Top Dog Names

Folks, the results are in. After a year of caring for pooches of all shapes and sizes, Mad Paws has revealed the 100 Top Dog Names of 2018.

The list stems from a database of over 300,000 Australian pets, and is Australia’s largest ever pet index. From thirst-piquing drinks to names you’d find in your Facebook friends list, this list draws inspiration from some surprising places. We also unveil Australia’s most popular dog breeds, but don’t expect to find an Oodle in the top three.

#10 Frankie

For the third year in a row, the name Bella claimed the title of Australia’s most popular dog name. Indeed, with the exception of Victoria (in which Charlie proved to be the #1 top dog name), Bella earned the top ranking in every state and territory. All hail Bella. Long may she reign.

Clink clink, let’s drink

In a thirst-quenching turn of events, Australia saw a shift towards drink-inspired dog names in 2018. In fact, one third of the year’s Top 15 dog names were inspired by drinks. Interestingly, this pattern doesn’t continue among the lower ranked names. This suggests that, as far as dogs and drinks are concerned, Australian Dog Owners have an “all or nothing” policy. Condiments also made a cameo, with “Pepper” and “Chilli” taking the 32st and 95th spots, respectively.

Pop Culture Takes a Slump

Compared to previous years, the popularity of pop culture-inspired names saw a decline. Amidst the Top 20 Names, pop culture references were conspicuously absent.

However, pop culture does still hold some sway over naming choices in the Top 100.

(NB: we’re glad to see Simba and Nala are still ranking in the Top 100. With a live-action remake of The Lion King set for release next year, we’re hopeful they’ll reach the Top 20!)

Human After All

When it comes to surging trends among dog monikers, 2018 saw a tidal wave of human names. It’s a pattern that walks hand-in-hand with the growing role dogs play in the lives of their Owners. With more and more Millennials opting for animals over children, dogs are increasingly evolving into companions for their Owners. As such, Pet Owners are now humanising their dogs more than ever. By the same token, classic dog names suffered a sharp downturn in prevalence. The usual suspects, such as “Rover” and “Fido”, didn’t earn a single ranking in the 100 Top Dog Names.

Top Dog Breeds

While Poodle-crosses have dominated breed lists in the past, it was the ever-loving Labrador Retriever that took 2018’s top spot. Moreover, larger and more outdoorsy dog breeds enjoyed a surge in popularity across the board. This follows 2016’s “micro dog wave”, which was a response to more compact living conditions for the average Australian. The prevalence of more outdoor-oriented breeds could suggest a move towards a more active lifestyle for the average Dog Owner. #9 American Staffordshire Terrier Below we’ve listed 2018’s top dog names. If you grew up in Australia, you could be forgiven for thinking you were looking at your high school year book.

How Did You Come Up With Your Dog’s Name?

How did you end up naming your dog? Do you stick to names that fit your dog’s personality? When it’s time to name your new dog do you start checking out baby name lists, or is that just me? How many times have your dog name ideas been vetoed by your family?

Laika is named after a Russian stray dog who became the first mammal to orbit Earth. Luckily my boyfriend is into space so I didn’t get vetoed on that one. But before that? I think I got vetoed by my family at least 10 times before we settled on the name Carter. Perhaps it’s just me, but finding a dog name that the whole family agrees on is always the toughest part.

And because I am not a magical dog naming wizard I can’t take credit for coming up with all of these popular dog names. I got to 350 and started to fizzle out so I turned to the following lists for help:

What is the story behind these 30 adorable pictures of babies with puppies? Well, hang on a minute!

Growing up together with a puppy marks the beginning of a beautiful friendship. There is no other bond more beautiful than that of a little kid and his dog best friend. Dogs are these loving and adorable and grateful beings who stick around humans no matter what. Growing up together with a dog might be the greatest blessing, you get a friend who loves you unconditionally and will always look after you and protect you with their life.

It’s true, it might be a little overwhelming for young parents to have both a baby and a little puppy, at first. In the beginning, it might also look a little worrying for parents to let the baby and puppy share snuggles and sleep together. Still, when the baby is 1 year old or even 8-9 months old, spending time together with a dog might not be such a bad thing. You should choose a breed which is good around children, very protective, playful and intelligent, like a Golden Retriever, a Beatle, Collie or even a Boxer.

Like humans, dogs are extremely social creatures. They also have a sort of “family” instinct, part of what we call “their pack drive”. So, when a dog has this strong pack drive and is really close to the family, then taking care of a new baby comes naturally. If you let your baby play with his canine friend long enough, the dog can become really “smitten” with the baby and form a really strong connection. If they’re both baby and puppy, then they’ll share the desire for a playmate and someone who will always give them attention. Yes, this is how a beautiful, lifelong relationship begins.

And now, let’s gush over these 30 super adorable pictures of babies sharing a moment with their puppy friends. These images can very easily be called the cutest images on the internet.

If you just got a dog, you know one of the most stressful parts of new pupnership is choosing a name. Not only is this what you’ll call your dog forever, but any and all word-bending nicknames will likely stem from this, so no pressure! According to Barkbox, their top five most popular dog names (aka pups that subscribe to its über-popular monthly Barkbox and Super Chewer boxes) are: Bella, Charlie, Luna, Lucy, and Max.

Interestingly enough, these names were also brought up by Texas veterinarian Sara Ochoa, who mentions that the most popular canine monikers she sees in office every day are Bella, Sadie, Daisy, Gunner, Cooper, Maggie, and Tucker. “I have at least one patient a day named Bella or Sadie,” she adds. Ruth MacPete, a vet in California, says that for male dogs, she commonly sees Max, Bailey, Charlie, Buddy, Bear, and Cooper. For female dogs, it’s Lucy, Molly, Daisy, Bella, and Sadie.

But to find the most popular of the most popular, you can’t do better than numbers from Google. Per SEM Rush, which uses data from Google searches, these are the top 150 dog names in the U.S. of 2019.

3. Luna

Find the perfect dog name

Tip 1 – two syllables & “hard” letters

Dogs do not hear words, but tend to recognise sounds. They hear names with two syllables and initial letters such as “CH, S, SCH, SH or K” better than long dog names. Dog names ending with a vowel (A, E, I, O, U) are also recommended. Put simply, dogs hear names like Charley, Sugar, Colly much better than Knecht-Ruprecht or Jeremy-Pascal.

Tip 2 – Consider your commands

Ideally, you will choose a dog name that clearly differs from a command such as “sit, down, heel, stay, give” even if you don’t pronounce it clearly. This means that “Viv” is not a perfect name for a dog is it sounds very similar to the command “give”. If you heed this advice, the dog will find it easier to respond to its name or to a command.

Tip 3 – Test the dog name

It really helps to say the dog name repeatedly out loud. Can all member of the family pronounce the name properly? The dog name is sure to be used frequently in public, so you might think twice about calling out “Fatty” at the top of your voice. If you are always happy to call out the dog name, that is ideal.

Tip 4 – If possible, do not change the dog name

Ideally, you will find the perfect name before the dog even moves in so as to avoid confusing it with alternating names. Older dogs in particular would find this difficult. However, there are situations where a name change is simply unavoidable. Under certain circumstances, it may be helpful to adjust the sound of the name slightly. For instance, “Dickie” could become “Vicky”.

Tip 5 – Dog name from the breeder

In accordance with breeding regulations, names are allocated to puppies at the breeder according to a specific system: The breeder has a breeder name that specifies what can be described as the surname of the dog. The first name of the puppies is derived from the number of litters and is denominated alphabetically. The initial letter therefore indicates the number of litters a breeder has had to date. (Litter 1 = A, Litter 2 = B, Litter 3 =C).

Example of a dog name from the breeder:

Surname = Breeder name: von der Sonnenallee
First name = 1. Litter: A forms the initial letter
Name of dog = Aida von der Sonnenallee
