What to buy

Pop the question. Engagement rings are discounted more heavily in September than at any other time of the year, according to Jill Gonzalez, senior analyst at WalletHub. (This diamond infinity ring from Sears is marked down 81 percent to $720.)

Look for lingerie. Macy’s is having a Labor Day sale on select intimate apparel, including underwear, with half off in store and online from Aug. 30 to Sept. 4.

Don’t sleep on it. Prices for mattresses typically fall in the spring, however Labor Day bed sales are heating up. Specialty mattresses retailer 1800Mattress is already advertising prices as low as $89.99, according to Phillip Dengler, co-owner of holiday shopping site BestBlackFriday.com.

Think big ticket. It may not be as alluring, but big-box stores are pushing serious sales on large appliances leading up to Labor Day, with 40 percent off at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Sears and Best Buy, Dengler said. (Although the real rock bottom prices come on Black Friday.)

Backyard love. Labor Day sales on grills and accessories are typically the best prices of the year, according to Lauren Greutman, a savings expert at the shopping app Flipp. Markdowns will be around 25 percent, and some retailers may knock off up to 75 percent on certain models. Patio furniture, in particular, hits an all-time low in September with discounts up to 75 percent, she said.

What to skip

Smartphones aren’t smart. With Apple’s big iPhone 8 event planned for Sept. 12, this is not the time to jump the gun on a new smartphone. “We typically won’t see deals on new models until closer to November,” said Greutman.

Don’t toy with games. While stores are sure to have discounts on Xbox and PlayStations, bargain hunters are better off waiting on those types of electronics, which are right in Black Friday’s wheelhouse. The same goes for toys, which see major price reductions immediately ahead of the holidays.

Forget fall clothes. It’s tempting to stock up on back-to-school attire, but those fall fashions will be hawked at much better prices starting as soon as October, and then be significantly less expensive come January, so it’s best to wait until then to reinvigorate your wardrobe. However, if you are bikini shopping, now is the best time, Dengler said.

Outside of Cyber Monday, Labor Day weekend has traditionally been one of the year’s most celebrated shopping extravaganzas, with retailers ushering in mega sales on a variety of categories. Big-ticket items like home appliances, mattresses and even automobiles historically see significantly reduced prices, as does summer apparel.

If you’re looking to save money on any of the above, you should find yourself in luck this weekend, but as with any jumbo savings holiday, you’ll need to do a bit of digging to find best summer deals that are truly worth it. To help, we’ve compiled an expert guide to navigating the Labor Day sales — and noted when it could be best to shop in-store versus online.

BETTER editors, writers and experts take care to round up the best sales and deals. BETTER does have affiliate relationships. So, while every sale is independently scouted, if you buy something through our links, we may get a small share of the revenue.

Summer Apparel

“Summer and back to school staples became available in stores near the end of June and early July,” said Sara Skirboll, the resident shopping & trends expert at RetailMeNot. “Two months is historically the sweet spot when retailers tend to discount apparel items so you can expect to see great savings.”

Clothes and Accessories

Here is a selection of top Labor Day deals in apparel:

Forever 21 is offering 50 percent off in-store and online. If shopping online use coupon code EXTRA50, and go through RetailMeNot to get up to $20 cashback site-wide.

Levi’s is hosting and up to 60 percent off sale styles. Via RetailMeNot, you can get $10 back on online buys of $100 or more, and $20 back on orders at or over $150.

JCPenney is touting 25 percent off an online purchase of $100 or more on select apparel, shoes, accessories, fine jewelry and home goods. Separately, shoppers can get an extra 20 percent off on any purchase paid with a JCPenney credit card, or an extra 15 percent off with any other method of payment. “TopCashback is also offering 10 percent cashback at JCPenney, giving shoppers,” says Chelsea Hudson, personal finance expert at TopCashback.

Old Navy may be the winner for best deal here with 50 percent off all jeans, t-shirts, sweatshirts and dresses.

Appliances, Home Goods and Outdoor Gear

“If you’re in the market for new kitchen gadgets and appliances, you’ll find sales on refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, washers and dryers,” says Hudson.

Here’s a roundup of striking sales:

  • Sears is offering up to 40 percent off appliances plus free delivery ($399 and over), and you can nab an extra 10 percent online with the coupon code APPLIANCE10, plus another 10 percent when using a Sears card.
  • BestBuy is also featuring up to 40 percent off on appliances.
  • Home Depot has outdoor power tools for up to 30 percent off, grills for up to 15 percent off, up to 20 percent off fans and lighting and up to 44 percent off select motion activated kitchen faucets.
  • Wayfair’s Labor Day clearance touts up to 70 percent on kitchen goods and major appliances, 65 percent off on living room, bedroom, office and outdoor furniture, in addition to lighting and storage goods and “pet picks”. Bedding and rugs can be bought at markdowns up to 75 percent.
  • Lowe’s has a range of home items (discounts vary) on sale, with some items reduced by as much as 50 percent.

Mattresses

“New mattress models hit the market right around now, so expect to see discounts on older models,” said Skirboll. “Unlike electronics which are always being updated with the newest bells and whistles, last year’s mattress model will have all the same functionality as the new designs, so I recommend taking advantage of these sales if you’re looking to refresh your sleeping set up.”

Virtually every major retailer who sells mattresses has a big sale going on right now.

Some top contenders:

  • Sears has lowered prices by as much as 60 percent on mattresses, as well as at JCPenney.
  • Macy’s has a “lowest price of the fall season” section on its site, with some mattresses touting savings north of 50 percent.
  • Mattress Firm is selling selections for up to 50 percent off.
  • Wayfair has up to 70 percent off mattresses.
  • Take 10 percent off mattresses at Casper with the code SLUMBER10 — not bad when you consider a twin in its “essential” mattress line retails for just $350.

Additionally, you can get 75 percent off bedding at Wayfair, 60 percent off comforters and quilts at Kohl’s and 70 percent off sheets at Macy’s.

Follow This Money Rule Next Time You Shop

Soon to be ‘Outdated’ iPhones

“Historically, Apple announces new iPhone models in September, so you’ll start to see discounts on older models,” says Hudson. “Those who don’t mind missing out on the newest update can save up to $200 on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus at BestBuy when you buy and activate with a monthly installment plan. Verizon Wireless is also offering $100 off iPhones with an upgrade or add a new line and get $300 off. To sweeten the deal, TopCashback gives $100 cashback for new Verizon device payment activations.”

New Cars

“Labor Day is renowned for car sales and deals, meaning that consumers in the research and planning phase may purposefully hold out or plan ahead to buy a car this weekend, knowing there will be an abundance of deals,” said Curtis Tingle, CMO of Valassis. “Confirming this thought, our consumer intelligence showed a significant spike in consumers looking online for cars around Labor Day in 2017. We can expect fantastic deals on cars this weekend to help drive new automobile lease and purchase activity.”

For these deals, geography is key, so your best bet is to check in with local dealerships, even if that means simply visiting their social media pages.

Brick-and-mortar may offer better sales on ‘touch-and-feel’ items

Many of the sales currently advertised are “online only”, but we can expect a strong in-store presence come the actual weekend. In fact, deals could be even mightier at the brick-and-mortar level.

“Brick-and-mortar stores are still struggling profoundly, and re-strategizing to be a tactile experience,” Jeffrey Galak, associate professor of marketing at the Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon tells NBC News. “Their advantage is that they offer a touch-and-feel experience, so I expect they will heavily push those items —like clothing — this Labor Day. It’s an experience you can’t get online.”

Marshal Cohen, chief industry advisor at the NPD Group, adds that though the online deals are compelling, you can almost guarantee better Labor Day deals in-store on a few key items.

“The best places to look for deals on outdoor furniture, summer apparel, and even the pre-season coat is in-store, versus online,” says Cohen. “Bicycles will also be better to buy in-store, as will outdoor toys. The online mattress industry has taken such a chunk our of the in-store business, so I think will get very aggressive this weekend at the brick-and-mortar level.”

Where to Find the Best Sales This Labor Day Weekend

Image zoom Robert Alexander/Getty Images

We can always count on Labor Day sales to sweeten the deal of trading in summer for fall. Quite a few of our favorite brands will be running sales all weekend long — and some have already started.

Right now, you can start stocking up on travel essentials, like luggage and outdoor gear or fashion and accessories. We’ve even highlighted a few items we just might be buying, too.

Hotels.com

During the Labor Day Sale, you can save up to 50 percent (and get an extra 8 percent off select hotels with the coupon code LETSGO) by booking before September 4. You can score a four-star hotel in Paris, for example, for an average of $161 per night.

Nordstrom

On Friday, September 1, Nordstrom will offer up to 40 percent off clothing for women, men, and children. It’s the perfect time to upgrade your winter coat before the chill sets in. This sale lasts a little longer, until September 10.

Cole Haan

From FatWallet.com, here are four Labor Day deals it recommends:

“4K TVs: Labor Day sales collide with the opening of football watching season. …This year’s Labor Day sales will offer Black Friday-like prices with 60-65-inch 4k TVs models under $700 and 50” 4K TVs under $400 (TCL models have built in Roku), and 35-50” 4K TVs under $300. Best stores to look for these savings that can range from $100-$700 (depending on model and features) include Walmart, Best Buy and especially Dell who also include $100-$300 Dell gift cards that factor in to making Dell’s TV deals some of the best you find all year.

“Laptops: Older laptop models that didn’t sell during Back-to-School sales will be featured at sale prices online stores from Best Buy, Acer, Lenovo, HP and Dell. Expect up to 50 percent discounts with prices as low as $300 for 15” PC laptops and $900 for the 13.3” MacBook Air. You’ll save an additional $100-150 with a student ID at most computer stores, as well. Add that laptop bags and backpacks continue to have sales pre and post Labor Day weekend with some significant savings of 50 percent or better on techies styles at stores like Newegg, Ebay, Adorama and EBags. Getting cash back by shopping through Ebates can add additional savings up to 6 percent.

“Swing Sets: Summer clearance sales coincide with Labor Day sales and offer big savings on outdoor swing sets savings ranging from 20-50 percent. Shoppers can find some select demo swing sets delivered pre-assembled as stores look to clear inventory. Typically, the cheaper models under $500 offer the bigger savings with savings of 50 percent or even higher. The more expensive models will generally be closer to 20-30 percent off.

“Eyewear: There are many online glasses stores that have sales up to 80 percent off on affordable name brand and generic styles including Eyeconic, 6PM and glassesUSA, but also at the big box stores with normal retail pricing under $50. Some of the best savings come direct at Oakley, Nike Store, Ray-Ban and Spy, to name a few. Expect savings as much as $100 on these higher quality styles that can also be fitted with prescription lenses.”

What NOT to buy on Labor Day weekend

When Americans aren’t busy firing up the grill for a backyard barbecue or hitting the road this Labor Day weekend, there’s a good chance they’ll be looking to shop the holiday sales. But if consumers aren’t careful, they could actually be missing out on savings.

While not as big as Black Friday, Independence Day or Memorial Day, retailers still use Labor Day weekend as an opportunity to move merchandise off the shelves in the lead-up to the holiday shopping season. The weekend is also a last-ditch opportunity for many shoppers looking to score back-to-school bargains.

As a result, there are some good deals to be had, but most sales don’t offer the best possible savings. “Labor Day is one of the weaker sales weekends of the year,” said Kristin Cook, managing editor for BensBargains.com. “Most retailers will save their really good stuff for Black Friday, which has turned into basically Black November.”

Here’s what to skip this year or, at least, approach with caution.

Avoid: Fall apparel and footwear

Though the prospect of prepping for layering season may be tempting, Labor Day is perhaps one of the worst times to buy fall clothing. For shoppers in desperate need of warmer clothing as autumn weather rolls in, the first two or three weeks of September are a better time to shop because retailers start heavily marking down “back to school” apparel, Cook said. Better yet, they can wait for clearance sales during Black Friday.

Labor Day is however a good time to buy summer clothing, including swimwear and shorts. Expect retailers also to stock the shelves with this year’s popular Halloween costumes to catch the eyes of trick-or-treaters, but avoid whipping out the wallet to buy one. The best time to buy costumes is right after Halloween.

Avoid: Jewelry

Jewelers tend to restock in October, said Sara Skirboll, shopping and trends expert at deals website RetailMeNot. Consequently, these stores will be disinclined to offer any significant deals in September with such low inventory.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday will be somewhat better, but the best time to shop for that diamond ring or necklace will be in the weeks following Valentine’s Day.

Avoid: Electronics

Deals on items like laptops, televisions and smartphones actually aren’t bad in early September. But those who can wait should. “Black Friday and Cyber Monday discounts prove to be much deeper so purchasing any electronics Labor Day weekend will make a larger dent in your wallet than needed,” Skirboll said.

Along similar lines, don’t expect deals on items from Amazon AMZN, +7.38% . “Amazon puts most of their focus on Prime Day for the summer, so they don’t seem to do be doing any big Labor Day pushes,” Cook said.

Avoid: Toys and video games

Some stores will offer deals on video games and toys during Labor Day, but consumers are almost certainly better off waiting for Black Friday or even later, said Phil Dengler, co-founder of BestBlackFriday.com.

This is especially true for video game consoles. Not only will the discounts be better at the height of holiday shopping season for these items, but many retailers will offer them as bundles with games and gift cards, Dengler said.

Avoid: Purchases through credit card shopping portals

As Black Friday creeps closer, credit-card companies will begin to ramp up the deals they offer through their deal portals, said Ashley Dull, credit strategist and editor in chief of CardRates.com. As a result, discounts offered now by credit cards won’t be as competitive.

Consumers should also approach Labor Day deals with caution if their credit card features rotating bonus categories. “Cards with rotating bonus categories will typically switch to popular holiday retailers during the fourth quarter, unlocking extra rewards,” Dull said.

What to approach with caution

Though Labor Day discounts will pale in comparison to the holiday shopping season, sales on certain items can be competitive.

  • Appliances: Sales on major appliances are typically better during other times of the year. For instance, in May retailers often put refrigerators on sale, because new models become available in June. But some retailers, including Macy’s M, -5.23% and Best Buy BBY, -2.77%, are offering up to 40% off some goods this weekend, which is in line with Black Friday pricing.
  • Gas grills: Labor Day is most famous for its sales on grills — and good deals are often available this weekend as prime grilling season comes to a close. Sales can range between 25% and 75% off, Dengler said. Consumers could save even more by waiting until October or November, although selection will be more limited then.
  • Summer items: With autumn only weeks away, stores are going to be deeply discounting inventory that’s geared toward summer, such as lawn mowers, air conditioners, patio furniture and swimming pools. These discounts will be available across many retailers including The Gap GAP, +1.24%, Target TGT, -3.43%, Walmart WMT, -1.79% and The Home Depot HD, -2.01%.
  • Mattresses: While many will say Memorial Day weekend is the best time to buy a mattress, Labor Day is a good alternative if you missed the sales in May. Major retailers including JCPenney JCP, -4.78% and Wayfair W, -9.06% will be offering discounts of up to 75% off on their mattress inventory this weekend, according to Dengler.
  • Cars: With new models rolling onto lots this time of year, car dealerships will be looking to sell their remaining inventory of 2018 models. In addition to lower prices, car buyers will find attractive financing offers this weekend and rebates, though they should still plan to negotiate a better price.
