Aveda hair thickening tonic reviews

August Favorites: Thickening Tonic

We caught up with stylist Jasmine Barron from our Clackamas location to find out more about the Aveda fave with a big time cult following, Thickening Tonic! Thin haired girls listen up, because this is a product that you must have in your beauty cabinet!

How long have you been in the industry and why do you love Aveda products? I have been in the industry for 5 years now. And I chose Aveda because it is a company you can trust, a company you can stand behind.

What is Aveda Thickening Tonic? Thickening tonic is the best. First it has a thermal protectant in it which is amazing, because we need more of that then we realize. But what is does is actually thickens your hair, without adding frizz.

What hair type is this product best for? Everyone, Literally everyone. It is such a great addition to your regular routine.

How do you use it? So this is your first step after showering, because it has that thermal protectant you will want to apply before heat. Spray, 8-10 sprays from your new growth to your ends. I throw in an extra spray or two in my own hair because i just love the effect so much. The blow dry as usual, for added bonus round brushing will really give you extra body! The great thing is that even if you flat iron your hair straight, you still get extra body!

Is there any Pro-tips for using the product? Not really, all its magic is in the main use. I have used it in my hair dry before and i feel like it adds a little extra texture and maybe even takes away oil- but who knows!

What is the difference between this product and the ever classic, Aveda Volumizing Tonic? Thickening Tonic is going to give you more of an overall, root to end, swell. So think fuller not just bigger. Volumizing Tonic is lift at the roots!

Okay, what about Invati, what is the difference? Invati is actually helping aid in hair re-growth. So it is more for hair loss.

This month(August 2016) when you buy any one product at $25+, you can grab Aveda Thickening Tonic for just $15 ( that is half off!) What would your product pick be? Pure Abundance Style prep because you will get beautiful movement and fullness, plus double up on that thermal protectant!

Volume is the holy grail of hair for those with fine locks. Achieving a full-bodied, glossy look is no mean feat, though. Bazaar caught up with Aveda’s global educator Bea Watson to find out how to create long-lasting volume at home without resorting to hair extensions.

Volume vs fullness

There is always some confusion between creating volume and having fuller tresses. “Volumised hair has lift and height at the root area, however not all volumising products are designed to give fullness,” says Watson. “Fullness is where the hair is thicker to touch from the roots to the ends.” Most women, especially those with naturally finer tresses, want both.

Long-lasting results

To make sure your style lasts the whole day, the key is to use your products in the correct areas. “Volumising products should be used in the roots to add height,” says Watson. However, thickening products, such as Aveda’s brand new Thickening Tonic (which launches in May), should be used from root to tips. This specific spray can be used on wet or dry hair and expands the follicle to give the look and feel of thicker locks. Watson also recommends finishing with a volumising spray to fix the style.

The pony club

Often, when pulling hair up into a ponytail, height can be lost at the roots. “There are many tricks we use backstage to get that undone ponytail look,” says Watson. “Product doesn’t always need to go through all of the hair. If you can see your scalp when you pull your hair back, use a thickening spray around your hairline.” In terms of creating a fuller ponytail, spritz more thickening spray through and lightly backcomb it with a narrow bristle brush. For long-lasting results, Watson recommends blow-drying in the thickening spray.

Products We Love: Thickening Tonic

We sat down with Vancouver Instructor Beau to find out about a new Aveda fave,Thickening Tonic. A relative newbie to the Aveda styling line this product has garnered some serious love from stylists and connoisseurs of volume alike. Since Beau knows a thing or two about achieving the perfect coif, we knew he would be the man for the job!

How long have you been in the industry? I first began selling professional beauty products in March of 2005.

Why do you love Aveda? I fell in love with Aveda in 2004 when I was going to school in Santa Barbara. The experience center on State Street lured me in with the fragrance and envy inducing green glass Botanical Kinetics skincare bottles, the way my skin looked and felt afterwards kept me coming back. As a student on a budget, book ending the open and close of each day was a ritual that let me feel just a little bit indulgent. 12 years down the line I’m happy to still be learning about and growing my list of favorites/must-haves and sharing those experiences with my students and guests.

What is Aveda Thickening Tonic? Thickening Tonic is an all over body building spray to create lasting fullness in the hair.

What hair type is this product best for? Thickening Tonic is good for anyone who wants to plump up their style, however those with medium to finer textures will probably appreciate the results the most.

How do you use it? Always read labels! Manufacturers will generally tell you exactly how to use the product to get the best results that have been proven during development. It’s very important to shake Thickening Tonic well before use! Sometimes ingredients in certain products will separate when left standing, shaking a product before use will redistribute the ingredients evenly throughout the solution delivering the full benefit. Also combing the product through the hair ensures even saturation so that no strand gets left behind. Blow dry and style as desired…Flipping upside down and finger drying the hair will leave a beachy, more casual finish. Using a round brush will give the most control and added polish.

How is this product different from Aveda classic,Volumizing tonic? Volumizing Tonic is more of a root boost, meaning it should be applied closer to the root area (think section-by-section at the base when round brushing) to create added lift when blow drying. Thickening Tonic is used throughout the style and will plump up hair root to tip. I also tend to recommend Volumizing Tonic if the hair lacks shine.

Is there any fun fact about the product? It’s loaded with several plant based thickeners and proteins, Amla fruit from India is the real star, which is also featured in the Invati line.A little bit goes a long way! The size of any products packaging is often indicative of how much you should use. (Like the size of a typical eye cream vs an all over moisturizer) Personally I also like the finish when left in the hair to air dry or be diffused. It becomes more like a salt spray with less shine but still adds body.

This month, if guests buy one regularly priced product ($25 or more), they can get the Thickening tonic for half off- just 15 bucks. What would your product picks be, if you were checking out? For guests with shorter hair or men, the new Invati Men Nourishing Exfoliating Shampoo. This has become my daily routine to save time and maximize fullness in my hair whether I have time to blow dry or not. Especially helpful when traveling to avoid bringing too many pieces. For longer haired guests I’m really fond of how the Pure Abundance Volumizing Clay Conditioner performs, it gives incredible softness but also sets the stage for added fullness.

Tested March 2017

With ingredients including aloe and wheat amino acids, Aveda’s Volumizing Tonic claims to create a lightweight and voluminous style with a glossy finish. This root lift spray is designed for fine to medium hair and should be applied when the hair is damp.

We found that this product received mixed results from our testers. After trialling it, the majority agreed that was easy to apply, quick to dry and it provided a long-lasting, voluminous finish. However, some were not as pleased by the resulting texture it produced.

Some noted that their hair felt sticky after application and felt overly stiff to the touch. A few testers also pointed out that, while their hair was voluminous, it could appear thicker with a more dense finish.

Thinning hair/hair loss is the #2 global hair care concern, affecting four in 10 woman. Aveda addressed this concern with Invati Solutions for Thinning Hair and has now developed a hair styling product that delivers immediate thickening benefits.

Things you will love…

  • 97% naturally derived formula that instantly thickens hair in just one use
  • Amla helps thicken each individual hair strand. Amla is an Ayurvedic herb used by the people of India for centuries to support healthy hair.
  • Wheat protein helps protect hair from heat-styling damage
  • Formula delievers thicker, fuller hair from roots to ends and lasts all day

The difference between Aveda’s New Thickening Tonic and Volumizing Tonic:
Thickening tonic increases the diameter of each individual hair strand, resulting in the appearance of more hair from roots to ends. Volumizing Tonic creates lift and height at the roots, resulting in the appearance of bigger hair.

Love Your Hair Again with Aveda Thickening Tonic

If you have “thick-challenged” hair, you will LOVE this new product

Try Aveda’s newest product – Thickening Tonic

While Aveda is constantly researching, creating and releasing new products, its latest styling spray – Thickening Tonic – has quickly become the most poplar new product in years. Many clients got a preview in the salon before the product was even available and were immediately hooked. Ever since Thickening Tonic has been released, it has been flying off of our shelves at Rick Mosley Hair. Here’s why…

Aveda’s new Thickening Topic Styling Spray is proven to thicken thin, fine and limp hair with just one use. Like a tree that adds rings, Thickening Tonic bonds to your hair, adding a layer that instantly expands each strand of your hair from the roots all the way to the ends. And, just like all Aveda products, it is naturally derived from plants and smells oh-so-good!

To use this revolutionary product, spray it on generously – from roots to ends – after towel-drying your hair. Be sure it is the first product you put on your hair to allow it to bond with your strands. After spraying, just comb through your entire head to distribute the product evenly. Next blow-dry your hair with a round brush, using a nozzle to direct the air down each section. Then, brush your dry hair to create your own personal style.

Combine with Aveda’s Volumizing Tonic and Dry Remedy Daily Moisturizing Oil after washing your hair and it’s a one, two, three punch for beautiful luxurious tresses. It works so well, you won’t have to hold your curling iron or other heated styling tools to your hair as long as usual either.

You’ll love the results. This product adds volume, plumpness and fullness and makes hair more lively and healthy looking. With that said, it does not cause hair to go flat or feel stiff, oily or sticky. You can even feel an amazing and soft texture difference throughout your hair after using it.

Stop by Rick Mosley Hair today to see for yourself how Aveda Thickening Tonic adds fullness, sheen and manageability that lasts all day long, or ask for it to be used on your hair during your next appointment. We promise that the only thing you’ll wish is that it was available in a larger bottle!
