  • CMA Fest host Thomas Rhett married his wife, Lauren Akins, in 2012.
  • Famously, Thomas wrote the hit song “Die a Happy Man” for Lauren (his childhood sweetheart!) a few years later.
  • Today, the couple has two daughters and a third on the way.

Last month, country music fans everywhere were overjoyed to hear that CMA Fest host Thomas Rhett and his wife of seven years, Lauren Akins, are expecting a third child early next year. This new addition is yet another exciting chapter in the couple’s fairytale love story, which has inspired hit songs and taken country music red carpets by storm.

As it turns out, though, Thomas and Lauren’s love story almost never happened — and if it weren’t for her dad, they might not be married today at all. Here, we’re taking a look back at Thomas and Lauren’s relationship, and what helped them become the power couple we know and love today.

Childhood sweethearts

This country couple’s love story goes way, way back: Thomas and Lauren actually met when they were both first graders growing up in Georgia. In the years that followed, they became close friends, and they did things like attend church camp together. They even dated for a brief period of time in high school, but it didn’t feel right at the time, and they went back to being friends.

Both Thomas and Lauren went on to have different relationships (even almost marrying other people), but the feelings Thomas had for his childhood sweetheart never quite faded away. Then, one day, he confessed those feelings to Lauren’s dad — and that confession ended up changing everything.

“Her dad called me and said, ‘If you don’t come over here tonight and tell Lauren how you feel about her, then I’m going to tell her how you feel about her,'” Thomas told CBS This Morning. “I was like, ‘Well, that would be so weird.'”

Six months later, the couple was engaged.

Starting their lives together

Thomas and Lauren eventually got married in October 2012, when they were both 22 years old. They were young, and some people tried to tell them they were making a mistake — but the criticism didn’t bother them at all.

“Everybody told him no, this is not what he should do,” Thomas’s dad, country singer Rhett Akins, once told Country Weekly. ” when I saw them stare at each other the entire 20 minutes they were saying their vows, it’s like these two people are meant to be together. They are beyond in love.”

Newlyweds Thomas and Lauren jumped right into their new lives together. The first year of their marriage, he told People, they spent 285 days on the road together, sharing a teeny tiny bed on his tour bus.

“Die a Happy Man”

One day while working on his 2015 record Tangled Up, Thomas realized he had never written a song for Lauren. He decided he wanted to change that, and ended up penning the lyrics to “Die a Happy Man.” It was a special song for the couple, but it also made serious waves in the country music industry: “Die a Happy Man” went on to win multiple awards, and the track completely changed Thomas’s career.

The music video, which was shot in Oahu where the couple honeymooned, also features sweet footage of Thomas and Lauren together.

Growing their family

Thomas and Lauren knew they wanted to start a family, but they were having trouble conceiving. So they started the process of adopting a baby from Africa, and decided to put any other plans on hold. Imagine their surprise when, a few months later, they found out Lauren was pregnant!

The couple ended up welcoming their first daughter, Willa Gray (now 3 years old), in May 2017. Three months later, Lauren gave birth to their second daughter, Ada James, who is now almost 2.

Adding one more

Just last month, the couple took to Instagram to announce some very exciting news: They’re expecting another child! As Thomas and Lauren, now both 29, revealed in their announcement posts, their third is another daughter.

Thomas is already joking about how hectic his life is about to become, but don’t think he and Lauren are going to stop growing their family after this: Thomas has also publicly said that he wants a “gigantic family,” and he and his wife will definitely be expanding their brood even more in years to come.

“If we stopped having kids now, I know I’d wake up at 45 and go, ‘We should have had five more,'” the country singer told ABC News Radio. “Because I really do want to be able to sit at a Thanksgiving or Christmas table with the most gigantic family on the planet.”

Who is Thomas Rhett’s Wife and Why They Almost Didn’t Get Married

Thomas Rhett is one of the rising stars of the country music scene, with several very popular songs and a loyal legion of fans. His musical signature is his habit of tying in real happenings in his life into the songs he sings, and fans can’t seem to get enough.

His two biggest hits, “Die A Happy Man” and “Marry Me” are both based on the real-life love story that he shares with his wife of many years, Lauren Akins. Read on to learn more about Akins and all about her life with Rhett.

How did Thomas Rhett meet his wife?

Thomas Rhett was born in 1990, the son of singer Rhett Akins and Paige Braswell. He was surrounded by music his entire childhood and grew up knowing such country music icons as Tim McGraw.

Naturally, his interests tended to making music, and in junior high school, he started playing the drums. When Rhett was 20, he dropped out of college to pursue his career in music. He began by writing songs for other artists like Jason Aldean and Florida Georgia Line, but when he released his debut album, It Goes Like This, people everywhere started to sit up and take notice.

Rhett’s second album, Tangled Up, launched his most popular songs to date, including “Die A Happy Man,” inspired by his love story with wife Lauren Akins.

Akins and Rhett met in first grade and were fast friends all throughout their childhood and teenage years. The two even dated when they were 15 but the attempt at romance was short-lived and they went back to being friends.

Still, Rhett couldn’t shake the feeling that he was meant to be with his longtime friend, feelings that were confirmed when she went on to get romantically involved with someone else. It was then, when she was about to get married to that other man, when her father called Rhett and told him that he should let Akins know how he really felt about her.

Rhett took his advice, and the two have been together ever since.

In 2012, Thomas Rhett married Lauren Akins. They were only 22 years old when they got married, but getting married young has definitely worked for them. In 2015, fans were surprised when Rhett’s music video for “Die A Happy Man” was released, featuring none other than his wife, Lauren Akins, as the model.

Rhett admitted that it was inevitable that she would be in the video since the song is “for her and about her.”

The video has even more romantic history behind it, as it was filmed in the Oahu, the spot where Rhett and Akins honeymooned in 2012. Rhett claimed that the video perfectly illustrates how he and his wife are at home, just having fun and being silly.

How many children does Thomas Rhett have?

The year 2017 held even more big life changes for Rhett and Akins. In May of that year, the couple announced that they were adopting a baby girl named Willa Grace from Uganda.

In August 2017, they expanded their family by one more when they welcomed Ada James, their first biological child. Rhett followed his tradition of writing songs about his new family life, penning the hit tune “Life Changes” about the arrival of the couple’s two young daughters.

All in all, Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins seem to be in it for the long haul. Their sweet love story will surely continue to inspire millions of fans around the world – and Rhett will probably continue to write songs about it.

Thomas Rhett married grade-school crush

CONNECTTWEETLINKEDINEMAILMORE

Country singer Thomas Rhett smashed his teeth into his wife’s teeth the first time they tried to kiss.

As teenagers, Thomas Rhett and Lauren were on the trampoline in his parents’ yard. He made his big move and leaned in. Right then, Thomas Rhett’s mother opened the back door and Lauren jerked up.

“Oh, it was so bad,” Lauren Akins says, laughing.

In fact, the whole first part of their relationship was awkward and painful.

But Thomas Rhett (who uses a first double name and no last name) and Lauren, both 25, got through that. They celebrated three years of marriage this past fall. Valentine’s Day is her favorite holiday.

Going through tough times made it that much sweeter.

The two have known each other since kindergarten when they were in the same class at Goodpasture Christian in Madison. They got to be friends in sixth grade, even went to the same church camp several years in a row.

He was head over heels for her throughout their childhoods. Lauren, not so much.

“She was just like the All-American, friendliest, nicest. She was tall, blond, beautiful, pretty much the total package for any dude from sixth grade all the way through high school,” Thomas Rhett said.

“I’m pretty sure every guy had a crush on her.”

The two dated a little in high school — the ill-fated trampoline kiss happened sophomore year — but Lauren said she decided that she and Thomas Rhett were better off just being friends.

He remembers her having a little help coming to that conclusion.

“Mitch Barnes invited her to junior/senior banquet. And that was the turning point,” Thomas Rhett said. “I was crushed.”

They both went on to be in serious relationships in high school, and both nearly got engaged in college, she at UT, he at Lipscomb.

But those relationships ended, and Thomas Rhett, still close with Lauren’s family, got invited to a graduation party in 2011 for Lauren’s sister.

In a chat with Lauren’s dad, Thomas Rhett, then 21, revealed he was still in love with Lauren.

Her dad’s reaction: “If you don’t tell her how you feel about her, I’m going to.”

So Thomas Rhett spilled his guts to her on her parents’ front porch.

“We stayed up ‘til 4 a.m., kissed for the first time since high school,” he said.

That kiss went much better. The couple was engaged six months later.

Lauren says she works hard to make Valentine’s Day special every year.

“Regardless of where we are in the world, Valentine’s Day for us is chocolates, heartfelt letters in a Valentine’s card, a good movie, flowers, and time alone with just us two,” she said.

“I always somehow decorate wherever we are and make it a big pink, red and heart party,” Lauren added.

“Thankfully Thomas Rhett goes along with it for me and it’s a sweet memory that we have together.”

In 2004, rapper Nelly released the song “Over and Over” from his album Suit (a companion to his collection Sweat that was released the same day). Singing the hook on that song — a Number Three hit in the United States — was Tim McGraw, marking an early cross-genre collaboration between country music and the hip-hop community.

The “Hot in Herre” rapper also turned up on a 2013 remix of Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise,” helping to make it one of the largest country chart hits of the last decade. He’s hinted at doing a more country-themed release at some point, but has insisted it won’t be a full-on country album.

In the meantime, Nelly has released a pretty straightforward cover of a recent country hit, Thomas Rhett’s multi-week smash “Die a Happy Man.” Nelly’s version (listen below) replaces Rhett’s subtle electric guitar strums with a looping piano riff and a booming drum break, which he punctuates with ad-libbed exclamations. Lyrically and melodically, he stays true to the original, singing with the same relaxed confidence that made massive hits of his songs like “Ride Wit Me” and “Air Force Ones.” The song is the follow-up to “The Fix,” featuring Jeremih.

“Die a Happy Man” recently enjoyed a multi-week run at the top of the Billboard Country Airplay chart, matching a previously long stay at Number One in 2008 by Taylor Swift. Earlier this week, the song picked up an ACM Award nomination for Single Record of the Year, giving Rhett a total of three nominations — including an Album of the Year nod for Tangled Up.

Seeing the success of “Die a Happy Man,” Rhett notes he’s cautious not to obsess over it but feels like it’s a license to write from the gut instead of chasing the market. In this case, he wrote about the love he felt for his wife Lauren and it turned into what will certainly be one of 2016’s biggest hits.

“A lot of the time it scares me when people say, ‘Hey, you just had your career record,’ because that just means that everything from here on out is downhill and is gonna sound like crap,” he jokes. “It is a career record but it’s also just a starting point for me. It’s fun to have a song like that that I can build on and continue to know that I can write songs about my wife, and be really personal about my life and have the public be interested in them. . . It’s given me a lot of confidence to go write from the heart more rather than just try to go write the hits.”

So far, no collaborations have been announced between Rhett and Nelly. Rhett is currently on the road supporting Jason Aldean’s winter/spring tour and has released the up-tempo track “T-Shirt” as the follow-up to “Die a Happy Man.”

Thomas Rhett Shows His Romantic Side in Brand New Video for ‘Die a Happy Man’

If you’re thinking Thomas Rhett has a little too much chemistry with his costar in his new video for “Die a Happy Man,” it’s all good – that blonde beauty is actually his wife Lauren.

“My wife is one of those people that never wants to be in the spotlight or in videos, but it was inevitable for her to be in this one because I wrote the song for her and about her,” the singer, 25, tells PEOPLE of the romantic ballad he co-wrote with Sean Douglas and Joe Spargur. The tune is the second single off his new album Tangled Up, out Sept. 25.

And if the pair look right at home in the Hawaiian landscape, that’s because it’s familiar turf. “We honeymooned there and ever since, it’s kind of been our spot,” he says of the clip shot on the north shore of Oahu.

The couple filmed the video with director TK McKamy over three days (but wisely arrived four days early, to fit in some vacation time beforehand). “If you’re going to work anywhere, you might as well work on the beach,” he says.

So are he and his wife of three years really that adorable, or was there a little acting involved?

“It’s all fake, but if everyone buys it, we’ll keep on doing it!” says the singer.

He’s just kidding! They really are that in love.

“It really is just us,” he says. “We just hung around and did exactly what we would do if a camera was on us or not, except for the scenes where they’re telling us to kiss underwater – that’s something we don’t typically do!”

Nelly Cuts Cover of Thomas Rhett’s ‘Die a Happy Man’ [Exclusive Premiere]

Nelly’s hip-hop cover of Thomas Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man” stays true to the country singer’s original, but it’s uniquely Nelly. Much like he did with Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” three years ago, the rapper turns up the volume on a certified hit and adds his own distinctive beats and accents. Listen to it first during this exclusive Taste of Country worldwide premiere.

While Rhett’s song from Tangled Up opens with acoustic guitar, Nelly’s is built on a piano riff. Thick beats replace the country singer’s soft drum clicks, but the song remains a dedicated love song. Nelly’s hip-hop version of “Die a Happy Man” is as sexy as the original, and it promises to be a big hit.

In 2012, Nelly and Florida Georgia Line teamed up to create one of the decade’s biggest hits in “Cruise.” The remix was a collaboration that led to a tour and a record-setting time at the top of country charts.

“Die a Happy Man” is purely a perfect cover.

“If I never get to see the northern lights / If I never get to see the Eiffel Tower at night / If all I got is your hand in my hand / Baby I could die a happy man / Oh, yeah I could,” Nelly sings to close the first chorus. Little Nelly-isms like, “But that black dress, shorty / Makes it hard to breathe” make sure the song stands apart as its own recording.

In their late teens, Lauren and Thomas got into serious relationships with other people. “I almost married someone else, and she did too,” said Thomas in an interview with CBS This Morning.

Luckily, his future father-in-law interceded. “Her dad called me and said, ‘If you don’t come over here tonight and tell Lauren how you feel about her, then I’m going to tell her how you feel about her,” Thomas told CBS.

When did Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins get married?

The childhood sweethearts wed in 2012, at age 22. Thomas’s dad, country songwriter Rhett Akins, said the wedding left little doubt that the couple is “beyond in love.”

“When I saw them stare at each other the entire 20 minutes they were saying their vows, it’s like these two people are meant to be together,” he told The Boot.

The newlyweds honeymooned in Oahu—having no idea they’d be back to the island’s North shore in 2015, to shoot the music video for Thomas’s fifth consecutive No. 1 single. Even though Lauren isn’t one for the spotlight, her husband knew he had to cast her in “Die a Happy Man.”

“It was inevitable for her to be in because I wrote the song for her and about her,” Thomas told People.

Everything about the video—the barefoot dancing, flirty teasing, and impromptu kisses—is real, he explained. “We love to let people in on our lives and be an example of what it means to be in love,” he told CBS. His fans loved it: the video now has well over 200 million views.

How many kids do Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins have?

In February 2017, the couple shared plans to expand their family in a simultaneous announcement of both an impending adoption and birth. They brought their first daughter, Willa Gray, home from Uganda three months later.

Their second daughter and first biological child, Ada James, was born Aug. 12, 2017.

“I can’t believe that we have two daughters!” Thomas captioned an Instagram post he shared the next day. “My wife @laur_akins labored almost 36 hours. She is by far the strongest human being I have ever met and I have a new found respect for moms around the world.”

Just after the Akins crew doubled in size—in just five years of marriage, no less!—Thomas released another album, Life Changes. The title track is about his family, and the most successful song, “Marry Me,” is also based on his marriage.

Life changes, indeed! When Lauren wasn’t busy supporting Thomas’s music career, she was juggling motherhood with charitable efforts, including a new jewelry line that benefits Ugandan communities. But it wasn’t long before the couple made another exciting announcement.

“We decided we didn’t have enough princess dresses around the house so we’re adding another Akins baby girl to the family early next year,” Lauren revealed on Instagram in July 2019. “Despite Thomas Rhett’s initial shock (swipe to see video 😂) we are absolutely over the moon for our baby girl!”

Lauren has more experience with being a mom now, but that doesn’t make things any easier.

“I feel so much more pregnant,” she joked to CountryLiving.com in August. But at least she’ll have a few extra sets of hands around when her husband is on the road.

“I can already see how my girls are going to mother her,” Lauren said. “They’re going to have a lot of fun with it. And I will welcome the help.”

Thomas Rhett + Lauren Akins — Country’s Greatest Love Stories

On Oct. 12, 2012, Thomas Rhett blissfully wed Lauren Gregory (now Lauren Akins), whom Rhett has known since the first grade. Their love story starts way back, but it took two tries to get it right.

Rhett, whose legal last name is Akins, told Taste of Country that the couple dated for six months when they were 15 — and it didn’t work. However, the two remained friends and had several separate relationships.

“I don’t think she really noticed me ’til we were 16,” he admits — but he certainly noticed her. The singer shares, “When I heard that she had ended her other relationship, I moved in for the kill. We kissed, and that was it.”

Even though he was certain that Akins was the one he was to marry, Rhett certainly didn’t skimp on the engagement. He popped the question inside his love’s favorite restaurant in Nashville, Giovanni’s. In a private room, Akins’ mom helped stash flowers, candles and the main ingredient: wine.

“There was a bottle, and with a silver Sharpie, I wrote ‘Marry me?’ on the bottle, and she wrote ‘Well, duh, yes’ on the bottle,” Rhett recalls. “Somebody cued “The Way You Look Tonight” by Frank Sinatra, and we danced in this little cigar room. It was pretty awesome.”

Rhett’s father, Rhett Akins, recalls the hesitation some felt about the singer and his fiancee marrying at the young age of 22.

“Everybody told him no, this is not what he should do — except Luke ,” Akins tells Country Weekly. “He called Luke three or four times, and Luke was like, ‘Buddy, if you’re in love and you want to get married, then do it.’”

However, any of the naysayers were silenced during the wedding ceremony, says Akins.

“When I saw them stare at each other the entire 20 minutes they were saying their vows, it’s like these two people are meant to be together. They are beyond in love,” he reminisces. “Everybody there that had doubted or wondered if they were too young, all the doubts are gone now.”

Rhett and his gorgeous wife have a story of true love — and they work hard at sustaining it. As with any marriage, it can be difficult, given the artist’s busy and demanding schedule, and there are lots of temptations along the way.

“Being backstage at a lot of different places, there’s a lot going on, and you gotta be 100-percent honest with the other person,” Rhett explains. “That’s what we’ve tried to master. It’s definitely helped us. When out here, it’s not really an issue. When she’s at home, we try to talk a lot. We try to talk at least three or four times a day. Just to kind of let her know what’s going on and vice versa.”

In addition to open communication, Rhett has set one important ground rule: not getting up close and personal with the women cast in his music videos.

“I was just very adamant with the record label and with my video producer, just saying, ‘Look man, it’s not a big deal. It’s just not really me to be all over some girl in a music video,'” he says. “Even if they are the nicest people in the world, it’s just not really what I do.”

With that kind of mindset and the spark that ignited their love in the first place, Rhett and his wife’s love is rock solid.

Happy anniversary to Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins!

The couple marked seven years of marriage Saturday by gushing about each other on social media — and we’re swooning.

“I can’t believe the Lord has blessed me with 7 amazing years of marriage with (Lauren),” the 29-year-old singer-songwriter wrote. “It’s tough to put into words how crazy the ride has been. We have changed and grown in so many ways and I literally find new ways to love you every single day.”

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

That sweet message comes as they’re set to welcome even more love into their lives soon. Over the summer, the couple, who are already parents to two daughters — Willa Gray, 3, and Ada James, 2 — revealed that they’re expecting another little girl.

And the country crooner is expecting his wife to shine as mom of three.

“There is no one in the world like you babe,” he continued in his Instagram post. “You are the most amazing mother to our kids and you treat me way too good.”

His words accompanied a photo of the pair fly fishing side-by-side in a rocky stream, and he referenced it, writing, “I hope this picture is a glimpse into us getting old together.”

The duo, who have known each other since childhood, swapped vows on Oct. 12, 2012, after he popped the question almost one year earlier.

“There was a (wine) bottle and with a silver Sharpie, I wrote ‘marry me?’ on the bottle,” he recounted of their engagement in a past interview with Pittsburgh radio station Y108. “And she wrote, ‘Well, duh, yes,’ on the bottle.”

In yet another Instagram message on Sunday, the “Look What God Gave Her” singer wrote, “Thanks so much babe for being my rock and for loving me so good. You are my favorite person on the planet.”

Then, suddenly aware of just how much he was gushing about his bride, he added, “Now im gonna quit posting for a month. Peace!!!”

But just as he decided to take a break from raving about her, Akins raved about him.

“You are better than my best dream and so is our life with our precious babies,” she wrote in a post of her own. “I’m so thankful God gave me you:) can’t wait for the next 70 babe … I love you Thomas Rhett.”

Here’s the lowdown: the pair initially struggled with conceiving, which lead them to consider adoption in 2016. Enter Willa, an orphaned infant in Uganda who won over Lauren at a children’s home during a mission trip through 147 Million Orphans.

“She was a total orphan and didn’t have any biological relatives, no one,” Lauren explained to People. “Her life was going to be at the children’s home unless someone else tried to give her a home. So I thought, ‘We need to find her a home.’ I thought we’d be the helpers—and then Thomas Rhett said, ‘We’ll do it!'”

Thus began the couple’s year-long adoption process to call Willa their own. And, as fate (and a little faith) would have it, in the midst of their frequent back-and-forth travels to Uganda, Lauren unexpectedly became pregnant.

“I was in complete and utter shock!” Thomas previously told People once he heard the news. “No one is ever prepared for something like that. It is almost like we suddenly had twins.”

In the wise words of Thomas himself, “Ain’t it funny how life changes?” Read on for everything we know about Thomas and Lauren’s adorable family backstory.

Willa Gray

Little Willa, who was orphaned as a newborn, first crossed paths with her now-mother in April 2016.

“When I met Willa, her story was pretty intense,” Lauren previously told People. “All orphans have heart-wrenching stories, but it felt like this specific baby was ours. I think that the Lord knew what he was doing when he did not let us get pregnant.”

Because of his touring schedule, Thomas didn’t meet his future daughter until the adoption had already begun—and she was apparently pretty skeptical! “I reached for her and she was like, ‘Who the crap are you with that beard?'” he said. “But I was astonished at how quickly I bonded with her—and how immediately, she just felt like she was my child.”

Ugandan adoption requirements demanded that the soon-to-be-parents foster Willa in the country for a year, during which Lauren and Thomas frequently traveled abroad to further the process.

Finally, on May 11, 2017, Willa Gray arrived in Nashville as the newest addition to the Rhett brood, which gave the family of three time to bond before their second daughter arrived.

The then-expectant mother unfortunately had to cut her travels to Uganda short while she reached her third trimester. In fact, Lauren’s parents ended up bringing Willa to the U.S. so she could head home early to rest.

“It felt weird leaving one daughter and making sure the other one is okay,” she said. “But I couldn’t do it another way. It killed me not being able to bring home, but looking back, I think it was a blessing in disguise because I got to be home and nest before she got here—and catch up on my sleep so I wasn’t so jet-lagged!”

On August 12, 2017, just three months after Willa’s arrival, Lauren and Thomas welcomed Ada James.

In an interview with Southern Living, the proud parents explained that both their daughters’ names have family ties. “Willa” comes from Thomas’ grandfather, Willard, and “Gray” originates with Lauren’s brother, Grayson. Lauren’s grandmother was also an “Ada,” and Lauren explained that the name means happy. As for “James,” it’s a family name on both sides.

Willa initially had a hard time accepting her big sister status. “When she came home from Uganda, she didn’t skip a beat. She rocked it!” Lauren told People. “Going from Uganda to America, nothing. Having a baby sister? World changing! She’s been very emotional.”

Since then, though, she seems to have come around, as evidenced by the Rhett crew’s frequent family adventures.

Thomas Rhett and Wife on New Family of Four: ‘We’re Tired, But We’re Happy’

Thomas Rhett and wife Lauren Akins struggled to have a child for years, but in 2017 they became a family of four. In a new issue of People, on stands this week, the singer and his wife open up their home to share what life with two daughters has been like so far.

“There’s never a dull moment,” Lauren tells the magazine. “We’re tired, but we’re happy!”

The couple adopted 21-month-old Willa Gray from Uganda in May, and three short months later, biological daughter Ada James was born. While Rhett and Akins say Willa has easily transitioned from life in Uganda to life in America, having a baby sister shook things up.

“You almost couldn’t tell that she ever lived anywhere else,” Rhett says, explaining that the two have already been to Times Square together and that she’s even shared the stage with Dad. “She’s such a go-with-the-flow child.”

Lauren agrees, but says things took a more emotional turn once baby Ada joined the family. “When she came home from Uganda, she didn’t skip a beat. She rocked it!” Mom says. “Going from Uganda to America, nothing. Having a baby sister? World-changing! She’s been very emotional.”

Lauren was volunteering in Uganda when she met then-newborn Willa and fell in love. Their desire to become pregnant shifted to a desire to adopt the little girl, but that wasn’t an easy process, either. After a year of traveling back and forth to the country to further the adoption process, Lauren learned she was pregnant. It was an emotional time for the family, and they’re grateful to be complete.

“I feel like I went through two separate births. I didn’t ever think Willa Gray would ever come home,” Lauren says. “The blessings around us are incredible. We feel like it’s all part of the plan.”

Oddly enough, Thomas’ future father-in-law pushed the two back together. “Her dad called me and said, ‘If you don’t come over here tonight and tell Lauren how you feel about her, then I’m going to tell her how you feel about her.”

About six months later, the singer-songwriter popped the big question inside Lauren’s favorite Nashville restaurant, Giovanni’s. On October 12, 2012, Thomas Rhett and Lauren Gregory Akins got hitched at Front Porch Farms in Charlotte, Tennessee.
