The Real Reason Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin Divorced

When it comes to celebrities who know how to make heads turn with their strange habits and even odder life advice, Gwyneth Paltrow is top of mind. She used to be the beautiful and soft-spoken actress known for her work in Hollywood over her lifestyle brand, Goop. But since the launch of her brand and her website, fans have flocked to Goop to see what off-the-wall venture Paltrow would be up to next.

Goop aside, Paltrow is also known for something else — and that was her high-profile marriage to Coldplay frontman, Chris Martin. The two seemed like a perfect match for years, so when the day came when Paltrow announced their separation on her website, fans were shocked. Here’s what went wrong for the couple.

Paltrow was reportedly Martin’s first serious girlfriend

According to Yahoo, Paltrow met Martin backstage at a Coldplay concert in 2002, and they hit it off immediately. While Paltrow had dated plenty of celebrities, like Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck, Martin went on later to say that Paltrow was his first serious girlfriend he ever had. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he mentioned, “Being married to someone very successful and very powerful basically keeps you hungry to improve. You’ve got to be hungry. If your wife went out with Brad Pitt, you’d want to prove yourself, you know what I mean?”

As for why the two got along so well for so long, Paltrow chalked it up to having a ton in common with her spouse. “We laugh a lot, and at the same jokes,” Yahoo says she told InStyle. She also said the two of them liked the same music and could easily find a hobby to do together because of their similarities. But it wasn’t always easy, as Paltrow also noted that their artistic temperaments could be difficult to navigate around each other.

Two children brought along new challenges for the couple

It wasn’t long before the couple decided to have children, and in December 2003, the first pregnancy announcement was released. Paltrow and Martin married just days later in California and prepared for their first daughter to arrive, whom they controversially named Apple. In 2006, they had a son together whom they named Moses.

Today notes Paltrow felt elated after the birth of her daughter, but her experience with her son was much different. She experienced postpartum depression, which caused her to go “into a dark place.” She told Good Housekeeping, “I felt like a zombie. I couldn’t access my heart. I couldn’t access my emotions. I couldn’t connect.”

Her husband was the one who brought her changing attitude to her attention. But many think the stress of a new baby and Paltrow’s ailing mental health definitely put a strain on their marriage.

Distance and busy schedules were a huge cause of a rift

There’s nothing that ruins romance like busyness — and when you’re a Hollywood star and a touring musician, it’s easy to get lost in scheduling. According to People, this was a huge reason as to why the two chose to end their marriage. The two had homes in London and Los Angeles, but their competing schedules made it tough for them to accomplish much altogether as a family.

During tough times in their marriage, a source close to Paltrow told People that they tried to make things work, but they found it was best to split. “They have worked really hard for a year or more, going to therapy, trying to make it work – and she’s been more honest than ever about how hard marriage is – but they just decided it was best to not be together anymore as a couple,” the source said.

The two are still on excellent terms

In May 2014, Paltrow posted her breakup announcement to Goop. “We have been working hard for well over a year, some of it together, some of it separated, to see what might have been possible between us, and we have come to the conclusion that while we love each other very much we will remain separate,” she wrote. Though fans knew their marriage had been difficult, the public was still crushed. And Daily Mail Online reports Martin was feeling quite down about the divorce, too — though after a year of thinking, he was able to come to terms with the separation and remain great friends with Paltrow.

“It’s funny. I don’t think about that word very often- divorce. I don’t see it that way. I see it more like you meet someone, you have some time together and things just move through,” Martin said. As for Paltrow, she called the separation a “conscious uncoupling” and mentioned she still views her, Martin, and their two kids as a family.

When Gwyneth Paltrow announced her separation from Coldplay front man Chris Martin last year, the Oscar winner famously packaged the breakup as a “conscious uncoupling“—a term that was so widely mocked that the actress and Goop founder felt the need to distance herself from the phrase this summer. Regardless of who coined it, though, the ill-fated annulment euphemism suggested an air of superiority—as if the actress and her husband were so evolved and advanced in understanding relationship matters, that, well, they had the sophisticated lexicon to prove it. While participating in a Q&A recently, though, Paltrow admitted to a complete stranger that, regardless of what she called the split on her Web site, she considered it a personal failure.

This past weekend, Paltrow was speaking at a Pearl xChange event hosted by Nicole Richie when she was asked what in her life didn’t turn out the way she had anticipated.

“My marriage,” Paltrow answered bluntly, according to People, even though she could have easily offered any vague, generic reference to a failed film project or Goop recipe. Instead, she explained, “I am from a tribe of people who stay married. My parents stayed married until my dad died.”

“I really don’t come from a culture of divorce at all, and I had very high hopes for what my life could be,” she said of her marriage, which lasted 10 years and produced two children, daughter Apple and son Moses.

“I think that it was very difficult for me that I couldn’t do that and that I wasn’t able to be married to the father of my children for the rest of my life,” she continued. “It was very challenging for me in terms of having to re-assess what that said about me, ideas that I had about that kind of failure.”

Paltrow added that she feels fortunate, even if the marriage did not work out, because “my ex-husband is an incredibly good ex-husband and an amazing dad.”

Earlier this week, Martin spoke just as candidly about the disappointment he felt following the divorce.

“A few years ago I was in a low place in my life and was feeling kind of down and confused,” the confessed on an Australian radio show. “Some friends gave me a book called Man’s Search for Meaning, and a poem called ‘The Guest House’ by an Afghanistani poet, teacher, and those two things started me off on this whole journey that’s ended up a few years later now where I just feel so happy to be alive.”

Both Martin and his wife have seemingly moved on to new romantic relationships—Martin with actress Annabelle Wallis, and Paltrow with producer Brad Falchuk.

  • Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow wished her first husband (and Coldplay frontman) Chris Martin a happy 42nd birthday on Instagram yesterday.
  • Part of her caption read, “We love you so much.”
  • On Saturday, Paltrow also wished her current husband, producer, and American Horror Story co-creator, Bryan Falchuk a happy 48th birthday on Instagram.

It looks like the “conscious uncoupling” of Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin really is one of the most civilized splits in Hollywood.

The Oscar-winning actress gave her Grammy-winning ex-husband a birthday shoutout on Instagram yesterday. “Happy Birthday CAJM. This is a special one. We love you so much. #42,” she sweetly captioned their selfie. While Paltrow’s face was partially cut off in the ‘gram, the number 42, Martin’s age, was perfectly in frame.

Paltrow and Martin tied the knot in 2003 and announced their separation in 2014. The dissolution of their marriage gained widespread attention when they publicized their “conscious uncoupling” on Goop, Paltrow’s lifestyle website. “We have always conducted our relationship privately, and we hope that as we consciously uncouple and coparent, we will be able to continue in the same manner,” their joint statement read. In 2016, People confirmed the two finalized their divorce.

TMZ and E! News both reported that Paltrow attended Martin’s birthday party at his home in Malibu over the weekend. According to the publications, Julia Roberts, Sean Penn, Jeremy Allen White (Lip on Shameless), and Melanie Griffith (mother of Martin’s reported girlfriend Dakota Johnson) were all in attendance at the fete. E! News added that there were a mariachi band and a taco cart at his celebration.

Last year, for Martin’s 41st birthday, the Goop founder also gave her ex-husband well wishes. Paltrow posted an adorable photograph of the pair, plus their two children Apple and Moses Martin on the beach. “Happy birthday my brother. Thank you for giving me these two. 💖,” she wrote at the time.

Martin isn’t the only man in Paltrow’s life who recently celebrated their birthday. Her current husband, Brad Falchuk, who frequently collaborates with Ryan Murphy (Glee, Scream Queens, American Horror Story, and Pose), turned 48 on March 2. Naturally, Paltrow showed her man some love on social media. She shared a selfie with Falchuck at what appears to be a backyard celebration.

“It’s your birthday, but it’s really feels like you are the gift. Not just to me, and to @izzyfalchuk and Brody, but to all of us who are fortunate enough to know and love you. You are my rock, my true north, my favorite person to eat with, to travel with. You are a true friend. You want only what is for the highest good. You always help me see what I can’t. I am so happy you were born @bradfalchuk I love you so much. ❤️,” she wrote.

Falchuk and Paltrow wed in September 2018 with a “fairy-tale” wedding in the Hamptons. Steven Spielberg, Cameron Diaz and her husband Benji Madden, Jerry Seinfeld, Rob Lowe, Robert Downey Jr., and Gwyneth’s mother, actress Blythe Danner, were all in attendance at their ceremony.

The Oscar-winning actress and healthy lifestyle juggernaut Gwyneth Paltrow’s houses are just as beautiful as you’d expect. During her marriage to Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, Paltrow lived in north London’s chi-chi Belsize Park and had a $10 million penthouse in Manhattan on the side. Since their ‘conscious uncoupling’ in 2015, the purveyor of all things expensive and good for you has taken up residence back in her native USA, with a sprawling mansion in Brentwood, Califonia, and a charming estate in the Hamptons (where she recently married the TV producer Brad Falchuk). Given her penchant for sleek, simple, minimalist clothes and the similar aesthetic of her GOOP blog and shop, we’re not surprised to see that her houses are done out in pale colours, clean lines, and luxurious fittings. Gwyneth Paltrow is happily married to Brad Falchuk, but she still believes she and ex Chris Martin were “meant to be together.”

In a new interview with the UK’s Evening Standard, the 46-year-old actress opened up about her bond with the Coldplay frontman — with whom she famously agreed to “consciously uncouple” back in 2014 after 10 years of marriage.

“Family structure can be reinvented and divorce doesn’t have to be devastating,” Paltrow told the outlet. “It doesn’t have to be the end of your relationship with somebody.”

She and Paltrow have remained close friends since their split, co-parenting daughter Apple, 14, and son Moses, 12.

“I think Chris and I were meant to be together and have our kids,” Paltrow said. “But our relationship is much better like this: friends and co-parents and family.”

Though Paltrow and Martin are strong now, splitting up wasn’t easy.

In the documentary, Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams, Martin, 41, said going their separate ways left him “completely worthless” and feeling as though he was “nothing to anybody.”

“I was just like, ‘I’m a mess,’ really, because I can’t enjoy the great things around me,” he explained. “I went through a breakup with Gwyneth — listen, I’m never going to moan, I’m grateful for everything, but it was pretty touch and go.”

Paltrow has also described their split as “a difficult time in our lives.”

“As anybody who has been divorced knows, you have to put a lot aside to maintain the family and the practicalities of what that might mean and sometimes that’s quite tough on a personal level,” Paltrow said in 2016. “It’s a commitment I make every day to my children and their father even though we’re not in a romantic relationship.”

“You can remain a family even though you are not a couple and make it a less traumatic experience for the children,” she continued.

Meanwhile, both moved on to new relationships. He’s been dating actress Dakota Johnson, 29, while Paltrow, 46, married producer Falcuk, 47, in September.

All were together, save for Johnson, on Paltrow’s “big family honeymoon over Christmas,” she said on Live with Kelly and Ryan. “So, my new husband and his children, my children, my ex-husband, our best family friends (all went),” Paltrow recalled. “It was a very modern honeymoon.”

And as for the “conscious uncoupling” term, Paltrow has learned to have fun with it.

“I unwittingly created a whole sort of hoopla with my choice of words,” Paltrow joked to Today in 2016. “It wasn’t my words actually – I was sort of following a theory but it was a very intense time for our family and emotions were very high and deep and all over the place, so I just tried to keep to myself as much as possible.”

Martin was famously married to Gwyneth Paltrow, with whom he has two children: Apple and Moses. The exes co-parent their children and the British singer could not be more proud of his kids. After splitting from Paltrow, Chris has been linked to women including Jennifer Lawrence, Kate Bosworth, and Natalie Imbruglia. Obviously, none of these relationships lasted, and the British singer fell head-over-heels with Johnson.

Johnson has reportedly dated Benedict Cumberbatch, Matthew Hitt, and Jordan Masterson, among others.

Are Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson the real deal?

Fans can bet that they certainly are. It is said that Martin and Johnson couldn’t be happier with each other and couldn’t be more in love. They don’t flaunt their relationship, going so far as to keep it hidden from the world for quite some time. They just enjoy being with each other privately and don’t feel the need to share details with anyone. It is wonderful to see a celebrity couple who choose to go their own way and not have to worry about being in the spotlight!

Martin has been private in most of his relationships, rarely embracing photo opportunities, even when he was married. He has made it clear that although he is a celebrity, he does not feel the need to live his private life in front of the cameras, and apparently, Johnson agrees! They enjoy keeping to themselves, doing things that are low-key, and living a mostly quiet life. We can certainly understand that.

Are Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson engaged?

Not yet! The fact that Martin and Johnson are so happy together may leave many fans wondering why she isn’t already sporting an impressive, sparkling ring on her finger. As it turns out, Martin was simply respecting his ex-wife, Gwyneth, who married to Brad Falchuk in September 2018. He didn’t want to overshadow her exciting day or make things too overwhelming for his children.

Are Chris Martin and Dakota Johnson getting married soon?

All of the signs are pointing to the reality that they may be one of the next couples to announce their engagement. There is even some speculation that they could already secretly be engaged, and given how private they are, we wouldn’t be surprised if they are, in fact, keeping it under wraps for the time being. While we have not yet seen a ring on Johnson’s finger, only time will tell what will actually happen. However, the couple is obviously going in that direction, and we would love nothing more than to see them commit to each other for the rest of their lives. Fans all over the world would be overcome with joy if this were to happen, and we can only guess that it may be soon!

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin are living proof that couples can stay friendly after a painful split.

Now, Paltrow’s getting candid about the special friendship she shares with the Coldplay singer’s current girlfriend, Dakota Johnson.

“I love her,” the Oscar winner and Goop founder revealed in the February issue of Harper’s Bazaar.

“I can see how it would seem weird because it’s sort of unconventional. But I think, in this case, just having passed through it iteratively, I just adore her,” she added.

“I always start to think of the ampersand sign — what else can you bring in, instead of being resistant to or being made insecure by? There’s so much juice in leaning in to something like that,” she said.

Johnson, 30, and Martin, 42, were first linked in October 2017, more than three years after Martin split with Paltrow, 47, in a process they described as “conscious uncoupling.”

From the start, Paltrow, who shares two children with the musician, has gone out of her way to make his new love feel respected and included, even gushing about her to the press and sharing a sweet birthday tribute to her in October.

As for her own love life, Paltrow revealed in August that she and new husband Brad Falchuk had finally gotten around to moving in together after nearly a year of marriage.

“So our sex life is over,” she joked in the Harper’s Bazaar interview.

Previously, Falchuk was spending four nights a week at her home and three nights at his own residence with his children from a previous marriage — an arrangement many of her friends found appealing.

“I thought it was really interesting how resonant that was for people. One of my best friends was like, ‘That is my dream. Don’t ever move in,'” she shared.

Living apart had its benefits, said the star.

“I think it certainly helps with preserving mystery and also preserving the idea that this person has their own life,” she said. “So this is something I’m trying to remain aware of now as we merge together.”
