Will Chip and Joanna Gaines’ kids be part of their new cable network? Only if they want to

When Chip and Joanna Gaines first started shooting “Fixer Upper” in 2013, their four kids went along for the ride.

“There were seasons where we were really dragging babies to some extent into scenes to try to create this thing or that thing,” Chip says. “If the kids aren’t interested in that, or their hearts aren’t in it, we create a real tension inside our family, and this isn’t going to work for us long term.”

It was part of the reason they decided to quit the series: “There was no drama … Jo and I just realized we needed a break from this reality, and we needed to step back.”

So last year marked the end of the HGTV series that turned the Waco, Texas, couple into household names. It also marked the birth of their fifth child, son Crew, and the couple’s plan for a new cable network with HGTV parent Discovery, due in summer 2020.

“The kids are growing like weeds,” Joanna says. “Drake is now 14, and I’m joking with Chip he’s going to be taller than him in a year.” (Emmie Kay, Duke and Ella Rose are growing, too.)

So now that they’re older, how will the younger Gaineses figure into their parents’ plans to star in at least one new show that more broadly follows their burgeoning empire?

“We talked about this together,” Joanna says. “The kids are very aware of what this is and why we’re doing it. If the kids want to be on it, they’ll be on it. They’re just all getting to this beautiful age where they’re starting to figure out what they love, what they’re passionate about. When they were younger, when we were doing ‘Fixer,’ it was natural for them to be on my hip. As they got older, we just never wanted to force the scene, we always told our kids, ‘If you want to be part of this, we’ll put a mic on you.’ If the kids want to do it, we would gladly welcome it, but we’ll leave it up to them.”

The early report: “They’re excited for Mommy and Daddy,” Chip says.

“They’ve got show ideas!” enthuses Joanna.

“We thought they’d pre-emptively say, ‘Oh, man, do we have to?’ ” Chip says. Instead, “they were like, ‘Aah, we’re excited.’ The next thing we know, they were writing in their little journals show ideas, and they were drawing little cartoon characters that would represent ideas. It just was a real encouraging moment for Jo and I as parents to realize these kids are resilient, and they enjoy this more than we sometimes give them credit for.”

So about those ideas …

“We’re brainstorming with food,” Joanna says. “I’m always coming up with these cooking shows in my mind. I never know if it will come to fruition, but my kids do the same thing; when we’re in the kitchen, we pretend like it’s a show.”.

Now that he’s older, “Drake likes the production side, editing,” while “Ella is our little business girl, always thinking about ways to (feature) kids and entrepreneurialism. There’s a notebook full of ideas. Who knows what we’ll come up with, but I love that their minds are spinning.”

Most people think Chip and Joanna Gaines’ world revolves around transforming rundown houses in Waco, Texas into stunning homes — but that’s not exactly the case. The HGTV stars announced in September that they’re leaving their hit show after its current fifth season to focus more on their family, which proves that their children are their main priority. Even though the Gaines have kept their children out of the limelight for the most part, here’s everything we know about their beloved kids — and the new baby they have on the way!

1. The couple currently have four children.

That includes Drake, 12, Ella Rose, 9, Duke, 8, and Emmie Kay, 7.

2. They’re expecting a baby boy.

Their fifth child is on the way and (most likely) due in July. Chip announced the gender on Twitter and we’re sure he’s thrilled he’ll soon have another guy around to help him with all his home projects.

3. The boys have “D” names and the girls have “E” names.

And, yes, the couple is currently brainstorming “D” names for their future baby. You’ll also notice the girls’ have two names.

4. The kids are extremely grounded — despite their parents’ celebrity.

The Gaines are self-described strict parents, and as a result, their children are super sweet. One example of this: “All he requested was balloons and mama’s cinnamon rolls … someone’s got a birthday tomorrow!” Joanna said on Instagram about their son Duke.

5. In fact, they don’t really know their parents are famous.

Part of that is because, even though Chip and Joanna are television stars, they don’t have a TV at home. “So they don’t really understand that we have a show,” Joanna tole PEOPLE. “They don’t get it.”

6. But they’re often seen on set.

The Gaines kids have made brief appearances on Fixer Upper over the years, but what viewers don’t know is that even when they’re not in the shot, they’re usually nearby. Part of the reason the kids can visit set is because their parents will only film within a 40-mile radius of Waco, allowing them to stay close at all times.

7. They aren’t addicted to technology.

“It’s funny, I’m a little more laid back than I thought I’d be,” Joanna told PEOPLE. ” certain things that I really care about, but I think the funny part, with Chip, is just the video games, the TV. That’s where he kinda gets a little strict. It’s, ‘You go play outside.'” Joanna also revealed the kids won’t be getting cell phones until they go off to college. Good thing they have 60 animals on a 40-acre farm to keep them entertained.

Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines will partner with Discovery Inc. on a new cable network and streaming network as part of a media joint venture between the two parties announced Wednesday.

The as-yet-named multi-platform media company will feature a linear television network — replacing the current DIY Network — and TV Everywhere app beginning in Summer 2020, with a subscription streaming service to debut at a later date. The network’s programming will center around topics including community, home, garden, food, wellness, entrepreneurialism and design, according to Discovery.

HGTV president Allison Page will serve as president of the new joint venture, with the Gaines’ serving as chief creative officers. Chip and Joanna Gaines starred in HGTV’s breakout home renovation series Fixer Upper from 2013 to 2018. Episodes from the series will be featured on the new channel, said network officials.

“Chip and Joanna Gaines have become trusted, household names since the debut of Fixer Upper and through this joint venture, Discovery is proud to extend our relationship with them,” said David Zaslav, CEO, Discovery in a statement. “They’ve got authenticity and relatability, that special something that is so difficult in our business to find. People love them, their taste, their businesses – they’ve built an ecosystem that aligns perfectly with our vision at Discovery for fueling people’s passions.”

How Chip and Joanna Gaines’ Five Kids Are Following in Their Entrepreneurial Footsteps

Chip and Joanna Gaines are pros when it comes to entrepreneurship, so it’s no surprise that their kids (even baby Crew!) are following in their footsteps.

“He’s my little sidekick,” Joanna, 40, says of her 9-month-old youngest child in the latest issue of PEOPLE, out Friday. “He comes to work with me every day and goes to all my meetings.”

“I always tell Chip, ‘This boy is going to be able to run the company by age 5!’ ” she jokes.

For Chip, 44, and Joanna’s four older children — daughters Emmie Kay, 9, and Ella Rose, 12, plus their brothers Duke, 10, and Drake, 14 — the Magnolia headquarters in Waco, Texas, is like a second home.

“They love being here,” she tells PEOPLE. “I always try to involve them with what we’re doing at work.”

In addition to the book, the Gaines children also have their own impressive business endeavors.

“Each kid has their own thing,” Joanna tells PEOPLE. “Drake loves the production side, so in the summer he’s up with the guys, and they’re teaching him how to edit.”

“Then Ella is like me,” she adds. “I think she’ll follow in my footsteps and have her hand in a lot of things. Right now she wants to cook, be a lead designer and have a donut truck.”

How Old Were Chip and Joanna Gaines During Her 1st Pregnancy?

Our favorite Fixer Upper hosts announced today that their fifth child will be… a boy! In a video posted on Twitter by Mike Spurlock (@jms81367), Chip asked Gage (Spurlock’s son), a little boy he met at a golfing event via the Tebow foundation, for advice on D-names for their newest family member. Not only was it an insanely adorable way to interact with this little boy, it also unwittingly revealed the sex of the Gaines’s upcoming baby. “It’s a little boy,” Gaines told Gage, “All I can think of is Dragon!”

#Gage was so thrilled to get to meet you! Thank you for making his day!

While we can’t entirely get on board with the name Dragon Gaines, we can get onboard with Chip’s reaction to the unexpected sex reveal. Though he hadn’t planned it, Chip took it in stride, retweeting Spurlock’s original post with his own grateful commentary.

In all of this baby news, you might be wondering how old were Chip and Joanna when they started having kids? A good place to start is asking how old are Chip and Joanna Gaines now, and then working backwards. Though Joanna will give birth to the baby boy “D” at 40 (her birthday is in April!), she and Chip had their first child Drake Gaines, now 12, when they were 27 and 31, respectively. Their second, Ella Rose Gaines, came just a year after after (she’s now 11). Then came Duke (9), who arrived when Chip was 34 and Joanna was 30, and finally Emmie Kay Gaines two years after that when the couple was 36 and 32, respectively. Though there is going to be quite an age gap between the older and younger siblings, we have no hesitation that they’re going to make great siblings for the newest family member!

We can’t wait to meet the new baby boy Gaines and are cheering on his parents—even if they do end up naming him Dragon!

Are Chip and Joanna Gaines Catholic?

What do Chip and Joanna Gaines belive? | deviousrlm/ iStock / Getty Images Plus

Fixer Upper’s Chip and Joanna Gaines often discuss the importance of faith and family. In several media interviews they say faith has shaped who they are and how they approach life. However, you might be curious about what religion they practice. Are Chip and Joanna Gaines Catholic? If not, what do they believe? Here’s what we know about Chip and Joanna Gaines’ religious background.

Chip and Joanna Gaines’ church

Chip and Joanna attend Antioch Community Church in Waco, Texas. In the About Us section, the church describes itself as non-denominational. The church states its mission is to share the message of Jesus:

Our passion and purpose has always been and will always be Jesus. The One who takes away our sins, binds up the broken hearted, gives hope to the hopeless, heals the sick, and delivers the captive. The One who is love. We believe the church is the hope of the world and want to see more of Jesus in our city, our nation, and the nations. Practically, that means we are a local church with a global mission.

Chip and Joanna say they have a personal relationship with God

In a 2016 interview with Antioch Church, Chip and Joanna talk about their relationship with God and how faith has had an impact on their lives. When Joanna spoke about the years leading up to building her business, she says she discovered who God is to her. “In that time of loneliness, I met God… I met Him in such a real way and I learned that He was not only my Father, He was my friend,” said Joanna.

They don’t want to push their religious beliefs on others

Although Chip and Joanna have a close relationship with God, they told Fox News they try not to be too outspoken about their beliefs. “For me, changed everything. It’s a part of who I am. I can’t separate the two,” he told Fox News in a 2017 interview. “I try not to rub it in anybody’s face. I’m not real boisterous about it, but people seem to find out about it just through the way that Jo and I live our lives,” he continued.

Bringing church to Magnolia Market

Faith is so important to Chip and Joanna they went out of their way to provide a space for a church to have religious services. In October 2018, the couple invited a church to hold services on their Magnolia Market property free of charge, reports the Waco Tribune-Herald.

Church Under the Bridge has been having Sunday worship service underneath an underpass in Waco, Texas. However, the church was displaced because of a city project to expand portions of the Interstate, which could take as long as five years to complete. The church will move to Magnolia Market at the Silos in 2019 while construction is underway.

This Christian holiday is sacred to Chip and Joanna Gaines

Chip and Joanna hold Christmas dear to their hearts. In an article for the winter issue of The Magnolia Journal, Joanna talks about how she considers this a sacred time. For her, it’s a season of hope and an opportunity to go into the new year with a fresh perspective. “I am so drawn to the sacredness of this season. It’s here that I remember there is no situation so dark that light is not permitted. There’s no scenario so bleak that hope can’t find it’s way in,” she writes in her column.

We can gather from their church’s mission statement and from some of the things the couple has said about their faith that they are not Catholic. Chip and Joanna Gaines are likely non-denominational Christians.

Baby No. 5 Is ‘Fixer-Upper’s’ Christian Couple Chip and Joanna Gaines’ New Project

Chip and Joanna Gaines, the Waco, Texas, couple behind HGTV’s home-remodeling show “Fixer Upper” have embarked on a new building project — making baby number five.

Having more than two kids is already socially questionable for a lot of secular folks — and some of them have been unpleasant about it on social media — but the the publicly Christian Gainses left that behind a while ago. They’re currently parents to Drake (12), Ella (11), Duke (9) and Emmie Kay (7).

Their children were born before the beginning of “Fixer Upper,” and the new baby is coming along shortly after the couple announced last September that the HGTV hit would be coming to an end.

Here’s the Instagram photo that revealed the news:

Joanna then posted a video of her sonogram to Facebook, saying:

Chip swears he can already tell it’s a boy. Look at the little heartbeat!!

Click here for the video; below find a screenshot:

Simple things like this — sharing a sonogram in joy — can be a heartfelt and yet subtle pro-life witness. Combine that with a couple that makes no secret of a strong faith in Christ, and the picture of a successful husband and wife who are still parents of several children, is a blockbuster combination.

Joanna Gaines, 39, has hinted that she and Chip are stopping at five kids — they’re not Catholics, so contraception may be part of the picture — but a prayer for God to continue to bless them would not be out of order.

After all, what better construction project is there than the cell-by-cell creation of a new human life?

For Mother’s Day 2016, Joanna wrote a letter to moms on the Website for the Gaineses’ business, Magnolia Market. Click here for the whole thing; and here’s a sample:

You are enough.

I think at times all moms get this insecure feeling of “I’m not doing enough.” As a working mom, it’s the hardest when my kids grab onto me as I’m walking out the door and say, “Mommy please stay home!” I don’t want to ignore that, so I always explain to them that being with them is my favorite thing in the world. I explain that I have to work just like they have to go to school. I also let them know what I’m doing at work that day—whether it’s filming the show or going into the office—and what time I’ll be home. Taking a few seconds to let them in on this other huge part of my life has really helped them understand that mom and dad have a big job to do.

Motherhood can be difficult. It’s not an instant gratification thing all the time. When your kiddos are just babies and you’re changing diapers or listening to whining constantly, it can feel overwhelming. But I want to encourage you, because one day you’ll be sitting around a table for your birthday breakfast and you’ll realize that their little hearts are thankful for you. And they do notice things like mom’s homemade meals.

Chip Gaines Is Finally Opening Up about the Real Reason ‘Fixer Upper’ Had to End

  • #entertainment
  • #top headlines
  • #Fixer Upper
  • #Chip and Joanna Gaines

When Chip and Joanna Gaines decided to walk away from their wildly popular HGTV show Fixer Upper, the news left fans shocked and disappointed. But it made a lot more sense when Joanna announced she was pregnant. But Baby Crew’s arrival is only part of the story. And now, Chip Gaines is opening up about the real reason Fixer Upper ended.

Part of what makes Chip and Joanna Gaines so loveable is how, no matter how popular they get, they remain down-to-earth, normal folks. Fame has a way of chancing people. But despite their celeb status, they don’t act differently. They just act like Chip and Jo.

In fact, it’s their genuine passion and raw talent for home renovation and design that got them “discovered.” The couple never set out seeking the limelight.

“We came into this whole thing sort of shock and awe,” Chip explained when the couple appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “And we had never had any inspiration to be on television. We didn’t know anything about the business.”

And while becoming a TV star sounds like a dream come true to most, the Gaines family soon found it can be equal parts burden and blessing. And now, Chip Gaines is opening up more about their decision to leave HGTV.

The Real Reason Fixer Upper Ended

Certainly, the success Chip and Joanna Gaines experienced on HGTV is something they’ll always treasure. And to Fixer Upper fans, their decision to leave seemed to come out of nowhere. Of course, this opened the door to all kinds of rumors. But the couple has always been quick to point out there is no bad blood or scandal between them and HGTV.

And now, with some time and distance between the show’s final season, Chip Gaines gave some more insight into the real reason Fixer Upper ended.

Chip and Joanna Gaines truly love what they do. And turning their passion into a reality TV show was exciting at first. But the more things became about the camera, the less the duo was enjoying themselves.

“TV was a funny thing for me. I’m an authentic, sincere person,” Chip said. “So, as long as things are natural and organic, I’m in my element. But the more staged something becomes, or the more required something becomes, it boxes me up, and I felt like toward the end of the Fixer Upper journey, I felt caged, trapped.”

There was no big blow up. The real reason Fixer Upper ended isn’t that something bad happened. But as time went by, Chip and Joanna’s uneasiness grew and they had to face the reality that the show no longer felt right for them and their family.

“Jo and I couldn’t figure it out,” Chip went on to explain. “I mean, why? You’re getting to have all this fun, right? But it’s like if I put a camera in your face and said, ‘Hey, say something funny.’ Or if I put a camera in your face and said, ‘Hey, be smart.’ I just struggled with that environment. Especially at the end of it.”

Chip And Joanna Gaines Aren’t Finished Yet

The end of Fixer Upper was a tough pill for fans to swallow. But as faith-filled Christians, Chip and Joanna know God has more in store.

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Ecclesiastes 3:1

And thankfully, there has still been plenty of this sweet couple to go around for the fans.

For starters, we’ve rejoiced with Chip and Joanna as they welcomed Crew Gaines into the family. And the two have made their rounds in TV interviews, even announcing the exciting news that they’ll be returning to television, eventually. Though the logistics are still in the very early stages, Chip Gaines let the cat out of the bag when chatting with Jimmy Fallon that Discovery Network is setting Chip and Joanna Gaines up with their very own TV network!

So, for now, may the couple’s Fixer Upper reruns, books, Chipstarter campaigns, and, of course, adorable photos of Crew tide us Chip and Joanna fans over!

“Our baby boy, Crew Gaines, is here and we couldn’t be more in love,” she captioned a series of pictures taken at the hospital. “He made an unexpected (and speedy) entrance into the world two and a half weeks early – which is fitting given he was a sweet surprise from day one. Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. We are so grateful.”

And then there were 5.. The Gaines crew is now 1 stronger! 10 beautiful toes and 10 beautiful fingers all accounted for, and big momma is doing great! #blessedBeyondBelief

The name Crew breaks from Gaines family tradition since their sons Duke, 9, and Drake, 13, are both “D” names. (The girls Emmie, 8, and Ella, 11, also have matching first initials.) Looks like they had trouble coming up with a name that started with a “D,” though — Chip had joked back in March that the only thing he could think of was “Dragon,” which Joanna quickly turned down.

The baby’s name also seems like it could be a sweet nod to the fact that he’s now part of the extremely close family. Joanna posted a picture of the four older kids standing of the hospital room door, looking as though they were eagerly anticipating their new sibling.

“They couldn’t wait to meet their new baby brother,” Joanna wrote.

While the couple’s hit HGTV show “Fixer Upper” has concluded, they’re still busy with their many other projects including a new restaurant and upcoming book. But Chip and Joanna have both said that family is their focus.

Congrats to the crew… and Crew!

Just weeks after Chip and Joanna Gaines decided to end their hit HGTV show, Fixer Upper, so they could focus on their family, the universe gave them all the more reason to shift gears — Joanna learned she was pregnant with her fifth child. Though she and Chip joked about having another child, it’d been eight years since she cared for a newborn. “I truly believed I was done,” she’s said.

Amazon The Magnolia Story Chip Gaines; Joanna Gaines $26.99 $13.99 (48% off) In a candid personal essay for the fall issue of her magazine, Magnolia Journal, the designer revealed exactly what the transition has been like — and why, even though the latest pregnancy left her feeling more worn out, she’s more confident than ever.

“It’s sweet how, even in the most unpredictable ways, we’re given exactly what we need for that exact moment in time. It wasn’t something I could have anticipated. But being pregnant and ‘forced’ to slow down has been a gift,” she wrote in the essay, which People shared excerpts from. “I don’t know if it’s because I’m a little older, but this time around I am more comfortable in my own skin, sure that I can do this. Confident that I was made for this very thing in this very season.”

Since family has been a key part of every aspect of the Gaineses’ lives, including their show and their businesses, there’s been a natural curiosity about the couple’s personal lives. After five seasons of Fixer Upper, many fans have started to feel like they know Chip and Joanna; they’re personally invested in their world, no matter how far viewers are from Waco, Texas.

So — for anyone reading this and scratching their heads — let’s back up a little and tackle some of your most-Googled questions about the Gaines fam:

First Things First: Who Are Chip And Joanna’s Kids?

Well, since the Gaineses haven’t recorded a Sound Of Music-style video of their children introducing themselves (admittedly, their youngest is a bit too fresh-on-this-Earth to sing and dance), here’s an at-a-glance guide:

  • Drake Gaines, 13
  • Ella Rose Gaines, 11
  • Duke Gaines, 9
  • Emmie Kay Gaines, 8
  • Crew Gaines, 1 1/2 months

Drake, Ella Rose, Duke, and Emmie Kay have all been psyched to be older siblings, taking the responsibility seriously, Joanna’s said. “We’re all rallying around this baby, which I feel is a sweet gift to our family,” she told People earlier this year.

What’s Their Youngest’s Name Again?

Crew! Did you just scroll past everything above?! TL;DR, I get it.

Chip and Joanna broke from their tradition of giving the boys’ first names starting with D’s with this name. While they haven’t explained why they chose it, The Bump notes that “Crew” means “chariot.” So, well, there’s that.

Wait — When Was Baby Crew Born?

How Much Did He Weigh?

Now you’re just getting nosy. Chip and Joanna haven’t shared that information just yet, but Joanna did note on Instagram that Crew arrived a full two and a half weeks early. And, by all accounts, baby Crew is healthy and doing well, which is the important thing.

Who Takes Care Of Their Kids?

Chip and Joanna do, but — as part of her recent essay — she says being a mother of five (while running several businesses!) has taught her to turn to others for support when she needs it. “Since Crew’s birth, I have a new understanding of the reality of the phrase ‘it takes a village,'” she wrote.
