David Ross is in the ‘Dancing With the Stars’ semifinals after a ‘Gangsta’s Paradise’ gladiator bit

By Adrian Garro May 8, 2017

David Ross’ storybook year has extended well past his role in the Cubs’ World Series run last fall. A heralded celebrity participant on this season of “Dancing With the Stars,” Ross and his dancing partner Lindsay Arnold have made it to the semifinals after some spirited performances that touched on everything from ’90s nostalgia to “Magic Mike.”
With just a handful of dance teams remaining on Monday night’s episode, team #LadyAndTheGramp turned up the heat for “Trios Night,” which they did with a spirited waltz set to the tune of Tim McGraw’s “Humble and Kind”:

Next up, Ross, Arnold and Hayley Erbert donned gladiator garb and struck some serious faces for their next act, a themed trio performance set to the theatrical “Gangsta’s Paradise”:

The above performances were all Ross and Arnold needed on the night, as by the time the votes were officially cast and counted, they persevered — punching a ticket to the semifinals in the process:

Dancing With the Stars pro Jenna Johnson is blogging exclusively with Us Weekly about her quest to take home the season 27 Mirrorball Trophy with partner Joe Amabile!

Jenna Johnson and Joe Amabile

This week was an awesome week for both Joe and myself. First, we had a dedication dance and this was my favorite moment from the season – the process of learning the contemporary dance. We dedicated it to the women in his life – his grandmother, his mom and Kendall . It was really special moment. During these rehearsals, we solidified this lifelong friendship. We really bonded and trust each other. I think Joe performed it the best he’s ever done it and it was one of my favorite moments I’ve done on the show. It was such a beautiful song that I’ve wanted to do for years and I just loved it.

We also had a judges’ choice dance. Our judge was Carrie Ann Inaba and I couldn’t have been happier that we had Carrie Ann. I feel like she’s been on our side this whole completion. She had some great insight for Joe, not just with his dancing but with his overall presence, with his emotions and his feelings when he’s dancing. I don’t know what she said to him but it just clicked. I loved that moment that we got to share together with her because it was like she really understood.

She talked a lot about his breathing and his intentions, and think that’s something he’s been lacking. As many times I can say it to him, coming from a judge, specifically Carrie Ann, it just clicked. He took it to heart. I think that’s something he used was his breath and his intention. He was looking sharp and he was smooth throughout it. Carrie Ann is smart and knew what he needed to know and what he needed to work on.

Joe is a great student and he listens. It was really awesome to redeem ourselves in the quick step. The last time we did quick step was week one and he legit, half way through, messed up the whole steps, got off beat and we couldn’t finish it. We got a four. In 10 seasons, I had never seen a four. To see him come back and improve so much, and even feeling the way he danced it as his partner, he was one million times better tonight. I would love to see a side by side of the dances. I think that would be freaking brilliant to see the direct improvement, even with the way he carried himself. The first week, he was so timid and scared and fearful and this week, I feel like he wanted to conquer it.

Obviously, it’s sad to go but I am so happy right now, I think just because of what a great night we ended on. I wouldn’t want to end any other way. In general, Joe is an awkward, goofy introverted person. I think my personality, obviously is very loud and out there. I have no reservations, so I think it was a good balance to bring out this funny side of Joe. Slowly but surely he opened up more and more.

My Final Takeaway

Every partner you get is so different, you learn a lot from each of them. I think the thing I learned the most from Joe is patience. I had to learn his learning process and it made me a better person because my worst quality has always been my patience. I’m a perfectionist and want things to be done now. This was a great opportunity for me to breathe through the process and help somebody else but to want the best for them and to do it in a slow, but patient way.

I want to end with exciting news! I am going on tour with my fiancé and a bunch of awesome Dancing With the Stars pros on the Dancing With the Stars: Live tour. Our first show is December 15. It’s going to be an epic experience.

Dancing With the Stars airs on ABC Mondays at 8 p.m. ET.

DWTS Pro Jenna Johnson Freaks Out When She’s Introduced to Grocery Store Joe Amabile

Among the Bachelor Nation audience members who will be rooting for Grocery Store Joe Amabile on Dancing with the Stars is none other than his pro dancing partner, Jenna Johnson.

In PEOPLE’s exclusive sneak peek at the moment Amabile was introduced to Johnson, she freaks out when he walks through the door and she learns that she’ll be dancing alongside him for season 27.

“Oh my gosh, Grocery Store Joe!” says an elated Johnson, 24.

But Amabile warns her that he has no experience in the ballroom.

“Oh, you’re excited, huh? Don’t be that excited,” he tells her as they share an embrace. “I don’t know how to dance.”

Reflecting on her adorable freak-out moment, Johnson admits, “I’m so embarrassed because I just fan-girled so hard, and he doesn’t even know who I am.”

After collecting herself, Johnson gives Amabile a warm handshake and officially introduces herself: “I’m Jenna. Hi, I’m sorry, you’re Joe. I’m such a fan.”

And now that he’s said goodbye to his Bachelorette and Bachelor in Paradise days and hello to dancing, he wants to get rid of his Bachelor Nation moniker.

“We gotta lose that nickname,” he says of being called Grocery Store Joe. “I want to be Dancing Joe now! That’s it. We gotta change it up!”

After it was announced that Amabile, who is dating his Bachelor in Paradise love Kendall Long, was joining DWTS, he opened up to PEOPLE about why he signed on to the reality dancing competition series.

“It’s a good opportunity. Why not do it?” he said.

“I don’t know how to dance. I don’t remember the last season I saw but it was probably a couple years ago. If I watch now, I’ll psych myself out. It will be really bad. I’ll probably be throwing up,” he added.

While being in front of cameras — and a live audience — might intimidate some, Amabile is more concerned about remembering his footing.

“The live audience is the least of my worries. That part I don’t mind,” he said. “It’s the actual dancing part!”

Catch Amabile on the Dancing with the Stars season 27 premiere on Monday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

  • Bachelor in Paradise alum Jordan Kimball joined Joe Amabile on Dancing with the Stars Monday night.
  • Kimball suffered a minor wardrobe malfunction during their performance to to Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy.”
  • The dance was therapeutic for Kimball, who ended his engagement with Jenna Cooper earlier this month.

Dancing with the Stars contestant “Grocery Store” Joe Amabile of Bachelor in Paradise recruited fellow Bachelor in Paradise alum Jordan Kimball to join him on the dance floor Monday night for season 27’s Trio Night.

They salsa danced in white tank tops and denim overalls alongside Amabile’s pro partner, Jenna Johnson, to Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy.” Which, of course, was a very appropriate choice, since Kimball frequently bragged about his good looks on BiP and never passed up an opportunity to mention his career as a Wilhelmina model.

Alas, the sexy routine was disrupted when Kimball suffered a slight wardrobe malfunction. As Johnson twirled around the reality TV star studs, Amabile successfully ripped off his tank to reveal his very fit physique, while Kimball couldn’t quite get his shirt off.

Instead, he let it flop by his side.

Kimball played off the mishap with a smile and the trio ended their Magic Mike-esque dance (complete with gyrations and smoldering stares into the camera), by standing under a shower on the stage and shaking their wet hair.

They scored a 15 out of 30, with judge Bruno Tonioli calling it a “unique experience.”

“I have no idea if I was watching Magic Mike, Tragic Mike, Michael the Mechanics,” he said of the performance.

Despite receiving the lowest scores of the evening, Amabile told Entertainment Tonight that they “had a lot of fun,” adding, “I thought it was good!”

“We put in work and we got soaked,” Kimball told ET. “If that performance didn’t bring a smile to your face, you’re not a happy person.”

The dance number was also therapeutic for Kimball, who ended his engagement with Jenna Cooper earlier this month, less than 24 hours after the Bachelor in Paradise finale aired on ABC.

“You know, you gotta show people that the best thing to do whenever you’re going through a rough time is to go to your friends and try to get out there and bust a move,” he told ET before appearing on DWTS. “So right now, Dancing With the Stars is very relevant in my life. I’m a big Saturday Night Fever kind of guy, and that’s what we’re bringing to you this Monday.”
