8 best mattress toppers for a blissful night’s sleep

Remember the tale of the princess and the pea? We may have thought the princess was off-the-scale sensitive, but can you relate just a little bit?

There’s no denying that what we lie upon makes all the difference to the quality of our sleep.

So let’s get acquainted with the mattress topper. This often overlooked and under-rated item in the bedding department can do wonders for your sleeping experience.

A topper can transform a lumpy, bumpy mattress into the comfiest nest of dreams – giving extra support to reduce aches and pains, or cosy under-body padding.

It will also warm up your bed or cool it down, and protect your mattress from bacteria and stains.

The things to consider before you buy include thickness, fill and budget. Toppers can range from a discrete slither of soft fabric to a 10cm wedge – almost a mini-mattress.

Memory foam will offer firm support or if you’re looking to add a soft layer or cosiness, then a natural feather or squishy synthetic-fill is the way to go.

These are the ones we found added “aahh” to the bed and improved our sleep.

We mostly tested double toppers so the prices below reflect this size, although many of them can be bought bigger or smaller too.

You can trust our independent reviews. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.

Soak and Sleep ultimate soft as down with silk mattress topper: £115, Soak and Sleep

We were really impressed by the firm but springy sensation of this hollowfibre-filled topper and rate it as an ultra-comfortable choice for all sleepers – front, back and side. A layer of mulberry silk in the inners also helps to wick away moisture and reduces sweatiness in the night.

The fill is held in place by the topper’s quilting, and we were happy to discover it didn’t shift around in the night. A quick plump in the morning soon revives the topper’s bounciness.

This one can be machine washed, but unless you’ve got a large drum washer and dryer, your best bet is taking it to be professionally cleaned.

Panda memory foam bamboo topper: £99.95, Panda

If eco-credentials are as important to you as comfort, the Panda topper will appeal.

The naturally hypoallergenic bamboo outer of this topper is not only super-soft to lie on, but needs only a third of the amount of water to produce it, compared to cotton and requires no harmful pesticides or chemicals. We like that Panda also uses packaging made from 100 per cent recycled materials and pledges to be completely plastic-free in 2020.

At 5cm deep, the topper is made from gel-capsule infused hydro-foam that prevents overheating, and we rated the sink-in feel that was supportive on the pressure points of hips and shoulders.

Along with straps to secure it to the mattress, silicone dots on the underside stop the topper from sliding around – useful for fidgeting sleepers. We also liked that the cover comes off to throw into the washing machine.

Naturalmat the tremendous topper: £610, Naturalmat

There’s a reason this pick sits on the mattresses in some of the UK’s swankiest hotels – check into Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Oxfordshire, or Scotland’s Skibo Castle and it’s likely you’ll be bedding down on this.

Although the tremendous topper certainly won’t suit everyone’s budget, you could argue it’s cheaper than splashing out on a top-end mattress. And we discovered that for the big price tag, the deep 7cm of padding does offer the ultimate in squishy comfort.

It’s filled with layers of natural latex, heat regulating cashmere and luxurious lambswool. The hypoallergenic treatment of the topper’s cotton cover will protect from moths, dust mites and bed bugs – so it’s an ideal choice for allergy sufferers. It’s also available in eight dimensions from a small single up to emperor sized.

Dunelm teddy bear cream quilted mattress topper: £25, Dunelm

If you’re happy with the overall feel of your mattress but want to add an extra cosy layer, we found this topper does the job.

Don’t expect much in terms of thickness – there’s little support, but for the very pleasing price you get a functional topper that works all year round. Lie it fleecy side up in the chilly months and then flip it over to the microfibre cover to keep your bed cooler when the temperature rises.

The topper fixes easily to your mattress with elasticated straps and can be bought in single and king size too.

Buy now

Simba hybrid topper: From £239.20, Simba

Fans of Simba rave about the brand’s hybrid foam/spring technology and this topper is a shortcut to the benefits without forking out for a new mattress.

The layers of latex, conical springs and high-density foam create a bouncy but supportive topper that will boost a flagging bed. Thanks to the open cell foam that gives a cooling airflow, we didn’t wake feeling clammy and uncomfortable, which can sometimes be the case with memory foam mattresses and toppers.

If you have regular house guests, the hybrid topper will improve a night’s sleep on a sofa bed or blow-up mattress, and despite its generous 7cm depth, is easy to roll-up and store away when not in use.

Loaf duck feather topper: £75, Loaf

If you’ve got a too-firm mattress that could benefit from the soft touch, then you really can’t go wrong with a feather topper. Especially if the orthopaedic support of memory foam isn’t a must-have.

Duck feathers are naturally warming as well as having excellent breathability. We loved sink-in feeling you get with this cloud-like layer from Loaf, although cosiness wins here. We wouldn’t necessarily recommend it to mask an overly lumpy mattress.

A square pocket design prevents the moving and bunching of the feathers within the topper and the soft cotton cover is strokeably smooth. This reasonably priced topper is also available up to super king size, and even with the bigger sizes, you’ll still have change from £100.

Buy now

Silentnight memory foam topper: £75, Silentnight

Silentnight’s topper range includes a goose down and hollowfibre-fill, but if you prefer the reactive feel of memory foam, we found this one to be a good mid-price buy. A hypoallergenic cover defends against bed bugs and dust mites, and it can be whipped off and washed in the machine.

We tested the 2.5cm topper and it moulded gently to the shape of our body as we slept. If you suffer from achy limbs and are looking for maximum support, the thicker topper at 5cm might be a better option.

Despite this topper not having elastic securing straps unlike most of the others we tested, once tucked in with a tight fitted sheet, it stayed in place perfectly perched on top of the mattress.

Buy now

The Wool Room deluxe wool mattress topper, £169.99, The Wool Room

There are many benefits to choosing wool bedding over synthetic fabrics, and we were totally won over by them when trying this 5cm topper.

Crammed inside the organic cotton cover is 1,000gsm of premium British Downs wool, and this all-natural material works to disperse body heat and reduce moisture for a cooler, comfier sleep. It felt premium and utterly snuggly under the body.

What’s more, this topper has the stamp of approval from Allergy UK for being hypoallergenic and naturally resistant to dust mites and mould that aggravate allergies. You can sleep assured that you’ll wake snuffle free.

The verdict: Mattress toppers

For being a good-value all-rounder that’s comfy for every sleeping position, Soak and Sleep’s ultimate topper gets our IndyBest best buy accolade. The hybrid topper from Simba was our favourite foam option, and if you’re willing to splash the cash, we can confirm that Naturalmat’s tremendous topper, is in fact, tremendous.

The comfort of your mattress is key to a good night’s sleep, but upgrading from a lumpy bed can get pricey. If you have no choice over your mattress, such as in a college dormitory, care facility, or extended time away from home, a mattress topper can make an otherwise unbearable mattress much more comfortable. The right one can give you pillow-like softness if your bed is too hard, or add firmness if you need more support. There are even comfortable options with temperature-regulating features if you sleep too hot or cold.

Toppers lay across your mattress and are kept in place by your fitted sheet. They are basically a mini-mattress that lays on top of the mattress you already own to help make your bed more comfortable. On the other hand, mattress pads are fitted to the bed, typically provide less support, and can protect against stains or spills. Because both are on top of your mattress, they can actually help extend the life of your mattress.

The Textiles Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute researched dozens of mattress toppers and evaluated benefits and features to find the best. We narrowed down the list to brands we trust from past in-house test performance, and rounded up popular picks with rave reviews from real shoppers. Here are the best mattress toppers you can buy in 2019:

Best Featherbed Mattress Topper: Parachute Down Feather Bed

What are the most comfortable mattress toppers?

Just like how not everyone will like the same mattress, you have to find the most comfortable mattress topper for you. There are a few key considerations to keep in mind when mattress topper shopping:

Material will have the biggest effect on not only the feel of the mattress topper, but also the price. We outlined the most common mattress topper materials:

  • Memory foam: Solid memory foam is popular for conforming to your body to offer back support and relieve pressure points. If you tend to move around while sleeping or get up constantly in the middle of the night, the memory foam will stay still to not wake up a sleeping partner.
  • Feather: Mattress toppers can be filled with feathers or down from ducks or geese. Feather mattress toppers are less supportive than memory foam, but are usually more plush. If you are a huge down pillow fan, try a down mattress topper too.
  • Fiber/ down-alternative: If you have an allergy or sensitive to down, down alternative is a great option for a similar feel. Down-alternative mattress toppers are typically more affordable than down options, so also a great money-saving pick.

Thickness is also important to consider. Mattress toppers range from just 1 to nearly 6 inches thick. If you really hate your mattress, a thicker option will offer more support, but if you’re just looking for a bit of an upgrade, opt for a thinner model. A quality mattress topper should be at least 2 inches thick, so we made sure all of our picks check that box.

Best Overall Mattress Topper

Tempur-Pedic Tempur ProForm Supreme Mattress Topper

Tempur-Pedic Tempur ProForm Supreme Mattress Topper Tempur-Pedic $299.00 $227.24 (24% off)

Tempur-pedic material is famous for its motion transfer reduction — you may remember those Tempur-Pedic commercials of someone jumping on a bed beside a motionless glass of wine — so you’ll be less likely to feel your partner tossing and turning. It’s super firm, but online reviewers raved about the dense, 3-inch topper that covered every corner of their mattress. One reviewer wrote it keeps her in place all night long: “Often times, I wake up in the exact same position I laid down in, meaning I slept the whole night through without shifting around trying to relieve uncomfortable pressure points.”

Best Value Mattress Topper

Linenspa Gel-Infused Memory Foam Mattress Topper

Linenspa Gel-Infused Memory Foam Mattress Topper Linenspa $39.99

For about the same cost as a tank of gas, the LinenSpa Infused Memory Foam topper will add a “plush” memory foam layer to your bed that users say is comfortable and soft while still being supportive. The 2-inch thick polyurethane memory foam is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it’s free of known harmful substances like heavy metals and formaldehyde. It’s also infused with gel, which can help keep the topper cool (unlike some memory foam that tends to trap heat). It doesn’t come with a cover, but you can put it inside a mattress protector with your existing mattress to help keep everything in place.

Best Featherbed Mattress Topper

Parachute Down Feather Bed

Parachute Down Feather Bed Parachute $349.00

For those who are looking for pillow-top comfort instead of foam, this 3-inch bed topper is filled with two layers of 550 fill power down and feathers inside a cotton shell, while baffle box construction keeps the down clusters evenly distributed. Now about the fill inside: The down is certified by the Responsible Down Standard to ensure the ducks and geese receive humane treatment, and the fabric is certified by Oeko-Tex so you know there are no unsafe levels of harmful chemicals. If you’re looking to save a bit or have related allergies, the brand also sells this in a down alternative version made with microfiber fill.

Best Machine Washable Mattress Topper

Sufuee Down Alternative Mattress Topper

Sufuee Down Alternative Mattress Topper Sufuee $89.59 $65.99 (26% off)

This topper is made with a synthetic down alternative fill and a microfiber cover, making it less expensive, good for those with down allergies, and safe to be machine washed and dried (just make sure to use a large capacity machine and cold water). The two-inch plush material is ideal for firm mattresses, adding a fluffy pillow-top feel to your bed, and the stitching prevents shifting and helps keep the fill well-distributed. Unlike other toppers, it comes with elastic straps to help keep it in place on your bed. Just note that some said they were difficult to put on and felt the topper already stayed in place without the straps.

Best Temperature-Adjustable Mattress Topper

Sleep Number DualTemp Individual Layer

Sleep Number DualTemp Individual Layer Sleep Number $899.99

Here’s the solution for the thermostat war in your house: Each of these half-size toppers is temperature controlled, so you can choose to keep things extra-warm on one side and cooler on the other. A floor unit sends the hot or cool air to the mattress topper through a tube. Just note, this pad is pricey and only takes up half the bed. You’ll need to buy two if both partners want to control their side, meaning that it could end up costing you more than a new mattress. But, the technology is unlike any other we’ve seen and those who have purchased it say it’s well worth the investment.

Best Hybrid Mattress Topper

Sleep Innovations Dual Layer Mattress Topper

Sleep Innovations Dual Layer Mattress Topper Sleep Innovations $70.39

Get the benefits of having a soft and firm topper with this option from Sleep Innovations that comes with two layers. The bottom is 2 inches of memory foam for support and pressure relief, while the top layer is 2 inches of fiberfill for cloud-like comfort. The two layers are held in place with a cover, which is removable and machine washable, though some users noted it pilled after they cleaned it. Still, it has over 2,500 rave reviews on Amazon with average rating of 4.3 stars, with verified buyers swearing it has relieved their aches and back pain.

Best Temperature-Regulating Mattress Topper

SleepBetter Iso-Cool Memory Foam Mattress Topper

SleepBetter SleepBetter Iso-Cool Memory Foam SleepBetter $192.27

If you’re worried about overheating from a memory foam mattress topper, try this one with temperature-regulating benefits. The cover has Outlast technology, a finish that stores and releases your body heat to help keep you at a comfortable temperature throughout the night. Inside there’s low density memory foam, meaning it’s softer than what you may expect from a firm foam. There’s also polyester fiberfill for extra plush comfort. The topper comes with a stretchy fabric on the sides so you can easily secure it onto your mattress, and the cover is machine washable.

The quality of your bed is the most important factor when it comes to getting a good night’s rest. However, if you’ve been waking up still feeling exhausted after a long night’s sleep, or if you’re just searching for a way to feel a little more comfortable at night, you don’t have to trash your entire mattress and start from scratch. You can just buy a new mattress topper.

Sometimes, we just need to change things up. Sometimes you want to just change up your decor, or sometimes you truly need a change in order to feel better throughout the day. Mattress toppers aren’t just for college kids on a budget or the guest room; mattress toppers can truly transform your mattress and help you sleep better at a low cost. In this breakdown, we’ll showcase some of our favorite mattress toppers that you can buy, from the mid-$20s all the way up to $400.

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Topper Supreme mattress topper

If you’re looking for brand recognition in addition to a high-quality mattress topper, Tempur-Pedic’s Tempur-Topper Supreme is likely the first topper you should consider. It features 3 inches of loft, so you’ll want to drift off to sleep as soon as you lay down. Still, it’s made with premium memory foam, so you know you’ll be supported all night long. Support is key when it comes to mattress toppers; while you want a comfortable and soft mattress, you don’t want it so soft that your joints and muscles are left unsupported, leaving you sore and in pain in the morning. And once you fall in love with your memory foam mattress topper, you might want to check out some memory foam pillows, too.

Authentic Comfort 2-inch 5-zone mattress topper

Far and away the most inexpensive choice on this list, Authentic Comforts has created a mattress topper that targets specific zones in your body to provide comfort and softness where you want it, yet support and firmness where you need it. With a 2-inch loft, this contoured memory foam mattress topper is great for side sleepers specifically, as side sleepers need something that provides softness in the hips and shoulders and firmness around the lower back and legs to provide support to your spine. Most people wake up in the morning feeling sore not because their mattress is too hard, but because it’s too soft.

LUCID memory foam mattress topper

If you’re intrigued by the idea of a zoned mattress topper but you have a little more money to work with, you may want to check out the 2-inch memory foam topper by LUCID. Sleeping too hot is one of the most common reasons for sleep troubles, and there are few things more frustrating than waking up in the middle of the night tired, sweaty and unable to go back to sleep. LUCID mitigates that problem by infusing its memory foam with gel, which increases airflow between the mattress topper, your mattress and you, keeping you asleep longer and falling asleep quicker. This contoured mattress topper also features five zones, giving each part of your body as much focus as the last.

SleepJoy 2-inch ViscO2 memory foam mattress topper

If the idea of a contoured mattress topper seems a little too out there for you, or if you’re a stomach or back sleeper who doesn’t need quite so much targeted support, why not try a traditional loaf memory foam mattress topper? SleepJoy’s ViscO2 memory foam mattress topper comes in the traditional 3-inch model, but it also has a ventilated version if you’re an especially hot sleeper. If you’re a fan of memory foam pillows, you know that you typically have the choice between a loaf memory foam pillow and shredded foam. The latter choice features much more air circulation and cooling ability, but you likely won’t find a shredded memory foam topper, so going with a ventilated choice is your next best option.

DreamFoam 2-inch memory foam mattress topper

The marbling on DreamFoam’s 2-inch memory foam mattress topper isn’t just to look fancy (though it does look fancy, too). The blue pattern you see throughout this mattress topper is actually gel. Gel-infused memory foam has become quite common, and that’s a good thing for us hot sleepers. This type of memory foam offers all the softness and support you get from memory foam, but you’re also getting the extra cooling technology and airflow that gel offers. If you want something a little loftier and you’re looking for added comfort, check out DreamFoam’s 3-inch model of its gel-infused memory foam mattress topper, though expect your wallet to get a little lighter.

Novaform Gel Memory Foam 3 Inch Mattress Topper

If you’re working with a bigger budget, you can afford to spruce up your mattress to luxury levels, even if you’ve got an older or slightly uncomfortable mattress now (might we suggest some great mattress deals?). The Novaform gel memory foam mattress is a good upgrade to the DreamFoam mattress topper, with similar features like gel-infused memory foam and a 3-inch loft. Novaform has made a name for itself in the mattress topper game, and plenty of its customers even purchase two toppers — one for their bedroom and one in a twin size to take on the road. If you suffer from back and neck pain, you shouldn’t let yourself suffer anymore; just take the plunge. Few things are as important as sleep, so don’t skimp on something that will verifiably increase your quality of life.

Memory foam alternatives

Pacific Coast Feather Company mattress topper

If the cushiony softness of the Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattress topper sounded interesting, this might be the mattress topper for you. Down is one of the softest fillings out there, which makes it perfect for stomach sleepers in particular. This is a feather mattress topper, which makes it a little less luxurious than down, but you’re still getting that cloud-like softness, you’ll sink into your mattress but you also won’t be breaking the bank on expensive down. And, since you’re not using this as a pillow but as a mattress topper, you likely won’t notice any major differences. Pacific Coast’s mattress topper is giving you the down pillow experience, but for your entire body.

ExceptionalSheets bamboo-derived rayon mattress topper

If you’re interested in the environment and patronizing companies that make an effort to use sustainable materials, ExceptionalSheets a the mattress topper you might like. This mattress topper is chiefly made with rayon, but it has elements of bamboo, which is soft, comfortable, and is a fast-growing and abundant natural material. The topper is stuffed with down alternative, just like the Pacific Coast topper, so this is another tempting option for anyone who loves feather and down. If you’re sensitive or have allergies, the type of fiberfill used in this topper is hypoallergenic and perfect if you’re sensitive to real down.

Bluestone 4-inch down feather mattress topper

If you’re looking for the most authentically down experience while you sleep, Bluestone has the topper for you. With 4 inches of loft and filled with 5% down, 95% duck feathers, you’ll feel like you’re sleeping on a total-body down pillow. This topper has the ability to completely transform your mattress, and though you’re spending more on this topper than most others on this list, the money invested will pay off big time. The only problem? You’ll never want to get out of bed in the morning.

Birch Plush Pillow Top

This is far and away the most expensive mattress topper on this list, but for good reason. Pillow-top mattresses are wildly popular because you get the firmness of your mattress, but you still have a similar experience as sleeping on a down mattress topper. And, if you think you haven’t heard of Birch, think again; its parent company is Helix, known for having a huge variety of mattresses and a Sleep Quiz to help you navigate those mattresses. So, you’ve got brand recognition and trust, but you’ve also got an incredibly comfortable, high quality, and natural mattress topper. Birch is named for the birch wool it uses in its products, so you can feel even better knowing you’re purchasing a product that’s made with natural materials, too.

Still need to spice up your bedroom – so you can get some sleep? Ditch the mattress topper altogether and try some of the best mattresses. And if you’re familiar with our curated deals page and you’ve been following our sleep content on The Manual, you likely know we love giving you a good deal and helping you sleep better in the process.

Topper vs. Pad vs. Protector vs. Encasement

There is some confusion as to the difference between toppers, pads, protectors and encasement’s. Lets take a quick look at each:

The mattress topper is generally a more expensive, thicker and more comfortable version of the typical mattress pad. You may have tried mattress pads in the past and been disappointed, well, the new mattress toppers are a great improvement over what you’ve tried in the past and definitely are worth a second look.

A mattress pad is generally a cheaper, thinner version of the mattress topper, they do not tend to add as much comfort but they have other features that many mattress toppers do not have including special heating and cooling features. Some people will opt for a topper and some for a pad, there are many different products for all different kind of people.

Pillow and mattress protectors are generally used to protect these items from bed-wetting or from allergic reactions. These features can be had with toppers and pads, or they may need to be an added feature.

A mattress encasement on the other hand is often used to protect our beds from bed bugs, and are often used in hotels as you might expect. If you’ve had bed bug problems in the past you may want to look into mattress encasements, however they are quite distinct from a topper.

Mattress Topper/Pad Buying Guide

Words like mattress topper and mattress pad are often used to denote the same thing colloquially, but a topper is different than a pad, generally more expensive and more comfortable as well; the thickness and comfort level provided are quite superior. If you’ve tried cheap mattress pads in the past and been disappointed, you are not alone. But a lot has changed in the last few years in this industry; our aim is of course to bring everyone up to speed so they can figure out the best possible solution for their particular needs.

A mattress toppers main purpose is to provide a better night’s sleep for its owners at a cost that most anyone can afford, rather than buying a new mattress. And these items definitely do provide instant relief and comfort, they truly are worth the money.

Price ranges for a mattress topper will run the gamut from under $100 to several hundreds of dollars, but they really can work miracles on your old mattress. Older mattresses tend to get worn out over time and begin to refuse to conform to our bodies, and when that happens we tend to wake to a lot more aches and pains.

Mattress toppers are generally built mostly for comfort, where pads are built to protect your mattress from wear and tear as well as from moisture.

Types of Mattress Toppers

Some mattress toppers are made of a type of gel material which will be cooling for the body during the night. If you sweat heavily or your body temperature runs higher then this may be a good options for you. And some use a technology called Outlast.

Memory Foam

Memory Foam is very durable and conforming to your body so it actually provides excellent support. The drawbacks might be the initial unpacking smell and the fact that it may trap excess body heat, if these types of issues may bother you this might not be the right material for you.

Pillow Top

This type of topper is generally less firm and thick than some other types, it is also less expensive. If you want to try a mattress topper and see if it’s for you, this could be a good entryway point for you, this way you’re not dropping a ton of money.

These types are very versatile and are considered a green product, so if you are looking for something earth friendly then you should definitely look into something like this. It is also considered a firmer choice for extra support as well, latex models can be of the finest quality and very high end, however there can be an initial odor when unpacking.

These toppers are made from goose feathers and as you would imagine they do a great job of softening a very firm mattress. Support is variable and some will find it spotty, and cost will vary quite a bit. These are generally not good for those of us with certain allergies.

Fiber mimics the feel of feathers but uses a material that is modern and that is also more importantly hypoallergenic. These are quite supportive and affordable, these are a good cheaper option for many people.

Wool is extremely durable and has the advantage of both keeping you cool when it’s hot and warmer in the cold months. It has a price point in the moderate range and durability is on the high side, however, it’s not as easy getting this type of material into place on top of the bed.

Latex and wool toppers can be certified organic or they may not be, its up to you to do your homework on the company and manufacturer. True organics may be hard to find, however you should be able to find a large number of green materials.

Mattress Topper Pros and Cons

  • A mattress topper can often restore like new quality to an old and worn out mattress and greatly improve sleep quality.
  • There are a wide variety of price points, features, and benefits to fit a wide audiences needs and wants.
  • These can also help you sleep more deeply by limiting motion from your partner as well as helping people with back pain.

  • Price points on top of the line mattress toppers can get pretty expensive, creeping up into the hundreds of dollars.
  • You will generally not find heating and cooling options like you can with a mattress pad.
  • Warranties tend to be somewhat on the shorter side with most lasting between one and five years.

Types of Mattress Pads

Mattress pads will fit to your baby’s crib, ensuring a better night’s sleep for your infant. If you have a baby who won’t stop crying it’s certainly worth a try, and as always read all the manufacturers directions for safety. Some folks may believe this is dangerous, but if you follow all directions then you should be just fine.

Electric Or Heated

Some of us live in very cold climates or like to keep the heat down in our homes, in fact for some of us it’s very invigorating to sleep in a colder room, however often times we want to stay extra warm while under the covers, a mattress pad of this type could be what you’ve been searching for. You get the best of both worlds here.

Cooling pads can get quite elaborate and costly. Some using fans to blow cold air up through the bed and others actually using a liquid system.

A fitted mattress pad will form fit specifically to your bed and will much more easily stay in place. Often times people who have tried mattress pads complain that they will not stay in place, this type of pad solves that issue. If you toss and turn at night then please look at something that will more easily stay in place.

In search for a more permanent fit to the bed? This type of mattress pad has four anchors which attach underneath each of the four corners of the bed. If you’ve tried a fitted solution and that didn’t work then perhaps it’s time to try anchors.

Guaranteed To Fit

This is the ultimate in fitting for your mattress. It is similar to an anchor model however it will expand to perfectly fit any size bed. If you’re not sure what size your bed might be then you’ll want to upgrade to this type of pad.

Mattress Pad Pros and Cons

  • Mattress pads are within the budget of just about everyone and will add comfort and some protection.
  • Ability to have heated or warming features.
  • Because of the lower cost you won’t worry much about a warranty or the item being damaged, which can often be the case if you don’t pay close attention to your dryer settings.
  • With a mattress pad you will be sacrificing a modicum of support and comfort.
  • Mattress pads aren’t made to be as durable as a more expensive mattress topper.
  • Because these pads are thinner the chances of being woken in the night by your partner is more likely, especially for light sleepers.

Firm Or Soft?

The firm or soft debate will rage on and on for eternity, the simple fact is that you need to find what works for you.

Firmness supports the back, and softness helps with contouring to your body, each is important to address back pain. In general it is thought that back sleepers need a firmer mattress, side sleepers need something on the soft side, and stomach sleepers need something in the middle. However, many of us are combination sleepers, so your individuality will be your best guide.

If you have a slipped disc or something serious in your spine’s alignment then you will want to get something firmer and with a higher density rating.

Of course, what mattress topper you choose may also depend on the firmness of your mattress, as we can plainly see there are multiple variables at play. If you’re confused you may want to consult your doctor or your chiropractor, a good medical professional should really be consulted if you have a serious health issue.

You may want to check: The Best Mattresses for Combination Sleepers

Mattress Toppers For Side Sleepers

Side sleepers will tend to twist the body at night and sleep at strange angles, and they will often need more support than back sleepers. So we would recommend a memory form or latex support topper for side sleepers. If you awaken with pain in your mid-back and underneath your ribs then you’re not getting enough support from your current mattress. You may also have neck pain as well, this can sometimes be solved with the appropriate pillow, however a memory foam topper will also aid in supporting your neck as well.

If you have serious back pain and are a side sleeper you should go with a thicker an denser option, if your back is fairly well aligned you could opt for something softer, like wool or fiber.

Mattress Toppers For Sofa Beds

There is nothing worse than having an uncomfortable sofa bed for your guests to sleep on, but many of us are in this situation and with little time to remedy it. Don’t go and buy a brand new sofa bed, these are extremely heavy and expensive and just a big all around hassle.

Try the Queen Sleeper Sofa Mattress Pad Cotton Top made specifically for sofa beds and if you not sure of the sizing then you may want to look into guaranteed fit models as sofa beds will often be of odd sizes.

If you’re pressed for cash you could so with a more affordable mattress pad but make sure it’s hypoallergenic for your guests.

We hope that you have a much better understanding of mattress toppers and pads and you have a nice bird’s eye view of all of your options. There is a lot of information to process and a lot of choices to consider.

As with most things in life you often get what you pay for, so it’s good advice to choose something that is at least modestly priced or you may wind up having to purchase a similar item at a later date.

When choosing a product it’s also a good idea to read the reviews and read between the lines too. If a product has many good reviews and a handful of bad ones, then you can feel more confident when buying. Many people don’t read all the instructions that come with a product and then they are upset when the product is ruined, however, it is not the manufacturers fault; it is the fault of the customer. CHECK TO MAKE SURE IT IS WASHER/DRYER FRIENDLY.

In review, we recommend mattress toppers with a density rating of at least 4 for those with bad back problems. Also, there are some great priced mattress pads out there but they may not be thick enough for serious back problems. Of course, they are more affordable but often times they do not post any warranty information or many not have any warranty. The more expensive the product the longer the warranty will be, in general.

So always take into account the over-all value of the purchase and not just the price. If you use your common sense and know what you really want you can’t go wrong despite all of the information over load.

Those who have had a mattress for a few years might get to a point where the firmness and feel just aren’t working for anymore. If a new mattress isn’t in the budget just yet, or the mattress is still in good enough shape that one can’t justify purchasing a whole new one, then what can one do?

A mattress topper is a great way to spruce up an existing mattress without having to buy a new mattress, and it can add that pressure relief or contouring that has been missing.

There are many quality mattress toppers out there that could be the perfect addition to a mattress and, out of the toppers I have reviewed, there are five that really stand out among the rest.

Top Picks Explained

Those who think a mattress topper could work for them should take a look at my top picks for mattress toppers – there is no one mattress topper for everyone, so read on to find the right fit for each type of sleeper.

Memory Foam For Hot Sleepers

One of the main drawbacks of memory foam mattresses is that they can make sleepers heat up at night, and memory foam toppers have this same problem.

Those who want a memory foam mattress topper that does not trap heat should take a look at the Layla Mattress Topper as it features copper-infused memory foam and a cover infused with Thermogel. Copper helps with heat dissipation and the Thermogel is cool to the touch, so most people shouldn’t be sleeping too hot on the Layla memory foam mattress topper.

In addition, copper is antimicrobial, meaning it helps fight the growth of bacteria and mildew, keeping the topper clean for years to come.

Finally, the Layla adds some serious comfort and pressure relief to a mattress: it is 2″ of very soft memory foam, so when sleepers are on their back, they should feel some great contouring and, when they are on their side, they should feel much less pressure on their shoulders and hips.

What Makes The Layla Stand Out?

  • It features copper-infused memory foam and a Thermogel-infused cover, and both should help with cooling.
  • The topper features four anchor straps that should keep the Layla secured to the mattress all night.
  • Copper is antimicrobial and will prevent bacteria and mildew growth in the topper.
  • The Layla should be a great match for both back sleepers and side sleepers.

The Layla is a great option for hot sleepers who want a memory foam feel.

Most Durable

When searching for a mattress topper, it’s always important to consider durability – basically, will the mattress topper break down in a year or will it last for a significant amount of time?

Those who want a topper that will last for a long time should consider the Avocado which features 2″ of Dunlop latex, a very durable material. Unlike some memory foam toppers, the Avocado shouldn’t sag.

Latex also offers naturally cooling properties: the Avocado’s Dunlop latex is ventilated to promote airflow, the cover is breathable, and the wool layer is moisture-wicking.

The Avocado is also a fantastic option if someone wants a green, eco-friendly mattress topper because the Dunlop latex is all-natural and free of harmful chemicals.

Back sleepers should also find the Avocado to be a good match because, while it doesn’t add too much softness to the mattress, it does add a good amount of contouring. Back sleepers should feel that nice balance of comfort and support on the Avocado mattress topper.

What Makes The Avocado Stand Out?

  • The Avocado features Dunlop latex, a very durable material, so this should be a good, long-term investment.
  • The topper contains many features that make it a cooler-sleeping option.
  • The Dunlop latex is all-natural, responsibly sourced, and eco-friendly.
  • The Avocado is a particularly good choice for back sleepers.

The Avocado is an all-natural mattress topper that is a good option for those who want something comfortable and eco-friendly.

Best Feather Bed

The majority of toppers on this list are made of some type of thick foam, but what if someone is looking for a completely different feel?

For those who want something fluffy, airy, and cloud-like, the Parachute Down Feather Bed should be a fantastic choice. It is 3″ tall, contains white down and feathers with a fill power of 550, and adds that pillow-top look and feel to the top of the mattress.

The Parachute is also a great option for hot sleepers because, while there is little room for airflow in many other toppers, this is not the case with the Parachute. The down and feathers promote airflow throughout the topper so that it does not trap heat.

While the mattress topper doesn’t soften the mattress too much, it should be a particularly good match for back sleepers who want to feel somewhat enveloped. It should feel like sleeping on a giant pillow.

What Makes The Parachute Stand Out?

  • The Parachute can add a fluffy, pillow-top look and feel to a mattress.
  • The down and feathers allow for a good amount of airflow, so the Parachute shouldn’t sleep particularly hot.
  • The Parachute is a fantastic option for back sleepers who like a fluffy feel.

The Parachute Down Feather Bed is a soft, fluffy mattress topper that could be a great match for hot sleepers.

Most Affordable

For those who are looking for an affordable mattress topper, the Dreamfoam is a great choice; it is priced under $70 for a Queen-size and is significantly more affordable than the other mattress toppers on this list.

The Dreamfoam contains 2″ of memory foam that adds some serious pressure relief and comfort to the mattress, so back sleepers should feel some extra contouring, while side sleepers should feel much more pressure relief on their shoulders and hips.

In addition, there is a gel swirl that runs throughout the topper and makes it cool to the touch and helps prevent it from trapping too much heat. It is not as cool as the Layla, but the Dreamfoam does take steps to keep sleepers from running too hot.

While the Dreamfoam might not last the longest, it is a quick way to update a mattress for a value price.

What Makes The Dreamfoam Stand Out?

  • The mattress topper is a great choice for those who want something more affordable.
  • The Dreamfoam 2″ topper is very soft and adds significant comfort to the mattress.
  • The mattress topper should be a particularly good match for back and side sleepers.

Read the full Dreamfoam mattress topper review.

Dreamfoam Mattress Topper Deals Dreamfoam Mattress Topper Dreamfoam Mattress Topper

The Dreamfoam is a soft memory foam mattress topper. It is a great fit for back and side sleepers.

Best For Heavy People

Unlike many of the other toppers on this list, the Saatva contains two layers, not just one; the top layer is soft memory foam, and the bottom is a transition foam.

This makes the topper a good option for heavier-weight sleepers – heavier people often have issues bottoming out on softer mattress toppers, but the Saatva’s transition layer eases sleepers down to the mattress.

The dual layers also make the Saatva a good choice for back sleepers and side sleepers. Back sleepers should enjoy good lumbar support while their hips sink in just the right amount, and side sleepers should feel nice pressure relief on their shoulders and hips without hitting the actual mattress.

The top layer of memory foam also contains graphite which adds some cooling qualities to the topper so it doesn’t trap so much heat.

What Makes The Saatva Stand Out?

  • The Saatva graphite-infused mattress topper features two layers instead of only one.
  • The Saatva should be a good choice for larger people, and they shouldn’t bottom out.
  • Back sleepers and side sleepers should find the Saatva to be a particularly good match.
  • The graphite makes it so the topper doesn’t sleep too hot.

Things To Consider When Buying A Mattress Topper

If someone is looking for a mattress topper, there are a few things they should definitely be thinking about:

  • Feel. A major reason people buy a mattress topper is to update the feel of their mattress. Those who want to slowly sink into the topper should consider something with memory foam and, if they prefer something bouncier, they should think about a mattress topper with latex or a foam topper with latex-like properties. Fans of a fluffier feel might want to take a look at a feather bed or something of that type.
  • Firmness. Another reason to look for a mattress topper is to soften or firm up a mattress but, if someone is looking for some more softness, how much do they want? Those who want something very soft should consider a thicker topper (close to 3″), and those who want just a bit of softness should take a look at something closer to 1″ or 1.5″. People who want something to firm up their mattress should consider a firmer latex option.
  • Durability. When purchasing a mattress topper, shoppers definitely want to know how long it will last, so think about the durability of the materials used in the topper. If it uses a lower density memory foam, the topper might break down very quickly but, if it uses a high-density memory foam or latex, it could last for a good amount of time.
  • Sleeping position. Mattress topper shoppers should think about their specific sleeping position; for instance, back sleepers should want something with a balance of comfort and support, while side sleepers should look for something on the softer side. Stomach sleepers are going to need more support, so consider something that firms up the mattress.
  • Warmth. When adding a mattress topper to a bed, sleepers want to know if it will make them overheat. When deciding on the right topper, make sure it will prevent one from sleeping hot; for instance, if it’s a memory foam topper, does it contain some cooling infusion or is it ventilated for airflow? Sleepers want their mattress topper to be a comfortable addition to their mattress, but not something that makes them sleep hot.

Keeping this information in mind, it should be easy to find the right mattress topper.

Just make sure to think about the desired firmness and feel and keep sleeping position and sleeping temperature in mind. Then, place the topper on the mattress and enjoy a much better night of sleep.

Using a mattress topper is an effective way to improve your bed, and is usually much less expensive than replacing the entire mattress.

If you need to breathe new life into your aging mattress, make it softer or have firmer support for your back, there’s a topper for the job.

At the end of the day, choosing the right topper is a subjective matter, much like picking a mattress.

So below are suggestions for excellent mattress toppers that should improve both your bed and your sleep. You’ll find my recommended low-cost option first, with the more expensive brands further down the list.

1. Linenspa gel infused memory foam

Low-cost memory foam mattress topper designed to reduce heat retention

The Linenspa gel-infused memory foam topper offers an opportunity to try out memory foam at a considerably lower price than some of the more luxury toppers.

With a choice of either 2 or 3 inches thick (I would go with 3 inches if you’re a larger person), this is a topper that will cushion your body, feel soft and still provide support for your body.

So you can drift off to sleep safe in the knowledge that you won’t be bothered by the pain of pressure points. And if you have an old mattress that’s become uncomfortable, it will help hide lumpy parts and reduce the firmness a notch or two.

Here are the key points to consider:

  • It molds well to the shape of your body, both cushioning and supporting you.
  • It provides support for your back and joints to ease pain and pressure points.
  • The foam is CertiPUR US certified for quality.
  • The gel-infused design is better than normal memory foam for hot sleepers.
  • It’s available in 2 inches or 3 inches for maximum body support.
  • Affordable price for a memory foam topper.

For such a reasonable price, it’s hard to complain about the Linenspa mattress topper. It would be good if it came with a cover, but it’s the main memory foam body which is most important.

Do remember that despite being better than standard memory foam toppers in terms of heat build-up, it’s still memory foam at the end of the day. So in a hot bedroom in the summer, you might need additional techniques to tackle the heat.

Overall, this is a good option for adding some extra comfort and body support, whether you’re new to memory foam or are looking for a good quality mattress topper.

2. Exceptional Sheets bamboo mattress pad

Comfortable goose down alternative. Provides softness

The natural bamboo topper by Exceptional Sheets is technically advertised as a pad rather than a topper. However, the terms pad and topper are often interchangeable, with the end result being what really matters.

The pad is particularly soft and comfortable, feeling like goose down and very popular due to this.

It won’t mold to and support your body like a memory foam topper, but it does a pretty good job of providing the fabled ‘sleeping on a cloud’ feeling.

Here are the key features:

  • The inside is made from cluster fiber – little balls of soft fiber which improve ventilation and help maintain shape.
  • It has a silky bamboo blend cover, making it feel even softer under your sheets.
  • It’s a hypoallergenic alternative if you’re allergic to down, but enjoy that level of softness.
  • It can be used on top of either a mattress or a firmer topper such as memory foam or latex.
  • It’s designed with individual boxes of fiber to keep an even shape.
  • It’s easy to clean and machine washable.
  • You get a 30 day return and 1 year exchange warranty.

One point to bear in mind is that if you need to hide unusually large lumps or dips in your current mattress, you might need a thicker topper. This one will disguise some minor signs of usage, but not if the mattress is in bad shape.

If your main goal is to add an extra layer of softness and comfort though, it’s a great option. It will definitely boost the softness of your current mattress and feels wonderful to sleep on.

3. Pure Green latex mattress topper

A high-quality latex mattress topper for a relatively low price

Latex mattress toppers are notoriously pricey. And the cost can increase significantly if you opt for three inches of thickness rather than two, or even a more humble one inch.

So the main reason I’m including the Pure Green before the more luxury Ultimate Dreams (below) is simply the price.

Firstly, the three inch version is cheaper than other latex topper brands I’ve looked at recently. And secondly, you can choose a one or two inch version instead of the full three, which will bring the cost down even more.

They also have soft, medium or firm versions, just to add some more confusion to the choice! Personally, I like the soft version as I’m a side sleeper and it helps make the bed feel more comfortable. If you’re a back sleeper, you might prefer the medium or firm instead.

Essentially, this is an opportunity to try out latex without breaking the bank. It’s made by a company in Sri Lanka, which perhaps explains the lower price than American made toppers, like the Ultimate Dreams.

Let’s take a look at some of the key details:

  • It’s made from 100% natural latex, with no synthetic materials.
  • It has good durability as it’s made with natural latex.
  • You’ll have a temperature neutral and breathable sleep surface. It won’t actively cool you, but it won’t feel as hot as memory foam either.
  • It’s available in all bed sizes.
  • You can choose a one, two or three inch thickness.
  • There’s a soft, medium or firm version available too.
  • It feels very comfortable to sleep on, with the soft version both supporting the body and making a hard mattress feel much better.

I think the only real downside is that it’s a little confusing working out which size to choose! Personally, I think one inch is arguably too little, unless you already have a soft enough bed and just want a little extra support.

I think two inches is enough, but three better if you’re a heavier person or have serious issues with pressure points. As for softness, I think that’s purely personal preference. I went with the soft two inch king size and liked how it breathed new life into my mattress.

4. Ultimate Dreams Talalay latex topper

High-quality latex mattress topper to improve both the comfort and support of your bed

Made in the United States by the Dreamfoam bedding company, the excellent Ultimate Dreams latex mattress topper ticks all the right boxes for comfort, support, and durability.

It’s a healthy 3 inches thick, which will go a long way to hiding any lumps or dips in your current mattress. And you have three choices of firmness to choose from, depending on your personal preferences.

The soft version is at the lower end of the scale for firmness, adding a comforting layer of softness when you sleep. The medium provides a good combination of softness and support for pressure points, in my opinion.

And the firm option is ideal for those who seek a solid supportive surface rather than the sleeping on a cloud effect.

Here are the key points to consider:

  • It’s very comfortable and supportive for your body.
  • You can choose the level of firmness you need.
  • The material itself is a quality blended latex, made from 40% natural latex and 60% synthetic latex.
  • It’s hypoallergenic, ideal for allergy sufferers.
  • It comes with a soft and elegant bamboo fabric case.
  • You have a 45 day comfort warranty, so you can return it if you’re not satisfied.
  • The latex is durable and will last for a long time without sagging.
  • It’s heavy enough to stay in place on your current mattress.
  • It’s breathable and doesn’t retain heat like memory foam toppers.

Overall, this is an impressive mattress topper: it’s solidly constructed with high-quality materials, with enough choice to get the exact level of support you need.

Latex is arguably superior to memory foam when it comes to providing the best support for your body, particularly if you suffer from back pain or pressure points.

So if you’re looking for a serious upgrade to your bed and the most comfortable surface possible to sleep on, the Ultimate Dreams latex topper is one I highly recommend.

My only caveat is that it’s a luxury topper that’s only available in the larger 3 inch size, making it more expensive than other brands like the Pure Green (above). And as noted above, it’s a blend with some synthetic latex added.

5. Sleep & Beyond organic merino wool topper

Luxury organic merino wool topper. Good body support and temperature regulation

If you’re not keen on synthetic materials such as memory foam or polyester, wool deserves a close look when selecting a mattress topper.

With an organic cotton jacquard encasement and filling of organic merino wool, the Sleep & Beyond mattress topper embodies both quality design and materials.

The result is a satisfying balance of luxurious feel, additional body support for your mattress and good temperature regulation in both the summer and winter.

Here are the key points to note:

  • The inside is organic merino wool. The exterior encasement is 100% cotton.
  • At 1.5 inches thick, it adds some extra comfort while allowing easy movement in bed.
  • It provides firm, yet comfortable support for your body.
  • Hypoallergenic and more resistant to mildew and dust mites than most topper materials.
  • It’s durable and should last for many years.
  • The breathable materials will help keep your temperature at a comfortable level.

The main downside is that the topper is only 1.5 inches thick. So although it will add some comfortable padding and support, it won’t fix a significantly lumpy mattress. And it might not be thick enough if you’re looking for as much soft padding as you can possibly squeeze into one topper.

A wool mattress topper of this size is a good choice if you need to add some extra body support and comfort without creating too thick a surface to sink into. And unlike memory foam, it won’t sleep too hot in the warmer months of the year, while still being cozy in the colder.

Overall, this is a carefully made topper with high-quality natural materials that will improve your sleeping surface and hopefully your sleep along with it.

6. Sleep Innovations 4 inch dual layer

Combination of memory foam and fiber-fill. Will soften a hard mattress

If your aim is to increase the softness of your bed with a mattress topper, the Sleep Innovations dual layer offers exactly that. And it will still provide excellent support for your body.

It’s important to note that it’s not just one topper that’s 4 inches thick. It consists of 2 separate toppers (each 2 inches thick) which work best in combination.

The bottom layer is a 3 lb density memory foam, probably best described as medium firmness, and molds well to your body.

The top layer is a plush fiber-fill, neatly separated into boxed sections. And the top section feels lovely and soft to lie on.

Here are the key points to consider:

  • You have the choice of using memory foam or fiber-fill, or combining them for extra softness.
  • The combined 4 inches is more than enough to completely change the feel of your current mattress.
  • It’s an effective way to soften the feel of a firm mattress.
  • The memory foam molds quickly to your body, providing some support for pressure points.
  • The top cover also acts as a fitted sheet, stretching tightly over the foam section and mattress to keep both layers in place.
  • The top cover is machine washable.
  • It comes with a 10 year warranty.

My only criticism is the promise of gel cooling. It might be better than some memory foam mattress toppers in terms of heat retention, but in very hot weather you’ll still need to tackle the room temperature with air conditioning or other methods.

That aside, the main aim of this topper is to soften your mattress, and it does that very effectively. And since the softness doesn’t come at the expense of support for your body, it’s a good choice no matter which position you like to sleep in.

And the fact that you can choose between different styles (memory foam, fiber-fill or both) means you can conveniently experiment with different levels of support.

Best Mattress Toppers – Our Picks and Buyer’s Guide

Pros and Cons of Using a Mattress Topper

Mattress toppers can make a huge difference for sleepers, ranging from alleviating pain and pressure to creating an experience that regulates body temperature. There are also the less advertised pros, such as less noise and even better responsiveness for sex.

Pros of using a mattress topper on an existing mattress include the following:

  • Improved Sleep Surface: Toppers can add comfort to old mattress surfaces that have developed some sagging or indentations over time, as well as newer models that are too soft or firm for its current sleepers.
  • More Support: Mattresses made of materials like memory foam or latex can help create and maintain a stable, even sleep surface with enhanced neck and back support.
  • Pain and Pressure Relief: Some mattress toppers, such as memory foam and latex models, conform closely to sleepers bodies. This helps align the spine and target pressure points in the neck, shoulders, lower back, and hips.
  • Dual Comfort Options: For mattresses that are not designed with a dual-firmness comfort layer, a topper can be an inexpensive way to modify the feel of one side while maintaining the original firmness of the other.
  • Increased Durability: Utilizing a mattress topper can help extend the lifespan of a mattress by reducing sagging and indentations in the comfort layer.
  • Mattress Protection: Although they are primarily intended to add extra comfort, mattress toppers can create a buffer that protects the top surface of a mattress from stains, soiling, and physical damage.
  • Minimal Noise: With the exception of featherbeds, which may produce rustling sounds, mattress toppers produce little to no noise when bearing weight.
  • Better Sex: With the exception of memory foam toppers (which are considered less-than-ideal for sex), toppers are generally considered responsive enough for sex.
  • Inexpensive Alternative to Replacement: Most mattress toppers cost less than $200, but even the most expensive toppers — such as wool and latex models — rarely exceed $400. As a result, using a topper is much cheaper than replacing the mattress completely.
  • Cooling Effect: Many mattress toppers have gel features or other cooling and aeration technology that will keep you from overheating at night, ensuring a deeper night’s sleep.

Despite the benefits of using a mattress topper listed above, there are also some drawbacks associated with these products. You may overestimate how much the topper can help your sleeping situation if you have a mattress that badly needs replacing. Additionally, some toppers may not fit your bed very well or make it difficult for you to move around freely at night.

Here are some of the downsides to look out for:

  • Fitting Issues: Mattress toppers that do not lie freely on the sleep surface are usually smaller than the mattress itself, which allows sheets to fit over them. This may present two issues. One: the sleeper may need to purchase new sheets. Two: the topper may slide around beneath the sheet, depending on how it’s constructed, which can lead to uncomfortable bunching and an uneven surface.
  • Edge Support: Due to the fact that toppers are slightly smaller than mattresses, this may reduce how supportive the bed feels around its perimeter where people tend to sit.
  • Limited Improvements: Although toppers can significantly improve older mattresses with some sagging or indentations, they may not be as effective at changing the feel and comfort level of a mattress with extensive damage.
  • Off-gassing: Some topper types — particularly polyfoam and memory foam models — may emit unpleasant off-gassing odors that eventually dissipate, especially in well-ventilated rooms, but these smells may be persistent.
  • Sleeping Hot: Toppers made of feathers or wool tend to sleep fairly cool, but memory foam, fiber, and latex models tend to retain high levels of body heat and sleep somewhat hot as a result.
  • Difficult to Move: The average topper weighs at least seven or eight pounds, and some topper types — such as latex — often weigh more than 20 pounds. This can make them difficult to move and maneuver during the night, especially if they are tucked beneath fitted sheets.
  • High Maintenance: Mattress toppers are rarely machine washable, and usually need to be either dry cleaned or spot cleaned by hand. Some toppers, such as featherbeds, also require constant fluffing in order to maintain proper loft.

Important Considerations for Topper Shoppers

Next, let’s look at some of the key factors to keep in mind when shopping for a mattress topper and browsing different types, brands, and models:

  • Material: Different mattress topper materials offer different comfort experiences. Memory foam and latex conform closely to the sleeper’s body for improved spinal alignment and pressure relief. Wool and feather toppers do not conform as closely, which creates less resistance for people moving on top of the mattress, and they also sleep somewhat cooler. Shoppers should research the properties of each mattress topper type as they relate to their sleep needs and preferences.
  • Thickness: Mattress toppers may measure anywhere from 1 to 4 inches thick. The thickness of a topper is should correspond to the mattress surface. If the mattress is much too firm for the sleeper, then a thicker topper will be needed to effectively adjust the comfort level. Thinner toppers may be suitable when minor changes are needed. Also, it’s important to note that thicker convoluted foam, memory foam, and latex models tend to sleep somewhat hotter than thinner models.
  • Density: Like thickness, the density of a mattress topper corresponds to other performance factors. High-density memory foam toppers, for instance, offer better edge support and conform closer than low-density foam toppers; however, high-density models also tend to sleep hotter, produce more odor, and not be as good for sex.
  • Firmness: Generally speaking, firmer toppers are ideal for sleepers who find their mattress too soft, while softer toppers work best on overly firm surfaces. However, a topper can also enhance the firmness of an older mattress. For instance, a medium-firm topper used on top of a medium-firm mattress can help preserve the original sleep surface while still maintaining the sleeper’s desired firmness level.
  • Durability: Although lifespan varies by model, most latex, memory foam, and wool mattress toppers are considered fairly durable and will perform for several years without excessive sagging or indenting. Feather and fiber toppers, on the other hand, tend have below-average durability.
  • Motion Isolation: Toppers made of foam or latex tend to absorb motion and isolate it to certain areas of the mattress, which can help reduce sleep disruptions. Feather, fiber, and wool toppers offer minimal motion isolation by comparison.
  • Allergy Potential: Some topper materials, such as latex or feathers, may trigger allergies in certain sleepers. Other topper materials, such as fibers and wool, are hypoallergenic and should not cause allergies to flare up.

Topper Ratings by Material

Mattress toppers are made of a wide variety of materials, from down feathers to memory foam, gel, and even polyester. Each material type has its own benefits and drawbacks. What you like will largely depend on your taste, needs, and sleeping style. In the table below, we’ll examine some key similarities and differences between the six most common mattress topper types.

We all know that a good night’s sleep is important, but for some of us it isn’t as easy as counting sheep. In fact, one in three adults report not getting enough sleep. Unfortunately, getting more z’s often requires big purchases like a new bed, bedding, or smart devices to track sleep data (even a smart bed!). Although the right pillows and a proper mattress can do wonders, they can also come at a hefty price. If purchasing a new mattress is out of the budget, or you just want an extra dose of comfort, a mattress topper could be the solution.

How to Find the Right Topper

Although most people can stand to benefit from a mattress topper, the add-on aren’t guaranteed to magically improve everyone’s sleep. We spoke to Dr. Michael Breus, also known as the Sleep Doctor and a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, for his tips on whether you should buy one to enhance your sleep quality. “It depends upon the topper and the reason you are getting it,” Breus says. “There are firm toppers and soft ones. If you get the right one you may feel more comfortable, which is certainly a benefit, but if you get one that is too soft (even if it’s more comfortable) that may cause a strain on your back, which would be a problem.”

Mattress toppers can not only improve comfort and sleep, but also help to extend the longevity of your mattress. Mattress pads can serve a similar purpose, but they’re thinner and attach to the mattress like a fitted sheet. Some pads are water resistant, acting as an alternative to a full mattress protector. On the other hand, thicker toppers are designed to provide extra cushion and support, almost like a mini mattress.

Types of Toppers

Some toppers use various types of memory foam and exotic materials such as bamboo fiberfill, but the above types of toppers are most common. As for which is the best? “I do not think that there is a best one, but I personally prefer Latex,” said Dr. Breus. “It’s a great foam, it forms to your body, and allows you to move easily, and does not retain heat. (Latex toppers) can be created in firm to soft, whatever a person needs.”

When to Replace Your Topper

It is suggested that you replace your topper every 3 to 5 years. Although that may not seem like a long time, most mattresses last between 5-7 years. But if you hit that 5 year mark and your topper is still working for you, there’s no need to change it out just yet. A good sign that it’s time for some upgraded padding is back or neck pain. Especially with memory foam mattresses, designed to support the curvature of your spine, you may eventually notice a lack of support.

We researched expert sources such as Good Housekeeping, Forbes, and The Spruce, as well as 33,000 customer reviews to select the best mattress toppers of the year. -Best Cooling-

Dreamfoam Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper

Consumer Score: 78% gave it 4 stars or higher
The gel-foam technology gives you support while keeping you cool.

Thickness: 2 or 3 in. | Materials: gel-infused memory foam | Warranty: 3 years

Dreamfoam Bedding DreamFoam Gel Swirl Memory Foam Topper $67.99

  • Supportive memory foam
  • Gel swirl helps keep you cool
  • Too soft for some people

The Dreamfoam topper will have you dancing along with the sugar plums without causing your slumbering body to break a sweat. Memory foam is known for retaining heat, but this gel-infused option works to keep you cool and create air flow through two inches of foam. For those not accustomed to memory foam toppers, this is a great starting point—both in terms of price and thickness. Amazon reviewers claimed that the foam was surprisingly supportive despite being only 2 inches tall. This lower height can also be beneficial to those who shift in their sleep a lot, avoiding the sensation of being stuck while sunken into the foam.

-Most Cushion-

Lucid Gel Memory Foam Topper

Consumer Score: 85% gave it 4 stars or higher
Four inches of memory foam give this topper an unbeatably plush surface.

Thickness: 4 in. | Materials: memory foam | Warranty: 3 years

LUCID Lucid 4-Inch Gel Memory Foam Mattress Topper $102.99

  • Max support and cushion
  • Ventilation allows for breathability
  • May sink into soft, thick foam

The Lucid topper wants you to go big when you go home: With 4 inches of cooling memory foam, it is plush with a capital P. Although the topper is not particularly dense, this serves to its benefit, allowing you to sink down into the foam while it cradles your body. It should be noted that while some customers loved the cradled feeling, others felt it was a bit suffocating. If you move a lot or are a warm sleeper, you might want to try a 2- or 3-inch option, which will allow you to move a bit more freely.

-Most Luxurious-

Super Snooze Feather Mattress Topper

Consumer Score: 87% gave it 4 stars or higher
Make any mattress feel like a luxury pillow with this topper’s layers of down.

Thickness: 5 inches | Materials: cotton, down feathers | 30-day return policy

National Sleep Products Super Snooze 5-inch Feather Topper $95.39

  • Plush feathers enhance mattress
  • Less expensive than memory foam
  • Thick, but not supportive

If you always dread leaving a hotel room or bed-and-breakfast, now you can make your bedroom feel like one. This topper won’t cook you locally-sourced eggs, but it will give you that posh feeling you’d expect from a five-star hotel. It features a 5-inch gusset and its cotton cover has a 230 thread count that will prevent feathers from escaping. You may be surprised to find out that this down topper is less expensive than some premium cushion memory foam options. As pillowy as down may feel, memory foam is still a better option for more firm support. But if a cloud of cotton candy is the feel you’re after, look no further.

-Best Budget-

Linenspa Gel Infused Memory Foam Topper

Consumer Score: 83% gave it 4 stars or higher
A cooling and customizable topper for those on a budget.

Thickness: 2 or 3 inches | Materials: memory foam gel beads | Warranty: 3 years

Linenspa Linenspa Gel-Infused Memory Foam Mattress Topper $39.99

  • Various sizes and thickness options
  • Supportive but not overwhelming
  • May lose support over time

This is a great option for people trying to plump up an old mattress, especially since it comes in hard-to-find sizes such as California King and RV Queen. Since the price is so low, it’s less of a commitment than some of the $200+ models. But don’t be fooled by the price: This topper has a 3-year warranty and a bunch of great reviews to back it up. Many people claimed it spruced up their cheap mattress and compared it to sleeping on a cloud. The Linenspa gel topper is also a great choice for college students. Light and packable, it holds up better than the typical egg crate foam. And the gel keeps it cool—even during a steamy August with no AC.

-Best Temperature Control-

Sleep Number Dual-Temp Individual Layer

Consumer Score: 89% gave it 4 stars or higher
Individual controls let you make your side of the bed up to 35 percent hotter or cooler.

Materials: active air technology | Warranty: 1 year

Sleep Number Dual Temp Individual Layer $899.99

  • Custom temperatures for each side of bed
  • Only a 1 year warranty
  • Makes white noise

People sleep best at different temperatures. For couples, this can often be the cause of late-night arguments. The Sleep Number Dual-Temp layer covers half a bed and allows each individual sleeper to control the temperature to their desire. You can adjust the temperature to be warmer or cooler through a remote and set a timer through one- to nine-hour increments. Reviews mentioned that women suffering from hot flashes found that this allowed them to cool down quickly and get a better night’s sleep. Keep in mind that it requires placing the heating and cooling source under or alongside the bed. Another feature to note is that it makes white noise, so if you are someone who needs silence to sleep, this may not be the option for you.

-Best Down Alternative-

Exceptional Sheets Bamboo-Derived Rayon Mattress Topper

Consumer Score: 80% gave it 4 stars or higher
Get the feel of down cruelty and allergen free.

Materials: bamboo rayon cover, hypoallergenic down alternative filler | Guarantee: 100% satisfaction or money back

ExceptionalSheets Exceptional Sheets Rayon-Derived Bamboo Mattress Pad $79.99

  • Hypoallergenic
  • Sustainable alternative to down
  • No actual support

Do you love the feeling of down bedding but hate that it makes you sneeze? Is quality down is out of your price range? Or do you just prefer purchasing completely vegan products? Whatever your reason, this topper is a top-notch down alternative. Filled with a hypoallergenic fiberfill, it gives the feeling of down without the hefty price. Though it is more expensive than some memory foam options, fiberfill is generally more breathable with a softer surface. Like down, it will not provide the support of memory foam, but it is great for refreshing an old, hard mattress.
