Netflix movies for teens

These Are the Best Young Adult Movies on Netflix

It’s time to talk about a hard truth: bing watching is exhausting. So many series are coming out at rapid intervals and pile up on our DVRs or in our streaming service queues, and it’s too much to take in. Instead of consuming 13 hours of one show, sometimes it’s better to just kick up your feet and watch a 90-minute rom-com that’s going to make you forget about the woes of the world.

Enter Netflix, which has been steadily adding so much of this content over the past year that you’ve probably missed some real gems. That’s what TV Guide is for. The broadcast television schedule has officially hit the summer slew of reality shows and summer specials and some of us have been procrastinating the recommended summer binges by digging into Netflix’s stellar selection of young adult movies — from instant classic rom-coms to heartwarming coming of age stories and even a few stalker thrillers. We’ve narrowed the list down to our top 5 movies that you should put in your queue now, and probably watch a few times when the binge schedule gets too overwhelming.

The Best All-Around: Set It Up (2018)

Glen Powell and Zoey Deutch, Set It UpPhoto: K C Bailey / Netflix

If you’re a millennial with an internet connection then at least one of your friends has told you how great Set It Up is. Believe the hype. Glen Powell and Zoey Deutch have effortless chemistry as two over-worked assistants who decide to team up to Cupid’s chokehold their bosses in the hope that a romantic connection will allow them to have lives of their own, outside of work. The banter is quippy and the movie hits all of the desired rom-com traditions without falling into tropes or predictability. It is fun, funny and smart. We really don’t think it’s hyperbole at all to call it a modern When Harry Met Sally. Do yourself a favor and enjoy this now.

The Best Teen Romance: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)

Noah Centineo and Lana Condor, To All the Boys I’ve Loved BeforePhoto: Netflix

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve had quality teen movies like the classics we enjoyed in the ’90s and early ’00s. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, based on Jenny Han’s endearing young adult novels, is bringing the high school romance comedy back in a huge way. Lana Condor leads the way as Lara Jean, a high school junior who falls into her first real relationship after the letters she wrote to her five previous crushes are sent out. It captures all the awkward pitfalls of high school romance with just enough surrealism to make this a fantastic escape movie.

The Best Coming of Age: Alex Strangelove (2018)

Daniel Doheny, Alex Strangelove

Heads up, stock up on tissues before you watch this one. Alex Strangelove stars relative new comer Daniel Doheny as the adorable Alex Truelove, who only wants to find his person but is struggling inside the dark closet of his sexuality. It’s the Netflix version of Love, Simon and is equally compelling, heartbreaking and good for the soul. Growing up is hard, and whether you are gay or straight or anything in between, Alex Strangelove takes you back to those awkward high school days where it feels like your entire existence depends on you figuring out the right label. In the end, loving yourself is the first step in finding someone to love and going through this journey with Alex is straight up therapeutic and beautiful to watch.

The Best Eye Candy: Ibiza (2018)

Richard Madden, IbizaPhoto: Aleksandar Letic

Fun fact: Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) has not skipped arm day at the gym, and it pays off in Netflix’s travel comedy Ibiza. If you’re looking for pretty people to get into your eyeballs, Ibizia is a colorful adventure you should dig into. Madden plays the ridiculously hot, Scottish DJ Leo West, who steals the heart of the ambitious Harper (Gillian Jacobs), who finds herself putting it all on the line for romance during a work trip to Spain. Dope Queen Phoebe Robinson and SNL’s Vanessa Bayer round out the cast as her two best friends and add some hysterical laughs into the mix.

The Best Girl-Power: Step Sisters (2018)

Step SistersPhoto: Daniel McFadden

Step Sisters could have easily been a Bring It On rip-off, but the college-centered romp about Jamilah (Megalyn Echikunwoke), a down and out black sorority sister forced to teach a group of uncoordinated white girls how to step in order to get a recommendation to Harvard Law School, is actually a self-aware, empowering good time. The movie even cast Matt McGorry as Jamilah’s desperately-trying-to-be-woke boyfriend. The movie has all of the great performance sequences of classics like the aforementioned Bring It On and Step-Up, but also tackles issues like nepotism and cultural appropriation with grace and honesty. Most importantly, its a movie about showing up for your people and what it means to be a sister — even if you’re not related.

The Best Dark Thriller: You Get Me (2017)

Bella Thorne, You Get Me

Sometimes movies are so insane that they loop back around to being good. Enter You Get Me, or what we’ve affectionately named “Bella Thorne Swimfan” around the TV Guide office. You know what, let’s just leave you with that description because it’s all you need to want to give movie this a chance.

All of these movies and many more are currently streaming on Netflix.

Star-crossed romances (Picture: Netflix/Rex)

Three years and one serious injury to young leading man Dylan O’Brien since its predecessor, the delayed final chapter of The Maze Runner trilogy, subtitled The Death Cure, finally hits cinemas on this side of the Atlantic.

10 of the best Netflix animations for adults

And if dystopian worlds, teenage angst and star-crossed romances are your thing, then there are also plenty of young adult titles currently available to watch on Netflix too.

Here’s a closer look at ten of the best.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

By far the greatest movie to emerge from the relatively new young adult genre, The Hunger Games blew Twilight out of the water when it arrived on the big screen in 2012.

The only chapter available on Netflix, follow-up Catching Fire proves to be almost as compelling as winners Katniss and Peeta embark on a victor’s tour, prepare for a second battle and attempt to stage a rebellion against the wicked Capitol regime.

Battle Royale

Although this Japanese classic was released over a decade before the young adult boom, it shares many similarities with the above.

The story of a group of ninth-grade students forced to compete in a game of survival, Battle Royale is bloodier, darker and much more sadistic than The Hunger Games series it inspired, but it’s also ridiculously entertaining too.

The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials

Having abandoned its intriguing maze premise, the slightly more generic The Scorch Trials doesn’t quite scale the heights of its predecessor.

But there’s still plenty of adrenaline-charged action to enjoy as the surviving Gladers take on the harsh landscapes, evil scientists and zombies of the open roads.

Interest in the Divergent series may have dived off a cliff (its final chapter Ascendant is bypassing cinemas altogether), but its first instalment – set in a society separated into five different factions – is a half-decent attempt to capitalise on the dystopia bandwagon.

Here Shailene Woodley stars as a divergent – someone who can’t be placed in any factions – who teams up with a mysterious gang to discover why her kind are being destroyed.

Paper Towns

Of course, young adult movies aren’t necessarily always about fights to the death, maniacal tyrants and post-apocalyptic worlds.

Adapted from John Green’s same-named novel, Paper Towns is a blend of coming-of-age, romance, mystery and dramedy, in which Nat Wolff’s high-school outcast investigates the disappearance of his childhood friend (Cara Delevingne).

Before I Fall

The young adult genre’s answer to Groundhog Day, Before I Fall stars Zoey Deutch as a privileged teen who’s forced to repeatedly relive her final day until she discovers the truth behind her death.

Unlike the similarly-themed horror Happy Death Day, this 2017 indie is more interested in making you weep than scaring the pants off you.

So make sure you have a box of tissues nearby.

To The Bone

Another Netflix original, To The Bone stars Lily Collins as a young girl battling anorexia in a tale partly based on first-time director Marti Noxon’s real-life struggle with the disorder.

No stranger to young adult fare, Collins (The Mortal Instruments) delivers a career-best performance in an affecting story best described as a cross between Girl, Interrupted and a Lifetime movie.

Tomorrow, When The War Began

This underrated Australian picture follows the fortunes of eight high school students whose coastal home town is suddenly invaded by a foreign military group.

Based on John Marsden’s same-named novel, Tomorrow, When The War Began is a curious mix of explosive action and angst, which might just be the best young adult movie you’ve never heard of.

Nick And Norah’s Infinite Playlist

Adapted from Rachel Cohn and David Levithan’s young adult novel, Nick And Norah’s Infinite Playlist is a little quirkier and more low-key than most of the entries on this list.

Here, Michael Cera and Kat Dennings play two teens who form a bond while looking for their favourite group’s secret show in a charming one-night-in-New-York tale

13 Reasons Why

But the best young adult title of the past few years is not a feature film, but a Netflix original series.

13 Reasons Why stars Dylan Minnette as a teen who receives a box of cassette tapes recorded by his high-school crush explaining each and every reason why she committed suicide.

What sounds like your average sentimental teen premise on paper turns out to be something much more substantial, thanks to its fleshed-out characters, strong performances and a sensitive handling of some difficult themes.
