Featherweight t3 hair dryer

Featherweight Compact Hair Dryer

Straight from the shower it took a maximum of 5 minutes to dry my hair using the T3. From dripping wet to bone dry – 5 minutes! Seriously! It is also fairly quiet to use.

The Science

T3 Tourmaline® SoftAire™: Fast = Healthy = Beautiful. Regular dryers use a hurricane-like, chaotic windflow which can damage the cuticle and cause split ends, frizz and flyaways. T3 Featherweight Dryers work differently.

A specially engineered fan generates a high volume of ion-enriched air that exits the dryer in a wide cone shape at a soft, gentle speed that allows you to dry large sections of hair – fast. Negative ions in the airflow cancel static and quickly seal the cuticle, which helps hair retain natural moisture, reduces frizz and enhances shine.

The Fabulous

  • 2 Speeds/Heat Settings perfectly style all hair types and textures.
  • Cool Shot helps lock in any style for a smooth, sleek finish.
  • Folding Handle for convenient storage.
  • Healthier Than Air Drying as T3 Tourmaline® SoftAire™ Technology is proven to reduce Frizz and increase body, shine, comb-ability and style retention.
  • Switchable Dual Voltage for easy international use (plug adapter needed).

Featherweight Compact Folding Dryer

I travel a lot and finally decided to bite the bullet and start building a complete set of travel toiletries and tools always ready to go in my suitcase so I only have to pack clothes for a trip. It has made life so much more convenient. Recently, I bought this hairdryer for my travel kit. Objectively, it’s not a bad hair dryer, but I’m unhappy with it because it isn’t powerful enough. I should have known that this hair dryer wouldn’t suit my needs when I saw that it was a 1200W hair dryer (I use a 2200W R Session hair dryer at home). However, I’m still taking two lippies off because the concentrator nozzle falls off too easily and I think a "professional" hair dryer should be at least 1875W with a lower setting for damaged or fine hair. T3 tries to justify the lack of power by marketing this product as a "healthy" hair dryer which uses a "specially-engineered fan generates a high volume of air and weaves it through the dryer at a soft, gentle speed, enriching it with negative ions and far infrared heat. The enriched airflow exits the dryer in a wide cone shape that dries large sections of hair-fast." After using the dryer, I think this is all BS. I can’t speak for the long-term health of my hair, but I do know that it takes FOREVER to dry my hair with this hair dryer, and even when it’s dry, I can’t get the salon quality results I get with my dryer at home. This hair dryer costs $150. You’re paying for a couple things: The T3 brand, the long-lasting AC motor, dual voltage option, ceramic and tourmaline heating elements, ionic technology, a two-year limited warranty, well placed controls, compact size, light weight, and a folding handle. All these qualities together are very difficult to find in a travel dryer, which I think partly, but not entirely, justifies the price. Unfortunately, at 1200W, this dryer is still too low power for my curly, thick, long hair, even with the "specially engineered fan" or whatever. If it was at least 1875W it would be perfect. If you have short, thin, or very brittle hair you will probably love this dryer, even if you don’t love the price. You might also like the low air flow if you only use hair dryers to style your bangs and lots of power is actually detrimental. However, for me, this dryer is not enough. On my next domestic trip, I will be packing my regular dryer.

Newsflash: not all hair dryers are created equal. You might think you can use any old tool and your hair won’t know the difference, but as we learned when Dyson launched its Supersonic hair dryer in 2016, some really are better than others. The Supersonic, which is packed with the same vacuum tech other Dyson applicances are known for, rings in at just under $500—and people rave about it.

When we found out T3, one of our fave makers of hot tools, was launching a new hair dryer, we decided to see how it measures up against the Supersonic. Five editors here at FLARE, Hello! Canada and Chatelaine evaluated each dryer based on things like dry time, weight and functionality to determine which of the two is worth your hard-earned bucks.

The Tester Team

Below, you’ll see feedback from Emily, who has fine, colour-treated chin-length hair; Prescylla, who describes her hair as “full, kinky, and curly”; Mishal, whose thick, shiny hair runs half way down her back; Nezariel, who says she has fine, curly (sometimes frizzy), chin-length hair; and Tara, who has fine, shoulder-length hair.

T3 Cura Luxe Hair Dryer

Specs: This black and rose-gold dryer launched just last month, and it’s powered by T3’s DigitalIon Air Technology, which the company says delivers a faster dry and smoother, shinier hair. It also has a volume booster switch, five digital heat settings, two speed settings and a cool-shot button. Its most innovative feature is the auto pause sensor—the dryer automatically turns off when you let go of the handle. (No more burned inner thighs when you hold it between your legs!)

Price: $320 at sephora.com

Weight: “It’s more ergonomically friendly and lightweight than its predecessor,” says Mishal. But, if we’re comparing it to the Dyson (which we are, obvi), it’s definitely the heavier of the two.

Attachments: The nozzles knocked this dryer down a notch for most of us, since they were tough to lock in and then remove. “Getting the attachments on was a mess,” says Prescylla. “It took me about ten minutes because the one I chose just wouldn’t seem to fit. I also wanted to turn the nozzle to make the air flow in a different direction, but couldn’t get it to do that.”

Function: The T3 has a ton of settings, including the aforementioned volume-boosting switch, which removes the smoothing ions and helps your hair get to its fullest. “The volume booster switch really sets this dryer apart as it gave my hair some extra oomph and is a totally unique feature,” says Emily. “And, let’s be real, the dryer design is chic af, you just feel fancy using it!” That said, some of us found the auto shut-off a little frustrating. It’s great if you’re setting it down a lot during styling, but sometimes a subtle finger shift can stop the airflow, and it takes a few seconds to heat up again when it starts.

Dry time: Three and a half minutes for Tara, four minutes for Emily, 17 minutes for Nezariel, 20 minutes for Mishal, and three hours for Prescylla.

Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer

Specs: Built with a digital motor just like its Dyson vacuum and fan cousins, this Insta-famous dryer provides a high pressure, focused stream of air that dries hair super fast. It has four heat settings, three airflow settings, a cold-shot button and an ionizer. According to Dyson’s research, it’s six times faster than the average hair dryer—and a third of the weight.

Price: $499 at thebay.com

Weight: Most of us found the Supersonic relatively light, and evenly balanced since the heaviest part (the motor) is in the handle. “My bird arms get weirdly tired if I’m holding any kind of hair tool for too long, and that definitely did not happen with this dryer,” says Tara. “For the amount of power it has, it was surprisingly lightweight.”

Attachments: The Supersonic comes with two smoothing attachments and one diffuser. “Getting the attachments on the Dyson was very easy,” says Prescylla. “They’re magnetic, so they literally just popped right on with no issues, and I really liked how I could easily change the position of the attachments to make the air flow in different directions.”

Function: The shape of the Supersonic makes it easy to maneuver around your head (and it’s so much easier to fit in a suitcase!). It also doesn’t have a back vent, which means you don’t have to worry about your hair getting sucked in and caught in a tangled mess (one of Mishal’s biggest fears). According to four of the testers, it’s easy to switch between heat settings, and never overwhelming since it only has two buttons. Nezariel had other feels: “The Dyson was hard to control while also trying to brush out my locks,” she says. “Sure, navigating the buttons, adjustments and smoothing attachments was a breeze, but actually getting this bad boy to stay comfortably in my hand while drying? It didn’t work for me.”

Dry time: Three minutes for Emily and Tara, 20 minutes for Mishal, 30 minutes for Nezariel, and one and a half hours for Prescylla.

And the winner is… The T3 Cura Luxe!

Majority rules, and Emily, Tara and Nezariel all picked T3’s latest dryer. But, take note: they all have finer hair. If you’ve got a thick mane and you’re looking for something that’ll dry it as fast as possible, go with the Dyson—it was the winner for Mishal and Prescylla.

This blow dryer uses science to make hair smoother, healthier, and shinier — and it’s the only one I’ve ever enjoyed using

I cannot say that I was blessed with great hair.

There is a lot of it (quantity), but in terms of grading for frizz, smoothness, or ease of styling (quality), I score pretty low. It seems the cosmic trade for a lifetime of fearing humidity and over-using hot tools, though, is not having wisdom teeth — so who am I to complain?

On top of the mounds of unruly hair is also an unwillingness to spend on luxury items — even when there is a clear argument for value over time, like expensive but better products that protect your hair’s health — I still have a hard time putting money into something I don’t absolutely need and can’t verify is worth its big price tag before I buy.

So in the interest of like-minded shoppers, I should tell you that: In my experience, compared to all other hair drying options I’ve used, the T3 Featherweight Luxe 2i works best and also follows through on its impressive claims. So if that’s worth $250 to you (fast, quiet drying that leaves hair shinier, less frizzy, and feeling healthier), then you’ll be getting what you expect. If you don’t find it works as well for you as it did for me, you can return it and continue the search.

To be short, it miraculously dries my hair without infusing it with frizz, dries all of it on a much more equal pacing than others (my ends aren’t dead and dry 4 minutes before the middle), and it makes my hair feel strong and healthy afterward. It’s also supposed to be healthier for your hair than air drying it.

When it comes to hair, the short-term and inexpensive options have a high and lasting impact. Your hair grows pretty slowly (an average person can grow between less than 1 inch to 4 inches every two months), and damaged hair can make your life a lot harder during the years you’re waiting for the deadened sections of your hot tools-dependent college years to slowly grow out far enough to be lopped off. Even if you’re waiting for that, you can’t just say sorry and hang on until those bits grow out — you have to change your habits immediately if you want to replace them with healthier hair rather than more of the (brittle) same. Otherwise, you’ll never get out of the cycle. It’s not a game designed for you to win; the more damaged your hair, the harder it seems to control, the more you rely on hot tools, and the more you damage your hair.

So recently, I’ve been investing in nicer hair care products so that in the spring of 2020, the hair I grow now can replace the hair I naively killed years earlier. Products like It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In, Living Proof Overnight Perfector, ORIBE shampoo and conditioner, and the Aquis hair turban have been my standouts, but the T3 deserves its own showcasing because it is so different from other options.

I picked the Luxe 2i for a few reasons: It had won Allure’s Best of Beauty Awards in 2013 (its predecessor, the T3 Featherweight, won four of them), it’s an ionic, tourmaline blow dryer that also utilizes ceramic technology, and it’s supposed to be healthier for your hair than if you let it air dry.

What do ionic, tourmaline, and ceramic mean?

Ionic: emits negative ions that break up water globs in your hair and lets them evaporate faster. The result is less time using the dryer, which means less prep time and less exposure to heat, with ultimately better results. It reduces your hair’s “surface tension,” which should leave hair shiny and less frizzy.

Ceramic: emits non-damaging infrared heat that is meant to penetrate the hair’s shaft to keep the hair’s moisture and shine intact. It can be used pretty much anywhere on the dryer (coating or even the full body).

Tourmaline: is a semi-precious mineral that also emits negative ions when heated. When used well in a blow dryer, it’s “crushed into a fine powder and transferred to the major components of the appliance,” and they work with ionic power to maximize all those negative ions headed toward your wet hair, as well as closing the cuticle layer so your hair is smooth. Because it’s somewhat rare, blow dryers with this mineral can be pretty pricey.

How is it healthier for your hair than air drying?

The Luxe 2i’s engine is super powerful and churns out a lot more heat energy than other options. Translation: It will dry your hair too fast for it to sustain damage. And thanks to all the fancy technology in it, your strands are actually better protected than if you had let it air dry.

Cosmetic chemist Jim Hammer backed this up when he called the dryer a “game-changer” and told Allure that “you really will find that hair is healthier than if you allowed it to air-dry. In fact, because there is so much more heat in the air that is being pushed out of the dryer than other models I’ve seen, the smoothness and shine should last longer than if you used a regular dryer, too.”

Amazon

So when it comes to styling your hair and also growing a healthier crop, the T3 Luxe 2i meant I need not choose — I could have my cake (healthy hair soon) and eat it, too (good-looking hair now). It was the perfect way to cheat the losing game. And since hair is at its most vulnerable when wet, this change also has a higher impact compared to the rest of the habits I’ve changed.

When I’ve used other , I’ve ended up looking like a witch at an elementary school play, with lots of “is that crimped?” volume in every direction. As a result, I hated using them. This hair dryer is the only one I have ever tried that does not make me look that way. This is valuable to me, even if it took much longer to dry or was heavier to hold or sounded louder (none of which I found to be true, though it isn’t as featherlight as some options I’ve tried). In my experience, it has also been very quiet while also gently drying, and I appreciate the (pretty standard) cool-shot to further reduce frizz.

It’s also worth noting that there are other great options out there and much of your experience is dependent upon your own quirky, personal hair. However, this is the best hair dryer I have ever tried, and plenty of other people seem to love it, too. It’s a luxury item and definitely expensive, but between $30 options (or even some $150 options I’ve personally tried) and the $400 revolutionary Dyson, this is an in-between option that really delivers on its promises. It also comes with a useful two-and-a-half-inch round, tourmaline-coated and vented brush.

So if you’re comfortable with dropping some money on an investment in healthier hair and/or have had mixed luck with blow-drying and frizz in the past, I really recommend looking into this one specifically.

Healthier than air-drying

Powered by proprietary T3 Tourmaline® and advanced SoftAire™ technology, the Featherweight 2 dries your hair faster for great results.

With a sleek new design inspired by fashion trends, an ergonomic, tilted handle and weight balanced shape, the Featherweight 2 is as beautiful to look at as it is to hold. Experience the Science of Fabulous every time you blowdry.

SoftAire™: The Beauty of Speed

Regular dryers can take 30 minutes to dry hair, using a hurricane-like airflow that causes damage, frizz and flyaways. Featherweight Dryers work differently, drying hair in an average of just 7 minutes.

T3’s advanced SoftAire Technology generates a greater volume of air and weaves it through the dryer at the ideal heat and speed. The ion-enriched air then exits the dryer in a wide cone shape that dries larger sections of hair at a time, faster and healthier.

T3 Tourmaline®: The Secret to Healthy Drying

Tourmaline is known as the “electric stone” because when heated, it emits negative ions and healthy infrared heat. Negative ions speed up drying by breaking water droplets into smaller molecules, retaining healthy moisture. At the same time, they cancel static and seal the cuticle.

T3’s proprietary Tourmaline infusion process

Many other Tourmaline applications only spray a coating of Tourmaline which wears off over time. Tourmaline-infused components, the T3 patented process, keep their benefits forever.

Infused ionic and infrared benefits are much stronger than with coated applications” takes the highest quality gemstones and crushes them into a fine powder that is infused into the internal dryer components. Unlike other dryers that have just a spray coating of Tourmaline that wears off, the healthy-hair benefits of T3 tools last the products’ lifetime.

I loved the look the T3 gave me — and it led me to believe that maybe my hair wasn’t so difficult to style after all. I just needed to invest in some higher quality hair tools to help give my thin hair a boost. And by cutting down drying time I can spend some extra minutes styling.
