Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Seasonal Cleaning

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which many people recognize by donning pink ribbons and ties, raising money for cancer research through 5Ks and walkathons or even dying their hair pink. This year, we’d like to tell you about a non-profit that’s near and dear to us at Merry Maids, in the hope of inspiring you to make a difference in the life of a woman battling cancer.
Merry Maids is proud to have teamed up with Cleaning for a Reason®, an international non-profit organization that serves women with cancer by providing housekeeping services. Through this service, women who are undergoing any type of cancer treatment — regardless of the nature of the cancer — receive free house cleaning services.
Merry Maids offices around the United States have been working with the organization for years. Additionally, we historically offer more services than any other Cleaning for a Reason partner! We’re dedicated to helping these strong women as they combat cancer, so they can focus on themselves and their families, not on whether the floor needs to be vacuumed or the tub needs to be scrubbed.
As you can imagine, the treatments, procedures, recovery times and side effects from medications needed by women with cancer can affect their abilities to maintain a daily housekeeping routine. Along with the many physical limitations that can result from chemotherapy, radiation and surgeries, there are also mental hurdles that accompany cancer diagnoses and treatments.
In addition, doctor visits, treatment sessions and different types of therapies are all very time consuming, leaving less time for daily chores and routines. But perhaps most importantly, in the midst of contending with this disease, coming home to a clean home can offer women a sense of comfort and normalcy. And it’s an honor for us to be able to help support these strong fighters as they strive to overcome cancer.
Cleaning for a Reason has been Making a Difference One Home at a Time™ for over 12 years. Since 2006, the Texas-based organization and its partners have donated more than $10 million in free services and have helped almost 30,000 women with cancer. The non-profit currently partners with more than 1,200 professional cleaning companies, including Merry Maids, and shows no signs of slowing down.
If you know a woman bravely fighting cancer who would like receive the services offered by Cleaning for a Reason and their housekeeping partners, please encourage her to apply by visiting the patient application page.
Looking for other ways to make a difference? We’ve got two for you!

  1. Help support this amazing cause and assist in providing cleaning services to women with cancer by donating to Cleaning for a Reason.

Company offers free service to people battling cancer

Those who have been diagnosed with cancer say it’s a difficult and draining battle.

That’s why a local cleaning company is offering free services for people undergoing cancer treatment because it’s one less thing for those women to have to worry about.

Deb Stangee is a breast cancer survivor.

“I started chemo in May and then went on to do radiation and completed that at the end of October,” Stangee said.

Before battling the disease Stangee says she was an independent healthy woman. But cancer forced her to accept help.

“You have to back off and realize you just have to let things go that you would’ve done yourself,” she explained.

She’s one of a couple dozen women in the area who’s made use of a free cleaning service from Merry Maids while undergoing treatment.

“Cancer affects everybody and we know, and I personally have had a family and great friends that have gone through this treatment and I see the troubles they’re going through and how poorly they feel. The person has enough to concentrate on without having to clean the home,” Merry Maids owner Jerry Becker said.

Becker says his company offers the free cleaning to four people at a time, for four months each.

“The economy’s not great right now, but we still made a commitment to this and to help these people out and we’ll continue to do that,” Becker explained.

For Deb, having help cleaning her house was a welcome relief as she focused on fighting for her life.

“It really means accepting the fact that you cannot do it on your own. You do need help from others and it’s ok to take that help,” Stangee said.

If you’re interested in seeing if you qualify for the free service you can contact Merry Maids at 832-6336. You need to show proof of treatment to qualify.

Merry Maids initially started offering free services for those going through treatment through the Cleaning for a Reason Foundation. It’s a national program that has cleaning companies helping those diagnosed with cancer all over the U.S.

West MI Women In Cancer Treatment Could Get Free Maid Service

I came across this post on Facebook from a friend that was encouraging all women to share it because it was offering free housecleaning for any lady going through chemotherapy. It sounded awesome, but almost too good to be true, but it’s not, it’s a real service being offered, and should definitely be shared!

The organization is called Cleaning For A Reason, and they seriously do offer to come to your house once per month for the four months while you’re going through Chemotherapy. The organization currently has over 574 partners around the country that are ready to offer this help.

I checked out their website, and they have two location that are helping here in West Michigan.

Their website say they help women who are receiving treatment for any type of cancer. Why do they offer this? From

Undergoing chemotherapy, radiation and other cancer treatments can take a massive toll on a person’s mind and body. This, a non-profit called Samaritan Maids in Greensboro, North Carolina, understands. Which is why they offer free cleaning services for cancer patients to help take at least one tedious thing off of their to-do list.

The owner, Rebecca Lusk, started the program four years ago in honor of her mother who had a passion for cleaning, but lost her ability to do so when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. “When she was too weak and too sick to clean on her own, it just made her so sad,” Lusk told WFMY NEWS 2. “I would clean the house as a surprise for her a lot.”

So when Lusk heard about Liz Wright, a mother who was diagnosed with breast cancer only a year and a half after giving birth to her daughter, she decided to give back in the same way she used to make her mom smile: cleaning. “It was like a breath of fresh air. It really was. There was no worries,” Wright told WFMY NEWS 2. “We didn’t have to worry about if the dishes were done, was the laundry done, was the vacuuming done, where the windows clean, it was all done for me!”

It’s hard enough to muster the energy to tackle dirty dishes and dusty ceiling fans when you have a head cold — imagine feeling under the weather for months on end.

That’s the situation Stacey Steele found herself in nearly two years ago, after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. “I was so weak that showering would literally be my main activity for the day,” Steele told Today. “And when you’re not feeling good, the last thing you want to do is go into a dirty bathroom.”

Steele said Cleaning for a Reason, a nonprofit that provides free housekeeping to women undergoing treatment for cancer, changed her life. Having a clean home freed Steele up to focus on her health and “keeping things routine and normal” for her kids, she told Today.

Debbie Sardone, 56, first had the idea to offer complimentary housekeeping to cancer patients years ago when she was the owner of a cleaning company. A woman called for an estimate but said she’d have to call back because she couldn’t afford it — radiation and chemotherapy treatment had left her unable to work, according to Today. Later, it dawned on Sardone that she could’ve offered her services free of charge. This was before caller ID.

She founded Cleaning for a Reason after speaking at a national industry convention, where she learned that many other cleaning companies, big and small, were also interested in offering free services for cancer patients.

This year marks the organization’s 10th anniversary. So far the group has provided $5.5 million worth of cleaning services for more than19,500 women. They work with partner companies across the country and Canada to fill about 1,400 requests for service each month. While the businesses do not charge cancer patients for services rendered, Today reports, their employees are paid for their work.

Free house cleaning service helps cancer patients

For women going through the physical, emotional and financial challenges of dealing with cancer, having a dirty home becomes a huge burden. It is made worse by the side effects of recovering from surgery and chemotherapy.

“I just didn’t have the energy to do everything. It makes you feel like a bad mom when you can’t do that stuff, and a bad wife because you can’t help everyone out,” said Lesley Maloney, 34, who is battling a second bout of an aggressive form of cervical cancer.

Many people don’t realize it but there is help available – and it is free.

A national non-profit organization called “Cleaning for a Reason” works with local cleaning companies to provide trained maids who will do everything from dusting to cleaning bathrooms.

There is a limit on the number of free house cleanings that a patient can get but it is meant to provide some help during the difficult period of recovery.

Maid Brigade of WNY is one of the companies that helps local women dealing with cancer. For owner Kathleen Hall, the service is a way to give back to the community. There is also a personal connection because Hall has battled cancer herself three times.

“Our goal is to take one aspect of the chores away from them so they can recuperate and focus on being with their family,” said Hall.

A doctor’s note is required for the application which is submitted through the Cleaning for a Reason website.
