Your hair can get oily for a number of reasons but it basically comes down to the fact that some people just produce more oil than others. Oil is secreted by the sebaceous glands on your scalp; it keeps your scalp healthy and moisturized and your hair soft and shiny. However, if your hair feels greasy not long after a wash, or if you find it consistently looks flat at the roots, your scalp is likely producing too much oil.

Straight hair gets oily more quickly than wavy or curly hair as the oils from your scalp can travel to the lengths and ends more easily than if your hair is coiled. Also, overwashing your hair can also cause a vicious cycle as your scalp may be compelled to produce more oil if you’re stripping them away. If you’re a compulsive hair toucher, beware! Constantly playing with your hair causes the oils from your hands to transfer, so it’s a good idea to try to be as hands-off as possible and avoid fidgeting with your hair.

To keep the oiliness at bay, try training your hair by washing it less often. You can also use a dry shampoo in between washes to absorb excess oils and give your hair some volume at the roots.

Mythbusters: Does Trimming Actually Make Hair Grow Faster?

In the world of beauty it’s pretty easy for fiction to turn to fact. One of them being the idea that trimming hair speeds up growth. So, is it just a tale or the real deal? Read on to find out.

True or false: We’ll just come right out and say it—false. “Cutting the ends of your hair doesn’t affect the follicles in your scalp, which determine how fast and how much your hair grows,” says Paradi Mirmirani, MD, assistant professor of dermatology at the University of California, San Francisco said to CNN. “Hair grows an average of a quarter-inch every month—whether or not you cut it.”

BUT…

You should still keep trimming: Regular trims can still make your hair look a little longer. Ultimately regular trims don’t make hair actually grow faster, but if you want length without the damage, it’s ideal to visit a salon every six to eight weeks to maintain a healthy mane.

Does Cutting Hair Really Make It Grow Faster? Well, No, But Here’s What Might

When it comes to growing out long and luscious locks, many of us will entertain many different ideas of how to do it. But it’s time to debunk the long and popular belief that cutting hair will make it grow faster. As nice as it would be for a regular trim to help achieve mermaid-length strands, ARROJO cosmetologist Kelly Rowe let me know that unfortunately, this is not how it works. “It is a myth that you need to get frequent trims to grow your hair out,” she tells me via e-mail. “Hair grows from the root not from the ends so a trim has no effect on the hair other than making it look healthier and shorter.” Bummer.

But where did this idea even come from, counterintuitive as it is? Well, the more time allowed between trims means more time for ends to become damaged and split. And if split ends are left untreated, they could break off higher than where one might trim anyway. In this way, split ends can end up making hair shorter than an actual trim. So even if regular trims can’t make hair grow longer, faster; well-timed trims can help keep hair healthy and prevent it from breaking.

So when is the optimum time to trim if you’re trying to grow out your hair? Rowe says, “Hair grows on average 1/4-1/2 inch a month with little variance. When trying to grow your hair out it should be trimmed every 10-12 weeks depending on the health of your hair.” Of course, the more frequent the trim, the longer it will take for hair to reach your desired length. So the key here seems to be to really pay attention to the health of your hair. As long as you don’t notice any split ends or breakage points, keep the trims to a minimum.

And the best way to avoid needing trims is to maintain strong and healthy hair. Rowe suggests, “Keep hair growing faster by maintaining a balanced diet that includes plenty of healthy fats and protein. Also, keep hair stressors to a minimum. Anything that is going to put stress on the hair is going to weaken the strand, making it more likely to break before longer lengths are reached.” So even though cutting hair does not actually make it grow faster, keeping hair healthy and trimming only when necessary can help hair reach its long and strong potential.

3 Things to Do (and 5 Things Not to Do) to Make Your Hair Grow Faster

Exactly how much time depends on genetics. On average each strand grows about a half-inch in a month. But hair doesn’t grow like that nonstop; it grows in cycles. At any given moment, about 85 percent of hair follicles are in the anagen (growing) phase. The rest of the follicles are in either the catagen (transitioning) phase or the telogen (resting) phase. For some lucky individuals, the growing phase lasts as long as seven years; for others, it’s as little as two. At the end of this stage, the strand falls out, and its follicle remains dormant and hairless for about three months. After that a sprig of hair finally sprouts, and the hair growth process starts again. “If your hair never gets past your shoulders, chances are, you have a shorter anagen cycle than others do,” says Francesca Fusco, a dermatologist in New York City.

What Slows Hair Growth

If you come from a family of women with Rapunzel-like locks but yours are not, the problem may be external. Here are some factors affecting hair growth (and ways to counteract them).

Split ends: Turns out that the old adage is partly true: If you cut your hair, it won’t grow longer, but it’s more likely to achieve its fullest potential. Why? The ends, which have been styled and colored the most (since the farther a strand is from its root, the older it is), are vulnerable to splitting. When you don’t trim regularly, hairs can split right up the shafts and break off, even though the follicles are still in the growth phase. “I’ve had clients with such bad split ends that the hair actually got shorter as it grew it out,” says Mark Townsend, a hairstylist in Los Angeles. A quarter-inch trim every 8 to 12 weeks should keep your ends in one piece. Fine, curly hair, which tends to split more easily than other textures, is best cropped bluntly; “razor cutting,” which creates thinned-out layers, can precipitate frayed ends.

Extensions: Over time, both the types that are glued in and those that are sewn into tight braids can pull on follicles, injuring them and slowing hair growth. Consider temporary clip-in pieces to get a longer look if your hair breaks easily.

Bleaching: Peroxide, ammonia, and other oxidizers used to lift hair cuticles and remove pigment may also allow natural moisture to escape, leaving strands brittle. So condition at least three times a week to keep it healthy and help hair grow faster.

Stress: Anxiety increases your level of the stress hormone cortisol. This can cause nerve cells to release chemicals that, in the case of chronic stress (which affects eating and sleeping habits), may shift follicles from the growth phase to the resting phase.

Medications: “Some antidepressants, such as Zoloft, may shorten the anagen phase,” says Alan Bauman, M.D., a hair-restoration physician in Boca Raton, Florida. Other drugs, such as certain contraceptives and medications for thyroid or cholesterol conditions, can compromise hair growth as well. See your doctor for alternatives.

How to Grow Hair Faster

Hair grows faster when it’s healthy. Consider these factors and learn how to make your hair grow faster.

Diet: “Hair is made of protein built by enzymes that are activated by iron,” says Paradi Mirmirani, a dermatologist in Vallejo, California. So eat a balanced diet that includes 46 grams of protein and 18 milligrams of iron a day. (Steak, turkey, and black beans offer generous doses of both.) “The hair follicle is among the top cell-turnover sites in the body and demands many nutrients and hormones to function adequately,” says Wilma Bergfeld, a senior dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic.

Supplements: There’s no scientific proof that hair grows faster when you take in more nutrients than what is in an already healthy diet. You get more than enough of certain vitamins—for example, biotin, a B vitamin found in hair-growth supplements—simply by eating well. (Biotin is found in such common foods as eggs, avocados, and salmon.) Still, some users are convinced that hair growth supplements work (one to try: Viviscal Extra Strength Extra Strength Hair Nutrient Tablets ($40; ulta.com). If you’re eating poorly, says Fusco, the extra boost, taken as directed, might help make your hair grow faster.

Scalp treatments: Hair looks more voluminous when follicles are not blocked by dirt, dead skin cells, and product buildup. Once a week, treat your scalp to a clarifying shampoo that also moisturizes. 5. Your scalp needs extra TLC. When you do wash your hair, it’s important to focus on your scalp. Massaging your scalp with your fingertips for about three minutes a day helps to stimulate the hair follicles. To enhance the effects, apply a hair mask or conditioner to your scalp at the same time.

According to Seventeen, the mind blowing news comes courtesy of celebrity hair stylist Angela C Styles, who debunked some of the modern misconceptions surrounding the growth of our strands.

“There’s a common myth that cutting your hair will make it grow faster. That’s not necessarily true,” she says.”Cutting your hair makes it grow healthier because it removes the hair that would split. The hair at the root is able to grow and you’re able to maintain length and avoid splitting. If you allow split ends to stay on the strand, the hair will continue to split and you’ll never see the length.”

In layman’s terms, what this means is that by forgoing a necessary trim, you’re giving your (opportunist) split ends the chance to continue to split further and further up. Eventually this will snap off leaving your hair short and brittle, and never allowing it to get past a certain length.

So, regular trims will help maintain the length of your mane, BUT won’t actually increase growth. Got it? Good.

Who would have thought a scheduled trim at your hairdressers could help the overall growth of your hair? Well, according to one hair expert, doing just that can actually help the growing process of your luscious locks.

Yep, cutting your hair actually benefits the growth of it because it’s removing the dead ends, says Katie Allan, creative manager at Charles Worthington.

‘These dead ends can occur through heat, colour or chemical damage, or just because it’s old hair,’ she said.

‘If you don’t trim these ends, your hair could split and travel up the hair shaft, leaving you with dry, brittle ends and possible breakage.’

And if this happens, your hair will be getting gradually shorter and not grow to your desired length.

Plus, if you leave your split ends for too long before visiting your hairdresser; they may have to cut off much more than anticipated!

But what else can you do to help the growing process of your hair?

  • Ensure your home hair care products are professionally advised. ‘Speak with your hairdresser to see what products they recommend for your hair type,’ Katie said.
  • Invest in a good hair serum. ‘Feed your hair follicles with an extra boosting hair serum to help encourage healthy hair growth,’ she recommends.
  • Stimulate hair growth by gently massaging your scalp while washing your hair.

Does Cutting Your Hair Actually Make It Grow Faster?

My mum’s always been very blunt when it comes to hairstyles—and I don’t mean with the scissors. She’s the kindest, most genuine person I know but if your hair is too long, she’ll tell you. And I don’t mean in a subtle, “when’s the last time you had a haircut?” kind of way. Oh no. As a writer herself, she is much more descriptive. Let’s just say, there’s nothing like the word “ratty” to get you into the chair.

Growing up, she was always a fan of regular trims so as I child, I got them. And whether it came from her or not, I always believed that frequent cuts helped to stimulate hair growth. But after years of diligent haircuts in pursuit of mermaid-like hair, it turns out that this tale is actually a myth. Since hair grows from the root, not the end, cutting it won’t make it grow after all. We spoke to Monique McMahon, Director of cult hair salon, QUE Colour to find out more.

“Cutting your hair regularly actually prevents your hair from splitting on the ends, so this is what creates the illusion that your hair is growing faster. The hair is much more healthy overall,” says McMahon. “No split ends means no breakage which means longer-looking hair.”

So while cutting your hair might not make it grow faster, it’ll keep it looking healthy. By leaving your hair for too long between trims, it becomes prone to breakage and splitting. If this occurs, when you eventually get around to having it cut, you’ll have to chop it higher than previously desired. In this way, regular trims can help you to maintain longer hair but it won’t promote growth.

So, how often should you get it trimmed?

On average, hair grows around 5-6 inches per year, which is about 1/2 inch each month.

“If you have long hair and want to keep it long, I’d recommend every 8-10 weeks unless your hair is extremely fragile, then every 8 weeks you should keep it healthy and help build strength,” says McMahon. “If your hair is cut in a shorter style and you want to keep it looking sharp, you’d need it trimmed every 6 weeks.”

“We’ve just developed a new service called ‘Dusting’ which is for people wanting to trim and condition hair without affecting its overall length. Using a special scissor technique, we ‘dust’ off split ends and flyaways to leave it looking smooth, glossy and frizz free. It’s a clever little technique,” says McMahon.

And what actually helps hair to grow?

According to McMahon, it’s all about the condition you keep it in. Getting regular trims or ‘dusts’ and choosing quality products is vital. She suggests using shampoos, conditioners and styling products that are free from SLS, silicone and parabens to nourish your hair and manage its PH balance. In turn, this keeps the hair shaft smooth, full of elasticity and supple.

“Lastly, diet goes a long way in keeping hair growth on the right track. Avocado oil, coconut oil and fish oil all contribute to shiny, healthy hair and skin, as do nuts and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Make sure you get enough sleep and use silk pillow cases to keep hair smooth and glossy and prevent unnecessary breakage.”

When it comes to haircuts, there seem to be two kinds of people out there. Those who go in religiously every few weeks to keep up with the latest celeb styles (and even more for bang trims) and those who only get a chop a few times a year. Is one approach better than the other? We asked Lana Grand, celeb hairstylist and owner of Los Angeles-based salon Petite Mason for the lowdown.

So, how frequently should you cut your hair if want it to grow?

The truth is, there really is no one-size-fits-all rule. It all depends on your haircut, hair type, and whether you’re growing your hair out or just looking to maintain a certain length.

Consider taking off half an inch every 10 – 12 weeks to keep your length.

“If you enjoy having your hair long and healthy or are trying to grow it out, it’s a good idea to take off half an inch every 10 – 12 weeks,” advises Grand.

And if you just want to maintain your style…

“Then 6 – 8 weeks is as long as you might want to go without cutting your hair,” says Grand. Sporting a more blunt ‘do, like a bob with bangs? You may find you have to go in even sooner to keep it looking precise and polished.

Does trimming hair help it grow?

We all know by now that frequent hair trims do not, in fact, make hair grow faster. Whether you cut it or not, your hair will grow at the same rate. That said, because split ends can make the hair appear scraggly and thin, regular trims do go a long way in keeping strands strong and healthy-looking, which can help you achieve your goal length, explains Grand.

“Once a hair strand splits at the end, the damage will only progress. Left untouched, a split end will continue all the way up the hair shaft, damaging the entire strand beyond repair,” she warns. “So, even though regular trims won’t make your hair grow faster they will absolutely help to eliminate the thing that prevents length retention.”

Signs it’s time for a trim:

Your hairstylist can help you determine your ideal cutting schedule, but you might want to get in earlier if:

You have split ends. This is the most obvious sign you’re in need of a chop. Ideally, though, Grand advises you’d get a haircut before split ends start happening since that’s a sure-fire sign your hair is in need of some TLC.

Your hair has lost its shape. If your once-bouncy mane is falling limp or your layers seem to blend together, it’s time to make an appointment.

Your ends are super dry. The ends of your hair are naturally going to be dryer than hair closer to the root simply because the hair is older, but if things start to look a little straw-like, then you’re likely fried from over-processing. Not even the best deep conditioning treatment will turn this ship around—it’s time for a trim.

What about hair vitamins? Do they work?

On average, human hair grows about half an inch every month. How fast your hair grows—it could be slightly above or slightly below that average—will depend on your genetics, diet, hormones, and a little thing called stress.

“People tend to look for that miracle shampoo or vitamin, but if you really want to optimize your hair health—always start by looking within,” she says. “Get some sleep, eat a balanced diet rich with vitamins B, A, C, D, Iron and Zinc, and make sure your hormones, thyroid, liver are functioning at optimal level.” And, don’t forget the heat protectant products to help avoid damage.
