How Kelly Ripa Kept Mark Consuelos From Making This Huge Mistake

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are one of America’s favorite couples. The pair have been together for over two decades and are still going strong. It’s strange to think of a time Ripa and Consuelos might not have been together. Read on to find out the one thing that might’ve come between the lovebirds, had Ripa not intervened.

Who would’ve thought that a 1995 screen test for All My Children would end with an epic love story? The Live With Kelly and Ryan host and the Riverdale actor’s relationship is as much the same today as it was all those years ago.

Shortly after garnering the roles of Mateo Santos and Hayley Vaughan, respectively, the mom and dad of three began dating off the set.

“I thought she was adorable, hot and sexy and all that stuff,” Consuelos said in a 2014 interview with Huffington Post.”But I was very focused — I didn’t really think I had a chance with her, so I wasn’t really focused on that.”

He ate his words about a year after that screen test. In 1996, Consuelos proposed and the couple eloped to Las Vegas the next day. The rest, as they say, is history.

Consuelos recently went over the top for Ripa’s birthday

I will never be able to properly express my gratitude to everyone (especially @instasuelos and @ryanseacrest) for all the fabulous birthday wishes and love, so I’ll just simply say thank you all for making me feel so good! ♥️#halfwayto99

The key to a successful marriage is mutual respect and adoration and Consuelos doesn’t let an occasion slip without showing Ripa both.

This year, for her 49th birthday, Consuelos outdid himself. Not only did he conspire with Live co-host Ryan Seacrest to surprise Ripa on-air, but Ripa posted to her Instagram story the dozens of white gardenias he placed all over their home on the eve of her birthday.

“Best husband ever,” Ripa captioned a photo. She shared six more pictures of the various arrangements Consuelos inconspicuously situated in various rooms.

As if that wasn’t enough to remind husbands around the world to step up their game, Consuelos then posted a 10-photo gallery to honor the love of his life. In the caption, he shared how her birth “saved” him from a whole different life.

“Happy Birthday to my Fave. I’m really glad you were born. Because let’s face it, if you weren’t, I would’ve been married 3 or 4 times by now, which would’ve been really expensive, not to mention the super tense parent-teacher conferences and all the awkward blended family holiday/vacations. Anyway, happy birthday sweetie.”

Here’s why Ripa’s actions are the reason she and Consuelos are still together

Though their relationship enviable, Ripa and Consuelos once broke up. During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Consuelos admitted they ended up back together because of the way Ripa treated him after.

“We both had to meet and do an appearance on Live With Regis and Kathie Lee … and when we were together wouldn’t talk to me and that made me go crazy,” he said. “So I followed her in Central Park – I stalked her, and then we went back to my place, and then we got married the next day.”

In a later interview with Fox News, Consuelos spoke about the reason why they’ve lasted.

“I’m crazy about my wife,” he said. “We both come from families, our parents are still together — family is super important to us. We have three great kids, and that also bonds you, having that experience together.”

There you have it. Had Ripa acted differently post-breakup, the two may have never worked things out. We can all thank Live With Regis and Kathie Lee for the interview that nudged Ripa and Consuelos back together.

Mark Consuelos and Kelly Ripa Poke Fun at His Snoring — and Play a Recording of It

Mark Consuelos has a snoring problem – and Kelly Ripa is suffering the consequences.

The Riverdale star joined his wife as guest co-host on Live with Kelly and Ryan on Tuesday, and the couple kicked off the show with some friendly banter about finally getting some sleep the night prior.

“We did sleep last night,” said Consuelos, 48.

“You guys, we slept,” added Ripa, 49.

“If you have watched the show yesterday or the past two years, I snore,” Consuelos said. “I have taken up snoring, which is weird. It’s not something you can control, and I wish I could, because I know you need your sleep. We read yesterday that snoring actually has a major impact on the person you’re sleeping with and kills them.”

“It does, it actually kills them,” his wife of 23 years interjected as the studio audience laughed. “It doesn’t kill you, it kills the person you’re sleeping with.”

“I want you to sleep. I know you have to get up early in the morning,” Consuelos told Ripa.

“You want me to live,” she joked. “Thank you, honey.”

Ripa then noted that Consuelos got an “amazing” new app on his phone.

“It records you,” he explained. “It has a very sensitive microphone, so if you start snoring, it records your snoring. Also, if you toss and turn it measures that. So you can put it on the bed and it has a little motion thing too.”

“But last night, we recorded it and I got really good sleep, but I do snore for 10 minutes,” Consuelos admitted. “And we have some of it here.”

Audio of Consuelos’ snoring played in the studio, much to the enjoyment of the audience. Ripa laughed along and joked that Consuelos’ snores sounds like Darth Vader from Star Wars.

“That was a little phlegmy that last one,” Consuelos said as the video ended. “Wasn’t it? Just a little phlegmy?”

“Not for you,” Ripa said. “That was nothing. That was like child’s play.”

In an interview with PEOPLE last week at the holiday party for N.Y.C.-based charity Win NYC,, Ripa and Consuelos — who share children Michael, 22, Lola, 18, and Joaquin, 16 — said their number one priority during the holiday season is spending time together as a family.

“We try not to deviate from how we were raised,” Ripa said, noting that she and her husband were both taught to appreciate “the stuff that you cannot buy, which is being together.”

Ripa added: “They’re making more stuff all the time, but they’re not making more time. So time is really the thing we value.”

Kelly Ripa reveals embarrassing NSFW moment with Andy Cohen in warning to fans

‘Live with Kelly and Ryan’ host Kelly Ripa revealed on Wednesday her most embarrassing NSFW FaceTime call to ‘Watch What Happens Live’ host Andy Cohen. The tale was meant as a cautionary one, warning viewers to text before attempting to video call a friend. Ripa said she gave Cohen, and inadvertently a group of J. Crew associates, an unexpected peep show when she answered the FaceTime call completely naked.

Kelly Ripa admitted she was blown away by daughter Lola’s spending.

The Emmy-winning host revealed on Tuesday’s episode of “Live with Kelly and Ryan” that she had to “shut down” the college student’s debit card after she spent way too much on Postmates, the food delivery service.

“I didn’t know our daughter had Postmates,” Ripa, 49, explained to the audience. “She’s at college and we signed her up for a meal plan, cause we’re not monsters. We signed her up for a meal program.”

“But you know, she doesn’t like the meals at school so she was ordering Postmates,” she added. “Here’s what would happen. She would order the $7 salad but it would cost $25 dollars to have it delivered three blocks in New York City.”

After Ripa and her husband, Mark Consuelos, realized how much money Lola was spending, they shut down the account. “Oh we shut down that debit card account she had,” she said.

Lola, 18, is currently a student at New York University, which she started in August. Her older brother, Michael, 22, also attends the same college while their younger brother, Joaquin, 16, is still in high school.

During the summer, Ripa and Consuelos admitted they had a hard time letting go of their middle child.

“#tbt 2001 from your christening to college,” Ripa captioned a throwback Instagram post. “In the blink of an eye. I’m not crying. You’re crying. Actually Daddy’s sobbing.”

Ripa previously said on the show of being a mother: “I also just loved having . I adore them as the grown-ups that they’ve become … but when they are tiny, they are just so adorable. And they say amazing things, and I miss all of that.”

As of Tuesday, Ripa and her family had been vacationing at their winter home in Telluride, Colorado, since before Christmas. She has been sharing photos from their getaway on social media, including a picturesque shot of her and her Riverdale star husband while they sat in their pajamas in front of their Christmas tree.

The couple has hit the ski slopes at least a few times so far during their winter getaway. Of one snap of Mark, Ripa and Michael, she wrote, “Top of the world with #MC2” and joked in addition, “They dragged me up here.”

A similar post saw Mark and Joaquin standing side by side while out on the slopes. The difference in the father-son photos? Ten years — and a few inches of height for youngest child Joaquin.

Meanwhile, Lola seemed to ring in 2020 on the opposite side of the world. Her most recent Instagram posts show her posing with boyfriend Tarek Fahemy as they take in Egypt.

And though the New York University freshman had been away from her parents and brothers as of late, Lola hasn’t been safe from her mother’s teasing.

On Saturday, Ripa commented on a photo her daughter posted of her and her boyfriend in front of the Great Egyptian Pyramids, which she had captioned, “Mr. and Mrs. Worldwide✨”

“Mr. and Mrs. Worldwide are in Colorado,” Ripa wrote, with a crying laughing emoji. “But Egypt looks amazing. Hi T!”

Michael Strahan on the conflict with former co-host Kelly Ripa: ‘I don’t hate her’

Michael Strahan is opening up about his strained relationship with Kelly Ripa.

In an interview with The New York Times, the former “Live! with Kelly and Michael” co-host didn’t deny that there was tension between him and Ripa about his departure from the show.

“When it was time to go, it was time to go. Certain things that were going on behind the scenes just caught up,” he said, later clarifying that there is no hate from his side.

“If people think, ‘Oh, he hates her’ – I don’t hate her. I do respect her for what she can do at her job. I cannot say enough about how good she is at her job,” he said.

Strahan said he tried to address the issues between them.

“One thing I tried to do is have a meeting every few weeks with her. We met a few times, and that was fine. But then eventually she said she didn’t need to meet,” he said. “Can’t force somebody to do something they don’t want to do.”

Without naming a show directly, Strahan explained a selfish nature he felt from working in television.

“On television, I’ve had jobs where I got there and felt like: ‘Wow, I didn’t know I was supposed to be a sidekick. I thought I was coming here to be a partner,'” he said. “I want us all to be successful. I’ve done things where I went in with team concepts, and I got there and realized it’s not about team. It’s selfish, and I don’t operate well under that.”

More:Michael Strahan hasn’t spoken to former co-host Kelly Ripa ‘in a long time’

He also said his departure could have been handled better. Strahan announced he’d be leaving “Live! with Kelly and Michael” for “GMA” on April 19, 2016, with Ripa taking a previously unannounced week off from the show, prompting speculation that she was retaliating for Strahan’s announcement. He officially departed the show May 13, three months earlier than originally announced.

“It was treated as if I was the guy who walked in and said, ‘I’m leaving.’ That part was totally misconstrued, mishandled in every way,” he said. “People who should have handled it better have all apologized, but a lot of the damage had already been done. For me, it was like: Move on. Success is the best thing. Just keep on moving.”

He says he still learned things from his time co-hosting with Ripa.

“You learn how to craft a story. “What did you do last night?” “Oh, I had a glass of water.” But you learn to tell the story to make it seem like the most interesting glass of water. Those are things that I learned from her. She’s brilliant in that way.”

Kelly Ripa, host and executive producer of Disney-ABC Television’s long-running daytime talker Live with Kelly and Ryan, is surprised to find herself still in the host’s seat at 7 Lincoln Square in New York after nearly 19 years. In fact, she was surprised to end up there in the first place.

Kelly Ripa, host and executive producer, “Live with Kelly and Ryan”

“I often say I got this job because I was the one person not trying to get this job,” Ripa laughed. “There’s something so appealing to people about people who are disinterested. It was such a low-stakes situation for me and that allowed me to be myself, which is crucial to doing this job. You cannot succeed in this job if you aren’t yourself.”

When Ripa was invited to guest host Live with Regis and Kathie Lee in November 2000, Kathie Lee Gifford had announced her departure and Live was looking for Regis Philbin’s next great female co-host. Ripa, who was then starring on ABC’s All My Children (conveniently located across the street), agreed to the occasional gig, but she and husband (and AMC co-star) Mark Consuelos had been simultaneously talking about her leaving the soap opera and staying home to raise the kids. At the time, she had a son, Michael, and was pregnant with her second child, Lola. (Ripa gave birth to the couple’s third child, Joaquin, in 2003.) That stay-at-home mom notion was a nice plan, but it never came to fruition.

The show auditioned several women — including Jane Krakowski, Valerie Bertinelli and Bernadette Peters — but Ripa was announced as co-host and made her debut on Feb. 5, 2001.

A Natural Fit

“When Kathie Lee left, we were going through this whole process of trying out different hosts,” said executive producer Michael Gelman. “Kelly was on our original list. She was just really funny and quick and real and all of those things that she still is.”

For the first year, Ripa continued on All My Children until her contract ended in 2002. Then, she took a starring role in a primetime sitcom, ABC’s Hope and Faith, which ran from 2003-06.

Holding down two full-time jobs while raising two small children was a lot, however, and when Hope and Faith ended, Ripa happily scaled back to just doing Live.

And while many people in television love the rush of live TV, Ripa says there are other reasons she finds the format appealing: “I like the hours of live TV. The adrenaline I could do without. Adrenaline makes you feel alive in the moment but afterwards I’m good and mush-brained for several hours,” she joked.

The continued success of Live — and the show has been airing in national syndication since 1988 — is due to both the format and to the fact that its viewers feel like its hosts are friends they have invited into their living room.

“Our viewers wake up in the morning, pour a cup of coffee and turn on the TV to hang out with us,” Ripa said. “We scour and curate our news feeds so that we can find the best, funniest, most ridiculous stories that will make you laugh and be a departure from what you’ve already heard all morning long; stories that will take you out of your headspace, put a smile on your face and distract you from the reality that there’s a lot of bad news these days.”

Ripa’s natural talent and charisma have helped turn her co-hosts and guest hosts into friends for viewers. After Philbin retired in 2011 at the age of 80, the show ran auditions again. Many men were considered front-runners — including Jerry O’Connell, Josh Groban and Neil Patrick Harris — but the show settled on ex-New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan in 2012. Strahan shot to fame in the new role and departed in May 2016 to go to ABC’s Good Morning America full-time.

Seacrest In

Ripa had long wanted to work with her good friend Ryan Seacrest, but the logistics of his schedule and Los Angeles-based work — particularly American Idol — made it impossible.

This time around, however, ABC, Live and Seacrest all worked together to make Live with Kelly and Ryan possible. Seacrest was announced as Live’s next co-host in May 2017.

One advantage of Seacrest is that he was already a seasoned pro when it came to live TV after 14 years of hosting American Idol live in front of millions of viewers.

“I understand what Kelly does,” Seacrest said. “It takes a special individual to do what she does every day and make it accessible, funny, clever and quick. It’s not an easy job, although she makes it look easy. We have a profound mutual respect for each other and that allows us to have magical chemistry and a special relationship. There’s nothing either one of us can do that will mean we don’t have the other’s back.”

Having that kind of trust with her co-host is important to Ripa. “Sometimes stunt casting for stunt casting’s sake can make one hour feel like six days,” she said. “So much of this job is about trusting the person sitting next to you. I have been really lucky to surround myself with people I trust and know and love.”

“Kelly is honest, she’s smart, she knows when to infuse levity, she makes everyone shine as a guest and feel comfortable,” Seacrest continued. “She creates a dynamic that allows people who don’t know her feel as if they have spent a lifetime with her. It’s not forced or contrived — the genuine and authentic Kelly that you see on TV is who you get in person.”

But it’s not just Ripa’s personality that has kept her on the air every morning: it’s also her willingness to grow, change, learn and eventually, to lead.

“Kelly has continued to be popular over all these years because of all that realness and energy and because of her quick comedic instincts,” Gelman said. “Over time, she really has become a very experienced broadcaster. She’s at the top of her game and one of the best in the business.”

While we all see her each morning, bubbly and alert, debating the day’s issues with Ryan Seacrest on her morning talk show, we can’t help but wonder how Kelly Ripa maintains such high levels of energy and manages to stay in such great shape. She’s been quite vocal about her support of the alkaline diet in the last few years, especially on a recent episode of Live With Kelly and Ryan. “It has changed my life… I swear I think it’s responsible for me not being in pain.”

The alkaline diet is somewhat controversial among experts. While it doesn’t ask dieters to skip meals or remove food groups in its entirety, it pushes foods that supposedly work to keep your body’s pH levels low (foods that aren’t acidic or full of sugar are prioritized over others). The diet’s defenders say some foods — meat, refined or added sugars, processed foods — can lead your body to produce more acid. Most alkaline diet plans end up resembling a vegan diet, but the science behind why the alkaline diet is actually healthy isn’t clear. “Whole, real, unprocessed foods are quite beneficial to the body, but no reliable evidence suggests it has much to do with pH levels,” says Stefani Sassos, the registered dietitian for the Good Housekeeping Institute. “Eating more vegetables, cutting back on sugar, reducing your consumption of processed foods, and drinking more water are just general recommendations that are good for your health.”

Ripa’s iconic physique isn’t all due to this puzzling diet, however — she can often be found in the gym, and she’s recently made a personal decision that may have totally revolutionized her health. Read on to learn more about Kelly Ripa’s diet.

She eats clean.

The 49-year-old talk show host prefers to keep her household eating right. She told Shape that she sticks to simple meals, like a sliced chicken breast with sautéed spinach, lemon, and olive oil.

“I eat a very clean diet. I have lots of vegetables, I eat protein, but I really don’t put a ton of thought into it. It’s everything you’ve read about or heard about in any diet book – don’t eat too much crap, and I don’t,” she told ABC News. “If that’s the secret, then that’s the secret!”

She rarely eats breakfast before going live.

While the mom of three always cooks her kids breakfast in the mornings, she’s previously shared that she won’t eat until after her Live With Kelly and Ryan taping has concluded. “I never eat breakfast until after the show. I can’t seem to focus my mind if my stomach is digesting,” Ripa told Bon Appetit. “At the host chat desk, I’ll have a triple shot skim latte… I find that if I eat beforehand, I’m just making digesting sounds.”

When she does eat breakfast, however, Ripa chooses to avoid sugary staples like pastries or mixed coffee drinks and partakes in a “chocolate” chia seed pudding that’s blended together with just a few ingredients. Coconut water, pit-less dates, a bit of cacao, cashews, and coconut oil (plus a dash of salt!) come together to create a thick pudding, which is dusted with chia seeds. “If you’re constipated or just not feeling regular, this is the answer to your prayers,” Ripa said while sharing the recipe on a recent episode of her talk show.

She loosely sticks to the alkaline diet.

Ripa is one of the many celebs that have sworn by the alkaline diet, where you only eat foods that are low in acid. While she claims this diet plan as “changed her life,” there are still certain foods that she can’t bring herself to eliminate completely from her diet.

“I like to drink coffee. I occasionally will have fish. The alkaline diet is primarily a vegan diet, but I like cream in my coffee,” Ripa told People. “So I don’t adhere to it strictly, but when I do a cleanse, it will be seven days, and then I go back to my normal life. But my normal life is not that different than the alkaline cleanse.”

And what’s included in her “normal life” meals?

“At dinner, I eat a ton of vegetables — and a salad, soup, or a light piece of fish. I try not to have too much cheese or too many high-fat foods, even though I love them,” she previously told Good Housekeeping. “I would love nothing more than to have pizza and french fries every day, but I try to limit those treats to once a week.”

She has decided to stop drinking.

In an episode of Live With Kelly and Ryan that aired in January 2020, Ripa revealed that she silently quit drinking altogether in late 2017, Delish reports. While the alkaline diet allows for a small amount of alcohol and liquor to be enjoyed sparsely, Ripa says she’s decided to forego drinking altogether.

“They’re saying that Americans bought less wine last year,” Ripa said on the show, discussing recent sales trends while joking with Seacrest. “It’s the first drop in a quarter of a century. Now, I believe this is because I quit drinking, that I caused this dip. I have influenced the market.”

She tends to snack healthy — unless there’s Goldfish crackers.

While Ripa takes her workouts seriously, she too sometimes can’t resist a midday snack break. “After work, I’ll have a protein bar and some flaxseed snacks,” she told Good Housekeeping. “I always have Pepperidge Farm Goldfish. I cannot give them up.”

She always keeps a few staples on hand.

There are a few other must-have food items she always keeps stocked in her kitchen, such as Greek yogurt, blueberries, broccoli, and spinach.

“Non-fat Greek yogurt. Even though my children don’t enjoy it the way I do — unless I put honey and granola and make it look like some parfait — it’s a must. Also: half-and-half. For the most part, Mark and I have very clean diets. But we love cream in our coffee,” she told Bon Appetit. “We also always have leeks in the fridge. My kids love leeks. It’s that vegetable that you would be surprised children would like, but they love it.”
