Artem Chigvintsev Says Being Cut from Dancing With the Stars Felt Like a ‘Punch in the Stomach’

Artem Chigvintsev was devastated when he found out he hadn’t been cast in the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars.

The pro dancer appeared on Wednesday’s episode of his girlfriend Nikki Bella‘s podcast, The Bellas, and opened up about how he found out he had been cut.

“I don’t know where to begin, to be honest with you,” he said. “Obviously, it was a massive shock. Having those calls is never, never, never fun.”

Chigvintsev, 37, said he was kept in the dark about the decision until Friday, Aug. 16 — just days before the full cast was officially announced on Good Morning America the following Wednesday. Though he acknowledged there was always a chance he wouldn’t be brought back as a pro, as a longtime DWTS alum, Chigvintsev said he thought he would still be involved in the new season, even as a troupe member.

He also said that since he had been having “positive conversations” with producers over text in the weeks leading up to the announcement, he was “99 percent” sure that he would be cast. But when he still hadn’t heard anything by Friday morning, he realized something was up. He said he contacted producers at around 10 a.m. and was told they’d get back to him that afternoon.

According to Chigvintsev, he didn’t find out the news until he got a text from an executive producer around 8 p.m. that evening, asking if he was free to talk.

“So I immediately called and the first sentence I heard was, ‘Hey, we have bad news for you,’” he recalled.

Chigvintsev said he’s doing his best to move on, though it hasn’t been easy.

“I dedicated 10 years of my life to that company,” he said. “And getting let go three days before an announcement, that’s like a punch in the stomach, really.”

“It’s not even a job, it’s a lifestyle if you’ve been doing it for a very, very long time,” he explained. “There was never really a thought in my mind that I going to be doing it. … But getting this call and , ‘There’s going to be no involvement in the show from now on’ — it’s like going through a breakup after 10 years.”

A rep for ABC did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Bella, 35, is furious on his behalf.

“They’ve had these dancers on hold since March. And they don’t give them compensation for it. They’ve been all unemployed since March,” she said. “That made me really upset, because how do you put people on hold and then cut them last minute? … Now all the fall gigs are booked, and that part to me was so unfair.”

Now, Chigvintsev is focused on the future — but he can’t help but doubt himself at times.

“The one thing I’ve done all my life, and I study it and I dedicated pretty much all of my time for the past two decades, is dancing,” he said. “Being on a show like Dancing with the Stars for what I do, that is the top of the game. There is really no other job that gives you the satisfaction of choreographing, of teaching and getting the recognition in that spectrum.”

“Did I get cut because they didn’t think I was good enough for the show?” he wondered.

“The good thing is you always have me,” Bella said. “I’ll always be here.”

The upcoming season will star The Supremes’ Mary Wilson, Karamo Brown, The Bachelorette‘s Hannah Brown, supermodel Christie Brinkley, country star Lauren Alaina, actor James Van Der Beek, NFL legend Ray Lewis, The Office star Kate Flannery, pop star Ally Brooke, Lamar Odom, comedian and actor Kel Mitchell and President Donald Trump’s former press secretary Sean Spicer.

Season 28 of Dancing with the Stars premieres Sept. 16 on ABC.

Artem Chigvintsev says he was just as shocked as fans to learn that he wouldn’t be returning as a pro for season 28 of Dancing With the Stars.

The 37-year-old dancer recently sat down with his girlfriend, Nikki Bella, and her twin sister, Brie Bella, on their Bellas podcast, where he candidly discussed what it was like being cut from the show.

Artem revealed that he got the heartbreaking phone call from producers just a couple of days before the cast announcement was made on Good Morning America.

“God, I don’t know where to begin, to be honest with you, because obviously, it was a massive shock, and having those calls are never, never fun. Even if it’s positive, the fact is, it’s always terrifying to get that call,” said Artem, who first joined the show in 2014 as a member of the troupe before being promoted to pro for season 19. “It’s weird. Dedicating something for the past 10 years, putting your absolute all … it’s not even a job, it’s a lifestyle if you’ve been doing it for a very long time.”

Artem continued on, admitting, “There was never really a thought in my mind that I’m not going to be doing it.” He said he was texting with producers regularly in the weeks leading up to the announcement, and because it was always a “positive” conversation, he was “99 percent” sure he’d be on the show.

“There’s always a chance, as a pro, you might be doing some performances on the show and there’s still an involvement in some sort. But getting this call, , ‘There’s gonna be no involvement with the show from now on,’ it’s like going through a breakup of 10 years,” he confessed. “And good memories of a breakup. The show really exposed me. Not just as a dancer, or a teacher, it’s also exposed me as a person who’d be able to find those talents in my partners … and get something out of it that they’d be so proud of. It’s like, you’re making other people’s lives so fulfilled; that’s what the show is all about.”

“So that’s the hardest to let go, because I can always dance, I can always choreograph. But that the hardest part,” he added. “I dedicated 10 years of my life to that company and being let go a few days before the announcement, that’s, like, a punch in the stomach, really. I can’t let any one decide my fate from now on.”

Luckily, Artem can always count on the Bella twins for support. The sisters agreed that DWTS “lost one of their best dancers,” and Nikki is not OK with the way the decision went down.

“They’ve had these dancers on hold since March,” said Nikki, who competed during season 25 of the show with Artem. “They don’t give them compensation for it. So, literally, they’ve been all unemployed since March.”

“That made me really upset because how do you put people on hold and then cut them last minute?” she asked. “Because now, they’ve missed out on fall jobs. All the fall gigs are booked. And that part, to me, was so unfair. Cut them and give them compensation.”

After hearing about the podcast conversation, former pro Anna Trebunskaya (who competed on 11 seasons with stars like Jerry Rice, Sugar Ray Leonard and Drew Lachey) posted a lengthy message to her Facebook page in support of Artem.

“So people always ask, ‘When are you coming back to Dancing with the Stars?’ Gosh, I wish it was that easy,” she wrote. “As if it’s completely the dancers choice… we all wish it was that way but the reality is, well, it’s a reality TV show. There’s a huge casting process involved and a hierarchy of executives that decide these things and at the end of the day, the pro dancers are a piece of that complex puzzle. We’re not the ones making executive decisions, but we contribute and play a part to this great machine. It’s part of showbiz, or any biz, for that matter.”

“Being a part of DWTS for over 10 years myself I truly get what some of the dancers go through after they are being ‘let go’ (or hosts or musicians or producers or anyone else that’s been involved for years),” she continued. “At the end of the day, all you can do is just be grateful that you were part of this experience, that you did something fun and creative and met some great people along the way. But that’s true about everything in life. I will always cherish my time on the show and I’m so happy to be part of the DWTS family. And who knows what the future may bring … Thank you Artem Chigvintsev for talking about it and being so honest.”

So people always ask “When are you coming back to Dancing with the Stars ?” Gosh I wish it was that easy. As if it’s…

Longtime fans of the show were devastated to learn that Artem and fellow fan-favorite pro Sharna Burgess would not be returning to the show in any capacity for season 28. Many of them have been vocal on social media ever since, urging ABC to “rethink” their decision and “bring them back.”

A source told ET at the time that it’s not uncommon for dancers to take a season off and then come back for another season, adding that Sharna and Artem will still remain a part of the DWTS family. ET has reached out to ABC for comment.

Earlier this month, ET spoke with DWTS host Tom Bergeron, who said he recently spoke with Sharna. Based on their conversation, it seems she was just as surprised by the news as Artem.

Dancing With the Stars returns for its all-new season Monday, Sept. 16 at 8 p.m ET/PT on ABC. In the meantime, hear more in the video below.

‘Dancing With the Stars’ Season 28 Cast Revealed — See Who’s Competing!

As expected, Artem Chigvintsev is not returning to “Dancing with the Stars” this season — and neither is reigning champ Sharna Burgess. The two pros were MIA during Wednesday’s cast announcement on “Good Morning America,” and both shared in lengthy Instagram posts shortly afterwards that they were sad and disappointed not to be returning.

“I just want to say how sad it makes me feel not to be part of Season 28 of ‘DWTS,’ Chigvintsev wrote. “It’s been 10 years since I have joined this absolutely, one of a kind, incredible show! It has given me recognition as a dancer, choreographer and a teacher. I have had so many beautiful memories with all of my celebrity partners! They all have shaped me into the person that I am today.”

Chigvintsev’s exclusion was anticipated after he and his girlfriend and Season 25 partner, Nikki Bella, heavily implied as such on Instagram over the weekend after he had a mysterious “bad day” and she spoke of new beginnings professionally and personally.

Burgess’ absence was not hinted at beforehand, but she had been one of the longer-tenured pros of the current crop, having been on every season since Season 16, and she finally got her (controversial) win last season with Bobby Bones.

SEE ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Season 28 cast revealed: James Van Der Beek, Karamo Brown and Sean freakin’ Spicer?!

“As I’m sure you’ve heard, I will not be returning to @dancingabc this season. I am unbelievably sad to not be back!!!” she wrote. “However, what i can whole heartedly tell you is that It’s all good, ALL love and in this moment I can’t help but be grateful for the time and the journey that I’ve had, the people I’ve met, the incredible talent I’ve shared the stage with and the memories I’ve made. To say the least.. it’s been epic. ♥️ and to have finally won still feels as exciting and special as it did the moment @tombergeron said our names.”

Based on their statements, it’s safe to say skipping this season was not their choice. Burgess even dropped an “everything happens for a reason” in there. Both have a laundry list of thank you’s and things they’ll miss — fans, producers, partners, crew, etc — and their similar tone suggests that they believe they’re done with the show for good, especially Burgess, who has “things coming into my world that I’m excited to dive into now that I have time.” (She’s coming off a judging stint on the Australian version of “Dancing with the Stars.”)

Pros sit out seasons all the time, whether voluntarily or involuntarily, so it won’t be shocking at all if either one of them returns in the future. Hell, we thought Cheryl Burke was done multiple times and here she is, back again. Chigvintsev has also been burned by the show before: He was originally announced as one of the pros in Season 21 before he was dropped because of last-minute casting changes. That’s the only season he’s missed since joining in Season 19.

The pros who are on this season are Burke, Brandon Armstrong, Lindsay Arnold, Alan Bersten, Witney Carson, Val Chmerkovskiy, Sasha Farber, Jenna Johnson, Peta Murgatroyd, Keo Motsepe, Gleb Savchenko and Emma Slater. There are also two new pros, seven-time U.S. 10-Dance and Latin champions Daniella Karagach and Pasha Pashkov, who also appeared on “World of Dance” Season 2. If you’ve just counted up all those names, we’ve got 14 pros and 12 announced celebrities. So who knows what the show has up its sleeve since the partnerships won’t be revealed until the premiere.

“Dancing with the Stars” premieres Monday, Sept. 16 at 8/7c on ABC.

  • The Dancing With the Stars 2019 finale has finally aired!
  • Caution because spoilers are obviously ahead.

Usually, the only drama surrounding Dancing With the Stars is whether or not a fan-favorite celebrity with two left feet actually deserves to continue on in the competition, but this season managed to outdo all the rest. With controversial contestants like Sean Spicer on the roster and an early replacement for Christie Brinkley that attracted a lot of heat, this has been an incredibly bumpy season, as Karamo Brown can also attest to based on his ill-advised comments about the former White House press secretary.

But after Sean was finally axed and James Van Der Beek was controversially eliminated, a winner was crowned! Here’s all the intel you need on who won season 28 of Dancing With the Stars and who made the finals this year.

When the Dancing With the Stars 2019 cast was announced on Good Morning America on August 21, two familiar faces were left off the pro lineup — Sharna Burgess and Artem Chigvintsev. While Sharna has been rather cryptic about what happened and why she isn’t returning to DWTS this fall, Artem has been very open about it all. By the sounds of it, the network’s decision to not invite him back caught the longtime dancer completely off guard.

Why is Artem Chigvintsev leaving Dancing With the Stars?

According to Artem himself, he didn’t find out he was cut from season 28 after 10 years on the program until days before Wednesday’s GMA segment.

The pro dancer told Nikki Bella on her podcast The Bellas that he had been having “positive conversations” with the ABC dance show’s producers in the weeks leading up to the cast announcement. While there was always a chance he wouldn’t be asked back, he was “99% sure” he was going to be in the cast.

The Friday before the GMA announcement though, Artem hadn’t heard from anyone on the DWTS crew. Knowing something was going on, he called around 10 a.m. that morning and was told that the producers would get back to him. Around 8 p.m. that evening, Artem said he got a text from an executive producer asking if he was free to talk. When they connected on the phone, the first thing Artem heard was “Hey, we have bad news for you.”

Understandably, Artem is not thrilled with ABC’s decision, and likened it to “going through a breakup after 10 years.” Overall, “it was a massive shock.”

“I dedicated 10 years of my life to that company,” he said. “And getting let go three days before an announcement, that’s like a punch in the stomach, really.”

The feelings he expressed to Nikki were reflective of the message he sent to his fans on Twitter and Instagram. While announcing his exit from the show, he said it made him “sad” to not be a part of the DWTS crew anymore and that it’s been “so hard on me.” Moreover though, he is still thankful for the opportunity.

“I have had so many beautiful memories with all of my celebrity partners! They have all shaped me into the person I am today,” he wrote. “I will be DWTS #1 fan, cheering you all on every Monday night! Good luck to everyone on Season 28!’

Admiring Artem’s positivity through it all, former pro Anna Trebunskaya, who competed on 11 DWTS seasons, spoke out on Facebook about the show’s decision.

“There’s a huge casting process involved and a hierarchy of executives that decide these things and at the end of the day the pro dancers are a piece of that complex puzzle,” Anna wrote. “We’re not the ones making executive decisions, but we contribute and play a part to this great machine. It’s part of Showbiz or any biz for that matter.”

Meanwhile, Sharna, who also will not be coming back, said on an Instagram that she is “unbelievably sad” to not be coming back but promised that “it’s all good.”

“I can’t help but be grateful for the time and the journey that I’ve had, the people I’ve met, the incredible talent I’ve shared the stage with and the memories I’ve made,” she said. “To say the least.. it’s been epic. ♥️”

Everything to Know About Nikki Bella’s DWTS Pro Fiancé Artem Chigvintsev

Nikki Bella and Artem Chigvintsev are getting married — and having a baby!

On Wednesday, PEOPLE exclusively revealed that the couple — who announced their engagement earlier this month — are expecting their first child together. (Nikki’s sister Brie Bella is also expecting her second child.)

So who is Nikki’s future husband and the soon-to-be father of her first child?

According to Chigvintsev’s personal website, the 37-year-old was born in Russia and learned how to dance from his mother at a very young age. At age 15, he moved to gain more dance training in Germany, Italy, and England.

When he moved to the United States, he began dancing with champion ballroom dancer Giselle Peacock. The pair married in 2004 but split a year later. Chigvintsev also briefly dated Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inanba in 2006 prior to joining the series.

Chigvintsev competed on the first season of So You Think You Can Dance in 2005. He made it to the top 8 and later returned as a choreographer for season 2.

He also appeared in an episode of The O.C. and in the film I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, per his website.

After participating in major touring dance shows on Broadway and in the West End, Chigvintsev was cast as a professional dancer on British series Strictly Come Dancing in 2010.

Chigvintsev won his first season on the show with actress Kara Tointon. He appeared on the next three seasons and finished in 4th, 10th and 2nd, respectively.

In 2018, Chigvintsev made his first appearance on DWTS as a member of the Dance Troupe on season 18. Later that year, he was promoted to a pro dancer for season 19, thus exiting Strictly Come Dancing.

Chigvintsev competed in all but one season of DWTS between 2014 and 2018 before he was cut from the show ahead of season 28. He later said in an interview that “it was a massive shock.“

During season 25 in 2017, Chigvintsev was partnered with Nikki, now 36, and they finished in 7th place. At the time, Nikki was engaged to John Cena, but in 2018 the pair called off their engagement and canceled their wedding.

After the breakup, Nikki reconnected with Chigvintsev. In March 2019, the reality star confirmed their romance with an Instagram photo that featured her giving him a kiss on the cheek.

Nikki revealed on her podcast four months later that she and Chigvintsev were “boyfriend and girlfriend,” while the pro dancer said, “We’re in a relationship.”

In a December 2019 episode of The Bellas podcast, Nikki shared that she had recently met her boyfriend’s parents, admitting that she was “really nervous” for the milestone moment.

On Jan. 3, Nikki announced on Instagram that she had accepted Chigvintsev’s proposal during a romantic trip to France two months prior.

“Excited for 2020 and the next decade with you @theartemc ❤️,” she wrote in a Jan. 3 Instagram post. “I said yes in France in November! We have been trying to keep it a secret but really wanted to share our excitement for the New Year!”

While the the couple haven’t shared any details about their upcoming nuptials, Nikki told PEOPLE that having a child is “something I’ve dreamed of my whole life.”

“I’m going to have this person to take care of for the rest of their life and help them do the right things and just show them the way of the world,” she said. “That’s amazing!”

This seems like one of those times when a person really has to have watched a good amount of TV to know just who we’re discussing, as Artem Chigvintsev is by all accounts a very popular and very talented dancer. While he’s worked on a few movies it’s far more likely that you’ve seen him on one or more dance shows that air so regularly. He’s had the pleasure of dancing with some of the best and the most famous names in show business throughout his career thus far, and he’s also been seen, lately, as being attached to one of the more famous faces in the WWE, Nikki Bella. While some folks think this might be kind of advantageous for him it’s important to remember that Artem has already secured his own fame even if he’s not quite as visible to the general public as Nikki has been, and at this point there’s no telling just how long the relationship might last. But a lot of people seem to think that they do look pretty good together.

Here are a few things you might not have known about Artem.

10. After being eliminated on So You Think You Can Dance in season one he came back in season two as a guest choreographer.

He’s done well and been eliminated throughout his career since quite honestly that’s the name of the game and the judges are the types that will look at every little movement and tic within a performance to determine who’s near-flawless and who still needs to work on one thing or another. But he’s proven that he’s worth bringing back obviously since being a choreographer is at times far more important than being a dancer.

9. He has a net worth of about $2 million.

That really shouldn’t be too surprising since dancing is far more lucrative once one reaches the heights where Artem currently resides and learns how to make the system work for them. Plus, there is the practice of investing your money wisely and not burning through it at an accelerated rate.

8. He moved away from home at the age of 15 to gain more experience when it came to dancing.

There was a passion within Artem from a young age to dance and he didn’t waste much time when it came to following his dream. He made his way across Europe before finally coming the US.

7. A lot of his love for dancing comes from his mother.

His parents operated a dance studio and his mother exposed him early on to dancing so wondering where his love for the craft came from is kind of easy to find out since he’s been around this type of life for a long time now.

6. He didn’t focus all that much on his education so that he could devote more time to his dancing.

That’s not to say that he has no education, but he always knew just what he wanted to do. In many cases education becomes secondary to those that have a set passion and know that they’ll do whatever it takes to reach their goal.

5. Apparently he left Strictly Come Dancing due to the fact that too many people were trying to change a format that was proven to work.

On one hand it is easy to understand where he’s coming from since if you have something that works it’s frustrating to see someone come in and simply push it aside to try something that’s unproven. But on the other hand change is important at times and while one person might think something is working another might see it as stale and stagnant and in need of change. It’s a balance that requires a lot of compromise and too often it’s not reached.

4. He’s pretty active on social media and has gained an impressive following.

Artem does seem to stay up on social media and does have a few hundred thousand followers that seem to want to know what’s going on in his career and his life it would seem.

3. It sounds as though he’s worked as a choreographer on a few different films.

There are plenty of people in show business that know how to appreciate the skills of those that they’ve seen and value when it comes to choreography, particularly when it involves dance, and it’s not really surprising that he would have been tapped for his expertise.

2. As of now it does sound as though he and WWE’s Nikki Bella are kind of close.

A lot of WWE fans are still kind of wondering if Nikki and John Cena will ever get back together but at this point it doesn’t look like much of a possibility since she’s been seen with Artem. Things happen though.

1. He’s toured on Broadway and the West End.

Artem has plenty of experience in dancing and he’s managed to create a career that’s not only impressive but is also built upon solid foundations when it comes to his work.

It will be interesting to see how far his career goes in the years to come.

Congratulations are in order for WWE Superstar Nikki Bella and her partner, former Strictly Come Dancing favourite Artem Chigvintsev, who are expecting their first child together.

Nikki and Artem met after being paired on Dancing with the Stars in 2017 and the couple became engaged during a romantic trip to France in November.

But it’s a double celebration at the Bella household, as Nikki’s twin sister Brie Bella is also pregnant!

Brie is expecting her second child with her husband, WWE Superstar Daniel Bryan, and she and Nikki are due only a week and a half apart.

Speaking to People magazine, Brie admitted the sisters were shocked to find out they were both expecting at the same time.

“Wait, twins being pregnant at the same time?” Brie said. “People are going to think that’s a joke. We both are shocked. People are going to think we planned it, but you can’t really plan pregnancy!”

Former WWE Women’s Champion Nikki then added that at first she thought she wasn’t pregnant and was just getting “twin vibes” from Brie.

Nikki explained: “I was in yoga, and I kept getting this feeling that you need to take a pregnancy test, but I wasn’t even late yet.

“And so I’m like, ‘Why do I keep having this feeling? Am I getting twin vibes from her? Because she just told me she’s pregnant?’

“I didn’t tell Artem at this point. I just want to do this by myself. When I came back in, and it said pregnant, I had to sit down for a second.”

Nikki was previously engaged to WWE Superstar John Cena but the pair broke off their relationship in July 2018.

Last February Nikki and Brie, who also star in E!’s Total Bellas, spoke to Digital Spy about possibly returning to WWE to capture the Women’s Tag Team titles.

“You might not see us anytime soon, but you will see us down the road at some point eyeing those tag titles,” Brie teased.

“It’s just hard to live in a world where we’re the Bella Twins and there are Women’s Tag tiles out there. We will cross paths.”

But it looks as if the twins’ WWE comeback is a long way off yet.
