Is Meghan Markle Embarrassed by Her Family?

Meghan Markle’s relationship with her father and siblings is incredibly strained and appears to be getting more strained by the day. Thomas Markle Sr. hasn’t spoken to his daughter since the eve of her wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018. He’s never met the prince and hasn’t laid eyes on his grandson, either. Regardless of the rift, the elder Markle hasn’t stopped talking to the press, nor have Markle’s siblings, Thomas Markle Jr., and Samantha Markle. With Markle and Prince Harry’s decision to step back from royal life making headlines, everyone is wondering what went so terribly wrong in the Markle family, and whether or not Markle is embarrassed by her family members’ desperate attempts to garner the spotlight.

Meghan Markle once had lovely things to say about her father

Back in 2017, Markle sat down with Vanity Fair to discuss her upbringing. She noted that her parents, while they divorced when she was young, always seemed to work together in her best interest. She said that they vacationed together, spent time together, and even enjoyed Sunday meals together. She’s spoken about growing up on the set of the television shows that her father worked on, and from the sounds of it, the father-daughter duo enjoyed a close relationship.

The elder Markle has been pretty open about his relationship with this daughter. He noted that she told him when she met Prince Harry, and they discussed him fairly regularly until the engagement. The elder Markle even spoke to Prince Harry after he popped the question, according to The Evening Standard. The elder Markle and Prince Harry, however, never got a chance to meet one another. Things turned sour shortly before the pair were set to walk down the aisle.

When did their relationship deteriorate

Things appeared to go downhill quickly for the father-daughter duo. The catalyst of the rift that now exists seems to be rooted in the elder Markle’s decision to skip the royal wedding after photos taken in the beachfront Mexican town he resides in were revealed to be staged. The elder Markle and the paparazzi attempted to pass them off as candid shots. It seems the elder Markle was paid for the photos.

He claims he hasn’t spoken to his daughter since the eve of her wedding to the prince, but he has been talking to the press, regardless of the warning he claims he was given by the prince about speaking with the media. Markle’s fans see her father as nothing more than money-hungry, believing that he’s been chasing paychecks from media outlets ever since the news of Markle’s engagement broke. Opponents of the Duchess of Sussex see the elder Markle as a confused father, desperate to reconnect with his daughter.

Regardless of which side of the fence you fall on, it’s clear to say that a serious wedge has been placed between the father and daughter. It does seem, however, that the duchess’ much older siblings have played a hand in the problem, and it’s possible that Markle is thoroughly embarrassed by them.

Is Meghan Markle embarrassed by her family?

While the relationship between Markle and her father is certainly not healthy at the moment, she’s never outright claimed to be embarrassed by him. In fact, everything she’s said about him leading up to the familial rift was positive. The real thorn in the side of the duchess seems to be her older half-siblings. Markle’s much older sister, Samantha Markle, has been incredibly outspoken about her distaste for her younger sister. The Markle sisters haven’t had contact in more than a decade. In fact, the last time the pair were in the same room together was 2008, long before Markle landed her breakout role on Suits. Samantha Markle was left off of the guestlist for both of her sister’s weddings.

Markle’s brother, Thomas Markle Jr., has been a problem, too. He’s penned several open letters to his younger sister and appears to be taking advantage of her celebrity every chance he gets. According to Us Weekly, Markle Jr. even appeared in a beer ad that mocked the younger Markle. Still, he claims he’d like to reunite with this sister.

Has this all been embarrassing for the younger Markle? She’s never said, but one can assume that having your family’s dysfunction aired to the world can’t be a comfortable feeling. Both half-siblings have also said some pretty horrible things about the youngest member of the Markle clan. Whether they’ll ever reunite is unknown, but frankly, it seems unlikely.

Another Thomas Markle interview, another criticism of his famous daughter.

The estranged father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, had harsh words for her decision to step back from her royal duties with husband Prince Harry, calling it “ridiculous” and saying she’s throwing away the royal life “for money.”

Markle, 75, did an interview with Britain’s Channel 5 in which he also said that Harry and Meghan “owe” him and that their decision to separate from the British royal family has tarnished the crown.

“She actually got every girl’s dream,” Markle said. “Every young girl wanted to become a princess, and she got that, and now she’s tossing that away for — it looks like she’s tossing it away for money. … Apparently $3 million and a 26-bedroom home isn’t enough for them.”

Channel 5 told NBC News that Markle was paid to participate in “Thomas Markle: My Story.”

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

“We mention within the program that he has been paid as part of the editorial and have been transparent about this,” the channel said in a statement. “We never reveal how much we pay contributors.”

As Harry and Meghan try to avoid the cameras as they start their new life in Canada, Thomas Markle was unsparing in his criticism.

“They’re turning into a Walmart with a crown on it now,” he said. “It’s something that’s ridiculous. They shouldn’t be doing this.”

Markle, who did not attend his daughter’s wedding in 2018, also opened up about the staged paparazzi photos that got him in hot water with Meghan and contributed to his absence at the wedding. He was asked if he is still making money off the photos.

“Absolutely,” he said. “Those pictures will sell forever.”

He also had a heart attack ahead of the wedding, announcing after the controversy with the photos that he was recovering from heart surgery in California and couldn’t walk his daughter down the aisle.

“They owe me,” Markle said in the documentary. “The royals owe me, Harry owes me, Meghan owes me. What I’ve been through I should be rewarded for.

Prince Harry breaks his silence about stepping back from royal duties

“My daughter told me when I reach my senior years, she’ll take care of me. I’m in my senior years now. I’m 75 years old, so it’s time to look after daddy.”

The Channel 5 interview is the latest salvo in an ongoing back-and-forth between Markle and his daughter. Markle has lamented in previous interviews that his relationship with her is broken while also defiantly saying that he “won’t be silenced.”

Meghan filed a lawsuit in October against London’s Mail on Sunday and its parent company, Associated Newspapers, accusing the tabloid of unlawfully publishing an emotional letter from herto her father.

Court papers filed by the Mail on Sunday indicate the company may call Markle as a key witness in their defense.

He has admitted that his relationship with Meghan and Harry is most likely irreparably broken.

“The last time they might see me is being lowered into the ground,” he said. “I don’t think at this point they’re thrilled to see me or want to talk to me.”

Meanwhile, Harry’s father, Prince Charles, had no comment on his son and daughter-in-law’s decision to step back from the royal family while giving a speech on climate change in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday. He did not address any of the issues facing the royal family, instead greeting teen climate activist Greta Thunberg before leaving.

Meghan Markle’s estranged father Thomas Markle has accused her and Prince Harry of turning the royal family into “a Walmart with a crown on it” as they prepare to venture outside of the monarchy and take on new job opportunities.

Thomas Markle made the comments in a new documentary, Thomas Markle: My Story, that aired Wednesday night on the U.K.’s Channel 5.

He said: “This is one of the greatest long-living institutions ever. They’re destroying it. They’re keeping it… they’re making it shabby. They’re turning it into a Walmart with a crown on it now. It’s something that’s ridiculous. They shouldn’t be doing this.”

Meghan and Harry and have agreed to step down as senior members of the royal family in a bid to live a more private life. The couple say they will become financially independent, with experts linking them to multi-million dollar deals similar to the Obamas’ deal with Netflix.

Thomas Markle was interviewed at his home in Mexico for the Channel 5 documentary following the news earlier this month that Harry and Meghan were planning to leave their senior royal roles and split their time between North America and the U.K.

The Duchess of Sussex’s father said: “Every young girl wants to become a princess and she got that and now she’s tossing that away … it looks like she’s tossing that away for money.

“Apparently three million dollars and a 26-bedroom home isn’t enough for them. It’s kind of embarrassing to me.”

Thomas Markle added: “I miss Meghan. I miss who she was, I don’t know who she is now. That’s the problem.”

Meghan’s father made headlines in 2018 ahead of her wedding to Harry when he admitted staging paparazzi photographs for money.

Thomas Markle was expected to attend to attend the wedding and give Meghan away but ultimately missed the nuptials, claiming he was recovering from heart surgery.

In February 2019, the U.K.’s Mail on Sunday newspaper published excerpts of a letter Meghan wrote to her father in the months after her wedding, prompting the Sussexes to sue the tabloid and its publisher Associated Newspapers for misuse of private information, copyright infringement and a breach of the U.K.’s Data Protection Act.

In a legal filing with the high court in London earlier this month, the Mail on Sunday defended publishing parts of the letter, saying there is “huge and legitimate public interest” in the personal lives of the royal family.

According to the BBC, Sky News and The Guardian, the newspaper’s defense appears to rely heavily on evidence from Thomas Markle, prompting speculation he could testify against Meghan and Harry if the lawsuit reaches trial.

In the run-up to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s royal wedding, Meghan’s extended family soon found themselves in the spotlight. There were countless tabloid headlines about which of the bride-to-be’s relatives were invited to the wedding, who would walk Meghan down the aisle, and more.

In the year-and-change since then, the dust has settled, and a lot has happened. Perhaps most significantly, Meghan’s started a new family of her own. Here’s what you should know about the Duchess’s relatives, old and new.

Meghan and Harry’s first child was born on May 6, and met his royal great-grandparents—Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip—soon after. So far, it seems that the youngest royal family member is happy and healthy.

She’s close with her mother, Doria Ragland.

Meghan describes Ragland as the biggest influence on her life. Back when she and Harry were dating, Meghan even took her mom to London to meet her royal boyfriend. And in the fall of 2017, Doria accompanied Meghan at the Invictus Games in Toronto—one of the first times she publicly hung out with the Prince. And of course, she was by Meghan’s side on her wedding day, too.

Harry’s a Doria fan, too. “Her mom’s amazing,” Prince Harry said during that sit-down with the BBC following their engagement announcement.

When Meghan gave birth to baby Archie in May 2019, Doria was there. In a statement released shortly after the royal baby’s birth, the new grandmother shared that she was “overjoyed” about Archie’s arrival. She reportedly stayed with Meghan and Harry for a bit after the birth, too, to help the couple adjust to parenthood.

Back home in the States (the Crenshaw area of Los Angeles, to be exact), Doria teaches yoga, and is a licensed social worker and a jewelry maker. Her marriage to Markle’s father, Thomas Markle, ended when the actress was six years old, after which Meghan lived with her mom but saw her dad regularly.

Meghan’s dad, Thomas Markle, hasn’t been apart of his daughter’s life, as of late.

Meghan’s dad—who apparently staged paparazzi photos before her wedding, though her half-sister would later take the fall for that—ultimately didn’t escort her down the aisle, claiming to be in poor health.

Months later, Thomas Markle would repeatedly tell the media that Meghan had frozen him out. But in a People cover story last February, a close friend of the Duchess said that wasn’t true. “He knows how to get in touch with her,” the source explained. “He’s never called; he’s never texted. It’s super-painful.”

Friends also mentioned a handwritten letter that Meghan had sent her father. Days later, Thomas Markle would hand that letter over to the Daily Mail to publish.

Decades before their public falling out, Meghan and her dad had good times, too. Thomas Markle, was a camera operator on the ’80s sitcom Married With Children, and often brought his daughter—a future actress—along to set. “Every day after school for 10 years, I was on the set of Married … with Children, which is a really funny and perverse place for a little girl in a Catholic school uniform to grow up,” Meghan told Esquire in 2013.

Thomas currently lives in Mexico, and his son (Meghan’s half-brother, Tom) divulged that their father once won the lottery, winning an estimated $750,000. “If Meg marries Harry she’ll have won the lottery of life but dad winning the lottery helped us all,” he told the Daily Mail. “That money allowed Meg to go to the best schools and get the best training. Meg is someone who has always had laser focus. She knows what she wants and she doesn’t stop until she gets it.”

More on Meghan’s father, right here.

Her half-sister, Samantha, is a former model and actress.

Markle’s half sister Samantha Grant says she has barely spoken to Meghan since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2008. Splash News

Samantha Grant, 51, is Markle’s half-sister from her father’s previous marriage—and has offered conflicting comments about her now-royal relative.

Samantha (who now goes by Samantha Markle) has reportedly called Meghan a “social climber,” adding, “Hollywood has changed her. I think her ambition is to become a princess.” Other times, she’ll backtrack. Once on Entertainment Tonight, she said her half sister is “just very beautiful and conservative, very real, very giving.”

She’s writing a book, which was reportedly intended a tell-all with the title The Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister. But later, Samantha would claim that wasn’t the case, even if the book does have an inflammatory working title. “The title is true. What is not true is this unbelievable swell that’s been created that it’s some sort of slamming tell-all,” Samantha said on Good Morning Britain . “More importantly, it has to do with the interracial evolution of this country through the lens of my life in my family since the civil rights act until present, and how that intersects with the recent events with my sister.”

A mother of three and former actress and model based in Florida, Grant said she has also barely spoken to Meghan since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2008.

“They have been made to appear as siblings who had this falling out, and that’s not the truth at all,” a source told People of Meghan’s half-siblings, Samantha and Tom. “They were not a part of her life.”

More on Samantha Grant, here.

Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle, Jr., has also publicly disparaged the Duchess.

Weeks before her wedding, Tom suggested that Prince Harry should call of their nuptials. “As more time passes to your royal wedding, it became very clear that this is the biggest mistake in royal wedding history,” Tom wrote in a letter to Prince Harry, which InTouch shared. “Meghan Markle is obviously not the right woman for you.” He also wrote that she is a “jaded, shallow, conceited woman that will make a joke of you and the royal family heritage.”

Clearly, he is not currently part of Meghan’s life.

During the preparations for Meghan’s wedding, other, more distant relatives have been brought into the spotlight as well.

Meghan Markle’s nephew, Tyler Dooley, who is the son of her half-brother Thomas Markle Jr., appeared on Good Morning Britain to speak about his relative with his mother, Tracy. They shared that they likely won’t be invited to the royal wedding. “I don’t think we are getting invitations, but that is fine, we are so proud of her,” Tracy said. They haven’t been in touch with Meghan in years.

Tracy, Tyler, and Thomas (Tyler’s brother) were once booked to appear on Good Morning Britain’s coverage of the royal wedding, but that never materialized.

Markle has spoken of her pride in her mixed-race heritage and that her ancestors were once slaves.

Markle told Elle that she struggled with her identity, growing up with a black mother and white father: “You create the identity you want for yourself, just as my ancestors did when they were given their freedom.”

In a post for her now-defunct lifestyle site, The Tig, the actress recalled having to tick a box indicating her ethnicity as a teen, and being told to choose either white, black, Hispanic, or Asian.

“You could only choose one, but that would be to choose one parent over the other—and one half of myself over the other,” Markle wrote.

My teacher told me to check the box for Caucasian. ‘Because that’s how you look, Meghan,’ she said. I put down my pen. Not as an act of defiance, but rather a symptom of my confusion. I couldn’t bring myself to do that, to picture the pit-in-her-belly sadness my mother would feel if she were to find out. So, I didn’t tick a box. I left my identity blank—a question mark, an absolute incomplete—much like how I felt.

Markle says she grew to embrace her mixed heritage and is proud to be “a strong, confident mixed-race woman.”

Yes, (Trvor Engelson 2011-13)

Fans of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry think they know everything about the couple, but they may be surprised to learn that Meghan’s name isn’t actually Meghan. More surprisingly, it’s not a stage name either. Meghan is actually the actress’ middle name, and we’re screaming over her first. So what is Meghan’s real name? It’s actually Rachel — and, oddly enough, this was her character’s name on Suits, too!

The 37-year-old was born as Rachel Meghan Markle on August 4, 1981, in LA to her parents, Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland. And while the world may know the bride as Meghan, she actually used the name “Rachel” during the royal wedding ceremony. Why? Because Meghan Markle’s real name is the moniker Queen Elizabeth used in the official letter giving consent to the marriage. She also used Prince Harry’s real name — which, if you haven’t guessed yet, isn’t Harry. And, no, it’s not Harrison, his son’s middle name, either.

Getty Images

“I declare my consent to a contract of matrimony between my most dearly beloved grandson Prince Henry Charles Albert David of Wales and Rachel Meghan Markle,” the queen wrote at the time. “Which consent I am causing to be signified under the great seal and to be entered in the books of the Privy Council.” And what Queen Elizabeth says always goes!

Although it’s unclear why Meghan goes by Meghan and not Rachel, during an interview with Esquire, she made it seem like her parents had actually called her “Meghan” or “Meg” her entire life. With her dad in showbiz — specifically working as the director of photography on the sitcom Married… with Children — the publication asked what it was like growing up on a television set.

“Every day after school for 10 years, I was on the set of Married… with Children, which is a really funny and perverse place for a little girl in a Catholic school uniform to grow up,” she said. “There were a lot of times my dad would say, ‘Meg, why don’t you go and help with the craft services room over there? This is just a little off-color for your 11-year-old eyes.’”

So, Meg it was! Even though fans still don’t have a clear answer as to why her parents didn’t use her real name, there’s more important things to question. Like, what does Prince Harry call her behind closed doors? Meghan or Rachel? And will Prince Harry and Meghan’s son come to be known by a cute little nickname of his own? The new parents named him Archie, likely as an homage to Prince Harry’s mom, Princess Diana, and her ancestor Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll. Archie is already a nickname — but then, Henry and Rachel aren’t exactly a mouthful, either!

In an unearthed interview from 2016, Sophie opened up about how their countryside pad meant that the children could often visit Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip at their Windsor Castle residence.

Activities the royal children often enjoy during their free time is horse riding and having tea with the Queen, Sophie explained.

“We’re a lot more fortunate because we live so much closer to the Queen,” she told Sky News.

“So, when she spends a lot of time at Windsor at weekends, our children are more fortunate because they can go over and have tea with her on a regular basis.

“So we do see quite a lot of her, and we’re over there most weekends riding. So she sees quite a lot of us – lucky her!”

Who is Meghan Markle? Quick profile

Meghan Markle was born Rachel Meghan Markle, on August 4, 1981 to parents Doria Ragland and father Thomas Markle.

Her father was previously married to Roslyn Loveless and Meghan has two elder half sibling – sister Samantha Markle and brother Thomas Markle Junior.

Meghan’s first television appearance in the USA was in an episode of the medical drama General Hospital in 2002.

She later moved on to roles in CSI, Without a Trace and Castle along with bit parts in Hollywood films including Get Him to the Greek, Remember Me and Horrible Bosses.

Meghan was also a “briefcase girl” on Deal or No Deal – but her most famous role was as Rachel Zane in legal drama Suits, which launched in 2011.

She was written out in the finale of the seventh series when her character got married, which aired in April 2018 – just before she got married herself.

Charity and humanitarian work

Meghan Markle’s career in television has gone hand-in-hand with her support for causes close to her heart.

She wrote about the stigma around menstrual health in an article for Time magazine and was a Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada – with whom she travelled to Rwanda for the charity’s Clean Water Campaign.

And her commitment to gender equality has seen her work with the United Nations – receiving a standing ovation in 2015 for her speech to mark International Women’s Day.

In September 2011, she wed film producer Trevor Engelson, who she began dating in 2004.

But the pair divorced two years later in August 2013, citing irreconcilable difference.

She was in a relationship with celebrity chef Cory Vitiello for almost two years, before they broke it off in 2016 but the two remain good friends.

And in June 2016, she met Prince Harry on a blind date set up by a mutual friend.

Their relationship began in October that year and just over one year later, on November 27, 2017, the pair announced their engagement.

They married on May 19, 2018 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

Meghan’s heritage

Some have claimed Meghan Markle is the first mixed-race member of the Royal Family.

Historians are still arguing about Queen Charlotte, the wife of King George III.

But Meghan will be the first royal to openly embrace a mixed-race heritage.

She has written about the difficulties of being a biracial actress in Hollywood as she claims she is not black enough for some roles and not white enough for others.

Who are Meghan Markle’s close friends?

Inside Meghan Markle’s Family Tree

Since she first began dating Prince Harry in 2016 — Duchess Meghan Markle has been the subject of both praise and ridicule. The former actress left behind her life as she knew it — and her hit drama series, Suits to marry into the British Royal Family. It has certainly been a whirlwind.

Though most people view the Duchess of Sussex as a bright and welcoming spot to the traditional (and somewhat stuffy) royal family — some Britons and the British press have not made it easy for Markle to adjust to her new role and level of fame. The duchess’ mix-raced heritage and her advocacy has been a subject of disdain and ridicule

Though Markle has her mother, Doria Ragland, and a close-knit group of friends — that include Serena Williams and Julia Mulroney — her estranged paternal side including her father, Thomas Markle and her half-siblings have been eager to drag the duchess down. Here’s a look at what we know about Markle’s family.

This is how Meghan Markle’s parents met

The Duchess of Sussex is the only child of Doria Ragland, a 63-year-old African-American woman who is a former social worker and yoga instructor and Thomas Markle, a white man who is a former television director of photography and lighting director.

The pair met in the 1980s when they both worked on the set of General Hospital — Ragland was working as a makeup artist. Thomas Markle already had two children from a previous relationship. The pair divorced when the duchess was just six years old.

Meghan Markle’s maternal side

Not much is known about Doria Ragland’s side of the family. Ragland was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Jeanette Arnold and Alvin Azell Ragland. Ragland’s parents divorced when she was young and her father remarried, Ava Burrow, a kindergarten teacher.

Though Burrow’s relationship to Ragland’s father ended in divorce, she remained close to Doria Ragland. Doria’s mother remarried Joseph Johnson and went on to have two children — Joshua Jr and Saundra Johnson. Ragland also has a paternal half-brother, Joffrey Ragland.

Meghan Markle’s paternal side

The duchess’ 75-year-old father, Thomas Markle, was born in Newport, Pennsylvania to Doris May Rita and Gordon Arnold Markle. Prior to marrying Ragland — he wed student and secretary Roslyn Loveless in 1964. The pair had the duchess half-siblings, Samantha and Thomas Markle Jr. before divorcing in 1975.

Markle has never been close to her older siblings and in their frenzy to grab checks by speaking about her in the media — that’s become quite clear. They’ve called the duchess everything from “callous”, a “disgrace” and “shameful.”

Unfortunately, it looks like Markle has had to cut ties with her paternal side forever. Her father published a very person letter that the duchess wrote to him in Daily Mail. It read, “If you love me, as you tell the press you do, please stop,” she wrote. “Please allow us to live our lives in peace. Please stop lying, please stop creating so much pain, please stop exploiting my relationship with my husband. I realize you are so far down this rabbit hole that you feel (or may feel) there’s no way out, but if you take a moment to pause I think you’ll see that being able to live with a clear conscience is more valuable than any payment in the world.”

Meghan Markle made her name as an actress, campaigner and blogger before marrying Prince Harry in May 2018 and becoming the Duchess of Sussex.

Before meeting Harry, she had been best known for playing lawyer Rachel Zane in US TV drama Suits.

Now as a member of the Royal Family, she has given up her acting career. Instead, she has immersed herself in the life of a working royal, using the platform to highlight the charities and causes close to her heart.

Her pregnancy was announced last October.

Early life

Born Rachel Meghan Markle on 4 August 1981, she grew up in a prosperous part of Los Angeles.

Her mother’s home is in an area known as the “Black Beverly Hills”, where the average price of a home is $771,000 (£587,000).

Meghan went to a private primary school in Hollywood and started campaigning for gender equality at an early age.

At 11, she wrote a letter to the then US first lady, Hillary Clinton, lamenting a washing-up liquid’s TV ad strapline: “Women all over America are fighting greasy pots and pans.”

Within a month, manufacturers Procter and Gamble had changed the word “women” to “people”.

“It was at that moment that I realised the magnitude of my actions,” she later said. “I had created my small level of impact by standing up for equality.”

At 15, she was volunteering in soup kitchens as her studies continued at a girls’ Roman Catholic college, and she graduated from Northwestern University School of Communication, near Chicago, in 2003.

A stint working as an intern at the US embassy in Argentina made her think her path might lead her into politics, but she changed course when her acting career began to take off.

Between auditions, she has told of making money by doing calligraphy for wedding invitations, using skills developed in handwriting classes at school.

She also appeared in the sci-fi series Fringe, playing FBI special agent Amy Jessup, but her most famous role was in Suits.

In real life, Meghan’s union with Prince Harry wasn’t her first marriage. In September 2011, she wed film producer Trevor Engelson, but the pair divorced two years later.

In September, it was reported that her ex-husband was producing a new TV show based on a man’s custody battle with his ex-wife who marries into the Royal Family.

In 2014, she began writing about topics such as food, beauty, fashion and travel, as well as her own story, on her lifestyle website The Tig.

Meghan said setting up the website was an attempt to “reframe the beauty content to include think pieces about self-empowerment” and feature dynamic, inspirational women.

In one post, she explained: “I’ve never wanted to be a lady who lunches – I’ve always wanted to be a woman who works.”

The site also carried candid blogs she wrote on every birthday. On turning 33 in 2014, she wrote: “My 20s were brutal – a constant battle with myself, judging my weight, my style, my desire to be as cool/as hip/as smart/as ‘whatever’ as everyone else.”

She also grew a large social network profile, with 1.9 million followers on Instagram and more than 350,000 on Twitter.

But she shut The Tig in April 2017, and deleted her social accounts January 2018.

Her media career has gone hand-in-hand with support for causes that are important to her.

She tackled the issue of the stigma around menstrual health in an article for Time magazine in March 2017 and was a Global Ambassador for World Vision Canada, which campaigns for better education, food and healthcare for children around the world.

As part of her role, the actress travelled to Rwanda for the charity’s Clean Water Campaign.

Meghan’s commitment to gender equality has seen her work with the United Nations, and she received a standing ovation from an audience including UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon for a stirring speech on International Women’s Day 2015.

Commenting on how she combined acting with campaigning, she said: “While my life shifts from refugee camps to red carpets, I choose them both because these worlds can, in fact, co-exist. And for me, they must.”

Meghan, whose father is white and mother is African-American, has also spoken about coming to terms with her racial identity.

In an article for Elle magazine, she wrote: “While my mixed heritage may have created a grey area surrounding my self-identification, keeping me with a foot on both sides of the fence, I have come to embrace that.

“To say who I am, to share where I’m from, to voice my pride in being a strong, confident mixed-race woman.”

Marriage to Prince Harry

In late 2016, Prince Harry confirmed he was in relationship with Meghan – while issuing a statement accusing journalists of harassing her.

The pair had met on a blind date, organised by a mutual friend. After just two dates, they went on holiday together to Botswana.

In September 2017 Meghan told Vanity Fair magazine they were “two people who are really happy and in love”.

And in an interview that November, when their engagement was announced, Prince Harry admitted he had never heard of Meghan before his friend introduced them, and was “beautifully surprised”.

It’s been drama, drama, drama with Meghan Markle’s family since her engagement to Prince Harry was announced.

The former Suits actress grew up in the US with divorced parents and half brothers and sisters and – and this past has followed her since news broke in November 2016 that she was dating Harry.

Some of Meghan’s family members have been more vocal than others *cough* Samantha Markle *cough*, while others have kept a more respectful silence, namely her mother Doria Ragland.

So, with the wedding behind us, who made the cut when the invites were sent out?

Meghan’s mother Doria flew over from the US in time for Meghan’s second hen party.

It was even been rumoured that Meghan could break with convention and have both her father and her mother, Doria, walk her down the aisle on 19 May.

However, Meghan decided to walk part of the way up the aisle herself, and was accompanied by Prince Charles for the second part.

Doria, 61, met Harry at last year’s Invictus Games in Toronto and the Prince previously described her as ‘amazing’.

Tom and Doria, a social worker, divorced when Meghan was six but she is said to ‘adore’ both her parents.

Meghan’s father Thomas Markle

Meghan’s father Thomas Markle – who reportedly lives a reclusive life in Mexico – was also on the invite list.

However, he decided not to attend the ceremony, citing health reasons.

After an awkward moment where it was revealed Thomas was selling photographs to the press, the decision was publicised.

Meghan confirmed that he wouldn’t be attending in a statement on Tuesday.

It’s been said that he did give Prince Charles his blessing to walk his daughter down the aisle, however.

Meghan’s half-sister Samantha Grant

Samantha Grant – although she calls herself Samantha Markle on her Twitter page – was not invited to Meghan and Harry’s wedding.

Since Meghan’s relationship with Prince Harry was revealed, Samantha has taken it upon herself to make damning comments and criticism of Meghan to the press.

However, while she might have received the right royal snub, she is in Windsor for the wedding weekend as a guest of a TV channel.

It’s thought she was in a car crash earlier this week, after a ‘confrontation’ with the paparazzi.

Meghan’s half-brother Thomas Markle Jr. – the son of her father Thomas and her step-mother Roslyn and brother of Samantha Grant – did not receive an invite in the post.

Thomas Jr. has filed for bankruptcy in the past, has been divorced twice and faced trial on gun charges before the case was dropped.

The father-of-two lives in Grants Pass, Oregon, and works as a window fitter.

While it’s understood he does not keep in contact with Meghan, he has shared family photos of her to the press. He also allegedly posted her a letter apologising for any upset he has caused her.

But, according to reports, the so-called letter didn’t stop Meghan leaving him off the wedding guest list.

Meghan’s former sister-in-law Tracy Dooley appeared on Good Morning Britain in which she spoke about not receiving an invite to the royal wedding.

She has not seen Meghan in over 20 years, and is divorced from Thomas Markle Jr.

It was rumoured that she was going to be part of ITV’s coverage for the event despite not attending the wedding, but ITV rebuffed this.

Meghan’s nephew Tyler Dooley

Likewise, Meghan’s nephew who she used to babysit – Tyler Dooley, the son of Thomas Markle Jr. and Tracey Dooley – did receive an invite to Harry and Meghan’s nuptials.

Will Meghan Markle’s Family Cause More Drama When Baby Sussex Is Born?

It is no secret among fans of the royal family that Meghan Markle has been dealing with intense family drama since before her wedding to Prince Harry. It seems that her half-sister, Samantha Markle, as well as her half-brother and father are more than willing to talk to the media every chance they get and make hurtful comments about the Duchess of Sussex and her marriage.

Meghan has been handling the entire situation with grace and dignity, even after it was announced Samantha would be writing a tell-all book about her sister. However, with the arrival of Baby Sussex coming very soon, the question remains as to whether Meghan’s family will cause even more drama after the birth.

What has Meghan Markle’s family done so far?

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Perez Hilton (@theperezhilton) on May 16, 2018 at 6:03pm PDT

Ever since Meghan and Harry announced their engagement, Meghan’s family has been cashing in on any opportunity they possibly can. Samantha Markle has appeared on several talk shows and has constantly been making hurtful comments about her estranged half-sister on social media. She has been known to make outrageous claims about Meghan, and even about Harry, who she has never met. Thomas Markle, Meghan’s father, famously staged paparazzi photos a few days before the royal wedding, bringing negative attention to himself as well as Harry’s family.

Did Markle’s family attend the wedding?

Although Samantha was in London at the time Meghan married Prince Harry, she did not receive an invite to the royal wedding, nor did Meghan’s brother. They both expressed their hurt at the situation, which did not seem to faze Meghan and Harry. They stayed true to what they believed in and did not comment on who they chose to invite or not invite to their nuptials.

Although Thomas Markle was planning to walk his daughter down the aisle, he was forced to cancel at the last minute due to health issues (and after he was caught staging paparazzi photos), leaving Meghan’s mother as the only family member in attendance.

Since Meghan and Harry announced they are expecting their first child, Meghan’s family has been going out of their way to create tension and drama for the expecting parents. The Duchess of Sussex has received letters from her brother, advising her that allowing the baby to have a relationship with her father and siblings is the best thing to do. While Meghan and Harry have not responded to these letters, it is certainly causing some unneeded stress for the couple.

How are they handling the situation?

It appears as if Meghan and Harry are handling the situation simply by keeping quiet. They are not expressing any sadness or anger regarding the behavior of Meghan’s family, nor have they released any statements. Although the Queen has suggested that she feels Meghan should repair her family relationships, the Duchess has not made an effort to do so. Harry is standing by Meghan’s side and supporting the decisions that she has made so far. Looks like the royal couple is doing what they think is best for their baby and not letting anyone influence their actions!

Who will be a part of the baby’s life?

The royal family, including Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Camilla, and Prince William and Kate Middleton are all eagerly anticipating the baby’s arrival! Doria Ragland, Meghan’s mother, is said to be beyond excited for the birth of her first grandchild. Whether or not Meghan reaches out to any of her other family members before or even after the baby is born remains to be seen, and royal fans are sure that she will make the decision that works best for herself and Harry.

Congratulations to Meghan and Harry on their upcoming arrival!

While some of Meghan Markle’s more outspoken family members continue to stir up drama, there’s one relative who has stuck by her side: her mom, Doria Ragland. When Meghan and Prince Harry welcomed their son on Monday, May 6, the new grandma was there to celebrate the arrival.

In an official statement, the royals gave a shout-out to Doria: “The Duchess’s mother, Doria Ragland, who is overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild, is with Their Royal Highnesses at Frogmore Cottage.”

Meghan has gushed about her mom over the years too, so it’s no surprise she wanted her there.

“We can just have so much fun together, and yet, I’ll still find so much solace in her support,” she wrote of their relationship in Glamour in 2017. “That duality coexists the same way it would in a best friend.”

Here’s everything you need to know about Meghan’s number one cheerleader.

Her name is Doria Ragland, not Radlan.

Despite various articles and Google search results using the latter, both Kensington Palace and Meghan Markle herself spell it “Ragland.” It’s unclear where the misspelling initially appeared.

Ms. Markle’s parents, Mr. Thomas Markle and Doria Ragland have wished the couple ‘a lifetime of happiness.’

She’s a social worker living in California.

Ragland recently worked at a nonprofit mental health clinic in Los Angeles, but quit her job before the royal wedding.

“It was Doria’s decision to leave,” a source told Us Weekly. “She has talked about starting her own private practice, focusing on working with elderly patients.”

The 62-year-old received her license — “a lifelong dream” — in 2015 after Markle helped fund her master’s at the University of Southern California, according to Us Weekly. The Ohio native has also worked as a yoga instructor.

TV brought her and Meghan’s dad together.

Ragland and Thomas Markle Sr. met while working on the set of General Hospital in the late ’70s. “My dad was a lighting director for a soap opera and my mom was a temp at the studio,” Meghan wrote in a 2015 essay for Elle. “I like to think he was drawn to her sweet eyes and her Afro, plus their shared love of antiques. Whatever it was, they married and had me.”

They split when Meghan was 6 years old.

After the couple divorced in 1988, their only child lived primarily with her mom. Ragland never remarried or had any other children; Tom Markle already had two kids from a previous marriage, Samantha Grant and Thomas Markle Jr.

She’s a “free spirit.”

Meghan remains extremely close with her mom, as evidenced by posts on her former lifestyle website The Tig. Ragland even has the sweetest nickname for her: “Flower,” Town & Country reports.

The actress wrote about their close bond back in 2014:

Dreadlocks. Nose ring. Yoga instructor. Social worker. Free spirit. Lover of potato chips and lemon tarts. And if the DJ cues Al Green’s soul classic ‘Call Me,’ just forget it. She will swivel her hips into the sweetest little dance you’ve ever seen, swaying her head and snapping her fingers to the beat like she’s been dancing since the womb. And you will smile. You won’t be able to help it. You will look at her and you will feel joy. I’m talking about my mom.

Prince Harry adores her.

The couple revealed in their sit-down interview with BBC that they’d spent a lot of time with Ragland in the lead-up to their engagement. “Her mum’s amazing!” Prince Harry interjected.

One of those meetings occurred in the fall of 2017 at the Invictus Games in Toronto, the sporting competition for veterans that Prince Harry founded. Meghan and her mom attended the closing ceremony and the royal also reportedly used the opportunity to ask permission to propose.

She was involved in the wedding planning.

Meghan reportedly flew halfway around the world to talk deets with her mom in L.A. just weeks before the wedding. She came “equipped with sketches from the wedding and of the wedding dress itself, so she could really give her mom some insight on how the big day will look,” royal contributor Omid Scobie told Good Morning America.

She met with the entire royal family before the wedding.

Ragland flew out to London ahead of the wedding to help with preparations and meet her new in-laws, Kensington Palace confirmed.

“Ms. Doria Ragland will be arriving in the UK in the week of the wedding, allowing time for Prince Harry’s family, including The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, to spend time with before the big day,” the couple’s press secretary revealed in a statement.

Meghan picked an important role for her in the wedding.

Ragland traveled with Meghan by car to Windsor Castle on her big day, but after Meghan’s dad announced he would no longer attend the royal wedding, many speculated whether she would also walk her down the aisle.

Kensington Palace confirmed ahead of time that Prince Charles would do the duty, although the bride reportedly consulted with her mom first. “Doria and Meghan discussed it but she just didn’t feel she could go through with it,” royal journalist Duncan Larcombe told Harper’s Bazaar UK. “According to the guidance I’ve been given, Meghan felt that it would be too much to expect her mother to perform such an important role when more than one billion people are expected to be watching.”

She looked simply gorgeous in green.
