Lore

In World of Warcraft, Coldwraiths are skeletal mages found in Acherus: The Ebon Hold.

From Wowpedia:

Coldwraiths were once part of the scourge. Following the Battle for Light’s Hope Chapel they now serve the Knights of the Ebon Blade and act as guards for Ebon Hold. During Amal’thazad’s teachings a Disciple of Frost will engage a Coldwraith in combat.

However, Hearthstone’s Coldwraiths appear to be distinctly different, as they are apparently created by Sindragosa from the corpses of frozen adventurers in her lair in Icecrown Citadel.

This article is about the Stark motto, for the premiere episodes of the series see “Winter Is Coming”.

Lord Eddard Stark.

“Winter is coming.” ―Ned Stark

“Winter Is Coming” is the motto of House Stark, one of the Great Houses of Westeros. The meaning behind these words is one of warning and constant vigilance. The Starks, being the lords of the North, strive to always be prepared for the coming of winter, which hits their lands the hardest. The inevitable truth of the words are mentioned by other characters, such as Maester Aemon, who occasionally note that sooner or later, the Starks are always right. This was proven in The Winds of Winter, when autumn is ended with the coming of a white raven. Jon Snow remarks that his father, Eddard Stark, was bound to be right eventually.

A second meaning is that the Starks themselves are Winter, poetically, and that this is supposed to be an intimidating motto for the enemies of House Stark. This was invoked by Arya Stark after killing the members of House Frey who participated in the Red Wedding, instructing the women she spared to tell people that “Winter came for House Frey.”

A third meaning, one that is long forgotten even by the Starks themselves, is that the White Walkers may return in the winter, and that the realm must always be prepared for such an event.

Behind the scenes

A deeper, metaphorical sense can also be found in the motto. According to George R.R. Martin, it more generally expresses the sentiment that there are always dark periods in each of our lives, and even if things are good now (“summer”), we must always be ready for a dark period when events turn against us (“winter”). In this sense “winter” parallels Richard of the House of York’s opening line in Shakespeare’s Richard III, “Now is the Winter of our Discontent / Made glorious Summer by this sun of York…”

In this sense it is loosely matched by the Latin phrase “memento mori” (“remember you have to die”), which was whispered into the ear of victorious Roman generals during their parade of triumph, to remind them that all earthly success is fleeting.

The phrase has transcended the dialogue of the show itself and is one of, if not the, defining quotes of the series in popular culture, along with “Valar Morghulis”. It’s frequently used on Game of Thrones merchandise, is often mentioned in reference to the show on social medias, and has found its way into the scripts of many modern-day TV programs and films. Recently, with winter arriving in the show, its prevalence has partially been replaced by “Winter is Here”, though this phrase hasn’t been uttered on the show with frequency.

Dev Update #3 – Winter is here, and it’s cold!

Hello dear readers!

December’s here, and that means we have yet another batch of amazing stuff to share with you. Take a chair, grab a cup of coffee (or hot chocolate) and let us tell you of the newest developments in Solasta.

Important Note: As a reminder, everything you’re about to see is Work In Progress! That means some of it may look clunky, janky, broken, empty, ugly – and even if it does look “okay” or pretty good, it’s not final (so it will look even better in the final game)! Also the design is not final, so things may work differently once the game goes live.

Art Direction – Research

What do you show new players when they enter the Character Creation screen? Sometimes, seemingly simple questions like these bring up quite a lot of discussions. Do we go for simplicity with a static, cool-looking concept art of the party? Wait… how would that work since the player is supposed to create his four characters from scratch? Who do we show on screen in that case?

Research on a dynamic Character Creation landing screen (sketch), which would display the 3D models of the characters you create.

While we’re still early in development and everything can be subject to change, our Art Director proposed we go with a dynamic landing screen. By default, you would get four pre-generated characters on screen – and clicking on one would take you to the Character Creation screen where you can switch them with your very own creation, changing the Character Creation screen accordingly every time you swap party members.

Speaking of Character Creation, our Concept Artist has started working on a wide variety of haircuts, beards and moustaches! Note that haircuts and facial hair can be chosen separately, they are not linked together.

Picking up adventuring comes with a complementary trim at the nearest barber shop.

Monsters & Enemies

We’ve talked a lot about adventurers and their ilk, but what about the true citizens of Solasta? Those who are shunned by the more “advanced” societies just because they happen to enjoy a little bit of violence and murder. Discrimination, that’s what. Of course, it would be hard to have a good High Fantasy setting without the classics. Orcs… and Goblins! You’ve already met your friendly orc neighbours in the Ruins of Telema (and perhaps even enjoyed a fair few rounds of fisticuffs, they do so enjoy physical activities), so prepare to greet our Goblins!

Beautiful. Now that’s a face that’d make any seasoned adventurer swoon.

Now that their 3D models are done, our lead animator Grégoire (who was the guest of our previous article on Animation) is going to spend a good chunk of time bringing them to life! Walking, running, attacking, dying… There’s plenty to be done.

Little known fact: Goblins can actually fly by wiggling their ears very hard. Not.

Aside from Goblins, our Concept Artist has also worked on bringing some wildlife to the world of Solasta. Behold the wolf!

Who’s a good boy? Who’s a good pupper! Yes you are!

Environment & Levels

Our Art Team wasn’t the only one hard at work, as our Design Team has been working on some new levels that you’ll get to enjoy. We don’t want to spoil too much by giving away location names or showing too much of the level itself, but here are a few gifs to enjoy.

I mean… it does look like a nice spot to take a nap. I’d do the same.

Watching your neighbors over the fence as they are doing a barbecue and didn’t invite you.

Orc Totems Concept Art

New Features

One of the much-needed features that we couldn’t implement in time for the Kickstarter Demo was a functional 3D Map of the level so that players wouldn’t get lost in the level. We haven’t forgotten about it, and we are now testing a new version that’s already working much better than the previous one. Note that it still looks very rough for now, and we plan to remove some elements to improve its readability.

You’ll be able to move the map around, zoom in and maybe even fast travel from there.

We’ve also created a tool that adjusts the water level of the ground to add muddy pools and make humid caverns look more realistic! Hopefully those are tools that will be available for the community once the Modding SDK is made public.

Ughhhhh… Soggy socks, that’s the worst.

Animations & Special Effects

We’re now reaching the end of today’s update, which was packed with a lot more visuals than usual! I picked a few spells and animations from our FX artist and lead animator for the finale – we like to leave the best for last.

Rapier attack animation, minus the rapier since we still need to make it.

Barkskin Spell Animation

Hold Person Spell Animation

That’s it for today! Among what you’ve seen today, what made you the most excited? Please do drop a little comment below as we always enjoy reading your messages 🙂

50 Fall Quotes to Celebrate the Beauty of the Season

Copyright George W Johnson/Getty Images

From pumpkin-spiced-everything to hayrides and haunted houses, there is so much to love about the fall. Autumn represents change– the changing of the leaves, the start of a new school year, and maybe even the beginning of a few new resolutions. But somehow this season of change feels oh-so-familiar. Autumn represents the start of the holiday season, packed full of our nostalgic memories and traditions. And the annual shedding of the trees’ leaves holds the everlasting promise of new blooms to come.

In Persuasion, Jane Austen describes autumn as “that season which has drawn from every poet worthy of being read some attempt at description, or some lines of feeling.” Throughout the years, romantics, modernists, and transcendentalists alike have basked in the glory of autumn, attempting to capture the spirit of the season on paper. Like a painter’s rendering of an autumn landscape bursting with orange-gold leaves, a writer’s words help pinpoint the feelings that the season stirs in us. Here are some of our favorite fall quotes to remind of this season’s particular beauty.

Beautiful Fall Quotes

“Is not this a true autumn day? Just the still melancholy that I love – that makes life and nature harmonise.” – George Eliot

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” – L. M. Montgomery

“The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.” – John Muir

“It looked like the world was covered in a cobbler crust of brown sugar and cinnamon.” – Sarah Addison Allen

“The leaves as they spark into wild color just before they die are the world’s oldest performance art, and everything we see is celebrating one last violently hued hurrah before the black and white silence of winter.” – Shauna Niequist

“Spring passes and one remembers one’s innocence. Summer passes and one remembers one’s exuberance. Autumn passes and one remembers one’s reverence. Winter passes and one remembers one’s perseverance.” – Yoko Ono

The reddening October trees,
That hardly sway before a breeze
As soft as summer: summer’s loss
Seems little, dear! on days like these.” – Ernest Dowson

“I like spring, but it is too young. I like summer, but it is too proud. So I like best of all autumn, because its leaves are a little yellow, its tone mellower, its colours richer, and it is tinged a little with sorrow and a premonition of death. Its golden richness speaks not of the innocence of spring, nor of the power of summer, but of the mellowness and kindly wisdom of approaching age.” – Lin Yutang

“Use what you have, use what the world gives you. Use the first day of fall: bright flame before winter’s deadness; harvest; orange, gold, amber; cool nights and the smell of fire.” – Shauna Niequist

“When you fall in love with a work of art, you’d die to meet the artist. I am a student of the galleries of Pacific sunsets, full moon rises on the ocean, the clouds from an airplane, autumn forests in Raleigh, first fallen snows. And I’m dying to meet the artist.” – Yasmin Mogahed

“Autumn is the mellower season, and what we lose in flowers we more than gain in fruits.” – Samuel Butler

The biggest problem with Winter is that it’s always yanking our chain. “Welp, I’m out of here,” says Winter one late February day. “I won’t see you again until after autumn.” But Winter is a dirty, rotten liar. After leading us to believe that it’s finally gone for good, it roars back into our lives on a hurricane of icy whiteness. Winter is the sleazy pal who you let crash on your couch for “just one night.” Now he won’t leave despite such broad hints as you slapping a For Sale sign on the couch and dragging it out to the curb.

From travelling the vast white landscapes of Skyrim, to the long mournful melodies of Tchaikovsky’s 1st symphony, it is obvious that winter has inspired creativity from within. Even without ever experiencing it for myself, everything from lines in Game of Thrones like “Winter is coming” to quests to end the eternal winter in Frozen have made it clear that winter is a time of difficulty, hibernation, and sorrow. It might be something we take for granted but for aeons we have known that winter is a time of survival, a relentless force of nature that pushes us to keep ourselves alive and reminds our species of its fragility. Something about the cold instills melancholiness, fear, and a sense of insignificance which I understood even without ever living in a place where it can get unbearably cold. My fascination stems from an attempt to put a face to the artistic persona of winter that we have all encountered in varying forms.

Winter then in its early and clear stages, was a purifying engine that ran unhindered over city and country, alerting the stars to sparkle violently and shower their silver light into the arms of bare upreaching trees. It was a mad and beautiful thing that scoured raw the souls of animals and man.

The winter is like a withered heart, whose life has been spent in the bright sunshine of summer, but is now left unprotected; no music gladdens the grove, nor verdure clothes the plain; the trees are divested of their leaves, and the bowels of nature seem bound up or dead.

Oh winter, the season of cold temperatures and snow-covered ground for many areas. This season of winter is a beautiful one, but admittedly a bit colder. It’s a fun season to enjoy skiing with family and then curl up in front of a wood fire late at night to stay warm. Today I’m sharing 25 quotes and sayings about winter to inspire you to find love of this beautiful season.

Here are 25 Wonderful Quotes and Sayings About Winter

1. “Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.” ― Edith Sitwell
