Swan float for pool

Ever since Taylor Swift rode a swan pool float into our hearts during the summer of 2015, inflatables have popped up in practically every shape imaginable, from pizza to peacocks to pretzels. But so far, they’ve only managed to fit one or two people at a time—until now.

Just in time for spring break, Sam’s Club released a series of three absolutely enormous pool floats in the shape of a unicorn, a flamingo, and a peacock that can hold up to six adults at a time.

These “personal animal islands”—as they’re called on Sam’s Club’s website—don’t come cheap. While the regular size pool floats will set you back about $20 to $30, each one of these mega-floats retails for $149.98 at Sam’s Club stores and on their website.

But, look! Both the unicorn and flamingo floats come with built-in cup holders and a cooler so you can really make yourself at home out there on the water.

Sam’s Club

Stretching about 10 feet long by 10 feet wide, these big birds are a little too large to fit in most pools — so you’re best saving them for your next lake house vacation or trip to the beach.

Their massive size will also require some extra time to inflate them. One person wrote in their online review that it took about 20 minutes to inflate one with a single handheld air pump.

While the peacock float doesn’t have the built-in cup holders and cooler, the tail serves as a lounger that can fit up to three people at a time. According to the description online, “no day on the lake is complete without resting by the gentle tail feathers of a towering inflatable peacock.”

Exactly.

While not native to the Hamptons, they can certainly be found there—sunning themselves in the swimming pools of New York’s wealthiest denizens and posing for selfies with the rich and Instagram-famous. Flightless, featherless, and completely rideable, they may not be the spitting image of their real-world counterparts, but with increasing demand from retailers and sunbathers, inflatable swans are the summer’s hottest pool accessory.

The inflatable swan—swan float if you’re fancy—first appeared on the swim scene in 2006 (between 5 million and 23 million years after its brethren of the cygnus genus). A byproduct of intelligent design rather than natural selection, the pool toy was first dreamed up by Edgewood, New York-based Swimline, which manufactures pool floats and toys.

“We had made a giant duck, because a pool is basically a giant bathtub,” says Swimline national sales manager Kieran Glackin. The company wanted to “class it up,” Glackin says, “while still remaining fun. Hence, the swan.”

Swimline has already sold about 300,000 of its $40 swans so far this fiscal year, up from 80,000 last year. On Amazon, the company’s “International Leisure Giant Swan,” priced at $39.99, is currently the sixth-best seller in the patio, lawn and garden category. According to data from Sellics, a tool for Amazon sellers, that means Amazon is selling roughly 94 swan floats per day.

Inflatable-swan sales are also up at BigMouth Inc., a Glastonbury, Connecticut-based company that sells a $30 version. Sales there have increased by 350% since 2012, when the company began producing the swan as an offshoot of its signature inflatable donut.

At Swimline, which also makes inflatable parrots, unicorns, flamingoes, and various food products, Glackin says swan sales started climbing noticeably around 2014, after an end-of-summer Wall Street Journal article about the toy’ popularity with the Hamptons set.

“It took time, and the help of lounging celebrities, but the Original Giant Swan is pretty much a must-have in America,” he says.

Emphasis on lounging celebrities. While inflatable swans now make their homes across the country, their true natural habitat is social media. Kourtney Kardashian and Kendall Jenner both hit Instagram on a giant swan in 2014. A year later, Taylor Swift posted a picture of herself and then-boyfriend Calvin Harris astride a swan, with the caption, “swan goals.” The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills use them at parties. Kaley Cuoco has one. Rihanna fell off one last month. Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook are littered with posts tagged #giantswan, #swanfloat, and #inflatableswan.

Says BigMouth CEO Steve Wampold: “The social media-savvy market simply demanded a funner inflatable for the summer season.”

To get in and out of the raft, there’s an inflatable step-up platform on the back of the raft. Meanwhile, sunbathers can enjoy the open, elevated portion towards the front. The float also has five heavy-duty handles attached to the sides for easy transport.

The boat-shaped raft is available on Amazon for $319.99. Although an air pump is not included, you can buy one on Amazon here.

As if we couldn’t find yet another reason to love all things ‘summer’ these ginormous rafts are pretty much breaking the internet. We don’t even think you can technically call them ‘rafts.” They’re technically ‘floats’ but, truth be told, they’re more like inflatable party boats perfect for any lake (and not really any regular sized pool).

Last year these insane monstrosities continuously sold out and people were paying top dollar on eBay because that was pretty much the only place you could find them! However, we have some great news. There are brand new party float for the summer of 2020 that have just been released right now and, so far, they’re still in stock!

Here’s what we know, so far, about these famous Party Bird Island floats:

  1. There are currently 6 super cute animals to choose from: The new Sunny Swan with Crown, the Hot Pink Flamingo, the Bay Breeze Boat Island, the Tropical Tahiti Floating Island, the Magical Unicorn, and the Beautiful Peacock.
  2. These ‘floating islands’ can hold up to 6 of your family members or friends and max out at a 1,320 pound capacity.
  3. They come with six cup holders (hello beers!) and have a useful built-in platform where you can add some water to keep your feet nice and cool in the summer heat.
  4. There’s a super useful built-in cooler in the flamingo and the peacock version (sorry unicorn fans!).
  5. They’re about 10 feet tall, 10 feet wide, and 14 feet long (depending on which you choose)
  6. The suggested retail price starts at $169.00
  7. They’re almost impossible to find in stock at Sam’s Club (some you can pre-order) so you can always roll the dice on eBay if you’re desperate (and, to be honest, we are).

So somehow these island floats have turned into a ‘must-have Christmas toy’ scenario we’ve all experienced with Hatchimals and Fingerlings Monkeys last year. We can never have a break. Everyone online is freaking out! But, seriously, how magical and awesome are these inflatables?! Can you imagine the fun you’ll have with your friends all day in the summer? The only real bummer (besides how hard they are to find online) is that it’ll take you around 25 minutes to blow them up so make sure you have an electric pump on standby and then make sure you get your friends to help you carry it down to the water. Did we mention it’s 10 feet tall, by 10 feet wide and 14 feet long. Amazing! Of course the dimensions might slightly vary by animal, but you get the drift.
