WITH Christmas just around the corner, half a million of the holiday season’s hottest toys are ready and waiting in Hamleys’ flagship Regent Street store.

And today marks the official launch of the leading toy retailer’s definitive Christmas wish list, put together by the store’s expert buyers.

11 How many of these gifts will be wrapped under a tree this Christmas?

Imagination and interaction are recurring themes this year – and there’s a gadget or gizmo for everyone, from toddlers to twelve-year-olds.

Here, we reveal the must-have gifts guaranteed to fly off the shelves this Christmas.

1. Nerf Mega Mastodon, £90

11 The Nerf Mega Mastodon retails at £90 and is suitable for children aged 8+Credit: Hamleys

Every toy box needs a Nerf gun – and it’s back and bigger than ever.

The makers behind the new Nerf Mega Mastodon have developed its first-ever motorised blaster.

Its imposing size will keep all enemies at bay, as the blaster rapidly fires MEGA Whistler darts from its integrated 24-dart drum.

Meanwhile, the adjustable shoulder strap allows for easy manoeuvring – meaning a Nerf battle could crop up anywhere at anytime.

2. Star Wars Virtual Reality Viewers, £15

11 Star Wars Virtual Reality Viewers retails at Hamleys for £15Credit: Hamleys

It’s their first appearance on Hamleys’ ultimate wishlist – but virtual reality toys are expected to feature heavily on kids’ ‘Dear Santa’ letters this year.

A gizmo for children and adults alike, the whole family can be immersed into the 3D and 360 degree world of Star Wars with this new range of virtual reality viewers.

The special edition gold-varnished viewer is ‘Works with Google Cardboard’ certified – taking you to virtual worlds optimised by a smartphone.

With this toy in the kids’ stockings, Christmas 2016 will well and truly feel as though it has entered the future.

3. Paw Patrol Zoomer, £70

11 Paw Patrol Zoomer is on sale for £70 and is suitable for children aged 3+Credit: Hamleys

This dog is certainly not just for Christmas.

The PAW Patrol Zoomer Marshall is an interactive pup that talks, moves on his own and responds to touch and movement.

Along with his own set of catchphrases and sounds, Zoomer Marshall comes complete with his own water cannon launcher to tackle real missions from the PAW Patrol show.

4. Giant BeanBoozled game, £25

11 Giant BeanBoozled retails for £25 at Hamleys and is suitable for children aged 3+Credit: Hamleys

The Giant BeanBoozled combines two Christmas traditions into one – playing board games with the family and eating stacks of sweets.

However, all is not what it seems – as the Jelly Belly beans may look the same, but some are hiding a foul-tasting secret.

During the game, you can dare members of your family to spin the giant spinner and boldly take a nibble of jelly bean. Was it creamy Coconut or the aftertaste of Spoiled Milk? Strawberry Banana Smoothie or Dead Fish?

If you’re unlucky, this family fun could be enough to put you off your Christmas dinner.

5. DreamWorks Trolls Hug Time Poppy, £61

11 Hug Time Poppy retails for £61 at Hamleys and is suitable for children aged 4+Credit: Hamleys

DreanWorks Trolls Poppy is the lovable, colourful friend – who always makes time for hugs.

The colourful princess speaks 25 phrases when you press her tummy and even plays songs from the film, Trolls.

The doll also comes with a light up bracelet for your child, which when activated lights up the doll’s hair to the beat of the music.

6. Pieface Showdown, £25

11 Pieface Showdown retails at £25 at Hamleys and is suitable for children aged 5+.

Another toy guaranteed to bring all the family together this Christmas is the hilarious Pie Face Showdown.

The laugh-out-loud game dares players to risk getting a full face of whipped cream or a soggy wet sponge as the game’s pie throwing hand randomly chooses its victim – so it’s face cloths at the ready for this one!

7. LEGO Star Wars Krennic’s Imperial Shuttle, £80

11 This toy is one for LEGO fans – but it doesn’t come cheap at £80Credit: LEGO Star Wars Krennic’s Imperial Shuttle whic

This toy lets kids recreate fantastic scenes from the blockbuster movie.

It includes five mini figures and measures over 25cm high. It’s suitable for children aged 9 to 14 years old.

It could be hours of fun as the easy-to-follow instructions help you build the toy before you can start playing with it.

8. V-Tech Kidizoom smart watch, £43

11 This smart watch includes a feature where children can see how many steps they’ve taken each dayCredit: PA:Press Association

This is a smart watch with a camera – ready for photo and video taking. It comes in over 50 different digital and analogue clock faces and eight great games.

Your little ones can also monitor how many steps they take with an in-built pedometer and action sensor.

It’s suitable for those aged four and upwards.

They can join in the fun of exercising and download educational games that help with learning and development.

9. Fisher-Price Think & Learn Code-A-Pillar, £50

11 The Code-A-Pillar is through to help improve problem-solving skills through interactive play

An interactive game for those aged three and above. It encourages experimentation as children have to have to use to problem solving, planning and sequencing skills.

Toys R Us may have filed for bankruptcy, but that doesn’t mean the toy industry is going to suffer this holiday season.

While toy companies have felt pressure from Wall Street in the wake of the Toys R Us filing, industry sales are expected to remain on target.

“Kids, who are the majority of toy consumers, aren’t paying any attention to this,” Juli Lennett, an analyst at The NPD Group, told CNBC via email. “Kids will continue to make their holiday wish lists and parents/grandparents will continue to put these new toys under the Christmas tree. My expectation is that the holiday season will be business as usual for consumers.”

Toy sales in the fourth quarter account for about 50 percent of annual sales for the industry, according to Lennett. Last year, toy sales were estimated to reach $27 billion based on consumer data from NPD. This year, sales are expected to grow 4.5 percent.

In the short term, many toy companies are scrambling to determine just how big of an impact that Toys R Us bankruptcy filing will have on sales.

Hasbro said that it is “currently in the process of evaluating the terms of the Toys R Us bankruptcy filing.” The company declined to comment further.

“There is some negotiations happening between vendors and Toys R Us right now that will take some time, but for the consumer it should be business as usual,” Jim Silver, toy analyst and CEO of TTPM, an online toy review site, told CNBC via email.

He said that Toys R Us is one of the four big retailers for companies like Mattel and Hasbro — the top two toymakers in the U.S. — and a location that many toy makers have used to launch new items.

In particular, WowWee, the toy company behind Chip, the robot dog, is slated to sell an exclusive unicorn version of its popular Fingerlings toy at Toys R Us this season. WowWee did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment.

Companies like Jakks Pacific have already lowered their guidance for the year, expecting a strain on sales because of the retailer’s troubles.

“Most of the guidance reduction is applicable to 3Q17, as JAKK’s shipments to Toys “R” Us (TRU) were light due to uncertainty over getting paid; now that TRU will operate under bankruptcy protection and suppliers will be assured of receiving payment, JAKK expects potentially less of an impact on 4Q17 sales and earnings,” Linda Bolton Weiser, a Davidson analyst, wrote in a research note Thursday.

Jakks said in a statement Wednesday that it “does not anticipate any long-term material adverse impact from the Toys ‘R’ Us bankruptcy filing.”

Weiser lowered her rating on the toy company to underperform from neutral after Jakks cited uncertainty around Toys R Us shipment levels and possible store closures by the retailer in 2018

While the short term may be uncertain for these toy companies, many are feeling confident that the Toys R Us bankruptcy will not have a long-term impact on their businesses.

“2017 continues to present a challenging retail environment, which has now been further disrupted by the Toys ‘R’ Us Chapter 11 filing,” Stephen Berman, CEO of Jakks Pacific, said in a statement Wednesday. “Nevertheless, the announced availability of DIP financing leaves us optimistic that we can resume our relationship with Toys ‘R’ Us as one of its significant suppliers.”

Jakks isn’t the only toy company standing by Toys R Us. Spin Master’s COO, Ben Gadbois, said in a statement that the company will “continue to support Toys R Us.”

“We have strong confidence in the ability of their management, and all their employees, to re-emerge stronger and healthier,” he said. “Toys ‘R’ Us is an important part of the toy industry and we wish them the best.”

Colleen Cason: Toys ‘R’ Us commercial was something to play with

To everything, there is a season. For retailers, the season is holiday.

During that make-or-break stretch in 2017, Geoffrey the Giraffe took it in the shins, and in March, Toys “R” Us announced it will close all 735 U.S. stores.

Going-out-of-business banners are hung at the Ventura and Thousand Oaks locations. The company put up for bids its portfolio of “R-us” domain names, including and

Its founding in 1948 was perfectly timed to the early rumblings of the baby boom, but crippled by debt and targeted by sturdier big-box competitors and swifter online merchants, this toy story has come to an unhappy ending at 70.

Beverly Horn DuBransky, of Ventura, feels more wistful than most at the store’s demise. She belonged to the elite, envied and achingly adorable corps known as the Toys “R” Us kids. In the mid-’80s, this troupe of tots appeared in the company’s TV commercials performing the chain’s earworm jingle, “I don’t want to grow up …” lalalala.

If you YouTube it, you’ll see her in a sideways ball cap singing while hitting a ball at the 20-second mark.

Her smiling face flashes on the screen for a few seconds, but I had no trouble picking her out at a crowded Starbucks last week. The preschool teacher is now 47, married and with four kids ranging in age from 5 to 17 years.

DuBransky was discovered in her native Los Angeles while waiting in line at a bank with her mother. Her mom, Yvonne, was rightly skeptical when approached by a casting agent asking if she would consider putting her daughter in front of the camera.

“She had heard all the horror stories about child actors,” DuBransky recalled.

Things checked out, though, and DuBransky began making the rounds of auditions. Her mom managed expectations, telling her she wasn’t going to get the job most of the time.

Directors liked that she took direction well and exuded joy.

In fact, she loved the work, especially commercials. She enjoyed pretending to be someone else for the couple of days it took to film the spots.

And the food on the set blew her mind.

“It was the craziest. Chocolate cake for breakfast,” she said.

Landing the Toys “R” Us spot meant more to her than just being considered “cool at school.” Before the royalty checks came in, her mom couldn’t afford to take DuBransky and her brother to shop there, she said. On her first trip to the store, she scored a Barbie doll.

Her appearance in that spot did boost her career. She was featured in ads for Wendy’s, McDonald’s and an array of phone companies. She worked on a couple of sitcoms and a Disney movie.

She stayed with acting until the unkindest cut of all came in her college days. She encountered a director who was not seeing her charms and ignored her throughout filming. She later learned she had been edited out of the spot.

By this time, she was studying to be a nurse at Biola University in Los Angeles. She met her future husband, Michael, who was training as a physical therapist. His career took them around the state until they settled in Ventura in 1999.

In the ’90s, she again answered the call when Toys “R” Us produced an update showing the original cast still loving their playthings despite being all grown up.

A couple of her cohorts did achieve show-biz success. Jaleel White would win fame as Steve Urkel on “Family Matters”; Lindsay Price went on to roles in “Beverly Hills 90210” and a string of those forensics-franchise dramas.

Of her show-biz days, DuBransky has few mementos but many memories, most of them good. Her only regret, she said with a smile, is never landing a part in a Barbie commercial.

When she heard Toys “R” Us was going under, DuBransky refused to believe it. But then she considered her own shopping habits and realized she hadn’t spent much time or money there herself of late.

In that way, show business and the toy trade have at least one thing in common: Both are fickle. Like Beanie Babies, Bratz dolls and Furbies, nothing stays in season forever.
