In the models with high wheels, the wheels will range from 9 to 12 inches to provide better traction along with pivoting ability. Models with rear-wheel drive will be more beneficial. Apart from the wheel size, one must also look for solid wheels of high quality that can easily withstand any terrain.

    Safety Blades

To prevent any injury, safety blade override is used with alarm sensors. When you are not using the lawn mower, the blades will not work till you are resetting the alarm. This safety feature has been made mandatory for all the lawn mower, which are self-propelled. So a bar or lever is used for engaging the engine. Apart from that, other sensors are used in the lawn mower for detecting large objects. The main task of override is to prevent harm by stopping the blades.

    Recoil Starter

Recoil starter is another critical feature that a lawn mower must-have. With the help of the recoiling method, the lawn mower will combine the mechanical and manual power and ensure easy start-up. Many people would prefer a recoil starter instead of pulling it. Anyone can operate the lawn mower that has a recoil starter.

    Variable Speed

Self-propelled lawn mowers would preferably have different types of speed setting options. When you are guiding the mower, you can adjust the speed by using the bar or lever. It will have a low or high-speed setting option. One must always look for a lawn mower that will help them to adjust with the pace depending on the movement.

If the yard is geographically diverse and has an irregular growth section, then you would need lawn mowers with a standard speed setup.

    Electric Starter

Always opt for the electric start lawn mowers with a push button. By using an electric start, one can typically use a button for starting the engine. If you are facing any problem with the recoil starter, then you should go for the electric ones.

Safety Tips To Keep In Mind While Using A Self-Propelled Lawn Mower

Self-propelled lawn mower uses electricity or gas for operating, and it is a powerful machine. This type of lawn mower is great for large lawns and slopes. To use the self-propelled lawn mower, you will have to walk behind the mower and glide it to the places where you want to cut the grasses.

There are several safety tips and precautions which you will have to keep in mind to operate it properly. Some of the tips are discussed below:

    Remove Obstructions

Remove the rocks by inspecting the grass before you are beginning the mowing process. If stones are getting stuck in the mower while mowing, then it can fly and cause injury.

    Protective Gear

Before using the self-propelled lawn mower, one must dress appropriately. Wear comfortable clothes and a snug that can help in covering the entire body. Avoid jewelry or flowing hair as it increases the chances of getting caught somewhere. Apart from that, use goggles, footwears which are slip-resistant and gloves. Never start mowing barefoot.

    Blades

Self-propelled blades are potent and have the capability of causing dreadful injury. One must keep a safe distance from the leaves and ask the bystanders to maintain a safe distance from the machine while you are performing mowing. Always switch off the engine if someone is approaching you.

Remove The Blocked Grass With A Stick

While removing the clogged grass from the engine, use a stick. Never use your bare hand or bring your hand close to the engine when it is working.

    Adjustments

While making any adjustments in the blades, switch off the lawn mower. Make sure you are not leaving the lawn mower running in an unattended state.

    Secure The Parts

Before starting the process of lawn mowing, check all the parts to see if it is secured. Look for bolts or nuts if they are missing. The shield must be installed securely. Avoid operating the lawn mower without the protective shield.

Which is the best front or rear-wheel drive self-propelled mower?

There are several best rear and front-wheel drive self-propelled motors in the market. Many of them have been mentioned in the above product descriptions.

    Can self-propelled mowers be pushed?

Yes, one can quickly push any self-propelled lawn mower without damaging it. Though pushing the self-propelled mower will be hard. The construction of a self-propelled lawn mower is robust to ensure durability, and hence pushing it will require a lot of strength.

Can you pull a lawn mower backward?

Yes, one can pull a lawn mower in the reverse position, but it won’t work effectively. The first problem that you will encounter is with the grass discharge. The grass won’t be able to get removed, and the cut will be irregular. Since the blades will be running in the reverse to cut the grass, it is better not to expect it to work correctly.

What is the advantage of large rear wheels on a lawn mower?

When you are opting for a lawn mower with large wheels, then it will make it easy for you to roll over the imperfections in cutting uneven terrain. It is a perfect match for the grooves, rust, depression, or the rolling terrain. When the diameter of the wheel is more substantial, then it won’t damage the lawn during mowing.

How many ccs do I need in a lawn mower?

If you have a walk behind the mower engine, then it will require 140 -190 cc. CC or cubic centimeter is used for measuring the engine displacement. If you want to cut long grasses, then you would need a robust model with more cc. Depending on the job that you want to accomplish, you will have to purchase a lawn mower with the specific cc.

Read more details on each model below, but first, some lawn mower buying tips:

What type of lawn mower or tractor do I need?
The size and slope of your yard will be the main factors for choosing the right option, plus of course your willingness for physical exertion and time you have! The two main classifications are walk-behind or riding, the names pretty accurately conveying the difference.

Walk-behinds come in three basic types: manual where you’re doing all the work without any input from a motor or engine, push with an engine or motor to power the blades and self-propelled where an engine or motor powers the wheels and the blades.

Ride-ons are available in both manual and automatic transmissions (much like how you control a car) as well as hydrostatic which uses fluid instead of belts for power transfer. Zero turn tractors are suped-up riding mowers and enable better handling and higher speeds than traditional tractors as you control rotation with a pair of levers as opposed to a wheel (i.e. turning one will move you in a circle). If you’re looking for a more detailed breakdown of the types of mowers, we recommend you check out Popular Mechanics’ Lawn Mower Guide.

As a simple rule of thumb, you should get a walk behind mower if you have less than ½ an acre. Berendsohn says instead of considering the overall lot acreage, it’s better to look specifically at how much cutting space you have. When factoring in just grass, he recommends a walk-behind for anything less than 10,000 square feet, which is just shy of a quarter of an acre for comparison. Anything more and you’ll want to opt for a riding option.

What’s the deal with robotic lawn mowers?
A relatively new entrant to the field, these operate similar to robotic vacuums whereby the lawn is mapped out by you setting up a wired perimeter, and then the mower should be able to cut the lawn without any intervention from you. Pricing is still quite high on these considering the quality of the cut.

What other features matter when it comes to lawn mowers?
Once you determine the type of mower or tractor you’ll want, there are a slew of other considerations you should be mindful of:

•Warranty: This is a product category where you want to look for a robust warranty to ensure if something goes wrong you’ll be covered.

•Wheel size: You’ll want to consider both the front and rear wheels. You’ll want taller rear wheels if you’re going over rougher surfaces.

•Cutting options: Mowers can mulch, discharge (either to the side or rear), or bag clippings. Some mowers can only support one type of cutting option, some two, some all three. Depending upon what you are trying to accomplish and how frequently you cut your lawn will determine what’s ideal for you.

•Storage space: Most electric push models can be placed vertically to save on the footprint it’s taking up when stored. Only specific gas models can handle this as it requires special engine seals to ensure gas won’t leak out.

•Advanced features: Some tractors have the ability to switch mowing modes without a manual blade change required – super handy! For cordless electric machines, some have removable batteries which makes storage and charging simpler. My favorite, tractors with automatic drive for adjusting speeds easily.

•Bonus features: Extras like an ergonomic seat and cup holder may not be lead determinants, but sure are nice to have! While we’re at it, cruise control is definitely another nice-to-have.

Of course, you’ll have to factor in your budget when weighing these features out. In the end it will be a tradeoff of performance, comfort and durability. Models start at a few hundred dollars, but prices can climb well into the thousands. The Good Housekeeping Institute Engineering team has looked at lawn mowers in the past for ease of use and performance capabilities. While a full battery test has not been completed recently (we’re waiting on some warmer weather!), based upon brand experience, speaking with other industry experts, and knowledge of specifications and engines, these are the picks we feel are worthy of beautifying your lawn:

11 Best Lawn Mowers for the Money

    Buyers Guide Questions

What Lawn Mower Should I Get?

A lawn mower is one of the best and most essential tools for any lawn. While you can avoid purchasing other landscaping tools, there’s no avoiding the need to cut your grass regularly. Not only does it keep your lawn healthy and attractive, but it also conveys the appearance of a well-kept home, boosting curb appeal and resale value. To make your garden look extra tidy, it’s worth investing in a high-quality leaf blower, as well as a wheelbarrow.

Before you go out and buy a new mower, it’s important to understand the options available so you can make an educated purchasing decision. There are basically four types of mowers: gas, electric, riding, and manual reel mowers. In order to decide which you should get, let’s take a quick look at each.

    Electric Mowers

There are two kinds of electric mowers to choose from—corded and cordless. Corded electric mowers are powered through an electrical cord, meaning you’ll have to run an extension cord from a power outlet in order to operate the tool. These mowers can run as long as power is supplied to them, making them great for prolonged use. The downside is that you are restricted by the length of your power cord, though with a variety of lengths available, this is an easy issue to work around.

Cordless mowers run on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, allowing you to operate the tool easily without the hassle of a power cord. The trade-off with cordless mowers is that you’re limited by the operation time offered by the battery. Most people work around this limitation by having a fully-charged spare battery on hand.

These tools are quieter and more environmentally-friendly than their gas-powered siblings, offering maintenance-free use with zero emissions. They can be started with a simply push of a button and can usually be turned off just as easily. These mowers are normally very light and compact, making them a great choice for anyone not interested in pushing a heavy machine around.

Most have smaller cutting decks than their gas-operated counterparts, meaning that the path of grass that it’s capable of cutting on each pass is smaller. For these reasons, electric mowers are ideal for small-to-medium sized yards, as well as for tackling awkward, hard-to-reach areas.

    Gas Mowers

Gas-powered mowers are powerful machines that use gasoline that you can easily get from the local gas station. They normally run on a two or four stroke engine which requires regular maintenance. Due to this, they need more care than electric mowers in order to keep them running efficiently. The benefit of these fuel-powered mowers is that they are more powerful than their electric counterparts.

Plus, you don’t have to worry about your battery running low or having a limited reach due to an electrical cord. If you run out of gas, you simply fill it up again. These mowers are normally very heavy and sturdy and have wider cutting decks that allow you to make larger cutting paths as you mow, and the best at speeding up the process.

    • Cutting Deck ( inch )

Thanks to their power and size, they’re perfect for medium to large sized lawns. While these are fantastic performers, due to their weight, we recommend looking into a self-propelled model so you can avoid having to push the mower around your whole lawn.

    Reel Mowers

If you’re looking for a light, affordable alternative to a power tool, there are also old-fashioned reel mowers available. These mowers were once common but have fallen out of favor due to the popularity of gas and electric mowers. But they’ve seen resurgence due to improvements in design that have made them a bit easier to use than they once were.

These manual tools require you to push them. As you proceed, the lawn mower blades cut grass with a shearing motion. There are bag attachments that can catch some of your grass but most of the clippings are left behind and act as a natural fertilizer for your lawn.

The benefits of these manual mowers are that they require virtually no maintenance and no fuel or power source is needed. Plus, they are virtually silent and create no harmful emissions. While these mowers are an eco-friendly alternative, operating them can be a bit of an aerobic workout so they’re best suited for small yards.

    Riding Mowers

The riding mower is the big boy on the block. They can be rather expensive but these gas-powered machines make mowing grass easy. You simply sit back and drive across your lawn, saving you the hassle that comes with a walk-behind model. While powerful and extremely efficient, due to their size and turning ability, they are best suited for medium to large size yards.

Which Lawn Mower is Best for Me?

When it’s time to buy a lawn mower, it’s important to match it to the size of your lawn to get the best out of your money. There are four types available today: gas, electric, manual reel, and riding mowers. By understanding what each model is best suited for, you’ll be able to make the chore of mowing your grass as easy as possible.

    Gas-Powered

Gas-powered, walk-behind mowers offer more power and a wider cutting swath, making quick work of even the most demanding lawn. These high-powered machines can handle thick grass and come in either manual or self-propelled mowers. The downside of these mowers is that they will require some periodic maintenance and you’ll have to go to the gas station to pick up fuel.

They also are very loud and tend to give off high emissions, which aren’t great for the environment. Due to their ability to run for hours and cut wide swathes of grass quickly, they are perfect for anyone with a large lawn and can even conquer uneven terrain.

    Electric

Electric mowers come in two forms: corded and cordless. These tools are lighter and more compact than their gas-powered rivals, offering improved maneuverability. With no emissions and reduced noise, they are a terrific eco-friendly alternative to combustion mowers. The downside of these mowers is their limited range. With narrower cutting decks, they require more passes to mow grass.

Plus, you are restricted due to battery life and the reach of your power cord, meaning they’re impractical for use on large yards and very demanding landscapes. With virtually no maintenance required, reduced noise, no emissions, and a lightweight build, these mowers are perfect for anyone with a small to medium sized lawn.

    Manual Reel Mowers

Designed for manual push operation, these tools are an economical, environment-friendly alternative to their powered competitors. They offer quiet operation, no maintenance, and emit zero pollutants. While best for small yards, due to the effort involved in operating them, these mowers aren’t ideal for uneven terrain and large properties.

These mowers are the most expensive option on the market. But they do have some serious benefits. They are powerful and make cutting grass simple. Since they work like a car, they can be operated easily, eliminating any user fatigue or exertion.

The downside of these mowers is the hefty price tag that comes with it plus the large size of the machine. They’re not going to work if you are looking to get into hard-to-reach spaces and you also have to keep storage in mind. However, a zero turn commercial mower will get into all the hard to reach spots with ease.

    What’s Best for You?

For a small, even lawn, a reel mower is the most economical and green option. If you have a small or medium size lawn with some hard-to-reach areas, an electric model is perfect for you. For medium or large yards with uneven terrain, you can’t go wrong with a gas-powered tool.

And if you own a large piece of property and don’t have any size restrictions, then a riding model might be ideal. With several options out there, it can be confusing but as long as you keep the size of your lawn in mind, you’ll be able to buy the model that is best for you.

Who Makes the Best Lawn Mower Battery?

While most gas-powered walk-behind mowers don’t require batteries to run, you certainly need one to operate riding mowers or a lawn tractor. Why? Because these mowers usually have components that aren’t found on smaller mowers such as headlights, ignitions, starters, and electric clutches. These parts require the aid of a battery to work.

The battery is already installed when you purchase it, so unless it dies on you, you’re not going to have to worry about replacement. But it’s still good to know who makes the best battery so you can be confident that the model you are buying is going to run smoothly and reliably.

One of the best batteries out there is supplied by Husqvarna. They’ve built a reputation for excellent small and large landscaping options and their tools are built to last. For instance, the Husqvarna YAT18542 tractor comes with a powerful Husqvarna OEM 30 amp battery that is capable of running for at least 3 years, if not considerably longer.

When you purchase this brand, you can count on durable power and excellent performance. With a lot of solid brands on the market, it can be confusing. But if you’re looking for a riding mower or lawn models with an excellent battery and high-performance capabilities, you can’t go wrong with buying one of Husqvarna’s mowers, such as the Husqvarna YTA24V48 mower.

Which is the Best Buy Cordless Lawn Mower?

If you’re on the market for a cordless model, one of the best mowers out there is the Greenworks 25322 cordless mower. Why? Because if you’re looking for a battery-operated grass cutting tool, you want something that provides all the perks these eco-friendly tools offer, namely: solid performance, reliability, and excellent maneuverability. And most of all, the Greenworks 25322 is maintenance-free, quiet, emits no emissions, and can easily be stored in even the smallest shed. Offering power, endurance, and versatility, the Greenworks 25322 is a fantastic lawn mower that beats out many of the more expensive mowers on the market.

There was once only one way to power traditional walk-behind mowers—with sweat. To advance these tools, you had to push it forward without any assistance. While easy for small, flat yards, doing this on large or uneven terrain can be extremely tiring. Luckily, self-propelled mowers are now very common and help take the effort out of mowing. This feature, which is more common in gas mowers but can also be found in some high-end electric options, uses a transmission to power the drive wheels.

Instead of having to push, the tool moves itself forward, making mowing your grass effortless. Self-propelled mowers come in single or variable speed mowers. You simply engage a speed control lever and let the tool do all the hard work. You don’t have to push, instead you simply walk behind and guide it around your lawn.

Purchasing self-propelled mowers allows you to make the once tedious task of cutting the grass easy. And by eliminating the need to struggle when operating on large or hilly terrain, they are capable of drastically reducing it takes to cut the grass. These mowers are a fantastic option for anyone looking to save time and energy.

How Many Years Does a Lawn Mower Last?

Depending on the model, buying one of the best mowers can be expensive. So it’s only natural to ask how long it will last. The average lifespan of a lawn mower depends on a few factors such as the manufacturer, size, usage, and maintenance. While the manufacturer’s warranty offers a suggested life expectancy, yours may last significantly longer if you make sure to give it proper care. With proper maintenance and care, it can last between 8 and 10 years.

But if you neglect it, it’s possible that it will only last half that time. Properly maintained mowers will always last longer than ones that weren’t maintained well. So if you want to extend the life of your mower and enjoy up to 10 years or more of reliable use, keep some things in mind. If mowers are going to be stored for a while, they need to have their gas removed to avoid rust and carburetor issues.

Clean the blades periodically, scraping away any grass and mud to prevent wear and rust. And you should change the air filter, spark plug, and oil at least once a year. Most importantly, when in doubt, check the owner’s manual since they often include maintenance tips that will help ensure your machine will be providing quality results for years to come.

The Sun Joe MJ401E was my choice has i have only a small yard and was looking for a lawn mower on a Budget.

While the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) estimates that there were nearly 3,500 reported incidents of injuries to children under the age of 18 caused by lawn mowers that were treated in hospital in the United States in 2014, most of these injuries are preventable with just a few safety precautions.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children under the age of 12 not operate walk behind lawn mowers, and children under the age of 16 should not operate a riding lawn mower. Those old enough should be shown how to properly use the machine and be supervised until you are confident they have the hang of things.

Wearing closed-toed shoes, eye and ear protection, and gloves are all important safety measures. Loose hair and clothing should be tied back, mowing in reverse should be discouraged, and be mindful of cords when operating. Allow gas-powered models to cool completely before refuelling and never allow a passenger on a riding mower.

There are several styles of lawn mowers, including:

    Riding

Riding lawn mowers, or lawn tractors, are pricier than walk behind models but are well-suited for large properties. They make lighter work of lawn mowing, and generally mow a large swath at a time.

    Walk behind

Walk behind, or push mowers, come in electric, gas or reel styles with each having its pros and cons. They are best-suited for small to large properties (depending on how much effort you want to put into cutting your lawn) and are the most affordably-priced. Reel and electric models produce no harmful emissions and are generally quiet to operate, whereas gas models will require fuel and create emissions and loud noise. Gas models will generally cut the largest swath, and all will require regular blade sharpening in order to provide the ideal cut.

    Tow behind

Tow behind mowers attach to tractors, ATVs or other such vehicles and are suitable for large properties or pastures. They are typically quite heavy and costly, but can cut extremely wide swaths in a single pass.

Engine quality, mower materials, available features and accessories will all impact the pricing of each of these mowers.

    10 Best Cheap Lawn Mowers

    Cheap Lawn Mower Buyer’s Guide

Many homeowners own an outside space which is highly-valued across the summer season, although perhaps neglected across the fall and winter seasons. Purchasing a high-quality yet low-cost lawnmower can help you to ensure that your outside space looks great and is usable all-year round.

    Features of a Lawn Mower

A lawn mower may be powered by either electricity, a Lithium battery, or fuel, or it may just use manpower. The type of lawn mower which you purchase depends entirely upon your preferences. Fuel-powered lawnmowers may have a reputation of being a stronger and more powerful tool for your lawn, although the pollution they release is somewhat unnecessary.

It is possible to gain a similar level of power with the models available on today’s market by utilizing electricity or through using a cordless Lithium battery-powered mower. Likewise, the manpower lawnmowers available today are strong and precise, although perhaps just suitable for small lawn areas.

A lawn mower may state that it is capable of bagging or mulching. This describes the way that the grass clippings are collected. A bagging lawnmower will just collect the grass clippings for you to empty later, while a mulching lawnmower will collect the grass clippings and finely chop them, rapidly breaking the clippings down by soil microorganisms to release nutrients from the mulched clippings back into the soil.

Many lawnmowers will contain the ability to adjust the height of the lawnmower handle, usually with a height adjustment range of around 3-inches. This ensures that shorter or taller users can effectively use the lawnmower and remain comfortable during the usage.

How do I Sharpen Lawnmower Blades?

After multiple usages, the blades within your lawnmower may begin to lose their sharpness. Typically, after around 25 hours of grass cutting, the lawnmower blades may need to be sharpened, allowing you to gain the best out of your mower and receive the best results for your lawn. In order to sharpen your lawnmower blades, you should first disconnect the power source and the spark plug, ensuring optimal safety.

Next, turn your lawn mower onto the side to ensure that the carburetor is facing up. It is important to ensure that your mower’s engine oil or other liquids do not spill out when you do this, however. Place a mark on the downward-facing side of the blade so that you are able to fully reassemble the mower once you have finished sharpening the blades. You could use a marker, spray paint or even a piece of masking tape to do this.

Wedge a sturdy piece of wood between the deck of the mower and the blade, to hold the blade in place, and loosen the respective nut or bolt. Take the blade out and then clean the blade fully from any grass clippings or any build-up of rust. Using a clamp in your workstation, secure the blade and then sharpen the blade with a file, following the angle of the factory bevel as you sharpen.

Reinstall the blade back into the lawn mower, tightening the bolt or nut, spraying some WD-40 across the bolt in order to prevent rust.

How do I Start a Lawnmower?

The way that you should start your lawnmower will vary depending upon the brand and model, so always ensure that you check the manufacturer’s instructions first. However, in general, there are some guidance points to consider before using your lawnmower. First, place your lawn mower in an open, grassy area, away from any rocks or other objects.

Check the power source, whether that is gas, oil, or electricity. Ensure that any oil and gas are of the correct level and the correct type, and ensure that any electricity source is safe. Check the spark plug and the carburetor to ensure that they are safe, and then open the throttle. Press or pull the starter button or cord.

What Type of Oil is Suitable for a Lawnmower?

For a lawnmower, you should use small engine oil, such as SAE 30 for warmer temperatures of 40 degrees Fahrenheit and higher, or SAE 10W-30 for a varying range of 0 degrees to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

You may think that cutting your lawn as short as possible is the ultimate aim when mowing your lawn. However, experts aim to ensure that only ⅓ of the grass length is cut at any one time. Mowing your lawn lightly yet regularly will achieve the best results and prevent the grass from going into ‘shock.’

Some people think that it is not safe to mow the lawn if the grass is damp. In fact, it is perfectly safe to mow damp grass, and good results can be achieved. SImply mow the lawn slowly and gently.
