Black Friday Deals

Black Friday is renowned for being a day filled with wild sales and even wilder shoppers, but what is it all about?

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday falls on the last Friday of November, and the day after Thanksgiving in the U.S. This year, Black Friday falls on 29th November.

While this has traditionally always been an American tradition, Black Friday sales have become increasingly popular in the UK and across the world. Why? The unbeatable price slashes, special deals and giveaways probably have something to do with it! It’s the perfect opportunity to get a lot of your Christmas shopping done, or even just treat yourself to something you’ve had your eye on. This is particularly useful for large, expensive items like beds and mattresses which don’t need to be replaced very often. You might just find your ideal bed or mattress in a Black Friday bed sale.

The history of Black Friday

You may have wondered ‘why is it called Black Friday?’. There are a few different theories as to why this day has taken this moniker, the most well-known reason being that this shopping day was traditionally so hectic and packed with cars that it caused so many traffic accidents and sometimes even violence. Another, more business-related theory is that it refers to retailers making hefty profits. In business, companies that are said to be ‘in the red’ are those that have a negative balance. Therefore, those that are ‘in the black’ are making a profit.

Are Black Friday sales for one day only?

While Black Friday is technically only 29th November, the event usually runs for the week leading up to the big day. Signing up to company emails, following brands on social media and checking sites regularly is a sure-fire way of getting deals before anyone else. Black Friday sales generally start at midnight on Thursday and last a whole 24 hours.

But, if you do miss the deals on the day, don’t worry. Cyber Monday (2nd December) is another chance to snap up some bargains. The offers on this date are mainly online, so you’ll need to visit websites to make a saving. This is one of the best times to look for sales on Black Friday beds, sofa beds and mattresses as there is a much bigger selection online with home delivery available.

The right mattress provides effective back support leading to a good night’s sleep. A memory foam mattress is especially good as it distributes body weight evenly. Those who prefer shopping online for a mattress can turn to Purple or Casper for quick and smooth transactions. Both of these brands have quality options to fit king, twin and queen sized bed frames. Leesa mattresses are easier to transport, however.

Does Amazon offer Black Friday deals? Holiday season shoppers each year take advantage of the considerable discounts on offer from Amazon and Walmart, the two biggest Black Friday retailers.

Internet Retailer, the e-commerce news portal, estimates accounted for 29% of e-commerce sales in the US during the five days from Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday 2018. Free shipping without a minimum purchase amount at proved to be a big draw for Black Friday shoppers last year. Amazon also creates gift guides and makes the overall shopping experience more accessible to help customers navigate their extensive product selection.

Walmart had the second biggest share of online revenue over Black Friday last year, accounting for 17.9% of online sales from November 22 – 23 according to Edison Trends.

Bed frames and bunk beds are characterized by the material that they are made of. A metal bed frame is more affordable, lighter, and less vulnerable to water damage than wooden models. Wooden bed frames, on the other hand, are customizable, have more elaborative designs, and relatively more durable than metal frames. Bed & bedding shopping also includes the task of picking comfortable sheets, firm but soft pillows, and sets of bedding such as top sheets and blankets.

Where are the best Black Friday deals? Amazon and Walmart headline this year’s biggest Black Friday and Cyber Monday events, with thousands of items across nearly every department being offered at considerably discounted prices.

Amazon reported that during the first nine hours of their Black Friday 2018 sale, Amazon customers bought more than one million toys and 700,000 fashion items. In addition to free shipping with no minimum purchase amount last Black Friday, Amazon provides curated gift guides, impressive product selection and convenient shopping experiences for its customers over the holiday shopping season.

Walmart’s online sales grew by 23% year-on-year during last year’s Black Friday sale, trailing Amazon’s 25% increase in revenue during the same shopping period.

At the end of September I paid £500 for a mattress at the St Helens branch of Bensons for Beds. Later that night I researched the mattress online and the reviews were terrible. Bensons said I could change to another which I did the next day, paying an extra £200.

Within three weeks, it started sagging. Bensons said it would send a Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) technician to look at it. He appeared to confirm it was dipping below its tolerance.

I recorded our entire conversation. I told him I had two slipped discs from an accident years earlier and chose this mattress with great care, thinking if I paid more it would be a good, long-lasting mattress.

Bensons now says his report claims there was no manufacturing fault and the mattress is performing as it should. It offered to exchange it under its 40-night comfort guarantee but there is a 10% admin fee, plus re-delivery, so all together it would come to £104. Why should I pay more? AD, Liverpool

This letter is strikingly similar to cases we have reported in Guardian Money before. As soon as a customer complains about one of its products, Bensons’ response is to send a technician from FIRA, which says it is an independent organisation.

But your case matched the experience of previous readers – in that the technician was sympathetic and agreed there was a problem (caught on tape in your case) – but then filed a report which said there wasn’t a problem. It’s worth noting that in the past FIRA’s marketing materials (aimed at the retailers, who pay the organisation) used to boast how it could reduce the number of returned items, although this has now gone from its website.

Bensons employed the technician because the Sale of Goods Act assumes that any defect that shows itself within six months of purchase is assumed to have been there at the time it was bought, unless the retailer can show otherwise.

We asked the company about your mattress and it has blamed the “dip” on the bed that the mattress is sitting on and the fact that you failed to rotate the mattress on a weekly basis, as it instructs. “We are very sorry that AD is unhappy,” it told us.

“We want to help, so we have offered a range of alternative solutions over and above our obligations, which include sending a different technician at our cost or providing an alternative mattress.” It also offered to upgrade the bed base with £400 in vouchers.

FIRA has told us it stands by the impartial report. It says: “As well as explaining the report, the technician provided advice on how to care for the product and rotated the mattress to help even out the settlement.”

Having spent even more time online reading reviews of Bensons for Beds, you say you have now lost confidence and just want your money back. Bensons has refused a refund. You have since gone to your credit card provider and asked it to intervene.

In your shoes we would take the replacement mattress and see whether that is any better and, if that fails too, commission your own technical report and take action based on its findings – going to the small claims court if required. If you do get a refund, perhaps head to John Lewis or Loaf next time.

We welcome letters but cannot answer individually. Email us at [email protected] or write to Consumer Champions, Money, the Guardian, 90 York Way, London N1 9GU. Please include a daytime phone number

Top Rated Mattress Reviews

– The Best Mattress in a Box of 2020 –

1. The Casper Sleep Memory Foam – ( Free Shipping ) Buy It Here

Buy Now

It seems like everyone has been talking about Casper in the past year and now pretty much everyone has a Casper. This was voted as one of the best mattress in a box by Business Insider and we can see why. We totally dig the free shipping and how you can actually by this one directly from Amazon. Arriving in a sturdy box that your kids can probably use to build a fort with, it’s made of durable and super comfy four-layer construction that still gives you the bounce and support you’re looking for in a spectacular night’s sleep. It’s also hypoallergenic and will help to keep your body temp cool all night long (or during the day if you’re a daytime napper like us).

Good to Know Before Buying:

  • This Casper currently has 4 out of 5 stars on Amazon with more than half being 5-star customer reviews.
  • It’s available in twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king.
  • There are 863 unique customer reviews about this specific one.
  • It has a 100-night risk-free trial (if you don’t like it they’ll pick it up and refund your money).
  • This option also comes with a standard 10-year warranty.

– Best For Sweaty Sleepers –

2. The Leesa Multilayer Foam – Buy It Here

Buy Now

Not only is this one of the top options for those of us who would qualify as ‘sweaty sleepers’ (guilty as charged), but it’s actually pretty cheaply priced too! It’s currently the most popular option at Leesa right now in the foam mattress category, plus the foam helps with cooling your body while you sleep and hitting all the right pressure points and contours your body all at the same time. The extra support layer, which is 6-inches of dense foam, not only supports all body types, but all sleep positions too. So if you sleep on your side sometimes, and then on your back, and then on your stomach, well, this is your best bet. The Wirecutter even named Leesa as one of the best of the year!

Good to Know Before Buying:

  • This foam option currently has a 4 1/2 customer star rating and over 18,000 unique reviews!
  • It also offers a 100-day risk free trial so you can test it our for a couple months to see if you love it too.
  • This one is made in the USA, offers free shipping (!), and even free returns.
  • It’s a pretty cheap (in a good way) option with current pricing starting as low as $535.

– Perfect for Side Sleepers –

3. The Helix ‘Midnight’ Luxe – Buy It Here

Buy Now

So this is our pick for one of the best options for side sleepers but, don’t get us wrong, it’s super comfy for just about anyone. However, their memory foam does cater to side sleepers who need a bit more support and pressure relief all at the same time. This option is also more of a ‘medium feel’ which means that it’s not too soft and not too hard. Basically, it’s a Goldie Locks dream come true. One of our favorite features is the Ultra Cool Technology which actually absorbs your body heat and then releases it so that your body temp stays nice and cool all night long. Plus, the pillow-top makes this mattress about 4-inches higher, which personally we love because we feel like we’re sleeping like a king and not so low to the ground!

Good to Know Before Buying:

Ok so this is officially our favorite mattress of all time. All the others are great, of course, but this is the one that we’ve purchased twice for two different bedrooms and couldn’t be happier. We’ve been sleeping on it for over 1 year and we can honestly say that it’s still as comfortable as day 1 and it hasn’t even come close to losing its shape at all. We look forward to getting into bed every single night and, well, don’t want to get out in the morning, like, at all. It also features “motion isolation” which basically means that if your partner rolls over or readjusts, you won’t feel it at all. We even personally did that tragic wine glass test where we jump up and down and see if the glass spills over. Well, it didn’t and then we drank the wine. It also has “TempActiv Touch’ on top so it helps to keep you nice and cool. In fact, when you move your legs around you’ll actually feel a cool spot which is super comforting. Did we mention we sleep all over the place? We’re talking on our side, our back, our stomach…you name it. Every position feels almost magical. Ugh, we can’t recommend this one enough.

Good to Know Before Buying:

  • This one currently has 4.6 out of 5 stars and over 200 customer reviews!
  • They’re offering a 120 night sleep trial (better than most with just 100 days) so if you don’t like it they’ll come and get it and refund your money or replace with something else.
  • There’s also a 120 “low price guarantee” so if you find it somewhere else within that time for cheaper, they’ll honor that price.

This one has 5 amazing layers, all working towards providing you the best sleep ever. This includes things like quilted gel memory foam to help with increased circulation, a cooling cover to help regular your body temp at night, a breathable base layer to help with contouring, stability and more. One of the things they’re the most known for is their 365 (read: 1 year!), at home trial. That’s right, try it for up to 1 year and if you still aren’t in love with it they’ll refund your money and even help you get it locally disposed of or even donated (if applicable). Pretty amazing!

You know that smell, right? Overall it’ll even provide you a much cooler sleep thanks to its cooling technology to help regulate your body temperature, and it’s perfect for those of us who are looking for a semi-firm sleeping situation.

One of the more popular options online this year, Purple is making some major buzz lately, especially for those looking for theirs to be shipped snuggly in a super convenient box. This one provides you the extra back support you may be looking for, but still gives you the soft comfort to help balance out your night’s sleep. Personally, we love the special motion isolation technology so that when someone else is moving all around you’re not really going to feel it. Take that, restless sleepers! Plus, if you’re an allergy sufferer like us, this can help to cut down on your symptoms and whatnot thanks to the materials that they use that help to cut down on allergens and pesky (and gross) dust mites.

These layers of confusing jargon do little to comfort stressed-out consumers looking for a new mattress. To help cut through the clutter, we contacted a retired industry insider known as “The Old Bed Guy.” The 85-year old former bed maker and seller now runs a popular mattress consumer information site where he gives out his (somewhat cranky) advice.

How to find the right mattress for you

Nov. 12, 201403:25

“Mattresses have no real value,” said ‘Marshall Coyle,’ a pseudonym he uses to avoid blowback from the tight-knit mattress community to which he used to belong.

That statement is a rude awakening to anyone who’s peeped at the price tags after taking a stroll through a mattress showroom lately. With prices running into the thousands, dreams of better “zzz’s” are quickly zapped by sticker shock.

The Old Bed Guy is talking about the markup versus the actual value of the steel, foam, and wool that goes inside a bed. For example, he said, it might cost a factory $600 to make a mattress that they sell to a big department store for $1,300. That store might then slap a price of $2,999 on it, then give it a big discount during one of the never-ending sales, he said.

“The money goes for something other than what you’re sleeping on,” said Coyle.

While every business is entitled to try to make a profit, every maker also has its own special lingo. That makes true comparison shopping difficult. Some of the differences are real. Some are just marketing vapor.

Rather than try to explain it all and risk being as bewildering as the confusion we’re supposed to be relieving, here are 5 tips from the perspective of The Old Bed Guy that always get you a better deal on a mattress, no matter what store or manufacturer you’re dealing with.

Look for stores that have their own factories
A few smaller regional stores make their own mattresses in their own factories. That cuts out the middleman. “I don’t know of a better way as far as value,” said Coyle.

Stores in this category include Charles P. Rogers, McRoskey, Original Mattress Factory, and Verlo. Their stores aren’t everywhere, but the savings and quality difference is enough that this reporter nearly considered a 10-hour road trip just to get a bed.

Buy based on weight
If you’re a fan of strong, long-lasting steel coils, a heavier mattresses usually mean there’s more quality materials inside. “They have 12-15 inches to fill,” said The Old Bed Guy. “You can stretch your coils and make them tall and thin.”

Typical mass-produced beds weigh about 90 lbs while higher grade beds can weigh around 120 lbs, he said. But you won’t find this info online, you’ll have to buttonhole the sales agent or bed maker to get the details.

Buy at the end of the year
“If anything is for real,” said Coyle of the mattress business, “the periods when people don’t buy mattresses see the best deals.”

Few buy before Christmas, saving room on the credit card for the holiday shopping spree. The last 2 weeks of December are a prime time as stores try to unload inventory before the new year. Good savings can also be had the first two weeks of January.

Be careful with Internet-only stores
Some online outfits say they pass on the savings of not having any retail outlets. But it’s not that hard to set up a shop and outsource manufacturing and shipping to China. That can create an accountability gap that leaves consumers in a lurch if their bed starts giving them lumps. “If they won’t give you their street address, don’t give them your credit card,” said Coyle.

What about latex?
“Latex costs more and is worth more, period,” said Coyle.
