Born as Betty Joan Perske on September 16, 1924, she was an American actress famous for her peculiar voice and sexy looks. She was born in The Bronx, New York City. Her parents divorced when she was five, and she no longer saw her father, although, she shared a close bond with her mother, who remarried Lee Goldberg and started residing in California after Bacall became a film star.

From her father’s side, she was a relative of Shimon Peres, the eight Prime Minister and ninth President of Israel. Peres has said, “In 1952 or 1953, I came to New York.. Lauren Bacall called me, said that she wanted to meet, and we did. We sat and talked about where our families came from, and discovered that we were from the same family, but, I’m not exactly sure what our relation is… It was she who later said that she was my cousin. I didn’t say that.”

The American Film Institute called her the 20th greatest female star of the classic Hollywood cinema and she received an Academy Honorary Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2009 in recognition of her central place in the Golden Age of Motion pictures.

8 Old Wedding Photos

This is a lovely collection of 8 Old Wedding Photos. These are all black and white antique photos showing Beautiful Brides, and some Handsome Grooms, on their Big Day. Most of these were scanned from my collection and they are all high resolution images that you can download for your Craft and Design Projects. I know these Antique Photographs are very popular right now to use in Junk Journals… perhaps you could use these to make a special journal for a Bride to be!

Wedding Party Photo

This is a fabulous old photo of a Bride and Groom! Everyone looks so jolly don’t they?!! I just love the men’s Top Hats and spats on their shoes, so fun! This one was submitted by a very kind reader named Clare quite a few years ago. Thank you Clare!!

Bride and Groom Old Photos

This one was scanned from a wonderful antique photo album. There were actually 3 charming Wedding Photos in the album, showing 3 different couples, all dressed in their wedding day finery. The Bride is holding quite a large bouquet of White Roses! This first one is my favorite and you will find the other 2 directly below.

In this next photo, I think this couple look a bit happier than the one directly above! The Bride is holding a large Bouquet of Roses and Ferns and she has bits of Fern all tucked into the fabric in the front of her gown. This one was dated 1926 on the back of it.

This is the third Photograph from that old family album. These two look quite young to me, the groom in particular has such a baby face! This one is dated 1918 on the back of it.

This lovely couple have such serene expressions on their faces. the Bride is not wearing a Veil on her head, but I think it may be draped over her shoulders there. She’s got her bouquet pinned to the front of her bodice. The Groom looks very sharp in his best suit! I think I purchased this one at an Antique Mall many years ago.

Victorian Wedding Photo Black Bridal Gown

Next we have a very interesting Victorian Wedding Photo, showing a Bride in a Black Wedding Dress, with a long white veil. The veil appears to be topped with flowers or some type of greenery. She’s holding a white hanky in her hand. Perhaps she is in mourning? The scene is quite formal, with a patterned carpet and Eastlake Style Table with a Velvet tasseled table topper. I love the frame of this Photo, it was apparently taken in Cedar Falls Iowa. There are names written on the card … they are difficult to make out, but it looks like it says Peter Jepson and Amalie on the back.

Real Photo Bride Postcards

These last 2 are Real Photo Postcards of Brides. These are most likely not real brides, but instead they are Actresses posing as Brides. I thought they go nicely with this collection though. The first one is quite a beauty! Her beautiful face is framed with a soft white veil and she has flowers adorning her hair. This is a European card although I’m not sure what country it’s from, the handwriting on the back is French, but the stamp is German. I think the date on the postmark is 1906.

And lastly we see Edna May, who was a beautiful American actress. Doesn’t she look stunning in this amazing Bridal gown with it’s long lace train?! Her hair is crowned with white flowers and her long veil is flowing out of the crown. She’s posing on a staircase with a highly ornate Iron Railing.

I hope you enjoyed this collection of 7 Old Wedding Photos! If you like Vintage Photographs, you might also like our Vintage Cowgirl Collection HERE.

Was Audrey Hepburn Married?

Audrey Hepburn’s influence in Hollywood is iconic and timeless. From her impact on the fashion world to her altruistic endeavors to help children in need, Hepburn has remained an inspiration for decades and continues to influence today’s celebrities even after her death.

Fans of the late Hepburn’s classic movie performances may be wondering if the star was ever able to land herself a happily ever after in real life. Her love life was complicated. Let’s take a closer look.

Hepburn had a traumatic (and heroic) start to life

Audrey Hepburn | Mondadori via Getty Images

Hepburn was born in Brussels, Belgium in 1929. While her life started out with some privileged advantages—including a stint at an English boarding school—World War II would soon change things dramatically.

She studied in the Netherlands after the war broke out, but the Netherlands were occupied by the Nazis in 1940. The occupation would last five years, and Hepburn, then only a child, risked her life to be part of the resistance.

At the age of only 14, Hepburn would use her fluent English skills to speak with British and American pilots who had been shot down. She would bring them food and help direct them to where they should go to get assistance. This early start in the selfless assistance of others would help shape Hepburn’s later life.

Hepburn rose to stardom

When she was 22, Hepburn went to New York to star in the Gigi on Broadway. This performance would help launch her career in acting, which soon took off. After her iconic performance in Roman Holiday just two years later, it was clear that Hepburn was fast becoming one of Hollywood’s most celebrated stars.

Her style was unique and inspirational. In fact, it continues to garner imitation today. Lady Gaga wore a $30 million diamond necklace to the Oscars this year. That necklace had last been worn by none other than Hepburn. She even serves as inspiration to real-life royalty.

Meghan Markle, wife of Prince Harry and Duchess of Sussex, is inspired by Hepburn’s philanthropy and her style and aims to embody her spirit in both.

Hepburn’s later life focused on helping rather than acting

While Hepburn was well on her way to a lifetime in the spotlight, she pulled back from acting as she got older. She instead focused on raising her children (she had two sons) and then to her lifetime of dedication to helping children in need. A

s a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, Hepburn dedicated much of her life to giving aid to others. She even has a humanitarian award named after her to honor her hard work. Orlando Bloom is one of the past recipients.

Hepburn continued to be active up until the end of her life. In fact, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award, in December of 1992. She died the next month from cancer-related complications.

Love was elusive and complicated for Hepburn

While it is clear that Hepburn spent her life giving to and caring about others, she struggled to find love. She was romantically linked to her co-star William Holdren, who would later call her the “love of his life,” but their relationship fizzled out and never rekindled (despite his efforts to win Hepburn back).

Hepburn was married twice in her life and divorced each time. She first married Mel Ferrer, even though he had already been divorced twice, was still married to his third wife when they met, and had five children.

Their relationship was full of turmoil and included two tragic miscarriages before Hepburn gave birth to their son Sean in 1960. They would divorce in 1968 after 14 years of marriage.

Shortly after their marriage ended, Hepburn married for the second time. She wed Italian psychiatrist Andrea Dotti, and the pair had a son named Luca who was born in 1970. Dotti was famously and brazenly unfaithful to Hepburn, and she struggled with their marriage. She even had an affair of her own with co-star Ben Gazzara. She would later divorce Dotti and never remarry.

Hepburn did, however, find the kind of love she was looking for late in her life. While the pair never married, she and Robert Wolders had a supportive and long relationship that lasted from 1980 until her death in 1993.

Audrey Hepburn’s personal life may not have been as charmed as it seemed from afar, to the millions of admirers who soaked up the actress’s beauty, iconic style, and effervescent charisma in her many beloved screen performances. And now, courtesy of 10 hand-written letters that have surfaced as part of an upcoming auction, audiences can get a first-hand glimpse of the Roman Holiday actress’s personal ups and downs, particularly the ones that shadowed her ascent from unknown British ballet dancer to one of the world’s greatest film actresses.

“Would you believe it,” the then 22-year-old wrote her friend and elocution coach Sir Felix Aylmer in 1951, while on the set of Monte Carlo Baby, one of her first films. “I’m in Monte Carlo working on a French picture. The place is heavenly and this is the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

A year later, Hepburn became engaged to James Hanson. While filming Roman Holiday, Express reports that Hepburn was busily planning the wedding, rushing out of rehearsals to get her ivory satin gown fitted. (The unworn bridal gown, with its 21-inch waist and stream of tiny buttons along the back, has since been auctioned off.) Alas, Hepburn broke off the engagement with the powerful businessman—who would later become “the archetypal corporate raider of the 1980s”—and wrote about her disappointment over the split in one of her cursive correspondences.

“It is with a heavy heart I am writing to tell you James Hanson and I are no longer engaged,” Hepburn wrote her friend. “I know there is little I need explain to you, a gentleman of this profession. For a year I thought it possible to make our combined lives and careers work out . . . It is all very unhappy making but I am sure it is the only sensible decision.”

(Indeed, in separate interviews, the actress elaborated, “My schedule commits me to a movie here, then back to the stage, then back to Hollywood. would be spending most of his time taking care of business in England and Canada. It would be very difficult for us to lead a normal married life.”

Not long after the broken engagement, and her Oscar win for Roman Holiday, the actress fell in love with American actor Mel Ferrer, whom she met at a party. The two would go on to co-star together on Broadway in Ondine—the project that earned her a Tony—as well as in 1954’s Sabrina and 1956’s War and Peace. Ahead of their 1954 wedding in Switzerland, Hepburn wrote to Aylmer, inviting him to the top-secret nuptials, which were to be held “in a tiny chapel with a wedding breakfast after.”

“How dearly we would love you to be with us on our wedding day,” Hepburn wrote. “We will have the car take you up to our mountain peak, Friday, for a gathering in our chalet of our nearest and dearest! . . . Saturday will be the wedding . . . We want to keep it a dark secret in order to have it without the ‘press.’”

Sadly, Hepburn went on to suffer several miscarriages, one of which is said to have occurred when she fell off a horse while filming the 1961 film Unforgiven. When she became pregnant a third time, Hepburn reportedly stopped working for a year to ensure the health of her child. And upon delivering her first baby, Sean Hepburn Ferrer, she wrote Aylmer another letter to share her delightful news.

“Sean is truly a dream and I find it hard to believe he is really ours to keep,” Hepburn wrote in a note dated August 17, 1960—a month after his birth. “I long to show him to you. We all three send all our love.”

Unhappily, Hepburn and Ferrer would eventually divorce in 1968, after 14 years of marriage—a presumed relief to Hepburn’s mother, Ella van Heemstra, who outlined her grievances about her daughter’s husband in a separate missive.

Hepburn’s mother called Ferrer a “frog faced delinquent with the spindly legs” and accused Ferrer, who married five times, of causing “sufficient havoc to last a long time.” She vented, “I believe that Audrey is getting rather sick of the neurotic side to him!”

There are 10 letters in total, written between 1951 and 1960, which will be auctioned by Bonhams later this month on behalf of Aylmer’s family. The letters are expected to sell for $6,000.
