I Tried It: Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo

Art by Elysia Berman

One of the downsides of being born with fine hair is that it gets dirtier a whole lot faster than thicker hair. Or rather, in my case, despite having the driest skin known to man, I have an oily scalp (I know, gross, but I’m going there). Unlike my thicker haired friends, of whom I will be forever jealous, I have to wash my hair much more often, because well, greasy hair just isn’t acceptable. Behold a ghastly “before” image from a morning I hit snooze too many times:

Dry shampoo has always helped, but normally it stretches me so I can wash every other day. That’s all well and good, but as far as I’m concerned I hadn’t found a dry shampoo that was a game changer. Every formulation had some sort of drawback or imperfection. And I most certainly couldn’t use it after working out in the morning before going to the office. That is, until now.

Thats right you guys, Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo just changed the dry shampoo game. Their newest product, which launches on September 6th is a dry shampoo spritz that is unlike any other I have ever tried. And I’ve tried a lot of dry shampoos. Firstly, it is stellar at absorbing oil and sweat, but the best part about it is, it’s really easy to shake out of your hair. So, even though it’s a white powder, I don’t get a white cast on my hair.

Even better, the scent isn’t overpowering. It actually has a time released scent technology that prevents your hair from smelling overly pungent. And don’t get me wrong I love me some texturizing products, but this dry shampoo doesn’t have the grit that other similar products have. That’s because it has the unique technology that allows it to be brushed out almost entirely after it has absorbed dirt, oil and sweat. Simply put, it leaves your hair, well, there’s no other word for it but clean. And to give you an idea of just how clean, I’ve body showered, and extended my time between washing my hair to two whole days. I’ve even used it after squeezing in a workout before a going away party and no-one was the wiser that I had been a hot sweaty mess, but 30 minutes before (when I strode in almost two hours late). Honestly, my next challenge is to see how long I can go between washes while using this product.

For the woman (or man) on the go, crammed with a busy schedule and trying to lead an active life, this product is everything. Seriously, go and grab it. You won’t know how you lived without it.

Living Proof PHD Dry Shampoo is available at $22, and on Travel-size product will be available for $12.

Is Living Proof Dry Shampoo Worth It? Here’s What You Need To Know

You know those products you hear about everywhere and are dying to try for months, reading countless online reviews and debating pros and cons for weeks? As a full-blown dry shampoo addict, there was one product that provoked this reaction in me. For months, I wondered: Is Living Proof dry shampoo worth it? And after making that fateful purchase, I’m full-on in love with this amazing dry shampoo.

Ever since Living Proof PhD (perfect hair day) dry shampoo was released last fall, beauty editors and bloggers everywhere have been singing its praises. I’ve been a dry shampoo devotee for the better part of four years now. I have relatively long, thick hair, and avoiding washing it every day has been a major timesaver for me over the years. Not to mention my hair is healthier and grows faster without constant blowdrying.

I thought I knew the dry shampoo drill, but when the Living Proof dry shampoo was released, it promised something different than any dry shampoo I’d seen. It promised to actually clean your hair, stripping it of sweat and oil. According to the Observer , that’s because Living Proof’s OFMPA molecule (which is patented), soaks up oil and sweat and then brushes off easily, so it doesn’t leave telltale powdery white residue. Impressive, no?

I use a lot of dry shampoo and have been known to plan my workouts around when I want to wash my hair, so this was music to my ears. When I got a gift card for Christmas with the instructions to “spend it on something I wouldn’t normally buy myself,” I headed straight to Sephora to pick up a bottle of $22 dry shampoo.

After a month of regular use, I’m officially addicted to the Living Proof dry shampoo. It actually makes my hair feel clean again, and although some people aren’t crazy about the scent, I actually love the clean, floral smell. As it turns out, I’m not the only one who’s impressed.

Sephora sells a lot of dry shampoos, so this video (which shows how awesome the product is) should convince you it’s special.

Considering this vlogger refers to it as the “best dry shampoo ever!!!,” I’m relatively certain I’m not the only fan.

The only dry shampoo you ever need? I’m a believer in that statement, too.

And last but not least, this vlogger is just as obsessed as I am with this product.

It’s true, $18 is a lot of money to spend on one 4-ounce bottle of dry shampoo. And I admit, I’m still loyal to my beloved Batiste dry shampoo when I’m in a pinch. But as the occasional splurge, you can’t do better than Living Proof.

I hated dry shampoo until I tried this one product — and now I’m never using anything else

I thought I hated dry shampoo — but this one converted me. Chloe Pantazi/INSIDER The INSIDER Summary:

  • I’m lazy about washing my hair — but I don’t love using dry shampoo.
  • I surprised myself when I tried Living Proof’s Perfect hair Day dry shampoo after going to a spin class.
  • The product soaked up sweat and left my hair feeling clean and fresh, with added volume and without the powdery texture I was used to from other dry shampoos.

I hate washing my hair. I’m so lazy about it that I sometimes only wash my roots.

But I don’t love dry shampoo. In the past, I’ve tried dry shampoo by brands like Batiste and TRESemmé, but I’ve always been disappointed. The products left my hair feeling chalky — like they were just sitting on top of my hair’s grease and not cleaning it — and with a synthetic scent reminiscent of drugstore perfume.

However, I couldn’t ignore the glowing reviews I’d read about Living Proof’s Perfect hair Day dry shampoo. Some reviews even claim that using the product after working out can dry sweaty hair. I seriously doubted that a dry shampoo could be that effective, but curiosity (and laziness) got the better of me.

So, I picked up a 1.8 oz bottle of the stuff for $12 — I couldn’t justify spending $22 on the full-sized 4oz version for my first try — and used it after a spin class to see if it could transform my post-gym hair.

To give you some context, this is what my hair looked like immediately after the class.

I wasn’t confident in the dry shampoo’s abilities to deal with this. Chloe Pantazi/INSIDER

Half an hour later, when I got home, my hair was still greasy from sweat, and not completely dry all over. I had a quick shower without washing my hair, before beginning my experiment.

The test

First, I shook the bottle vigorously, which the instructions recommend doing “extremely well for maximum cleaning results.”

Then, I sectioned my hair by pinning the top half in a clip so I could spray portions of my hair one at a time.

Next, I held the product around six inches from my hair and spritzed swathes of my hair in a sweeping motion, from top to bottom. The spray didn’t have an obnoxious fruity smell — it had more of a fresh meadows scent — and I didn’t notice any residue settling on my hair.

Once I’d covered all of my hair, I waited for 30 seconds, as per the instructions, before massaging the product in with my fingers and shaking my hair.

Once the spray settled, my hair didn’t feel greasy. Chloe Pantazi/INSIDER

Working the product into my hair, it no longer felt oily or damp to the touch. I was delighted to find that it didn’t feel powdery, either, and I couldn’t see any visible evidence of the product in my hair in the mirror.

Later, I did a little research to find out why I couldn’t feel the product in my hair in a super noticeable way, and learned that it had to do with science: the spray contains a molecule called OFPMA, which MIT scientists developed to soak up oil without adding texture to hair. This might also explain why this dry shampoo is so expensive.

After such a thorough head massage, my hair looked pretty messy, but at least it didn’t feel gross anymore. It didn’t look like I’d even broken a sweat.

But, once I smoothed down my hair — which seemed to have doubled in size — it looked essentially how it usually does.

The verdict

My hair felt soft and sweat-free. Chloe Pantazi/INSIDER

I’m impressed with how this dry shampoo got rid of the oil and grease in my post-gym hair.

Though my hair didn’t feel like it would after washing it in the shower, the Living Proof dry shampoo is the only one that has made it feel remotely fresh and healthy, without leaving a powdery residue. I liked the added volume it gave, too.

Nobody else seemed to notice, without me telling them, that I hadn’t washed my hair for four days — or after a workout. My husband even complimented my hair, and said it smelled nice.

The next morning, my hair looked the same — I just gave the top layer a quick spritz before leaving home — and my colleagues were surprised (and probably grossed out) when I told them I hadn’t washed it after the gym.

Once I’ve used up my bottle, I’ll definitely pay $22 for the full-sized version, and though I won’t replace washing my hair exclusively with using dry shampoo, I will use it when I’m feeling extremely lazy (which is often), and after a workout if I have plans.

Somehow, I’m now a believer in dry shampoo.
