different the star looks. “I had 60-pound weight swings in previous seasons between my cancer and my back injury and it was just awful,” he explains. “It was years of absolute hell. … If you watch the show, it’s visible. One season I’m 230 pounds and I have thyroid cancer and the next season I’m 168 pounds and can barely walk. I’m on all these pain medications just so I can get up and shoot the show. I was pale, my eyes are black—it’s plain as day that I was sick.”

But now, Tarek tells us he’s feeling better than ever. To fully appreciate the TV personality’s progress, we’re looking back at the amazing story behind his cancer diagnosis and remarkable recovery.

Tarek El Moussa’s Thyroid Cancer Diagnosis

Back in 2013, Ryan Read, a registered nurse in Texas, was watching reruns of Flip or Flop when something caught her eye. No, it wasn’t the transformations of homes by husband-and-wife duo Tarek and Christina El Moussa, but rather a concerning lump on Tarek’s neck.

So, she wrote the production company and suggested Tarek go see a doctor. In an interview with People, Christina recalled the message:

“This is not a joke. I’m a registered nurse. I’ve been watching Flip or Flop. I noticed that the host Tarek has a large nodule on his thyroid, and he needs to have it checked out.”

Tarek was aware of the lump, but he had already had it examined and was told it was fine. Upon receiving Read’s note, though, the host got a second opinion—and found out she was right. A biopsy confirmed the lump was cancerous, and doctors removed Tarek’s thyroid.

Rough couple of years.. Today I Went in for another cancer screening and it was all clear! I remember the day we took this photo.

A post shared by Tarek El Moussa (@therealtarekelmoussa) on Nov 23, 2016 at 8:42pm PST

The star received radioactive iodine therapy for the disease, which had spread to his lymph nodes. During the treatment, he had to be isolated from his wife and the couple’s young daughter, Taylor, which Tarek described as a “nightmare.”

But the painful experience did give him some perspective. “I’ve always been very work, work, work,” he said. “So, I stepped back and re-evaluated what I wanted, like spending time with my family and all that good stuff.”

Tarek El Moussa’s Secret Battle With Testicular Cancer

Shortly after his initial diagnosis, Tarek discovered he had another form of the disease: testicular cancer. Though the thyroid cancer became a storyline on the HGTV show, the host kept his second diagnosis quiet.

“Testicular cancer is more of a private thing,” he said in an interview with People in 2017, when he finally revealed his secret struggle. Tarek decided to open up in order to raise awareness about the disease after his stepfather was diagnosed as well. Tarek told the publication:

“His is worse through because he waited longer. He knew there was something wrong when he told my mom years ago, but he never went to the doctor. His cancer has spread to his lymph nodes and now he has to do chemotherapy … A lot of people said they got tested because I shared my story. I thought this was the time to come forward because it could save some lives.”

Tarek El Moussa’s Back Injury

While Tarek was being treated for cancer, he and Christina were also struggling to get pregnant via in vitro fertilization. After miscarrying in 2014, Christina found out she was pregnant again, but she had to be incredibly careful and couldn’t even lift little Taylor. Unfortunately, around the same time, Tarek threw out his back playing golf, landing both parents on bedrest.

Following the debilitating injury, Tarek said on Instagram:

“I lost 50 pounds and was taking large amounts of pain meds to try and help the pain. Truthfully those meds really affected my mental and physical state and changed who I was.”

The El Moussas’ son, Brayden, was born in August 2015, about a year before they split. And although it took a year and a half and surgery, Tarek finally recovered from his back injury.

“The last 3 years were the hardest of my life,” Tarek captioned an Instagram photo he posted to show “how absolutely sick I was.”

“I look back and still wonder how I survived… I never quit although I wanted to thousands of times all day every day. … For everyone struggling right now from any situation.. remember… keep your head up and don’t quit! There is light at the end of the tunnel, stay strong!”

Tarek took those words to heart, training hard and building back muscle. As of last year, he said he was in “the best shape of my life.”

Tarek El Moussa Cancer and Health Update

Sadly, Tarek re-injured his back again in spring 2018, but thanks to stem cell therapy, he’s recovering much faster this time around.

As for his cancer, Tarek tells us all is well. “I’m in remission, and everything’s looking good,” he says.

He’s looking forward to the new season of Flip or Flop; he was healthy for most of the new episodes, except for some scenes captured after the second back injury.

Oh, and as he tells us, he’s in a much better place now.

“Did affect my marriage ending?” he says. “Absolutely. Of course. It was a very hard time. It was years. But I can say today that I’m feeling the best I’ve ever felt. After going through something so traumatic with the divorce, you go into such pain that once you get through that pain, there’s really nothing that can take you down because you don’t have that feeling of misery anymore.”

Cancer is a grim, familiar presence to the “Flip or Flop” family. Tarek El Moussa was diagnosed with thyroid cancer after a registered nurse emailed the show’s production company in 2013 to suggest that Moussa get a medical checkup for a large nodule on his thyroid, according to The Independent.

The reality star revealed earlier this year that, a month after being told he had thyroid cancer,he was also diagnosed with testicular cancer.

Flip or Flop is a popular show on HGTV where Tarek and Christina El Moussa buy rundown houses and fix them and flip them for a nice profit. The fan noticed the lump on Tarek’s neck.

He told INSIDE EDITION: “I remember getting this email and it was life changing… ‘This is not a joke. I’m a registered nurse. I’ve been watching Flip Or Flop. I noticed that the host Tarek has a large nodule on his thyroid, and he needs to have it checked out.’”

It turned out to be a cancerous tumor that spread to his lymph nodes. Tarek underwent surgery followed by radiation therapy.

Fortunately, thanks to that viewer his thyroid cancer was caught in the nick of time and is now in remission.

She told INSIDE EDITION: “It feels really good knowing that he was able to get a correct diagnosis (and) get treatment – treatment that was successful and he has been able to go on with his life.”

Tarek and Christina, who recently had their second child, say they will forever be grateful that Ryan was watching their show so closely.

“She saved his life and I can’t express how I feel about that,” Christina said.

The photo he posted shows him wearing shades and looking gaunt. El Moussa, 36, a real estate professional and an HGTV star, doesn’t make it clear when the photo was taken, and in recent pictures, he looks to be back at his normal weight.

“After beating cancer twice I had a horrific back injury. Over the course of 10 months I lost 50 pounds from all the pain meds which prevented me from wanting to eat and I was nauseous all the time,” he wrote.

The photo shows him at 169 pounds, the 6-foot, 2-inch reality star added.

“My clothing didn’t fit and it looks like I’m wearing drapes!” he wrote.

El Moussa ended his post on a positive note.

“This photo is a reminder anything is possible with hope,” he said. “While I went through this it was the first time in my life I wanted to quit! Thank god I didn’t…or I wouldn’t be standing tall today!! Reminder everyone, anything is possible! You just have to believe!”

Last December he and his wife, Christina El Moussa, who also stars on “Flip of Flop,” announced they were separating after seven years of marriage.
