London Fog is one of the top manufacturers of high quality luggage sets in the world. Founded in 1923, it started as a company manufacturing apparels. Later in 1928 it started making waterproof coats for the U.S. Navy during the WWII. In 1950s, it partnered with DuPont to make materials for raincoats then they went public in the 1960s. In 1970s, it sold two thirds of all raincoats in the U.S. From then, it developed more fabrics and explored different kinds of apparel then branched out into several superstores and shops worldwide. Today, it has over 3 generations of customers making this a premier global brand. London Fog started making quality luggage since the 1970s and is now one of the benchmark companies in creating durable luggage sets. “We have also written a complete guide about best travel luggage and suitcases“.

What differentiates London Fog suitcases from other brands?

Coming from a trusted company since WWII, London Fog assures you quality luggage that will not only last for a long time but is durable and sturdy due to its high-end materials. As a leading company since the 1960s, if London Fog can create waterproof apparels and bags, then it can definitely create not just waterproof but durable luggage pieces. Here are the key features or characteristics that one should check on each luggage:

Quality of Material

Not everyone wants nylon or polyester or polycarbonate, but we all prefer either one of those. London Fog always uses the highest quality among those materials so simply decide which one best appeals to you. Nylon or polyester made are all soft-side while polycarbonate is a hard-sided type. A polycarbonate luggage is easy to clean but will have permanent scuffs or scratches. A soft-side polyester can be washed or cleaned when dirt gets over it and scuffs or scratches may not be visible.

London Fog studies the different needs of businessmen and regular travellers. Each piece and set matches ones needs. The size, the inside pockets, the interior division and exterior pockets each serve a purpose for every traveller. In general, London Fog considers the need for extra space so almost all of its luggage sets and pieces are expandable. Besides the weight and size capacity of each traveller, it also considered different travelling conditions thus explains the materials used and the installation of telescoping handles, top, side or bottom handles and even the supporting back panels. The 21-inch pieces are mostly designed for short travels and the expandable 29-inch ones for week-long or staying tourists. Each bag has a capacity to support one or more of documents, apparels, breakable or fragile items and even big items that needs to be travelled.

Size matters as this determines the usability of your luggage. Each luggage has different body dimensions thus limiting one’s capacity. The 21-inch may be just the perfect one for business related travels that require shorter stay and the 29-inch expandle may be a perfect fit for someone looking at a week-long stay. London Fog doesn’t just limit the size for apparels’ use. Considering the need to travel different items for different reasons, London Fog designs its luggage to accommodate such. It also considers all airline luggage guidelines and limitations thus never putting a customer at risks for luggage violations.

London Fog may have started as a clothing company and it still is the company best sought for quality raincoats and outerwear, it doesn’t mean it cannot make anything more than just clothes. Recognizing its capacity to create more, London Fog produces high quality luggage that would match its known reputation of high quality raincoats. The catch? Each London Fog luggage is designed to not just last for a long time but to look good and feel good.

Related: The Best Lightweight Luggage for Traveling

Most hard luggage has a “clamshell” setup, where the bag opens flat, like a book, and there are two similar packing areas, usually with tie-downs or zippered mesh layers. They are easier to clean than fabric bags, and they often come in bright colors or even decorative prints. Travelers who tend to overfill soft-side bags to the point where they won’t fit into an overhead bin might do better with a hardside that keeps its shape — or one that expands and compresses back to carry-on size like magic.

Samsonite Winfield 3-Piece (20/24/28) Suitcase Set

Best Luggage Brand for International Travel: Samsonite

Choosing a lightweight suitcase enables you to pack more without surpassing airline weight restrictions. Four spinner wheels come in handy as you maneuver your bag through the airport.

Planet Lew says: “I have a set of Samsonite 4-wheel spinners. The smallest is cabin size and I use it for up to week-long trips. The middle size is good if I need to take more stuff, and the largest is a bit ridiculous.”

Time and time again, travelers agree that Samsonite is number one on the list of top luggage brands, making it one of the most consistent in terms of suitcase recommendations. It seems as if travelers, particularly like their sets similar to the Winfield 3-piece set, shown above.

These good looking hardside suitcases are lightweight and easy to travel with. The wheels are smooth and are durable enough to last over the years. As a bonus, this set is water-resistant. Buy it here!

Samsonite Omni PC 3-Piece Set (20/24/28) Hardside Spinner

Family travel and lifestyle blogger, Erin Bender from Explore with Erin, shares why Samsonite ranks on her list of the top luggage brands for family traveling.

“We chose 4-wheeler luggage. Not only is it great to push with one finger, but the kids can ride on it, too, which saves us from losing them in the airport. Go with the Samsonite with latch closures; bags with zips break too easily and fragile pieces are in better care in a hard case.”

Sarah-Jane Begonja with Chasing the Donkey also agrees that Samsonite is one of the best luggage brands. “My arthritic spine and fingers always appreciate my 4-wheeler. It rolls along easier and I’ve been known to use it to stack my bottles of booze on top.”

Another popular hardside set is the Samsonite Omni Collection shown above, which is available in a variety of colorful hues perfectly suited for a family. Buy it here!

Delsey Luggage Helium Aero Blue 29″ Trolley

Best Luggage Brand for the Price: Delsey

We’re particularly fond of their hardside suitcases such as the Helium Aero shown above. It comes in different sizes and also has a convenient expandable feature, making it one of our best suitcase recommendations. Buy it here!

Along with the Chatelet and Helium Aero, the Cruise Lite is a popular Delsey softside luggage option. This luggage is great for the organized techie. This brand is amazing and our readers agree!

Delsey Luggage Chatelet Hard 24″

One company that wasn’t previously on our list of the top luggage brands was Delsey. However, with low price points and stylish suitcases, they’ve become one of our readers’ favorites as they offer a balance of style and value for money!

For a carry-on, we like the Chatelet 21″ carry-on size.

If you want a luxe look without a high price tag, the Chatelet is gorgeous yet well-priced in comparison to similar styles on the market. Our favorite is the one with the ivory cream exterior lined with a lovely red interior. They now also have a softside version, too! Buy it here!

Travelpro Maxlite 5 21″ Expandable Suitcase

Best Luggage Brand According to Our Readers: Travelpro

The founders of Travelpro actually invented the wheeled suitcase so there’s no question about this brand’s reputation. The Maxlite is one of their best selling styles. The Maxlite 5, shown above, is a softside suitcase with a roomy interior featuring both top and side handles for ease of use.

It has plenty of space and is great if you’re looking for a suitcase that fits in the overhead bin on most planes. A couple of our readers have even used this bag to travel carry-on only for two weeks in Europe and another reader took it traveling for three months in Southeast Asia.

Cherene Saradar from the Wandering Redhead says, “My Travelpro Maxlite international-sized carry-on suitcase is currently my go-to bag for most types of travel. I use it for both long and short-term travel. It is stylish and versatile and meets the standards for carry-on sizes for most airlines.” Buy it here!

Briggs & Riley Baseline Expandable 22″ Carry-on

Best Luggage Brand for Air Travel: Briggs and Riley

Lindsay Taub, of Voyage Vixens, spent years in search of the perfect bag. Well, she found it and is sharing her suitcase recommendation:

“The Briggs & Riley Exchange Duffle weighs only a few pounds and easily converts from a shoulder bag to a backpack. It also passes for carry-on size, so there’s no need to check a bag.

For me, this is absolutely key because it gives you flexibility while traveling and there’s no chance of your luggage getting lost when you travel carry on.”

Briggs and Riley is one of the top suitcase brands loved by many jetsetters who travel for both leisure and business. Nancy D. Brown says, “I’m a Briggs and Riley carry-on girl unless I’m traveling longer than two weeks”.

The Briggs & Riley Baseline suitcase shown above is one of their best selling carry-on styles and we think it looks amazing! It’s a sophisticated bag that features the brand’s CX™ expansion-compression system that increases packing capacity, and then compresses down to keep contents secure. It also has a built-in-tri-fold garment folder with foam roll bar for those delicate items you don’t want wrinkled. Buy it here!

Denise Brosseau of Thought Leadership Lab confidently states that she’s a loyal Victorinox Werks Traveler owner, and ranks it as one of the top luggage brands.

“I have two sizes, depending on if I am traveling for three days or a week or more. These suitcases are very sturdy and stay looking nice over many miles.

Different pieces of their luggage easily hook together or can be attached to luggage from another set. The handle turns to make it comfortable to hold as you run through the airport, and it has sufficient pockets to make it easy to sort and find the items you’re looking for.

At nearly $500, the Spectra 2.0 shown above isn’t the most budget-friendly suitcase, but it’s a great investment piece for the frequent traveler. This suitcase will last you forever thanks to the break-resistant 100% pure Bayer polycarbonate. While compact, it expands an additional 4.3”, offering 45% more capacity – perfect for when you load up on souvenirs or gifts! Buy it here!

Eagle Creek Tarmac AWD 26″ Luggage

Best Luggage Brands for Frequent Travelers: Eagle Creek

When you embark on a long-term trip, you need a bag that’s built to last. Larissa Milne, of Changes in Longitude, recommends Eagle Creek as one of the top luggage brands for long-term travel.

Larissa says, “For my year-long RTW trip, I packed a wheeled Eagle Creek Hovercraft Upright 22” (no longer available) and still managed to fit in five pairs of shoes.

I also used a Baggalini Town Tote computer bag with a sleeve for sliding over the Hovercraft handle. The Baggalini is very light and multifunctional to use as a beach bag, too. For a purse, I used a small Pacsafe Slingsafe.”

The Eagle Creek Tarmac Awd suitcase is perfect for this type of travel. It’s constructed with durable and heavy-duty fabric that protects against friction and weather. The shell is a lightweight polycarbonate, so your luggage is safe without adding weight. American Tourister Moonlight 21″ Hardside Spinner

Best Luggage Brands for a hardside: American Tourister

Vienne Cheung, of VienneMilano, loves American Tourister and so do our readers.

She says, “after much searching, I found a small, 20” suitcase similar to the Llite Max Softside Spinner. It was big enough to carry all of my products for my traveling pop-up events and spacious enough to fit a week of wardrobe for New York fashion week. Since I pretty much live in my suitcase, I am super happy!”

American Tourister offers a balance between quality and price. If you only travel occasionally and want a low cost option, the Moonlight Spinner is a good choice on our list of suitcase recommendations. We love the book opening case with its mesh divider panel that features additional packing compartments. The side-mounted TSA locks can deter theft, too. Buy it here!

Osprey Ozone 21.5″ Wheeled Luggage

Best Luggage Brands for Durability: Osprey

Osprey is one of our all-time favorite travel brands and we’ve written many articles about this brand, which you can read about here.

If you’re planning to travel extensively, go on a round-the-world backpacking trip, or jetset full-time, this is the absolute top luggage brand to securely house your belongings. Other travelers agree:

Jacquie Whitt, the co-founder of Adios Adventure, has been using the Osprey Sojourn bag for the past five or six years, and it tops her list of suitcase recommendations. “It features wheels as well as hidden shoulder straps, should I be in a place without roads. One of the reasons I like Osprey is their guarantee. My first bag wore out after four years of traveling around South America and when I took it in for repair, they replaced it with a new bag.”

Vanessa of Turnipseed Travel says, “I’m currently trying out the Osprey Porter 46, a soft-sided travel bag with backpack straps that weighs just over two pounds. Everyone focuses on the size of their bag, but the weight is just as important.”

Inma Gregorio, of A World to Travel, uses and recommends the Meridian, a wheeled, convertible 45L backpack with a 15L daypack attached.

As a long-term traveler, I couldn’t imagine traveling with any other brand. I’ve owned the Farpoint Backpack, Meridian Convertible and most recently the Osprey Ozone (shown above).

The Ozone is perfect for organizing your essentials. The easy access zippered top liquids pocket allows quick access to your toiletry kit while hidden zippered sections store travel documents, a wallet or a passport, and the large mesh pockets are perfect to hold snacks, headphones, or other small items. Buy it here!

it luggage 22″ Lightweight Expandable Carry-on

Best Luggage Brands for the Weight: IT Luggage

If you’ve traveled to Europe you’ve probably seen IT everywhere and could’ve easily guessed they’re one of the top luggage brands there. Mary Chong, of Calculated Traveler, swears by ultra-lightweight IT luggage and so do many European vacation-goers.

“I use the 4-wheeler carry-on by IT Luggage Brands, which weighs 1.84 kg/4.07 lbs. I LOVE IT. I go carry-on only and sneak more on the plane by using a backpack as my laptop bag/purse.”

IT is one of our top suitcase recommendations because it is extremely practical in design maximizing every square inch of space while having minimalist details lowering the weight of the overall bag.

As a major plus, IT luggage is also incredibly affordable, making it one of the best luggage brands for cheap suitcases. Buy it here!

Best Luggage Brands for the Money: Ricardo Beverly Hills

Olivia Hulett, of Ricardo Beverly Hills, offers her tips on how to choose a suitcase.

“If you are checking luggage, pick a large, durable, lightweight 4-wheeled case that has a lot of interior organization features including zippered pockets, shoe pouches, and tie-down straps.

If you are carrying on your luggage, pick a lightweight suitcase with two wheels and plenty of exterior pockets.

Since the wheels on two-wheeled cases are usually inline, the bodies of two-wheeled carry-on cases tend to be about 20% larger than those on four-wheeled carry-ons, and more packing capacity is always a good thing.

Store your boarding pass and other important travel documents in the exterior pockets of your carry-on so you can easily access them as you go through check-in and security.”

Packing light can be incredibly challenging but Ricardo Beverly Hills makes it a little bit easier with a variety of designs like the Mar Vista expandable carry-on shown above. The four dual wheels spin quietly and responsively in any direction while the reinforced carry handles are padded for extra comfort. The upright case expands with the pull of a zipper so you can increase your packing capacity. With a 10-year limited warranty, you can count on this luggage lasting through years of travel. Buy it here!

Tumi Alpha 3 Expandable Carry-On

Best Luggage Brands for Frequent Flyers: Tumi

Jill Jacinto, Managing Editor at WORKS, recommends Tumi as one of the top luggage brands for frequent flyers.

“If you are frequently traveling for work, I’d recommend getting a Tumi carry-on piece like the Alpha 3 Continental. Tumi bags are pricey, but they can withstand wear and tear from constant travel.”

Elegant and spacious, the Alpha 3 is truly made for frequent flyers as it includes a convenient compartment to hang your clothes making unpacking and repacking a breeze!

Tumi has great travel protection and a warranty. They’ll replace your wheels within a year and they offer a complimentary two-year warranty for all other wear and tear issues.

Jill also recommends sticking to a subdued neutral color if you’re traveling for work. Choose black, especially since you will mainly only travel carry-on. Buy it here!

Looking for luggage can seem daunting when you see how many brands are competing for your attention. Some are household brand names, and others you may be hearing about for the first time. Either way, we went through extensive research to determine the top ten best luggage brands. Below you’ll find the 11 best luggage brands for travelers of all budgets for this year:

Best Luggage Brands Top 11 Guide

1. Samsonite

Founded: 1910
Headquarters: Luxembourg City, Luxembourg (Originally Denver, CO)
Carry-on price range: $80-$500

Is Samsonite the best luggage brand? The short answer: Yes. Samsonite comes as the most highly-rated luggage brand when considering an average budget, which is why we consider it to be the best luggage brand for most people. This brand has a vast catalogue of luggage that includes luggage sets and carry-ons with hard and soft cases, bags with wheels or over-the-shoulder straps and almost any other bag category imaginable. We’ve gone ahead and written about Samsonite luggage reviews for all the top luggage types.

Although Amazon customer reviews prove that Samsonite has a lot to offer the luggage shopper, Samsonite can be beat if you are looking for the best quality and are willing to spend more money. However, if you ask someone with limited knowledge about luggage to name a brand, he or she will almost always come up with Samsonite first. This is a testament to the brand’s longevity and reputation of continuing to put out exceptional products for the price.

Our Favorite Samsonite Suitcase:

Cosmolite – Samsonite is the luggage brand with the widest range of products for a wide range of budgets. Samsonite offers luggage for as little as $80 as well as more high-end suitcases to compete with Tumi, mainly the Cosmolite. The Cosmolite is offered in the 3 standard sizes: small (20″), medium (25″), and large (28″). What stands out with the cosmolite is the same reason why we love it so much, because it is insanely light-weight! The Cosmolite just feels different than the typical Samsonite bag because of the high-end quality of the hard case. The carry on only weighs 4.5 lbs, so if you have the money – we’re certain you’ll love the Cosmolite as much as we do.

If cost truly is not an issue, our hands-down favorite luggage brand is Tumi. Tumi suitcases are a step above Samsonite when it comes to overall quality, but also price – which may put them out of reach for the average luggage shopper. Tumi manufactures a wide range of suitcases and bags, giving them quite the catalog. Shoppers with a larger budget will really like what they get from Tumi. All in all, Samsonite and Tumi really are the best luggage brands.

2. Tumi

Founded: 1975
Headquarters: South Plainfield, NJ
Carry on price range: $500-$2,100 (yes, really.)

‘Tumi or not Tumi?, that is the question!’ Is Tumi the best luxury luggage brand? We absolutely think so! And so do thousands of owners who write reviews all over the Internet. Tumi owners are extremely brand loyal and we typically find Tumi owners who are going on 20+ years of being a loyal Tumi customer. Tumi is widely considered to be a luxury luggage brand, which is why it’s listed on our top luxury luggage brands article. Depending where you live, there are Tumi stores in some moderate to high-end shopping areas and malls, which is great if you want to go and see the lineup in person.

Yes, Tumi is quite expensive compared to the other brands listed on this page, however, you can expect a longer life from Tumi over other brands. Tumi owners time and time again rave about how long their bags last, sometimes through generations! Tumi suitcases typically start at around $500 and can go all the way up to $1,000 just for one suitcase. This may seem expensive at first, but if you are a frequent traveler, you know that luggage durability is important. A $100 suitcase may experience some wear and tear much faster than a high-end Tumi bag. In 20 years, you may have bought several bags, when you could have just bought a Tumi bag once that would last you the entire 20 years. You’ll note that the Tumi HQ is located in New Jersey; however, their luggage is actually manufactured outside of the US in various factory locations. This can also be said for the rest of the brands on our list. It’s tough to find an entire luggage line that is actually made in the U.S. We consider Tumi to be one of the best luggage brands if you have the money to spend.

Our Favorite Tumi Suitcase:

Tegra-lite – Tumi is our favorite luggage brand, and the Tegra-lite is our favorite model. The Tegra line has that quintessential Tumi look and helps make Tumi one of the most recognizable luggage brands because of the elegant styling and features. The Tegra line has the carbon fiber look and feel that we love, and each year the suitcase seems to be offered in different color options to help keep the look fresh. Aside from looking amazing, the Tegra is famous for being one of the most lightweight luggage offered by Tumi, if not the lightest. Add in the fact that there is a built-in TSA luggage lock and Tumi Tracer location service and you’ve got yourself one of the best suitcases available today.

UPDATE: Tumi has officially been acquired by rival Samsonite to the tune of 1.8 billion dollars, which was officially announced August 1, 2016. This will most likely not mean much to the consumer. Samsonite knows that Tumi is a great brand on its own, and Samsonite will not try to step in and ruin that. In fact, Tumi sales are forecasted to double by end of next year. Samsonite may be on the hunt to acquire even more luggage brands, so stay tuned to see how it all unfolds.

3. Briggs & Riley

Founded: 1993
Headquarters: Hauppauge, NY
Carry on price range: $300-$700

Briggs & Riley stands out from the other luggage brands because of their lifetime repair guarantee on all their bags! This lifetime repair guarantee covers the life of a bag for all functional aspects, and many customers think that spending more for these high-quality bags is worth that peace of mind. The guarantee aligns with the company philosophy that customers are family, and to look out for one another and have integrity.

Briggs & Riley listens to their customers, retail partners, and repair experts to engineer their products for the real-world. The brand has pieces and lines that focus on different traveling needs ranging from bags with innovative technology to modern smart backpacks. This brand is great for frequent flyers who don’t have time to deal with luggage issues and malfunctions.

Our Favorite Briggs & Riley Suitcase:

Torq – This was a tough one, because Briggs & Riley offers a lot of amazing, luxury luggage. We believe the best hard-sided Briggs & Riley bag is the Torq, and the best soft-sided suitcase they offer is the Baseline. Having said that, go with the style that you prefer, but we will give the slight edge to the Torq suitcase. We’ve heard that not everyone is a fan of the looks of the Torq, as it looks a little boxy and rugged, but we think it looks great. The hard shell is extremely durable, and if you go with one of the bright colors, you’ll never have a hard time seeing your bag come down the luggage carousel.

Many owners have said that this will be the last piece of luggage they will buy and would buy again if asked. This brand comes highly recommended based on excellent quality, design, and volume capacity, and its interior features allow you to securely manage all your items. Definitely check out the Baseline luggage line that they offer if you want a soft-side, and the Torq if you’re looking for a hard-sided carry-on.

4. Travelpro

Founded: 1987
Headquarters: Paris, France
Carry on price range: $70-$340

This brand made history by revolutionizing modern-day travel. The inventor of the Original Rollaboard, Robert Plath, was a pilot who placed two wheels and a handle on a suitcase. He started Travelpro International, and the brand has been a leader in the travel industry.

Travelpro has received many accolades over the past twenty years. 2014 marked the second year in a row that the brand was voted World’s Best Luggage by Premier Traveler Magazine. The brand claims to be used by more than 500,000 flight crews and frequent travelers worldwide, more than all other brands combined.

Our Favorite Travelpro Suitcase:

Maxlite – If you want something traditional and affordable, go with the famously well-reviewed Maxlite line offered by Travelpro. Maxlite is the signature line of the Travelpro brand and finds itself being updated and refreshed every so often. Currently the Maxlite series is in its 4th iteration and has never been better. The Maxlite series is a bit unique in that it is offered in both wheel types: spinner and inline. Not many suitcases are offered in inline since most people think that they prefer the 4 spinner wheel setup, however anyone who has ever experienced a broken spinner wheel would be happy to learn that inline wheels are much more durable. Go with the style you prefer and you won’t be disappointed.

Look to this brand if you are looking for garment bags, suitcases, computer bags, totes, backpacks, and rolling duffel bags that are durable, functional, and lightweight. These bags undergo rigorous testing protocols that replicate real-world conditions to ensure they meet quality standards for zippers, fabric, extension handles, wheels, temperature, and water repellency.

5. Delsey

Founded: 1946 (began luggage production in 1970)
Headquarters: Paris, France
Carry on price range: $75-$400

Delsey was founded over 70 years in Paris, and its history tells of the brand’s ability to adapt to the changing world. With over 50 awards and patents, Delsey should not be overlooked. We have found Delsey to be extremely reliable, resilient, and functional while also being very high-quality as well. Delsey luggage designs feature clean lines, vintage selections, and urban inspirations.

Before selling great luggage, Delsey was a manufacturer of small cameras and typewriter cases in Paris in 1946. In a famously successful business pivot, they were able to adapt to the changing world to make travelling cases and suitcases. The name Delsey was created thanks to the merging of the Delhaye company and Seynhaeve brothers to manufacture luggage after seeing an increase in people travelling.

You may be surprised to hear that Delsey is the second largest luggage company in the world with its distribution network covering over 110 countries. When we think of Delsey, the words that the brand exudes are hope, optimism, craftsmanship, and expertise.
So again, we ask… Why Delsey? Because they have amassed over 50 awards and patents, in addition to many innovations including the world’s first “Trolley System”, “Zip Securi-tech” Over weight indicator” “Brake system”, Shell in Technical Lin, “Front pocket on hardside” and more.

Our Favorite Delsey Suitcase:

Helium Aero – After amassing more than 475+ reviews and counting, the Helium Aero luggage line by Delsey is easily their most well liked suitcase and also our favorite of any that they offer. Desley is a great luggage brand and our favorite piece of luggage they offer is the Helium Aero for many reasons. Helium Aero suitcases come in fun and unique colors to match your personal style. The hardsided material is quite light and the spinner wheels are some of the smoothest we’ve ever seen, making it a breeze to roll around the airport. The price is also quite fair as well, you can usually find a Helium Aero carry on very close to the $100 price point that a lot of people prefer to stick to.

Features of some Delsey suitcases include surface treatment “Easy-Wash”, updated looks, handmade bags, and soft-touch finishing. Form meets function meets flair is the best way to describe it all together.

6. Victorinox

Founded: 1884 (began luggage production in 1999)
Headquarters: New York City, NY
Carry on price range: $220-$860

You may have seen Victorinox’s logo before, but not on a suitcase. Rather, you may have seen it on a pocketknife. Victorinox is the parent company of the manufacturers of the famous Swiss Army Knife. There’s a lot of confusion around Victorinox because people see the same logo being used for Swiss Gear and also Wenger. The short answer is that Victorinox is the overall, parent company. Victorinox owns Wenger, and Wenger manufacturers Swiss Gear. All three of those companies technically manufacture luggage under their respective names. Wenger and Swiss Gear are good brands if you have a moderate budget. However, if you’re looking for the best luggage brand of the three, we suggest going with Victorinox.

Victorinox is not cheap, as a typical bag will run you around $300 or more. What you are paying for is the meticulous quality and durability that is synonymous with the Victorinox name. Victorinox offers a healthy mix of hard-sided and soft-sided luggage as well as offering duffels, backpacks, and various totes.

Our Favorite Victorinox Suitcase:

Werks Traveler – The Werks has not been around as long as a lot of our top picks from other brands, but you will fall in love with their new premier Werks line. Like most Victorinox luggage, the Werks Traveler does not come cheap, however it will last you a long time. “Packs more, Weighs less” is the official motto of the Werks line, according to Victorinox. The Werks line hearkens back to the original Swiss Army Knife and all it’s unique capabilities. Victorinox Werks Traveler suitcases come with a removable suit carrier as well as a divider to help your organize your clothes better. Victorinox is a brand that we’ve trusted for a long time, and we’re so happy that they make great luggage like the Werks.

You could probably guess that Victorinox has a long and storied history, and you’d be right. Although they only started making luggage in 1999, they have quickly caught up to some of the giants in the luggage industry.

7. Kenneth Cole

Founded: 1982 (began luggage production in 1996)
Headquarters: New York City, NY
Carry on price range: $50-$120

On the surface, Kenneth Cole may seem like one of those brands that sells way too many different types of products to actually make any of them well. You’ll be pleased to know that that is not the case with their affordable luggage line.

Kenneth Cole is an American designer based out of New York who originally made and sold shoes. Through the years, he added more products to the line, including the “Reaction” line of luggage and other accessories. Kenneth Cole may sound like the name of some fancy and expensive designer’s items; however, the Kenneth Cole Reaction luggage line might be the most affordable luggage on our entire list. We’ve written a great post covering several different Kenneth Cole luggage reviews Just about every KC suitcase can be purchased for less than $100, some even around the $50 price point!

Our Favorite Kenneth Cole Suitcase:

Reaction – The Kenneth Cole Reaction is one of our favorite suitcases of all time for many reasons. For one, the price point is virtually impossible to beat for the quality that you are getting. A Reaction carry on will never run you more than $100, yet so many reviewers all over the Internet are infatuated with this little suitcase.

There aren’t any crazy features that will blow your mind, simply put this is a bargain pick that offers you the quality of a more expensive suitcase. Buying a Reaction might be your best sub-$100 carry on purchase. Also, don’t worry, the Reaction comes in many colors other than pink : )

The majority of Kenneth Cole luggage is hard-sided, which is great for a less-expensive suitcase because it ensures that you’ll still get the benefits of added durability. If you have a small budget, Kenneth Cole is a high-quality brand to look into.

8. American Tourister

Founded: 1995
Headquarters: Commerce, CA
Carry on price range: $70-$180

Aside from Samsonite, American Tourister might be the most popular luggage brand you’ll find looking around at an airport. Much like Samsonite, American Tourister is an excellent brand for a moderate budget, and can be purchased in most department stores or online. What you may not know though is that American Tourister is owned by Samsonite.

Our Favorite American Tourister Suitcase:

ILite Xtreme – There really isn’t anything “Xtreme” about this particular suitcase but we love it anyway. Much like the Reaction above, don’t be scared away by the bold teal color, the ILite Xtreme is available in many bold colors as well as traditional, even some patterns from time to time depending on inventory! Any time you can get a great spinner suitcase for under $100 we are curious. There are a lot of defective wheels on cheap spinner suitcases but those found on the ILite Xtreme are some of the strongest we’ve seen and other reviewers seem to agree with us. The built-in fabric handle on the top AND the side accompany the telescoping handle making it a breeze to carry any which way you prefer. American Tourister is one of those flagship brands that you see all over the airport, and the ILite Xtreme is the best of the lot for your money.

American Tourister is not the same quality as Samsonite, but you will find it to be slightly cheaper in price than Samsonite. Another advantage to the American Tourister selection is all the great luggage for kids. The key is that they have licensing rights to print Disney designs. You’ll find a lot of the classic Disney characters and movies as well as Star Wars and Marvel designs for kids. American Tourister is a luggage brand that has great suitcases for the entire family.

9. Rockland

Founded: 1995
Headquarters: Commerce, CA
Carry on price range: $35-$120

Our favorite “cheap” luggage brand is Rockland. We understand that not everybody wants to spend over $100 on a suitcase. Some travelers want to spend as little as possible, and don’t really care about what the suitcase looks like as long as it doesn’t fall apart. For the folks out there who just want something cheap and reliable, check out Rockland. Rockalnd is one of the few luggage brands out there that offer luggage sets around $100, that still maintain an average of 4 out of 5-star user-rating.

Our Favorite Rockland Suitcase(s):

Melbourne Set – OK, so we may be cheating a little here by selecting 2 suitcases instead of the 1 best. That’s fine though because with the Melbourne set, you can get both the small carry on 20″ suitcase and the large 28″ suitcase both combining for a price tag of under $100. There are suitcases on this list for over $500, so the fact that you can get two for $400 cheaper is quite a steal. The Rockland Melbourne set is offered in more color options than we’ve seen before with luggage, so you’re sure to find a color you like. For most travelers, all that is needed is a 2 piece set like this. You’ll get your small carry on as well as your large checked suitcase. The quality is great on both of these suitcases and are a steal for the price, which is what makes the Melbourne set the best of the Rockland brand offering.

Rockland luggage is manufactured by “Fox Luggage” and began mass production around 1995 in Commerce, CA, which is near Los Angeles. Rockland is distributed on a number of places online as well as in stores. They are typically known for being an excellent budget brand that also offers a wide variety of unique colors and patterns.

10. Traveler’s Choice

Founded: 1984
Headquarters: Pomona, CA
Carry on price range: $40-$160

Another great choice is Traveler’s Choice, which is one of the best all-around brands we’ve come across. They are one of the best brands because they offer such a wide range of luggage that will appeal to any traveler with any budget. Their luggage is offered in single pieces, but also in sets of 2, 3, 4, and even more than that. Offering a healthy mix of hard-sided and soft-sided luggage options, Traveler’s Choice comes well-reviewed by owners all over the Internet.

Traveler’s Choice offers one of the most unique things we’ve seen in the luggage industry: . With this option, you are able to upload any custom image that you own the rights to, and it will be printed on a 22” carry on suitcase. Make sure you have a high-resolution version of the image that you fully own the rights to. While some people think that buying a bright color suitcase will help them identify their bag at the airport carousel, the best way to be unique is to put your own custom photo on your suitcase to really make it your own. We are huge fans of luggage innovation, which is why we love Traveler’s Choice.

Our Favorite Traveler’s Choice Suitcase:

Tasmania – Maybe we’re partial to luggage named after places in and around Australia, but like the Melbourne, the Tasmania is an excellent option if you’re looking for reasonably priced hard-sided luggage. Many of Traveler’s Choice luggage is offered in sets, including the Tasmania suitcase. The poly-carbonate shell allows for “flexing” which helps the suitcase not to crack under extreme wear and tear or extreme climate conditions. The shell is also diamond cut and abrasion resisting, making it an awesome pick if your top priority is durability. One of our favorite features is when a luggage brand offers a suitcase offers an expandable hard-sided suitcase at a reasonable price. Traveler’s Choice is one of the best luggage brands for that reason among so many others. If you’re looking for a new brand to try out, and have durability as a priority, take a peek at the Tasmania offered by Traveler’s Choice.

11. AmazonBasics

Founded: 2009
Headquarters: Seattle, WA
Carry on price range: $40-$70

You may have seen the AmazonBasics brand before in a different iteration. AmazonBasics was created by Amazon when they saw opportunities in certain categories being sold on their website. They began selling electronic accessories like cords and chargers in 2009, and have since branched out to hundreds of different categories. They made our list because they have decided to enter the luggage market, and make a very affordable suitcase. Because they can control the supply chain, they are able to offer decent luggage at very affordable prices. They don’t have the same vast offering as Samsonite, but with the models they do sell, you can’t really go wrong for the price.

AmazonBasics offers luggage options such as hard or soft shell, single or sets, as well as various sizes from carry on to over-sized. We’re guessing that Amazon will keep expanding their luggage line, but for now we’ve got them sneaking it at #11. We hope to see more from them in the future as well as a little more improvement in the current line. However if you only have around $50 to spend on a suitcase, AmazonBasics is a great budget-friendly choice.

What’s in a luggage brand name?

Buying luggage is like buying anything else; you can easily get lost in a sea of brand names, not knowing if there is truly any correlation between the price and the quality. There are certain brands that we personally feel are overrated and overpriced for the quality. Those brands were not include them on our list and will not mention them here. Each of the 10 best luggage brands on our list above will not disappoint you, and you can count on that.

When you’re faced with a luggage selection as wide as Best Buy’s, it can be tough to figure out which brand to go with. So today, I’ll be doing a luggage comparison for three of Best Buy’s most popular brands: Samsonite, Swiss Gear, and Kenneth Cole.

What’s guaranteed

First, let’s talk about what’s the same in all three. They’re all high-quality luggage brands that hold up over time, and the sets that I chose to compare are all pretty similar. Each set features all hard side luggage pieces, which are great for protecting your belongings from being crushed by other pieces of luggage and careless TSA officials.

They also all feature 360˚ wheels, which (as dedicated readers of the Best Buy Plug-in Blog will already know) I absolutely LOVE. Unidirectional wheels were one of my biggest pet peeves growing up, and I was thrilled when 360˚ wheels became a thing.

They’re so prevalent nowadays that you’re almost guaranteed to find them in any piece of mid-range to high-end luggage, but only almost. One of my family members had to return a luggage set that they bought online just last month because it didn’t have 360˚ wheels, so the fact that Kenneth Cole, Samsonite, and Swiss Gear all have them is still a big plus!

Kenneth Cole Reaction

The Kenneth Cole Reaction Departure Point Luggage Set includes:

I found an unexpected love for the Kenneth Cole Reaction line. The set that I was able to review for this luggage comparison was their Kenneth Cole Reaction Departure Point 3-Piece Hard Side 8-Wheeled Luggage Set, and I immediately liked the straight Departure Point lines. Made from impact-resistant ABS plastic, the Kenneth Cole Reaction Departure Point set includes a 20-inch carry-on, a weeklong 24-inch (which you could totally fit a whole month into), and a 28-inch.

Each piece has a fully lined interior with a zippered lid and a main compartment with garment restraints. Additionally, they rest on eight 360-degree spinner wheels–each corner has a duo-wheel setup for added stability. The Departure Point set comes with top and bottom grab handles for easier lifting, and as a 5’2″ woman who had to lift each of these sets into their vertical boxes, I can confirm that the handles really do help a lot.

In terms of technologies, the Kenneth Cole line was the most basic of all three. The Departure Point range is not RFID protected or TSA lock-friendly, and none of the pieces were water resistant or expandable.

While 3 pice sets of any brand will be comparable in size, a 20″ piece of luggage from one brand isn’t always the same size as a 20″ from another brand. On the whole, the Kenneth Cole Reaction line runs true to size, but each piece sits a little high due to the large wheels that they use. It was the lightest and tallest set across the board, with the most space in its carry on.

A taller profile means that these pieces will be slightly harder to fit into an overhead luggage compartment, but the trade-off may be worth it: if you’re headed somewhere with snowy or rugged sidewalks, having that extra inch and a quarter of clearance could be useful.

The Samsonite Pinsky Expandable Luggage Set includes:

Canadian-born Samsonite celebrated their 60th last year (in 2016), so you know that it’s a line with long-term durability and reliability. But despite this legacy, the one thing that hit me immediately about the Samsonite Pinsky 3-Piece Hard Side Expandable Spinner Luggage Set was the fact that it looks dated.

If you love teal or turquoise, then this set could be what you’ve waited you entire life to find. But for me? I keep thinking about the set of luggage under my grandmother’s bed, which is basically the soft-side version of this exact Samsonite set. It’s the same right down to the colour, and she’s had it for a good twenty years.

In terms of functionality, Samsonite has lost a few inches all around in order to fit in that terraced design. Across the board, this luggage set is heavier than comparable sizes of Swiss Gear or Kenneth Cole Reaction (by up to half a kilo per piece), and yet volumetrically, it has the smallest amount of storage space.

The wheels on the Pinsky are very generous, which makes this set very stable but a little harder to move than the Swiss Gear or Kenneth Cole Reaction sets. In terms of technologies, this set doens’t have RFID-blocking linings or TSA-approved locks, but it is expandable.

Swiss Gear

The Swiss Gear Extravagance II Expandable Luggage Set includes:

Finally, this luggage comparison covers my favourite luggage set so far: the Swiss Gear Extravagance II 3-Piece Hard Side 4-Wheeled Expandable Luggage Set. I LOVE this luggage set–it’s so easy to use and lift, and the lacquered finish is just gorgeous.

The Swiss Gear Extravagance set is noticeably trendier than the other offerings mentioned in this luggage comparison, with nice, sleek edges. I especially appreciated the attention to detail in the design of Swiss Gear’s hard shell exteriors; this set features elongating ridging and a particularly lovely logo embossed on the backs of the pieces, while other sets like the brand’s EVO II range offer a subtle swirl detail and visual grain.

Size-wise, there is more space in the Swiss Gear Extravagance II set than in either the Kenneth Cole Reaction or Samsonite lines, despite the fact that each piece is shorter than the comparable sizes in other ranges. (I find that a shorter profile makes luggage easier to fit into an overhead bin, so it’s something I always check!)

I find that Swiss Gear luggage has smaller than average wheels, which is one of the reasons why it’s shorter than most. A lower clearance isn’t ideal for snowy terrain, but it’s excellent in an airport or bus terminal–these glide along the floor like figure skaters.

Overall, Swiss Gear’s technologies are also pretty basic, with no RFID shielding or TSA-approved locks. However, this set is expandable, and each piece is handily listed as water-resistant. (Not waterproof, but water resistant items typically fare better in environments where they may be splashed.)

A quick luggage comparison by brand

In the broad view, I really loved using Swiss Gear’s Extravagance II Luggage Set. However, it’s on the pricier end of things, and each brand has its strengths.

Swiss Gear gives you better ease of use and more packing space, while Samsonite gives you stability in the wheels. Kenneth Cole Reaction is a mix of the two, with a bulkier profile, but also a lower price point.

What kind of luggage will you need on your next vacation? Leave your answers in the comments, or connect with me on Twitter at @thenotice!

Carry-on luggage is all well and good if you’re only going on a short trip, but if you are planning on staying away longer, you’ll need a substantial suitcase that can be checked into the cargo hold.

Whether you choose to check an uber-modern hard shell spinner case, a traditional fabric case, or a big ol’ backpack — you should do your research to find the size, shape, and style of luggage that works best for your next adventure.

Things to Consider With Checked Luggage

Checked luggage is bigger, bulkier and usually more cumbersome than cabin cases. How you transport it to and from the airport, as well as the psychical weight and size restrictions on the aircraft itself, will affect the type of checked luggage you can use on an aircraft.

Carry-on luggage is easy to handle, but it can lack the space your need for bigger adventures. If you’re planning to check your luggage this time, treat yourself to one of those bigger suitcases you’ve had your eyes on.

Most manufacturers make cases, backpacks, and even bags in a variety of sizes, so you could even drop a few dollars on a matching set. Remember that medium cases are easier to transport than super-sized ones (and lighter too).

Great big cases are hard work to roll around the airport, and every carrier has restrictions on the size and weight they’ll accept — so check with the airline before you fly.

Hot Tip: As a general rule, 62 inches linear is usually the maximum allowed bag size for most domestic and international carriers.

Don’t be that person at check-in unpacking their overstuffed suitcase to make it weigh less. Check with your airline before you fly to find out their weight limit guidelines for checked luggage. Most airlines will charge extra for bags that weigh over 50lbs (or may even refuse them at check-in).

You may be able to escape the weight restrictions by checking more than 1 suitcase at a time, but you will usually be charged extra for this privilege (and not every airline on every route will offer this service).

Backpack vs. Suitcase

When it comes to checked luggage, this is really down to what suits you best and how you intend to carry your belongings when you reach your destination.

If you are backpacking around the globe, you should probably invest in a pack of some kind with lots of bells and whistles. But if you’re planning a vacation in a fancy resort, a suitcase will be just fine.

Bottom Line: The best type of luggage is the one that matches your needs both when you fly and when you get there, so don’t lust over something unsuitable — buy to suit your needs instead.

Suitcases with 2 wheels are easy to pull behind you and will be better equipped to move over rougher terrain, while the 4-wheeled versions can glide along next to you and are much easier to manage in tight spaces such as airplane aisles.

Cost, practicality, and personal preference are all major factors in choosing a 2- or 4-wheeled option. You can glide a 4-wheel spinner case with ease in the airport, but it could easily get stuck on bumpy sidewalks or uneven pathways.

A 2-wheeled version can be hauled over anything, but they can also be unsteady and cumbersome. Test “drive” a few suitcases before you buy!

A sturdy handle is an absolute must on a medium or larger suitcase. No one wants to end up having to carry their case around the airport — those wheels are there to be used!

Telescopic handles that fit neatly inside the frame of the case when not in use are a common feature of full-size suitcases. If you are buying a premium brand, they should also come with ergonomic handles to prevent your hands from becoming raw when pulling that case from one country to another.

Hot Tip: Look for a suitcase handle that has a selection of stop heights. That way, even the tallest and smallest members of your family can pull it with ease.

Zips & Locks (TSA)

The TSA requires that every passenger traveling to or from the United States use a TSA-approved lock or zipper to secure their luggage.

TSA screens every passenger’s baggage before it’s placed on the plane, and they can choose to open a passenger’s luggage for closer inspection at their discretion.

When this occurs, if the luggage has any lock other than those approved by the TSA, they will destroy it to gain access. So invest in a TSA-approved lock or bag with a zipper to ensure your bag doesn’t arrive half open and wrapped in notorious TSA tape.

Hard or Soft Luggage

Choosing whether to get a shiny new hardshell case or a sporty-looking softshell is another tough call you’ll have to make.

Hard cases can be incredibly durable with sleek curves and colorful exteriors, but they offer less flexibility in terms of interior space (and are more prone to wonky wheels and failing handles).

Soft cases are sometimes less to look at, and they don’t offer quite the same level of reinforced protection. However, they often have more usable internal space, useful external pockets, and are far lighter to carry and easier to maneuver.

Quality and the durability of any case will depend on the make and model, so remember the old adage “buy cheap, buy twice” before you commit.

Material & Durability

Hardshell suitcases are made from durable materials that will take the common knocks and bangs associated with air travel in stride. The most popular hard materials are polycarbonate, aluminum, ABS, and polypropylene.

When it comes to softshell cases, don’t let the fabric put you off. They’re not made from fine silk and won’t fall to pieces at the first touch! Usually, these are manufactured using super-strong synthetic materials such as ballistic and Cordura nylon, or polyester if you opt for a lower-cost option.

The Best Hardshell Checked Luggage Cases

For the Fashion Conscious Traveler

Delsey Luggage Helium Aero 25 Inch Expandable Spinner (We travel with this one!)

This suitcase looks really nice! It also wheels well and has plenty of space for lots of belongings. Unlike some of the other hardshell cases on the market, the Aero from Delsey also has the capacity to expand a little bit, so you can drop in some souvenirs during your return journey.

Made from 100% polycarbonate, the case itself should remain durable throughout its lifetime.

Available in a selection of colors, the shiny, molded case is an absolute stunner.

Internally, it is also impressive, with 2 full packing compartments, a separate lined divider, tie-down straps, and a zippered pocket for small accessories. These are allegedly there to minimize the shifting of contents during transit, though for most of us they just secure the extra items we throw-in at the last minute.

The double spinner wheels are small, yet somehow really smooth and effective, while the handle feels sturdy enough to take the weight of your case (even when really full). No tipping here — the double-wheel setup will prevent the embarrassment of a falling suitcase as you wait in line to check-in.

Finally, the designers at Delsey have been thoughtful enough to include a TSA-acceptable lock in the design, meaning TSA agents can easily open and inspect your bag should they need to.

Bottom Line: Available in 21”, 25”, and 29” versions, these are good solid cases with a fashionable edge.

Beautiful & Functional Hard Shell Case

5,171 Reviews

Samsonite Winfield Hardside Spinner Suitcase

Of all the Samsonite luggage pieces, this is by far the best looking. This beauty has a full-capacity design that offers tons of space for your belongings. Made from 100% polycarbonate, this case is made to absorb impact by flexing under stress and magically popping back into its original shape.

The lightweight locking telescopic handle has plenty of different height settings and is almost as strong as the case itself — perfect if you need something to lean on while you wait in line. The clever unified brushed pattern helps hide any unsightly dents or dings, though this case should be strong enough to handle anything that’s thrown at it.

And it’s not just the exterior that’s impressive either. Inside the case, you can use every inch of space to pack your belongings. There is also a fully-zipped interior divider and cross straps to keep your clothing in place during transit.

Need more space? No problem! The Winfield can expand up to 1.5 inches for all those extra souvenirs you need to bring home. And no more lugging a heavy case through the airport either — it moves effortlessly on 4 multi-directional spinner wheels.

For additional security, the case comes with side-mounted TSA locks that will deter thieves but make it easy for TSA agents who need to search your luggage. Chose from a variety of colors and sizes that range from 19 to 28 inches to suit your travel needs.

Bottom Line: A great looking case that’s built to last, this is the creme-de-la-creme of Samsonite luggage.

For Those Who Demand Performance & Good Looks

3,046 Reviews

Samsonite Omni Pc Hardside Spinner 28

The Samsonite brand is synonymous with great-looking suitcases that are tough as nails. Their Omni is no exception; its injection-molded polycarbonate shell looks super cool and is designed to withstand even the toughest of aircraft journeys.

Sleek and shiny on the outside, the micro-diamond texture is extremely scratch-resistant, meaning your case will look great no matter how many times you use it. It should also remain super easy to maneuver, as the 4 spinner wheels require pretty much zero effort to move around — you can practice 360-degree upright turns in any direction with just a light touch of your finger.

TSA locks come standard across the range, which means agents can access your bags when they need to, and your belongings will remain safe from malicious intrusions.

Weighing in at 10.5 lbs, this case will eat into your weight allowance without even a pair of socks packed inside — but it is also one of the most practical and durable cases out there.

Available in 20”, 24”, and 28” inch sizes and a nice range of sophisticated colors, these Samsonite cases should be a feature on anybody’s list of best luggage options.

Bottom Line: If it is good enough for an airline pilot who really has traveled the world, chances are this one is good enough for you too!

The Premium Checked Luggage

Briggs & Riley Baseline Expandable Upright

As one of the most popular manufacturers of cases in the U.S., it should be no surprise that Briggs & Riley have come up with yet another practical and super-cool suitcase with their Baseline range. It does, however, come at a premium price.

Available in a choice of 19”, 21”, 22”, 25”, and 28” versions, you should easily be able to find the right fit for you. Or buy 2: a matched set to check and carry-on!

Made from 1680D ballistic nylon outer fabric, this case promises to resist moisture and dirt as well as the wear and tear of everyday air travel. The hybrid fiberglass frame is lightweight and provides flexibility, durability, and the ability to cleverly retain its shape.

Perhaps most impressive is the patented CX expansion-compression system that comes as standard across the range, allowing you to increase your packing capacity by a whopping 26%, while compressing back to the original size to keep the contents secure.

It also has an “aircraft-grade” aluminum handle system with 4 stop heights to suit the size of every traveler. Holding between 72.5 and 90.2 liters of personal belongings, this suitcase is a great option for anyone looking to check their luggage.

Amazon Basics Softside Spinner Suitcase

Not everyone wants to compete in the big-brand luggage stakes, and this suitcase is a good Amazon alternative to some of the better-known brand names.

The low price tag means this suitcase is easily within range of most travelers. And while it may not last you a lifetime, it is a pretty good solution for those looking to travel occasionally, or on domestic flights.

This 25-inch softside spinner complies with check-in size restrictions and is lightweight enough to allow you to fill it with ease. Intriguingly, this case can shrink a little to fit into tight spaces, or grow a little bit to allow you an extra 25% packaging capacity with its expandable top section.

You’ll get smooth-rolling mobility in any direction with the 360-degree spinner wheels, and the telescopic handle can quickly be pulled out when you are on the move. Inside the suitcase is an effective organizer to keep your clothes safely stowed during transit and 3 zippered pockets for conveniently storing smaller items.

Bottom Line: Low price but not on quality, this basic case is a good option for those who want to spend more cash on vacation than they do on their luggage.

Softshell Luggage for Premium Travelers

Samsonite Aspire XLite 25″ Spinner

This time Samsonite brings you the Aspire Xlite, a cleverly-designed softshell case that has some intriguing features. The case is made from 1680D polyester, a man-made fiber produced by the polymerization of the product formed when an alcohol and organic acid react…now there’s something you probably never knew before!

The case has the trademark Samsonite spinner wheels allowing for zero-effort maneuverability on airport walkways and busy sidewalks alike. The retractable handle is a dream to use, as it glides seamlessly out from the case when you need to be mobile, and then slips back into the frame when not in use.

Inside there is also plenty to write home about. Cross straps encourage your luggage not to move around in transit, and there are some cool extra features: a Wetpak™ bag that keeps damp items away from clean and dry ones, and mesh pockets for extra organization.

If you have utilized all of the pockets and space, you can add a little more by taking advantage of the expanding capability that adds extra capacity for more sweaters, shoes or souvenirs.

At 9.5 lbs, this is surprisingly weighty for a soft shell case, but it’s also a premium brand that is made to last with lots of great quality features.

The Case for Families & Extended Stays

Briggs & Riley Brx Explore Large Expandable Spinner

With sleek curves and a sizable capacity for extra items, the Explore suitcase from Briggs & Riley is another great case for checking when you travel. Being the largest in the range, this is the perfect case for anyone jetting off for an extended stay, or a family who has plenty of gear they need to take along.

This suitcase is made from lightweight, durable 420D nylon, 600D polyester, and water-resistant tarpaulin that can hold its own while remaining light enough to maneuver and carry. The 4-wheel spinning system makes light work of airport terminal walkways, and the aircraft-grade aluminum handle system is comfortable and sturdy.

Once again, the brains behind the Briggs & Riley brand have included their patented CX expansion compression system, that allows you to increase your packing capacity by an impressive 26% before compressing back to its original size.

The self-repairing, durable YKK® Racquet Coil™ zippers are also a unique and well-thought-out feature that allow TSA staff to access your bag if they need to while promising many years of effortless opening and closing.

Inside, you’ll find a huge main compartment with tie-down straps and an additional 2 zippered compartments in the top for all those additional bits and pieces that need to come with you.

Bottom Line: Big and beautiful, the Explore suitcase really should be on your list if you do not intend to travel light.

One of the Most Popular Backpacks on the Market

Osprey Farpoint 55 Travel Backpack

Osprey is well-known for their high-quality, super roomy backpacks. The Farpoint is no exception, and this particular model is big enough to take you anywhere in the world while still being light enough to be carried easily.

Don’t want to carry a huge rucksack around when you reach your destination? No problem! Osprey’s famous 2-in-1 backpack solution includes a detachable daypack that can be used for excursions and exploration when you reach your destination.

The Farpoint is made from durable ripstop nylon, and the backpack will remain comfortable to carry thanks to the stowaway back panel, harness, and hip belt that can easily be adjusted to fit your size.

There is a large zip panel to the main compartment that makes it a cinch to pack and unpack, and the numerous zippered compartments are perfect for hiding valuables or items you need easy access to.

Hot Tip: The Fairview is similar in design but has been designed with the ladies in mind, offering slightly varied dimensions to suit the female frame. If you don’t feel the need for the detachable backpack, both versions are also available in the carry-on sized 40 liter, as well as 55- and 70-liter versions.

For Those Who Want an Osprey Pack on Wheels

Osprey Sojourn Wheeled Luggage, 28-Inch/80-Liter

This super-sized 80-liter backpack offers you 2 choices: roll it or wear it. Either offers an effective way to transport your belongings while enjoying your trip.

Featuring Osprey’s very own AG AntiGravity™ mesh back system, this backpack is incredibly comfortable to carry, and the torso-adjustable harness and hip belt mean you can customize the fit to your frame.

Almost as advanced as a 4-wheel drive, the injection molded HighRoad™ chassis is made from an ABS polymer plastic that makes it super hard-wearing and durable, while the polyurethane wheels are good to go over most types of terrain.

Internally, there are acres of space to stow your stuff. You’ll find plenty of pockets as well as the patented Osprey Wash Bag Cassette that helps keep clean and dirty clothes separate — and a wipe-clean liquid/accessories pocket makes light work of cleaning up spills.

The internal compression straps allow you to fully maximize the capacity of this bag, and are also really useful for securing your clothes during transit to limit creases and let you squeeze those last-minute extra items in.

Hot Tip: If you want to go all out, the Sojourn is also compatible with Osprey’s smaller day backpacks. The Daylight and Daylight Plus can be attached to the front, meaning you have a smaller, lighter option for daily use when you get there.

Final Thoughts

Checked luggage is nothing new, and travelers have been lugging huge suitcases around since commercial air travel was invented. What is new, though, is the huge variety of suitcases, bags, and backpacks that modern-day travelers can choose from.

Whatever your preference, go for quality, and be sure to check with your airline carrier about their checked luggage restrictions before you fly.

The best luggage of 2019

— Our editors review and recommend products to help you buy the stuff you need. If you make a purchase by clicking one of our links, we may earn a small share of the revenue. However, our picks and opinions are independent from USA Today’s newsroom and any business incentives.

Whether traveling for business, vacation or just spending a weekend visiting family, if your luggage won’t hold what you want to bring, your entire trip might be ruined. So when shopping for the perfect piece of luggage, how do you know which to buy that won’t feel like you’re lugging around a ton of bricks, or which bag will fit perfectly in a crowded airline’s overhead bin? Here at Reviewed, we’ve tested the best luggage, for its strength, size, capacity, and ease of use. We even built our own versions of airport baggage sizing devices to make sure we could recommend the best bags for your travel.

These are our current favorites:

1. The best checked luggage bag we tested: Travelpro Platinum Magna 2 29″ Expandable Spinner Suiter

Travelpro Seamus Bellamy/Reviewed

Travelpro’s Platinum Magna 2 is the best large suitcase to invest in right now. It’s made well enough that it’ll survive years of vacations, trips back and forth from university, or extended business travel. The 29-inch design offers 137 liters of packing space, which was more than adequate to house all of the items we packed into it during testing. Its rugged Cordura exterior ensures it’ll come out of your plane’s cargo hold in one piece, no worse for wear. There are also plenty of pockets to fit and house your every need on both the interior and exterior of the bag, while the bag itself is expandable, too. You should know that while this suitcase does come in a couple of different colors, it’s not the most stylish bag. For something a little more fashionable, check out The Large AWAY Travel Suitcase or the Briggs & Riley Large Expandable Spinner.

2. The best hard-sided checked bag we tested: The Large AWAY Travel Suitcase

AWAY bag Seamus Bellamy/Reviewed

If you’re looking for a new hard-sided suitcase to take on your next adventure, we think that The Large AWAY Travel Suitcase is a great option. Its tough yet flexible polycarbonate outer shell is available in a wide variety of colors and—with its textured, matte finish—is less susceptible to picking up scuffs and dirt than other hard-sided suitcases that we considered or tested. There aren’t any pockets on the outside of this suitcase, but the roomy interior features several mesh pockets and a clip-in compression panel that’ll help you keep your belongings organized while you’re on the road. As your trip wears on, you’ll be able to separate your dirty clothes from your clean stuff using the suitcase’s included laundry bag. And once everything you want to take with you is safely packed away, you can secure your belongings with the built-in combination lock.

3. The best wheeled carry-on bag we tested: Samsonite Flexis 21″ Spinner

Samsonite Flexis 21″ Spinner Reviewed / Seamus Bellamy

The Samsonite Flexis 21″ Spinner is the best carry-on bag of the moment. It’s total dimensions, at 22.5 x 15.0 x 9.0 inches, should allow it to fit into the overhead bins of the majority of flights offered by North America’s largest airlines. With 2520 cubic inches of packing space, this bag should allow a smart traveler to carry a week’s worth of clothes. The Flexis 21” Spinner’s high-quality wheels and retractable handle make crossing over sun-cracked pavement, concrete sidewalks, wood floors and tile comfortable and easy. As it’s a four-wheeled spinner, you’ll have no trouble maneuvering the Flexis around obstacles. There are, in addition to its roomy main compartment, three pockets sewn into the outside of this bag: the large exterior pocket is ideal for stuffing a sweater, iPad, or magazines into it. Two smaller zippered pockets—which are well-sized for an e-reader, passport, and charging cables—are built into the bag’s zippered lid.

4. The best soft-sided carry-on bag we tested: Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45

Tom Binh Seamus Bellamy/Reviewed

The Aeronaut 45 is small enough to fit easily into an overhead compartment and can be compressed to make it even smaller for storage. It has waterproof zippers and comes in two different fabrics that will wear tough or stay cleaner in a variety of colors. The frameless Aeronaut 45 feels feather-light compared to a spinner. Tom Bihn equipped the bag with handles, backpack straps and the ability to attach a shoulder strap for all modes of transportation. And in terms of compartments, the bag has a big main compartment that allows for organization in any way you choose and smaller ones on either end of the bag with tiny compartments in them.

5. One of our favorite hard-shell carry-ons: The AWAY Carry-On

While we haven’t tested AWAY’s The Carry-On, the company’s checked luggage performed so well that we don’t have any hesitation recommending it. While its rigid construction might not allow it into as many tight spaces as a soft-sided bag can be jammed into, this carry-on’s stylish exterior is easy to clean and tough enough to ensure that whatever you pack inside of it will arrive at your destination in one piece. Unlike the larger version, it includes an ejectable battery so you can charge your devices on the go and still be compliant with any airline rules and regulations.

6. Our favorite luxury checked bags: The Briggs & Riley Baseline Large Expandable 28″ Spinner

Briggs & Riley Amazon

We’ve never encountered a more robustly constructed suitcase than the Briggs & Riley Large Expandable Spinner. Its heavy-duty Cordura exterior is protected by tons of plastic bumpers and reinforcement points to ensure that it’ll last through a lifetime of travel. Sueded leather handles and smooth sliding zippers provide touches of luxury in what’s usually a merely functional piece of equipment. We also loved its internal expansion/compression mechanism, since it made it a cinch to size the suitcase to suit our needs.

7. The best packing cubes for travelers who need every inch: eBags Six-Piece Packing Cube Value Set

eBags Seamus Bellamy/Reviewed

This set of six packing cubes from eBags is a great choice for anyone looking to organize the contents of their suitcase or carry-on. For just under $50, you get a number of different-sized cubes for different items that allow you to organize with ease. The cubes are made of lightweight nylon and boast durable, fully finished interior seams, along with YKK zippers that open and close easily. eBags also sells similar cubes in sets of three and four, in case you usually have more or less stuff to pack.

8. The best luggage scales for travelers to pre-weigh bags: Dr. Meter Digital Luggage Scale

Dr. Meter Seamus Bellamy/Reviewed

The Dr. Meter Digital Luggage Scale is our pick for the best luggage scale, and it wins on a number of fronts. Most importantly, it was able to accurately measure all of the weights we threw at it to within a few decimal places, and it can do so in either pounds or kilograms. It comes with a bright and easy-to-read backlit display, its buttons are well placed, and its aluminum and plastic body feels tough enough to provide years of service. Since it only weighs 3.25 ounces, you’ll never even notice that you have it with you until it comes time to put it to use.

To use it, you simply turn it on, attach it to the handle of your luggage, and lift. Easy. Once it obtains a solid reading, the measurement shows up solidly on the display.
