Mandy Moore is having a major moment. She’s starring in the mega-hit This Is Us and made her Golden Globes comeback in one stop-and-stare, dramatic, plunging gown.

She last walked the carpet in 2011, and made her mark this year by choosing a show-stopping Naeem Khan gown with one over-the-top detail after the next. It features a neckline so low we don’t want to know how much double-sided tape was involved. Plus, it has a body-skimming Grecian-style design that hugs her curves in all the right places. The design also features a sheer cape for added dramatic effect.

When asked on the E! red carpet if she ever met the designer, Naeem Khan, himself she says she hasn’t, but gave him a sweet shoutout. “I’ve never met him … Hi, Naeem. Your dress is beautiful.”

When she stopped to chat with PEOPLE on the carpet she explained how her fashion’s come a long, long way since her very first red carpet appearance. She said the outfit she chose to the Billboard Awards in 1999 was “the ugliest taffeta plaid ballgown skirt with a pink angora sweater that was sleeveless with a turtleneck. And I had long blonde hair. It was atrocious.”

But she explains her reasoning: “I was 15, so in my mind I was like, ‘This is prom!’”

Moore’s attending tonight for her nomination in the Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited Series or TV Movie category (and found out about it from her TV hubby!).

She told Ryan Seacrest, “I was home, I was awake and I was getting ready to make coffee and my phone lit up with a text from Milo , my costar saying ‘Congratulations!’ and I was like ‘What? Did the show get nominated?’ And then he didn’t answer me back, so I frantically started looking online and saw the news there.”

It’s hard to believe that, after seven seasons, we’re getting ready to say goodbye to Olivia Pope and the Scandal crew. But we’re not doing so without looking back at some of the crisis manager’s best moments—and that certainly includes fashion, something the show’s protagonist has been known for. Not just because Kerry Washington is an incredibly stylish individual, but also because she and Lyn Paolo, the show’s costume designer, have worked together over the past six years to tell Olivia’s story through her clothing.

“Olivia has changed so much over the seasons,” Paolo tells Glamour. “As the stories evolve and Shonda does her magic, we find Olivia in situations that I could never have imagined during the filming of the pilot. And certainly, the palette of the show has changed depending on her state of mind… is often related to the audience through the language of costume.” It’s not just Olivia who’s gone through this evolution. Paolo highlights that Quinn’s and Abby’s costumes have also shifted with their plot lines—but Olivia’s has been much more pronounced and consistent.

In honor of the final season, Glamour asked Paolo to reminisce about some of Olivia’s most emblematic looks. She won’t spill much about what we’ve yet to see—”the only thing I can say about season seven is that, as always, Shonda has created a twisty rollercoaster of emotions for the audience, cast, and crew”—but there are plenty of hidden wardrobing gems in the hundred-plus episodes. (Plus, we still have a Shondaland crossover episode to look forward to.) Check out some of the highlights.
