‘Today Show’s’ Hoda Kotb Reveals How Fiancé Joel Schiffman Proposed

Hoda Kotb of the Today Show is clearly in the prime of her life. Engaged to beau Joel Schiffman and enjoying her role as mom to their two daughters, Haley Joy and Hope Catherine, Kotb has achieved both professional and personal success.

The Today anchor recently spilled some details on how Schiffman popped the question and when they are planning to tie the knot.

Started planning immediately

Kotb immediately got the ball rolling on wedding plans after Schiffman proposed in November. “I sort of think we probably want to do it sooner than later, because what are we waiting for? And I kind of think we might do a destination wedding,” Kotb shared in November, as reported by People. “We may go back to the place we were engaged. We haven’t thought about it too much, but we might do something like that. The place is special to us.”

The Today anchor was aiming for simplicity for her special day. “Nothing we do is about bells and whistles in that way,” Kotb said. “All I want it to be is fun and happy and I just want everybody to feel easy breezy. No coordinated bridesmaids. Come as you are. That’s the theme of the rest of my life.”

Still keeping it simple

Kotb stopped by The Ellen DeGeneres Show earlier this week and spoke of her upcoming nuptials. Aiming for a fall wedding, she is apparently keeping with the low-key theme.

“I think it’s going to be super simple, no big deal, we’ll bring some friends, we’ll probably be on a beach somewhere,” she told DeGeneres, according to People. “And I can’t believe how different I feel since that moment. I thought we were in love and love is love, so what? But I did feel different the minute he proposed.”

The journalist shared that her mom is picking out her dress for the big event. “It was so funny, cause she’s picked everything for me, and she said, ‘Honey, I don’t know, do you want me to pick your wedding dress?’” Kotb said of her mom on E!’s Pop of the Morning. “And I said, ‘Well, you picked the first one, so yes, please pick the second one!’” Kotb said laughing, referring to her former marriage to tennis pro Burzis Kanga.

While Kotb is still foregoing bridesmaids, she’s having someone special stand up with her. “Just my sister,” she said.

The proposal

Kotb gave DeGeneres some details on how her boyfriend of six years popped the question.

“One day we were at the beach, and we were hanging out, and we had tequila and churros. I mean, I was like, fingers into the churro sauce, and Joel started to give one of his — he likes to give little speeches about love,” she shared with DeGeneres. “So he’s like, ‘I’d like to say something.’ And he started talking and I was looking at him and I thought, ‘Oh my God, this is going somewhere.’”

The Today co-host described the moment Schiffman got into proposal position. “He literally kicked the seat out from under him and dropped down on one knee,” Kotb recalled. “I didn’t know I could be shocked . And I actually didn’t know could love him more, but I did, in that moment. And I’ve felt different ever since.”

Now 55, Kotb realizes that the best things in life often come later. “Isn’t it so crazy how your life, like, throws everything at you in different ways?” Kotb said on Pop of the Morning. “I was gonna say, at age 49, that was the year I met Joel, when I was 49 years old. I feel like everything in my life, every good thing, has happened since.”

Congratulations to the happy couple!

Since Today show anchor, Hoda Kotb announced that she adopted a second baby girl in April, inquiring internet minds have wanted to know more about her family. And we’re not just talking about the latest addition, Hope Catherine, or her two-year-old Haley Joy. We’re referring to Kotb’s (now) fiance, Joel Schiffman, with whom she’s raising her two precious daughters.

Schiffman, a finance guy, 61 and Kotb, 55 got engaged on a beach in Mexico this weekend after six years together. Kotb previously called the relationship “the most natural one I’ve ever been in,” adding “I’m going to be with Joel until my last breath.”

Here’s everything we know about the happy parents, including how Schiffman popped the question.

Tell us about the engagement!

The couple was enjoying supper on the beach during a vacation in Mexico when, in the middle of their meal, after regaling Kotb with some “beautiful things,” Schiffman popped down to one sandy knee and said “Would you be my wife?”

Kotb told her TODAY co-anchors on November 25 that she was absolutely floored. “I was totally shocked…he had a good poker face,” adding, “My heart has literally been pounding.”

She also joked that she’s not quite sure what to tell their daughters. “How am I going to explain (to the girls) your parents are going to get married? We’re still trying to figure out that part.”

Instagram

As far as the timing goes, Kotb shared, “If someone had said to me when I was a little girl, ‘Hey Hoda, guess what your life is going to be like: When you’re 49 or 50, you’re going to meet the guy you’re going to fall in love with, and you’re going to have children at 55 and 56,’ I would have been like, ‘What?’ It just shows you, the perfect life for you, and this is for me, is exactly as it comes,” Kotb told People.

“Everything may look out of order, and it kind of feels it a little bit, but it is all right on time,” says Kotb.

So, um, what’s Joel Schiffman’s job?

He’s in finance. Or, according to LinkedIn, more specifically, he’s the Head of U.S. Defined Contribution and Insurance Sales at an investment management company, which sure sounds fancy.

Where did Hoda and Joel meet?

Kotb told Andy Cohen that their meet-cute occurred at an “event I didn’t want to go to.” She explained, “It was pouring rain. It was a bunch of Wall Street guys. I had to give a speech. They were bored…” But before she could leave, she had to sign a few photographs, and that’s when Schiffman caught her attention. “Make it out to me,” he said. (We’d like to assume with a wink.) With that, Kotb confirmed with someone else at the event that the “Jewish gentleman,” as she described him to Cohen, was indeed single, and passed along her email address so they could be connected.

“He is the best guy,” she gushed to Cohen.

In fact, for a little more backstory, it was because of Joanne LaMarca Mathisen, the executive producer of TODAY with Hoda & Jenna. Well, technically her husband, who coerced Kotb to go to the event, which is why in this sweet anniversary post she shared, she thanks LaMarca and her gent.

And what about their daughters?

“He’s an unbelievable father to Haley,” Kotb, who is a breast cancer survivor, told Entertainment Weekly before Hope came into their lives. Schiffman also has a grown daughter from a previous marriage.

“I always wanted to have a child, and I wondered if Joel did, too,” the talk show host revealed to Wendy Williams.”I went to Joel and I said to him, ‘I need to discuss something with you and it’s really important,’ and I said, ‘And I want you to not answer me now. I want you to marinate, I want you to take a week … take as long as you need.'” She shared that she wanted to adopt a child together, and he swiftly responded, “‘I don’t need a minute.'” That’s when Kotb said, “I knew I’d chosen the right man.”

When they adopted Hope, Kotb shared with her Today show co-hosts over the phone, “You know what’s funny? You think that you’re full. That’s exactly how I felt with Haley and Joel and everything. Joel and I were standing there when they hand you the baby, and it’s the closest thing to a live birth you’ll ever see, but in that moment I was like, ‘Oh my God, my heart just grew.'”

Joel said “I love you” first.

“I remember him saying it to me,” Hoda shared on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna. “And after he said it, I remember just sitting there because I wanted to feel it for a minute.” She explained that usually she’s a “pleaser” but rather than just respond immediately, she opted to let that moment “wash over” her.

“Like, just to sit with that for a minute—somebody saying, you know, he just said, ‘I love you,’” she continued. “And I paused, and he goes, ‘Don’t leave me hanging out here in the abyss,’” she said, adding that she respected his bravery.

“He goes, ‘Please,’ and I told him I loved him, too, but I remember thinking to be the first person to say it is risky and that takes guts,” she said. “And it’s easy to be the one who says, ‘I love you, too,’ and I will always admire him because he has guts.”

So, when’s the wedding?

Kotb, who was previously married to former U.N.O. tennis coach Burzis Kanga, told Entertainment Weekly in March: “I have never teased a marriage. Joel will be with me the rest of my life, I have no doubt.”

On Watch What Happens Live in 2018, she was asked if they were going to pull a Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell—as in, stay together for 35 blissful years without ever drawing up the paperwork. Kotb responded, “I kind of like their vibe. Don’t you think? I think it’s okay.”

But we now know how that turned out. Wedding bells are most certainly in the (not so distant) future.

It’ll be “sooner rather than later, because what are we waiting for?” Kotb said on TODAY, adding, “We’re already getting it together. We just want to do it.”

“We may go back to the place we were engaged in Mexico. Lots of margaritas and Mexican food. Keep the tequila on tap! But, we haven’t thought about it too much, nothing we do is about bells and whistles in that way. If he said let’s do it right now, I would. All I want it to be is fun and happy and everybody to feel easy breezy,” says Kotb.

“No coordinated bridesmaids, just come as you are,” she added. “That’s the theme of the rest of my life.”

She said yes! Hoda Kotb is engaged to her longtime boyfriend Joel Schiffman. The TODAY show anchor, 55, announced the news Monday, Nov. 25 on the show. “I have to tell you something. A friend of mine, a friend of ours, asked me to let you guys in on a secret,” she teased. “I’ll give you her initials. Her initials are Hoda Kotb, and she’s engaged.”

The mom of two then excitedly flashed her ring leaving her fellow NBC anchors, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, Jenna Bush Hager and Craig Melvin, shocked. Kotb went on to share details about the proposal revealing that Schiffman popped the question while they were having “a little dinner on the beach” during their vacation.

“We went to our usual vacation, we ended up having a little dinner on the beach and we were done with the dinner, I was eating the churros, licking the bottom of the bowl and he was like I have something else I would like to say,” the TV personality shared. “And he said some beautiful things, and then he got down on one knee, and he said would you be my wife? And I said yes.” Keeping the secret from her cohosts had her heart “pounding,” she said.

The couple, who has been together for six years, have yet to tell Kotb’s daughters Haley Joy, 2, and Hope Catherine, who she adopted in April. “How are we going to explain, ‘your parents are going to get married?’” she asked her cohosts. “We’re still trying to figure out that part of how exactly to explain that.”

Roker noted that she has two “built-in flower girls” with her daughters, to which Bush Hager jokingly responded, “Who? Savannah and me?”

Kotd does already have some ideas for the wedding. “I sort of think we probably want to do it sooner than later, because what are we waiting for?” Kotb shared in an interview with PEOPLE. “And I kind of think we might do a destination wedding. We may go back to the place we were engaged,” she added, referring to Mexico. Don’t pack your bags just yet. “We haven’t thought about it too much, but we might do something like that. The place is special to us.”

One thing’s for sure: Every aspect will be really thoughtful. “Nothing we do is about bells and whistles in that way,” she said. “So it always sort of meant something. Something special to our relationship, in Mexico.”

Don’t expect to see Bush Hager and Guthrie up there in matching dresses. “All I want it to be is fun and happy and I just want everybody to feel easy breezy. No coordinated bridesmaids,” said Kotb. “Come as you are. That’s the theme of the rest of my life.”

Prior to announcing the joyous news, Kotb took to her Instagram to share a message that read: “And suddenly you know…it’s time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings.” She captioned the post, “Happy Monday! Good day for a fresh start xo.”

Schiffman and his bride-to-be first met at an event with “Wall Street guys,” where Kotb was invited to speak. After it wrapped, she stayed around to sign autographs, including one for Schiffman. “I said, ‘Who should I write it to?’” Kotb recalled on Watch What Happens Live in 2015. “And he said, ‘How about to me?’ And I said, ‘How ’bout to you?’”

Hoda Kotb is spilling some wedding details!

She gave a few hints on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna Wednesday about when and where she will tie the knot with fiance Joel Schiffman after announcing last week that he proposed to her after six years together.

“We’re going for sooner rather than later because we think, ‘Why are we waiting?'” Hoda said.

The two got engaged during a tropical vacation, and that type of setting could also be the site of their nuptials.

Hoda Kotb’s surprise engagement news has people talking

Last week, Hoda gave the story behind her beautiful engagement ring, telling People that Joel met with her friend Jennifer Miller, a jeweler, to create the diamond and sapphire ring.

“What touched me so much about this ring is that he thought about it,” Hoda said. “And he thought about what I might like. He went to (Miller) and they were sharing things back and forth unbeknownst to me. He was giving her ideas.”

The couple has been dating for six years.

The proposal comes seven months after they adopted daughter Hope Catherine. They are also the parents of adopted daughter Haley Joy, 2. When asked about their daughters’ reaction, Hoda said, “How are we going to explain? Their parents are going to ‘get married.’ We’re still trying to figure that out.”

In 2016, Kotb and Schiffman reached a big milestone in their relationship. She told Sirius XM, “It’s a little weird to be in your 50s and we’re like ‘Hey, we’re moving in!’ It’s like we’re kids. It’s so weird.”

She gushed to People magazine the year before, “He’s the guy that gives me butterflies at 50 years old. It’s one of the most natural relationships I’ve ever been in. I’m so happy, I really am. But you know sometimes you hate to jinx something. I’m like, ‘Don’t jinx it!’”

Hoda was previously married to Burzis Kanga for two years until 2007.

Fans of the Today show were elated when anchor Hoda Kotb announced in November that she and her boyfriend of six years, Joel Schiffman, got engaged. Ever since the 55-year-old NBC star shared the exciting news, everyone has been anxious to get the scoop on the happy couple’s wedding plans.

Here’s everything we know so far about Hoda Kotb’s engagement and wedding:

Who is Hoda’s fiancé, Joel Schiffman?

Patrick McMullanGetty Images

For starters, the man who Hoda has described as “the finest man I’ve ever met,” works in finance. According to the 61-year-old’s LinkedIn, he’s the Head of U.S. Defined Contribution and Insurance Sales at an investment management company.

Hoda and Joel first met in the summer of 2013 when the Today star was speaking at an event for Wall Street professionals. Since then, Hoda has shared details about their meet-cute, including the first time the financier met her former Today co-host Kathie Lee Gifford. Hoda and Joel decided to go public with their relationship in 2015 after The Daily Mail published photos of them together on a Miami beach.

On November 25, Hoda showed off her gorgeous engagement ring, shocking fellow co-hosts Jenna Bush Hager, Craig Melvin, Savannah Guthrie, and Al Roker during Today’s fourth hour. Needless to say, Joel did an amazing job.

What does Hoda’s engagement ring look like?

When asked how Joel popped the question, Hoda spared no detail about the special moment.

“We ended up having a little dinner on the beach,” she said on Today, while revealing that the two were on a tropical vacation. “And he was like, ‘I have something else I would like to say,’ and he said some beautiful things, and then he got down on one knee. Then he said, ‘Would you be my wife?”’

NBCGetty Images

According to Ira Weissman, founder of the consumer education website The Diamond Pro, the NBC co-host’s ring appears to be a five-carat Asscher cut diamond set in a blue sapphire halo. “A ring of this impeccable quality could easily retail for over $250,000,” he previously told GoodHousekeeping.com.

Following Hoda’s on-air announcement, People caught up with the Today star, who spilled that Joel actually consulted one of her friends, jeweler Jennifer Miller, to help him design the perfect ring. “What touched me so much about this ring is that he thought about it,” Hoda said to the outlet. “And he thought about what I might like. He went to and they were sharing things back and forth unbeknownst to me. He was giving her ideas.”

What will Hoda’s wedding dress look like?

The search is on for the perfect wedding dress, and Hoda has already enlisted the help of the best person she knows for the job — her mother, Sameha.

“It was so funny because she’s picked everything for me, and she said, ‘Honey, I don’t know. Do you want me to pick your wedding dress?’ And I said, ‘Well, you picked the first one, so yes, please pick the second one,’” Hoda told E! News. “But this one … it’s gonna be fun. So, my mom’s in charge, and I’m so happy.”

When is Hoda’s wedding and where will it take place?

Shortly after saying yes, Hoda shared that she and Joel were planning to exchange vows “sooner rather than later, because what are we waiting for?” And most recently, the bride-to-be sat down with Ellen DeGeneres to reveal that the couple is actually hoping to tie the knot before the end of the year.

“I think we’re going to do it in the fall,” Hoda told Ellen. “I think it’s going to be super simple, like no big deal. We’ll bring some friends. We’ll probably be on a beach somewhere.”

The 55-year-old reiterated the simplicity of the upcoming celebration, a detail she first shared back in December.

“We may go back to the place we were engaged in Mexico,” Hoda told People. “But we haven’t thought about it too much, nothing we do is about bells and whistles in that way.
