The Crazy History of the Black Cat

OK, totally a tangent, but have you ever wondered why halloween and spooky stories are about black cats and not a white cat or a calico cat? And why are they so frightening?

To get to the bottom of it, we did a little digging. (Or should I say, clawing?)

Turns out, the folklore behind a black cat varies from culture to culture. Black cats are actually considered good luck in Japan, for example. They say a woman with a black cat will have many suitors.

In Egypt, legend has it that the goddess Bast saw black cats as favorable, so households there thought they could gain her favor by having a black cat.

In Western history, however, black cats are looked upon as a bad omen and as a symbol of evil, and are often correlated with witches. Europeans believed that if a black cat crosses your path, it’s an omen of death and misfortune. But their evil work wasn’t always in the form of a cat. European folklore also said that these black cats could transform into human shape and act like a spy or courier for demons and witches. In some areas of the continent, people would burn black cats to be safe.

These beliefs traveled to the United States with the Pilgrims. They were a deeply suspicious bunch and viewed the black cat as an accomplice of the devil. Anyone caught with a black cat would be severely punished or killed.

Luckily times have changed and people no longer hold these beliefs. However, a black cat continues to be associated with Halloween and superstitions.

Some reports say that shelters have a harder time finding homes for cats that are black, which is all the more reason to get one.

Good luck!

Some people may say black cats are bad luck, but we think you are truly lucky to bring home such a cool, beautiful creature and want to wish you good luck in your name search!

Famous Black Cats

Some are real; others are characters from television, films and cartoons. No matter where they came from, they have some great names you can borrow.

  • Binx – This immortal cat from the movie Hocus Pocus is actually a young man who was turned into a cat by three witches.
  • Blackie – Although the name’s not very original, the story is quite interesting. Blackie’s owner was a wealthy antique dealer who left approximate $12.5 million to his beloved cat to be used for his care.
  • Boo Boo Kitty – Boo Boo Kitty may have just been a stuffed animal, but he brought comfort to his owner Shirley in the TV sitcom Laverne & Shirley.
  • Cole – If you frequent Instagram, you probably already know of Cole and his cat Marmalade. These two felines help promote pet adoptions.
  • Felix the Cat – This cartoon kitty always seems to find himself in all sorts of crazy situations.
  • Luna – This anime feline with a crescent moon on her forehead is the guardian cat from the Sailor Moon series.
  • Salem – This is the troublemaking cat from the TV show Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Salem was a warlock who was turned into a cat as punishment for his naughty ways.
  • Snowball II – From the long-running show, The Simpsons, this cat inherited its ill-fitting name from the original family pet who was white. There have been additional Snowballs on the show over the years with Snowball V billed as “the new and improved Snowball II”- at least until its luck runs out.
  • Pluto – Fans of Edgar Allan Poe will recognize this unfortunate feline who gets revenge from the afterlife in the author’s story The Black Cat.

Choosing the Perfect Name for Black Baby Kittens

While you can name your beautiful black cat anything you want to, sometimes it’s fun to choose a name according to the characteristics of the individual animal. In this case, your kitty’s dark fur usually serves as the first inspiration. Once you get beyond your cat’s color, you can begin thinking about its personality and use that to guide your choices. Is your cat sweet, a bit naughty, or perhaps intellectual? Tailor the name you choose to your cat’s true self, and you can’t go wrong.

Popular Black Cat Names

A perennially popular black cat name, Shadow is definitely here to stay as one of the coolest cat monikers. Symbolising darkness and mystery, here is a name that will match the enticing looks only a black cat can get away with.

Olive has won its place on the best cat names list for being the classic female black cat name so many owners choose for their coal kittens. And when you start thinking about all the sweet nicknames you can come up with – from Liv to Livy and Oli – you will love this name even more.

Black cats have the unique ability to almost disappear when you turn off the lights. If it weren’t for their gorgeous sparkling eyes, you would completely lose them until the morning. So if your cat has the habit of coming to say hello in the middle of the night (and scaring you out of your wits in the process), it’s only fair to choose Spooky as your black cat’s name.

We believe that all the bad luck myths and superstitions are just a gross misrepresentation of the fun and lovely nature of black cats. If you agree with us why not choose a name that will show the world just how fortunate you are to have such a ball of joy in your life.

Inspired by the black pepper used to give a spicy taste to food, Pepper is the black cat name you need for a confident kitten that plays by their own rules. If you can’t stop your new feline playing games and chasing everything in sight, you’ve just found the Pepper in your life.

We love black cats for their glossy fur, shining eyes, and marvelously mischievous personalities! And as it turns out, we’re not the only ones. There are many famous black and tuxedo cats who have been star characters in the media, and some have even become historical icons that are recognizable worldwide.

It’s October, so especially now, we love to show our appreciation for our witty, mysterious, beautiful furry friends. Sadly, these gorgeous creatures are the least likely to be adopted from shelters, probably due to ages-old superstition. That’s why we’d like to sing their praises and share how wonderful they really are!

Below, check out these 13 famous black cats, from nostalgic TV characters to classic historical icons.

1. Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch

If you watched comedies from the late 90’s and early 2000’s, you probably loved Sabrina the Teenage Witch. But the real star of the show? Salem, the teen’s snarky, cheeky black cat that lends a hefty dose of humor to the show.

Cool Black Cat Names

Maybe your cat exudes a “cool” attitude. She doesn’t care what you think. She’s going to do what she wants, when she wants. She won’t do something if she’s not in the mood. Think about the activities or topics you think of as “cool.” That’s subjective, so it’s perfectly okay. The names of board games, superheroes, Gothic characters or weather events can become your cat’s name.

If your black cat is fearless, use that part of her personality to help you find a name. Just remember: Any cool option you choose has to fit your cat’s personality and her looks. Also if she is a bit on the magical side maybe these Harry Potter cat names would be a purrfect fit!

So your cat’s name will be an important and familiar sound to him too.

There are a few ideas which have been enduringly popular for the little cuties.

These usually reflect on the mystical mythical history of black cats.

10 Nighttime Names for Black Cats

Names that reference the night or the moon are very popular for cats in general—and black cats, even more so. We can see why, since the black cat has long been associated with all things mystical.

Of course, there’s no credence to the old wives’ tale about black cats being a symbol of bad luck, but some popular black cat names do play on the idea of mystery, spirituality, and darkness. These are the most popular night-related black cat names.

  1. Luna
  2. Midnight
  3. Orion
  4. Star
  5. Jupiter
  6. Venus
  7. Moon
  8. Astro
  9. Nyx (Greek goddess of the night)
  10. Twinkle

Luna: The Year’s Hottest Cat Name

Let’s talk about Luna, which is not only the most popular name for black cats, but also for cats of every color. What is it about Luna? This lovely name, which means “moon” in Spanish, is everywhere for cats, dogs, and human babies alike.

We’re guessing it’s a combination of factors. Of the nocturnal cat name choices, Luna is clearly the most feminine of the lot. (Others include Shadow and Midnight, for example). Not only that, Harry Potter fans have the ethereal Luna Lovegood as an inspiration. Anime lovers may have also chosen Luna thanks to the cat character on the long-running show Sailor Moon.

Luna is also a surprisingly popular name for human babies, where it’s risen to the top 50 girl baby names in recent years. It’s not just that it’s popular, but it’s trending: it jumped from the 453rd most popular female baby name in 2007 to the 35th in 2017! (source). That’s quite a rise, and it appears that cat owners are just as taken with it as parents of new babies.

Choosing the Best Black Cat Name

We get it. Your new cat is part of the family, and their name deserves to be special. Finding the perfect black cat name doesn’t have to be difficult, though. Consider your cat’s personality: a feisty Jack or an aloof Elvira? A sassy Loki or a playful Pepper? The sky’s the limit when it comes to names for black cats.

Your interests and favorites play a part in pet naming, too. Cat owners have chosen names of favorite characters, musicians, books, flowers, and foods to name their new cat. Yes, that means you can name your black cat anything at all—no need to consider their black coat color if it doesn’t strike your fancy. Rocket, Lily, Waffles, or Emmett could all be black kitten names, just as well as the popular Shadow or Felix.

Need Cat Sitting?

Cats seem more independent than dogs, sure, but they need attention, play, and treats when you’re gone, too. Your dark kitty deserves great cat care. You’ve found the best black cat name, so now it’s time to find them the perfect cat sitter.

Find your cat’s perfect match, right from your phone—and then hit the road happy.
