Joanna Gaines shares a sweet message to husband Chip on their 16th wedding anniversary

Cydney Henderson USA TODAY Published 3:04 PM EDT Jun 2, 2019

Former “Fixer Upper” stars Joanna and Chip Gaines are celebrating 16 years of marriage.

Joanna took to Instagram Friday to commemorate their anniversary with a sweet message to her husband, writing, “16 years and it feels like we’re just getting started.”

She isn’t kidding. In the past year, the two expanded their lifestyle and home empire with plans to launch a new cable network with HGTV parent Discovery, were named to Time magazine’s 100 most influential people of the year and added to their family with the birth of their fifth child, son Crew.

The couple has four other children together: Drake, 14; Ella, 13; Duke, 11; and Emmie, 9.

But their admiration for each other remains unchanged. “I love you Chip Carter Gaines,” Joanna captioned a picture of the two lovebirds casually posing together.

For Chip, it was love at first sight.

“Her dad made the mistake of putting a pic of the family behind the counter at his (automotive) shop,” he told Pop Sugar in 2018. “I knew I’d marry her one day just by the picture on the wall.”

They later met at her father’s business, where Joanna worked, when Chip popped in to get his brakes tuned up. “We met in the waiting area and hit it off immediately. He was genuinely engaging and he had such a sincere smile,” she said.

The couple tied the knot in Waco, Texas, on May 31, 2003.

Joanna and Chip went on to become household names through their HGTV series “Fixer Upper,” which ended in April 2018 after five seasons.

But they have bigger things in store for their new cable network, now in the works.

The channel will launch in summer 2020 and replace Discovery’s DIY network, the couple exclusively told USA TODAY. It is expected to be branded with some variation of their Magnolia banner, which grew out of their construction business.

A website and streaming app are also in the works. And the couple will star in a new signature show on the network, among other potential series, that goes beyond home renovation.

Chip and Joanna Gaines Reveal Their Marriage Works for This Reason

Chip and Joanna Gaines seemingly have a perfect relationship, leaving their fans wondering what the secret to their marriage is. The couple admit that while they “don’t agree all the time,” there’s a reason why their marriage works.

They’re the “best of friends”

Chip and Joanna, who have been married for 16 years and have five children, opened up about why their relationship is so successful.

In the Nov. 8 issue of People, the couple dished on why they are so perfectly matched, with Chip explaining: “Jo and I are the best of friends, and yet obviously we don’t agree all the time. I’ve conceded to her dozens of times, if not hundreds throughout our relationship, and she has done the same with me.”

He added: “In the end, Jo and I sincerely care more about one another than we do about one of us being right during a debate.”

Joannas loves that her husband provides “kindness with no strings attached,” explaining, “If you are stranded on the side of the road, you want Chip Gaines to drive by, because he’ll turn around and help. It doesn’t matter what’s going on, who he has to meet, and he expects nothing in return. It’s that quiet kindness that’s challenged me, our children and everyone here at Magnolia. We all need more of that in our lives.”

Joanna shared how their personalities “created a spark”

In 2001, Chip and Joanna met while she was working at her father’s auto shop in Waco, Texas. They got married two years later, with Joanna telling People in 2016, “Match made in heaven is not the term you would use to describe us. But when we mixed our personalities together, it created a spark.”

In the 2018 summer issue of Magnolia Journal magazine, they shared that part of their relationship’s success is making time for each other. Joanna noted at the time: “Chip and I have a standing date night once a week. We usually choose to stay close to home and rotate through our favorite dinner spots.”

During a September 2019 appearance at the INBOUND conference, Chip shared that having their professional and personal lives intertwined is a challenging situation, noting: “This is a very hard thing to do, to work together with someone you also have a relationship and a family with.”

He continued: “But we’re this odd yin and yang, this whole opposites attract. It really was this powerful chemistry that happened early in our marriage. We enjoyed spending time together, taking on challenges together.”

He shared that the “secret ingredient” for them “is a solid mutual respect,” adding, “It’s not perfect. A lot of hard work goes into this, but if you can get to a mutual place of respect, you can change the world.”

Their dedication to kindness is admirable

The couple shared how they are seeking to make the world a better place, beginning with some small acts of kindness.

They created Kindness Flyers, which have tear-off tabs that encourage small tokens of kindness, with Chip explaining, “It got really personal for me. Obviously, I want to do a whole lot more than print out flyers and staple them around people’s neighborhoods, but if this is where we can start, I’m honored to give it a try.”

Joanna added: “We were hoping that it would resonate with people. Little things that wouldn’t feel like a stretch and are good for your soul.”

Just last month, Chip’s admiration for his wife was also on display, as the former Fixer Upper star documented his sweet birthday surprise for Joanna.

Documenting the sweet moment online, Chip shared a photo of Crew sitting on the couch on Twitter before they brought in her early morning birthday surprise. “Crew is ready to surprise @joannagaines with breakfast in bed.. happy birthday Joanna! #AkaMom” he wrote alongside the adorable image.

Two years later, the couple tied the knot at the historic Earle-Harrison House, and honeymooned in New York, even naming their first child after the Drake hotel where they stayed.

“Match made in heaven is not the term you would use to describe us. But when we mixed our personalities together, it created a spark,” Joanna told PEOPLE in 2016 of the early days of their relationship.

Opening up about the secret of their enduring romance, Joanna previously revealed that after over a decade together, the pair still make sure to prioritize themselves.

“Chip and I have a standing date night once a week,” Joanna said in the 2018 summer issue of their Magnolia Journal magazine. “We usually choose to stay close to home and rotate through our favorite dinner spots .”

You watch them on your TV screens all the time—but have you ever stopped to wonder how the couple behind HGTV’s Fixer Upper first met?

Before Chip and Joanna Gaines became the design powerhouse we know and love, they were just two ordinary college students trying to figure out their futures. While Chip started flipping houses as a student at Baylor University, Joanna majored in communications, with dreams of becoming a broadcast journalist. But while the couple both attended Baylor, they actually didn’t actually meet there. Instead, it was Joanna’s side job that brought them together.

Throughout high school and college, Joanna worked at her dad’s Firestone Tire store in Waco, Texas. It was during this time that she snagged her first TV gig, appearing in commercials for the business. “Her dad made the mistake of putting a pic of the family behind the counter at his shop,” Chip explained to PopSugar. “I knew I’d marry her one day just by the picture on the wall.”

Chip started frequenting the shop and making any excuse to stop by, in hopes of meeting Joanna. “My buddies used to always joke that no one could get their brakes done as often as I got my brakes done,” Chip told KWTX.

By the time he finally ran into Joanna at the shop in 2001, Chip had the perfect pick-up line prepared to impress his future wife: “Hey, you’re the girl from the commercials.” And yes, it worked!

There were a few snafus along the way to love, though. Chip showed up an hour late to their first date, and then didn’t call Joanna for several months—all because of a bet. “I’d made a bet with John to see who could hold out the longest before calling our dates back,” Chip wrote in The Magnolia Story.”I really wanted that fifty dollars from John! That’s the only reason I didn’t call.”

Once they did reconnect, it took a little time for Joanna to warm up. While Chip was head-over-heels for Joanna before he even met her in person, she was more guarded early on in their relationship. Chip even jokingly described his now-wife as a “cyborg” to US Weekly, explaining that he was definitely the first to fall in love. But despite their differences, the couple recognized their shared values and beliefs early on.

“When I learned how to embrace Joanna for who she is and really support her all the way, I feel like that was a real lightbulb moment for me in my relationship with her,” Chip told Jefferson Bethke. “As I really enveloped this concept of I’m going to support her, and love her, and fight for her regardless, I feel like that opened heart to be able to reciprocate.”

It was Chip’s sincerity that eventually won Joanna over. “At first, I couldn’t believe how kind Chip was—he had kind eyes, and made me laugh a lot,” Joanna told PopSugar. “I knew he was the one because I knew I could trust him.”

After dating for a little over a year, Chip and Joanna married at the Earle-Harrison House in Waco on May 31, 2003. Soon after the wedding, they combined forces professionally, too—leveraging Chip’s renovating skills and Joanna’s eye for interior design—to become the powerhouse design team they are today.

Chip and Joanna started flipping houses together within a month of their wedding and later began to focus on renovations, due to the changing housing market. In fact, one of their earliest “fixer upper” projects was their own home.

The couple has now been married for 15 years and have four children, Drake, Ella, Duke, and Emmie—with a fifth on the way! While Chip and Joanna’s stunning makeovers may have caught the public’s eye at first, it’s their strong family values that have turned them into household names.

See how Chip and Joanna describe their own love story:

Fixer Upper couple Chip and Joanna Gaines are putting on a happy face following the birth of their fifth baby — but the little bundle of joy may be the wrecking ball that demolishes their marriage.

Insiders told RadarOnline.com that the weight of raising five kids, the demands of their massive empire, plus allegations that their construction work is substandard — and possibly even criminal — have put an insurmountable strain on the pair’s relationship.

Chip and Joanna, who have been married 15 years, welcomed their new son, Crew, June 21. Since then, a source said, “They have been stretched to the limit, and people close to them say this may be the final straw that breaks the back of their relationship.”

The pregnancy came just weeks after last September’s announcement that the fifth season of their home renovation show Fixer Upper would be the last.

But insiders claimed the time off hasn’t been enough to ease the mounting pressures on the reality couple.

“Frankly, Chip and Jo don’t think they can hide their problems anymore,” a source said. “They’ve been pushed to exhaustion. Now with a baby on board, you can forget about intimacy!”

Their extensive brand — which includes merchandise collections, a bed-and-breakfast, books and the quarterly magazine Magnolia Journal — took a massive hit in February when a former business partner said Chip is a corner-cutting cowboy who stiffed him for over $9,000. He also charged Chip failed to get proper construction permits, hired unlicensed contractors and did slipshod work.

“Working together and raising all these kids have worn them out and a new baby was the last thing they needed right now,” an insider said. “Their marriage is falling apart!”

Earlier this month, the Gaineses revealed how they keep their romance going after a decade and a half together.

“Chip and I have a standing date night once a week. We usually choose to stay close to home and rotate through our favorite dinner spots ,” Joanna said in the summer issue of their Magnolia Journal magazine.

In December 2017, Chip revealed the secret to their successful marriage, sharing that the power couple is just as prone to everyday ups and downs as the rest of the world.

“It’s hard work. Jo and I have struggles and fighting and arguments just like anybody else. This isn’t like we got lucky and hit the lottery and the two perfect people fell in love,” he said in the January issue of SUCCESS.

No need to fix up this relationship! Former Fixer Upper star Joanna Gaines paid tribute to her husband, Chip Gaines, on their 16th wedding anniversary.

“16 years and it feels like we’re just getting started,” Joanna, 41, captioned an Instagram picture on Friday, May 31. “I love you Chip Carter Gaines #16.”

Chip, 44, took to Twitter to express his love for his wife. “Happy #16th anniversary Joanna! A.k.a. Jojo, joey, jo, boss, mom, ma ma, mommy, sweetgirl, kiddo,. My girl by any other name,” he wrote. “But my BEST day is still the day you officially became Joanna Lea Stevens Gaines! #heresToManyMore I love u.”

The HGTV stars tied the knot on May 31, 2003.

Ten years after saying “I do,” Chip, 44, and Joanna became hosts of the home improvement series Fixer Upper, which ran from 2013 to 2018. Less than one year after the show ended, it was announced that the duo would be expanding their empire and opening a coffee shop in Waco, Texas, where they currently live. Chip and Joanna also own Magnolia Market at the Silos, a shopping center with games, food trucks and a garden, and a family restaurant called Magnolia Table.

Additionally, the pair announced in November 2018 that they would be returning to TV via their own television network. “We’re gonna really carve it out in a way that really makes sense to us and our family,” Chip explained on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon at the time. “It’s gonna be filmed a lot in Waco, Texas, so we don’t have to travel a whole lot.”

But the happily married couple have more on their plates than just businesses — Chip and Joanna also share five children: Drake, Ella, Duke, Emmie and Crew. With such a busy schedule, the Magnolia Table cookbook author understands that it is easy for moms to feel guilty about not being home with their kids more frequently.

“Replace the word guilt with grace. Look for grace in the moments, the small wins that lead to the greatest investments in their hearts,” she encouraged on Instagram in November 2018. “Don’t spend another second focusing on failure. Instead use whatever time and whatever energy you have and look for the moments where grace can be found.”

The Sweet Story Behind Joanna Gaines’ Engagement Ring Will Make You Teary

HGTV

Every engagement ring has a story. Chances are, if you’re a Southerner, it has about seven. There’s the ring’s history, the setting, the diamond, how you were asked, the post-engagement toast…the list goes on and on.

Well, for the most heartwarming tale with all of these threads wrapped into one, the one-and-only Joanna Gaines has us covered. In a book excerpt from The Magnolia Story posted on Cosmopolitan.com, the HGTV star recalls how her proposal went down. It all started when, after dating for a year, Chip told Jo they were going to see a private concert—a four-hour drive away.

Always one to have a trick up his sleeve, Chip proceeded to take his beloved Jo to a shopping complex in the area from which his parents hail. On bended knee, he popped the question, Jo said yes, and the rest is straight out of a Southern fairy-tale: Rather than present Jo with a ring, Chip had taken Jo to a shopping center that was home to a very special jewelry store. The owner, Billy Holder, was a family friend, and Jo would now get to design her own engagement ring.

Image zoom Laura Cavanaugh/Getty Images

“I was able to pick out a nice round diamond and a beautiful, antique-looking platinum setting. I had a blast sitting there with Billy, designing the perfect ring. Chip just sat there, patiently observing every second of it,” Joanna wrote in their book. “Twelve years later, we had the opportunity to invite Billy Holder out to the farm for our anniversary party,” she later continued. “So Billy showed me all of these beautiful diamonds and told me I could have my pick. That’s supposed to be every girl’s dream, right? But I looked him in the eye, and I said,’I’m sorry, but no. This is the original diamond I picked, and it’s perfect just the way it is.'”

If that’s not a Southern state of mind, we don’t know what is.
