10 best mattresses 2018

Table of Contents

If you told someone 10 years ago that you were going to buy a mattress without lying on it in a store first, they probably would have thought you were crazy to spend big bucks on a product like that without first “testing it out.” Now, shopping online for a mattress that you’ll spend approximately one-third of your life on without trying it out first is becoming the norm for mattress shopping. Nearly half of the mattresses purchased in 2018 — 45% — were bought online, according to stats from the International Sleep Products Association.

This new way of buying the best mattress is fueled by the booming bed-in-a-box industry, our increasing comfort with online shopping and the understanding that spending a few minutes lying on a mattress in a store doesn’t help you gauge how comfortable it’ll be for you over time.

Mattress retailers understand that you need at least a month to determine if a given mattress is the best one for you, and most online mattress companies offer at least 100-night trials — sometimes longer — and some offer free shipping and returns, so it’s relatively easy to try a different mattress if the first model isn’t cut out for the job.

Even if you think you know what you want in a mattress, the buying process can be daunting. Some experts estimate there are at least 175 bed-in-a-box companies in business now, according to CNBC. That’s why we sorted through the data and reviews to come up with the 10 best mattresses you can buy right now.

Based on online reviews and research, the top choice for a mattress comes from Casper. But you’ve got other options as well — Allswell’s Hybrid Mattress is a good choice if you want to save money, while the Saatva Classic Luxury Firm is the way to go if you’re not sold on the idea of a mattress in a box. Learn more about these best-selling models and their differentiating factors to help you choose the mattress that best suits your needs.

1. The Casper from Casper Mattress

The best overall mattress

Trusted brand among bed-in-a-box companies Sleeps cool Low motion transfer, good for couples Relieves hip pain Not ideal if you’re heavier Stomach sleepers didn’t rank this model as high Casper Wave offers a more supportive structure

Think of a “mattress-in-a-box” company, and Casper is the brand that comes to mind for most consumers. That’s for good reason — Casper has put quite a bit of money into marketing. But the company backs up the hype with stellar products.

The Casper Original mattress is made with four layers of memory foam. It offers zoned support under your hips and shoulders to alleviate pressure. Although Casper performs well and is comfortable for all sleepers, it’s thought to be best for side sleepers and customers of a normal weight. It’s good for people who like to sink into a bed and have that feel of it “hugging your body,” says Tuck.com. It has a zip-off cover so you can easily wash that protector, without needing to buy a mattress pad.

2. Allswell Hybrid Mattress

A great affordable mattress

Quality mattress with a 10-year warranty for less than $400 Good option for kids’ rooms or guest rooms Sleeps cool Firmer or more stiffer than some reviewers expected No topper Lack of support around the edge of the bed

A direct-to-consumer mattress backed by Walmart, Allswell offers a hybrid mattress with memory foam and coils that some reviewers say delivers luxury at a modest price. Allswell’s hybrid mattress has individually wrapped coils so there’s limited motion transfer and special CoolFlow breathable foam that’s supposed to keep you cool while you sleep.

The next level up, the Allswell Luxe Hybrid ($645), has more memory foam and a plusher cover. Although the product descriptions say both options offer great support around the perimeter, not all reviewers found that to be true for them in either the Hybrid or the Luxe.

3. Saatva Classic Luxury Firm

Best box-free option

Good customer service No waiting time for off-gassing of materials Better support for heavier individuals or couples Good back support No memory foam-only option Higher cost than some cheaper bed-in-a-box options

If you aren’t keen on having your new mattress come in a box, the traditional setup of Saatva, a direct-to-consumer mattress company, might be the option you’re looking for. Saatva mattresses are made with innerspring coils that are individually wrapped, designed to reduce motion transfer. That means if you and your partner come in to bed or wake up at separate times, or he/she rolls around more than you during sleep, you shouldn’t feel them move as much.

Most of the materials Saatva uses, such as organic cotton, are eco-friendly. The mattress comes with a pillow-top layer, which is bolstered by memory foam and a dual-coil system. Since it doesn’t come in a box, you won’t have that “off-gassing” issue you tend to get with a newer memory foam mattress. Customers also appreciate that Saatva staffers deliver it and set it up, even hauling away your old mattress for free.

4. The Purple Mattress

Across-the-board comfort

Good for relieving pressure Reputation for overall comfort and sleep Good for anyone who tends to sleep hot and wants more airflow Made in the U.S. Newcomer to the mattress market Questions about durability Customer reviewers say it sleeps too firm

The Purple Mattress was founded in 2015 with a Kickstarter campaign begun by engineering brothers Tony and Terry Pearce, who have over 30 years of working on cushioning technology for consumers — from wheelchair technology to knee braces and footwear. They invented Hyper-Elastic Polymer foam, which could be molded to a shape under pressure, and redistribute pressure to other areas — a desirable effect in mattresses. This one-of-a-kind foam was the basis for the Purple Grid layer for their mattresses, that somehow works for relieving pressure and providing comfort.

Purple’s foam is designed to help with spinal alignment and flexes under pressure while promoting airflow, allowing you to sleep cool. The top layer has 2 inches of hyper-elastic polymer material in its Purple Grid, followed by 3.5 inches of polyurethane foam, and the base layer has 4 inches of polyurethane foam. Purple recommends ditching your box spring and using the mattress on their Purple Platform Base or a supportive bed frame.

5. The Helix Midnight

Customize your mattress choice

Low motion transfer Good support along the edge of the mattress Sleeps cool Great for customizing Longer break-in period Some reviewers say it sleeps too firm

Helix is known for its variety of mattresses that address specific consumer needs, and its website makes it easy for you to find the model you want based on a quiz of how you sleep and the level of firmness you desire. Helix can even recommend a model that suits yours and your partner’s needs.

The Midnight is Helix’s most popular model; it’s recommended for side sleepers or those who toss and turn all night. Helix makes the Midnight mattress with a breathable UltraCool top layer, a specialty memory “plus” foam to relieve pressure, then a polyfoam layer, followed by coils for minimizing motion transfer, and a base with memory foam. With all of those layers you think you’d wake up sweating, but Helix has been recognized for having the top choice for hot sleepers on a list of recommended side-sleeper mattresses on Sleepopolis.com.

6. Avocado Green Mattress

A natural mattress for those who want to go organic

Extended sleep trial and longer warranty than most brands “Green” mattress made with nontoxic materials Natural materials help you sleep cool No off-gassing High cost Light sleepers might feel this model has poor motion transfer

Just as you’ll pay more for organic fruit and vegetables, you’ll have to shell out more if you want to sleep on a nontoxic, eco-friendly, high-quality mattress like Avocado Green. The company’s organic mattresses are made with Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) Dunlop latex and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) New Zealand wool, organic cotton and over 1,400 steel coils. Consumers concerned about sleeping on synthetic materials and the off-gassing that’s synonymous with most bed-in-a-box brands will like that this brand is free of flame retardants and chemical adhesives, along with polyurethane and memory foams.

The standard Avocado Green mattress is said to have a “gentle feel” and a balanced level of firmness. If you prefer a pillow top, you can choose that plush “European-style” pillow top for an extra $400. Avocado even has a vegan mattress option that’s made without wool. Avocado uses materials that are sustainable and largely biodegradable, and it donates 1% of sales to 1% For The Planet to address environmental issues.

7. Leesa Original Mattress

The mattress that relieves pressure

Fits most body sizes and types Average firmness makes it good for relieving pressure Made in the U.S. Might be too firm for some Has off-gassing smell that may linger for longer than expected

Leesa is another “original” bed-in-a-box company that can boast its share of positive reviews. This mattress’s foam is supposed to fill in the gaps around your body when you lie down. Reviewers on NYMag.com say the pressure and comfort for those who prefer firmer mattresses was good, while others said the mattress felt “soft and plush.”

The mattress is made up of three layers of foam, starting with the company’s proprietary LSA 200 Breathable foam-layer topper, followed by a pressure-relieving middle layer and high-density foam layer for support. Customers like that Leesa’s mattress is designed and manufactured in the U.S. Some customers who gave Leesa low reviews said the mattress was too firm for them, and the off-gassing smell seemed to linger for weeks. The company donates one mattress to charity for every 10 sold and plants a tree for each mattress sold.

8. Layla Memory Foam Mattress

Easy to choose between soft and firm

Good for side sleepers who aren’t sure how firm a mattress they prefer Multiple options for firmness levels in one bed Lifetime warranty Edge support isn’t great Not the most recommended option for heavier sleepers

Layla sets itself apart from other bed-in-a-box mattresses with the Copper Gel particles that are infused into the memory foam, and that its mattress features a soft side or a firm side. This flippable mattress was named “best memory foam mattress for side sleepers” in a Sleepopolis review.

The Cooper Gel in the memory foam activates to provide support at deep compression areas while also providing an overall “plush” feel. A Thermagel cover will help you sleep cool, but it’s activated only if it senses heat or moisture.

9. Nectar Memory Foam Mattress

Popular option for hot sleepers

Long trial period Good price Free shipping and returns Solid choice for all sleepers Customer service could be improved Some reviewers say it’s too firm

The Nectar mattress is another solid middle-of-the-road choice and is well-regarded for its value. Nectar Sleep is newer to the mattress-in-a-box world, and this mattress comes with a one-year trial period, along with free shipping and returns, so commitment-phobics should rest easy if they buy this and aren’t happy with the product. Nectar also offers a “forever” warranty, which means they stand behind their product’s construction and materials.

This medium-firm mattress is designed to relieve pressure points, and evenly distribute your weight with its three layers memory foam, including gel memory foam, breathable base layers and a bottom mattress cover to help it stay put on your frame. The quilted Tencel cover provides breathability and should help you stay cool so you don’t wake up in a pool of perspiration in the middle-of-the night.

(Image credit: Tuft & Needle )

10. Tuft & Needle Original Mattress

Good for couples with different sleeping styles

Customers rave about the customer service Good for overall pressure relief Experienced company Edge support isn’t great Complaints about back pain in some customer reviewers

Tuft & Needle has been around since 2012, and its T&N Original mattress has more than 130,000 reviews on Amazon, Google and Yelp. Many of the positive reviews rave about the company’s customer service. Tuft & Needle makes its mattresses with two layers of its proprietary foam, one layer being an adaptive cooling gel and the other a graphite foam that promises to keep you cool, wicking body heat away from you. This mattress has a soft, plushy feel but it’s also supposed to provide pressure relief if you switch from your back to your side to your stomach. It’s a good option for couples with different sleeping styles.

What to consider when shopping for mattresses

Any mattress’s comfort level is relative, and each consumer (and mattress company) may gauge a firmness level differently. What feels supportive and pressure-relieving to me may feel too firm to you, even if we’re both side sleepers and about the same height and weight. Keep that in mind when noting our “firmness gauge” from 1 to 10, with 10 being the firmest. (Be aware that firmness ratings aren’t regulated and can vary across brands.)

As you read about each mattress’s materials, know that most bed-in-a-box varieties are memory-foam mattresses. Some variations are hybrid models, which may contain memory foam, innersprings or latex. Other (conventional) mattresses are made with innersprings or coils, while some mattresses are made with latex for someone who seeks a natural material option. Each material has its pros and cons.

Know your mattress sizes

We list the price for queen-size basic mattresses, but the options listed here are also available in twin, twin XL, Full, king and California king. Generally speaking, the bigger the mattress, the higher the price. Most of the twin mattresses are a few hundred dollars less and the king and California king mattresses average about $200 more than the queen size. Some brands, like Purple, also offer split king sizes. Hybrid mattresses and Luxe or Premier versions cost more than the basic/original mattress prices listed.

Should I Buy a Mattress Online or In-Store?

Buying a mattress online

Buying a mattress online can be very convenient, but it can also be confusing because there are so many choices out there. There are two main types of internet mattress retailers.

  1. Companies that only sell their own product, like Leesa, Puffy, and Nectar.
  2. Stores that sell mattresses from a bunch of different manufacturers, like US-Mattress.com

Places like US Mattress tend to have much cheaper prices on most of their mattresses than physical retail locations, though they have similar products. The main drawback here is that you can’t try it before you buy it unless you go into a competing physical retailer first, and then go home and get the lower price online (this is a good idea, by the way). Otherwise, there are either no returns, or a return fee if you don’t like the mattress.

This drawback isn’t true for the companies that sell their own product. Leesa, Puffy, and Nectar all have free trial periods with a free pickup.

Buying a mattress in a physical store

The main benefit of buying a mattress in a store is that you get to try out the mattress first. It’s important to check for proper support and comfort in a mattress, and you just can’t do that online. (Proper support means being in your neutral alignment, comfort means not feeling any pressure or discomfort). If you don’t know what you’re looking for, brick and mortar stores will have salespeople to help walk you through the selection process. Also, if you’re a good negotiator, you can get some of the best deals in a store, because most stores have a price match or a price beat guarantee. This can be difficult to do, because comparison shopping for a mattress is made difficult by the retailers, but if you’re good at it, you can save the most money.

Another benefit of buying in store is there is a physical place you can go in and get help with customer service if you need to. If you need to exchange a mattress protector, return a pillow, etc, you can often just go into the store.

The downside of buying a mattress in the store is that it can be an intimidating experience, and if you’re not a great negotiator, you’ll probably pay more money than you would at an online store. A lot of people don’t feel comfortable lying down on a mattress in front of people, especially not a salesperson who wants to sell them as expensive a bed as possible.

My recommendation on where to buy the mattress

This depends on the amount of work you’re willing to do to get a good deal. I have several recommendations.

  1. This method is the one I recommend in my guide to negotiating for the best price. Find the right mattress in a showroom, comparison shop online, and then go back into the showroom with the lowest online price and make them beat it. If they won’t, then go and buy it online. This takes the most work but gives you the best chance at getting the lowest possible price.
  2. If you don’t have enough time or patience to do suggestion 1, you can cut out the last part. Go into a showroom, find a good mattress, comparison shop online and just buy it online if the prices are lower. You don’t give the retail store a chance to give you an even better deal, but you also have to go through less frustration.
  3. Buy it directly from one of the online manufacturers like Leesa, Puffy, Nectar or Tuft & Needle. If you don’t like it, you can always return it and then go for one of my other recommendations. This is the lowest-hassle and quickest way to buy a mattress. If you feel overwhelmed by this whole process, there is nothing wrong with going this route first, and then if it doesn’t work, starting with option 1.

Our beds are made with a variety of materials to give you exceptional comfort and support, ensuring that your body is cradled without sinking. What is a Mattress in a Box?
A Mattress in a Box is generally a mattress that has been pressed, vacuum sealed and rolled into a long box. These mattresses are incredibly convenient since they come in a range of styles and are delivered right to your door, so you never have to set foot inside a mattress store. Also, assembly is incredibly easy so there’s no need for extra assembly fees. These beds are a perfect low-maintenance, affordable mattress option for people who crave comfort and peace of mind. Ashley HomeStore goes above and beyond the regular standard by even offering bases, bed frames and headboards with their mattress in a box offerings, so you can furnish your bedroom in a pinch.
Do I Need a Box Spring for a Mattress in a Box?
As a good rule, you should always defer to the manufacturer’s guidelines on what type of foundation or base is recommended for the make and model of your mattress. Because of constant sleep innovation, today’s mattresses are made to be used on a number of bases such as box springs, box foundations, adjustable foundations, platform beds, slatted bases and even the floor. However, box springs were made for double-sided mattresses that needed to be flipped to create even wear. Make sure you read your memory foam mattress in a box instructions since many are one-sided or are no-flip — and while it can still be used on a box spring, you can lay it on any hard, flat surface that is supportive and sturdy enough to hold it.
How Much Time Does a Mattress in a Box Need to Fully Expand?
A mattress that has been vacuum-sealed can be dressed with sheets and bed pillows and slept-on within a few minutes of being unrolled and opened. You won’t damage it or cause any harm. However, it might take a few hours to two days before the mattress fully decompresses and takes its final shape. After a few days, you’ll even notice that the mattress will change its density, becoming more flexible and comfortable with time. The law will tell you I entered adulthood at age 18. I’m not sure that’s true. It wasn’t until I was 20 and mattress shopping at Ikea that I felt like an actual grown up.

Mom wasn’t there to help me pick it out, and Dad wasn’t there to pay for it. That was probably for the best, though. My parents still sleep on a waterbed.

Thanks to several moves, a breakup and buying my first house, I have since bought a few more mattresses. Still, there are several things I wish I’d known before I bought each of them.

If you don’t have the good fortune of running into Amy Schumer — who bought an employee a mattress for letting her use the store’s bathroom — these tips may save you time and money.

9 tips for picking the best mattress

  1. May is the best time to buy a mattress: According to Consumer Reports, the mattress industry rolls out new products in June. In other words, by late May, around Memorial Day, most stores clear their inventory of older models. Keep in mind, though, that some mattresses feel different during different months. For example, in Montana (where I live), if the temperatures outside dips below freezing, my memory foam mattress feels as stiff as a board until I add body heat and give it a few minutes to soften.
  2. Cutting corners will cost you: During my first mattress shopping experience eight years ago at Ikea, I only spent $100. I was on a college student budget, so I went with the cheapest option. Today, I think it would be comparable to this model. I still shudder when I think about the nights I spent tossing and turning on something that felt about as comfortable as the bunk beds in my parents’ RV. I blame this mattress, which I slept on for about a year, for ruining my relationship with Ikea.
  3. Take your sweet time: One-third of your life will be spent sleeping. Keep that statistic top of mind when you’re mattress shopping for your specific needs. With so many models to test, it can be time-consuming. But, when you consider how much time you will spend on it, you won’t feel so bad for spending three consecutive weekends on the hunt.
  4. Empty your pockets: A few years after that Ikea nightmare, I had a bigger budget and spent a long day mattress shopping only to realize I didn’t have my apartment keys. Sometime during the day, most likely when I fell back and splayed out on a test model, they’d fallen out of my pocket. Fortunately, my boyfriend let me in. But going back and revisiting each mattress store the next day until I’d found them was embarrassing.
  5. If buying used, older is better: In this case, older refers to the age of the mattress’s previous owner. The one I sleep on, a life-changing $2,500 Tempur-Pedic (the mattress I have isn’t sold anymore, but the brand says this one would be a close match), used to be my grandmother’s. She didn’t have much to spend money on when she was in her 80s, and since she spent a lot of time in bed, she invested in a very comfortable mattress for her last days. The pillow-top mattress in my spare room — which Airbnb guests have never complained about — came from an estate sale.
  6. Get help picking the mattress, but assemble yourself: Last year when my friend Kayla moved her family from Hawaii to Montana she splurged on a Sleep Number. She got her number (how firm or soft her mattress should be) calculated in store and was sleeping soundly from day one. Her husband, who didn’t get his number calculated in store, spent about a month at home trying to find his on his own. She also said she wishes they’d saved the $280 they paid to have the delivery team assemble it for them. The setup instructions are in the manual (and online), and if you have a few tools and a little mechanical inclination, it’s not too bad.
  7. Read the fine print: I’ve never returned a mattress (although I probably should have). But, I’ve heard horror stories from friends forced to pay exorbitant removal and/or restocking fees. Most stores will let you return a mattress. But it might cost you. Also, that warranty may not be as worthwhile as it seems. Most warranties are prorated and many require you to use the mattress with a certain frame or box spring. They’re immediately void if you use things like heating pads or electric blankets. Also, remember that your warranty is only good as long as the manufacturer is in business.
  8. Cooling gel is worth the hype: When my boyfriend first bragged about his new cooling gel mattress, I laughed and rolled my eyes. I was convinced it was just a gimmick and that, if he really wanted to avoid waking up in a sweat, he should ditch his Eddie Bauer duvet. But, after sleeping on it, I agree that it’s great. The cooling gel isn’t cold to the touch like I initially thought. It’s more breathable than traditional memory foam, so body heat doesn’t get trapped and make it too warm for comfort.
  9. $200 can be all it takes: After experiencing that $100 Ikea nightmare, I made sure the next mattress I bought was at least $600 — as if price was the best reflection of quality. Almost a decade later, mattress technology is better than ever, and thanks to online shopping, pricing is more competitive. The idea of getting a comfortable mattress without dipping too deeply into your savings isn’t unheard of. In fact, 6 of Amazon’s top 10 best-selling mattresses have price tags under $200. Sure, you may not get to test the Zinus Memory Foam Green Tea Mattress before getting out your credit card. But that’s where more than 25,000 online reviews come in handy. Plus, one TODAY staffer slept on the best-selling Zinus for six months and said it’s the best mattress she’s ever owned.

Best Place to Buy a Mattress

Maybe you already know the exact features that your mattress should have, but you have no idea about the best place to buy a mattress. Knowing the best place to buy a mattress at the right place is just as important as getting a mattress with the right features because it determines how easy/hard the process will be, before and after the purchase. Most people complain of poor customer services when they call their mattress sellers with questions or complaints, and some go through a rough time trying to get the seller to honor the warranty or the return policy.

To avoid going down this road, you are better off buying your mattress in the best place. We are going to look at the various places that you can buy a mattress from, focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of each.

There are two main places to buy a mattress, online and in stores.

Generally, online mattress buying involves searching and ordering your mattress from your desk. It is hassle-free as you won’t be dealing with the sometimes aggressive sales teams. You also get the opportunity to read reviews from people who have actually used the mattresses and are willing to give genuine experiences as they are anonymous and they have nothing to gain or lose. You can also ask any question about the particular mattress or brand and get various answers from different people which helps you decide if that’s the best mattress for you.

Another thing, online mattress shopping comes with the advantage of offering a variety of mattresses to choose, from different brands and with different features and price tags. So, you are most likely to get the best mattress for you online without going beyond your budget. Often, the best place to buy a mattress is online.

What is best place to buy a mattress when you shop online for a mattress?

Company direct

Online mattress companies make a great place to start, and the advantage here is that you are dealing with the company directly with no middlemen. This means that you are most likely to get the mattress at a lower price and you are also able to ask direct questions and get direct answers because companies are less likely to sugarcoat anything.

Again, buying online directly from the company helps you rip some of the benefits such as a longer trial period and also a 100 percent money back guarantee in case you don’t like the mattress. Once the mattress gets in the hands of a middleman, some of these benefits changes and worst case scenario is where they switch the mattress labels, so you end up buying a certain mattress not knowing that it’s just a label.

  • Most manufacturers use this way to sell their product, like Nectar, Dreamcloud (Luxury hybrid model)

However, even with all the advantages of buying a mattress online direct from the company, there is one major downside which is the fact that you will not have a chance to try the mattress out before buying it. This, therefore, means that you have to do thorough research and ask all the necessary questions to be sure that you won’t be returning it. However, most companies have showrooms in their headquarters so if you’re lucky enough to live near them, you can walk in and try out the mattress before ordering.

This downside doesn’t mean that online isn’t the best place to buy a mattress because researchers indicate that trying the mattress in your home and tracking the quality of your sleep with a sleep journal or actigraphy using an Apple Watch or other electronic device is the best way to know if a mattress is best for you.

MarketPlaces refer to websites selling large varieties of products from different brands, and an example of an online marketplace is Amazon.com. You will find various mattress companies that have own company-direct websites also selling in online marketplaces because this means more exposure hence more sales.

One advantage of buying a mattress on online marketplaces is that they are able to offer fast shipping plus great customer service because they ship out large volumes of products on a daily basis. However, one possible disadvantage of buying your mattress from a marketplace is that warranties and trial periods change. For example, Amazon.com offers a 30 day trial period on most of the mattresses.

Special Stores/Hybrid Stores

Special stores refer to an established brick & mortar venue with an online presence, hence the term hybrid stores as it’s a combination of in-store and online shopping. This combination ensures that a larger number of potential shoppers is reached. One advantage is that you can try out different mattresses in the actual store, but the downside is that the prices at the in-store are higher than online as they are not company-direct. However, you can try out the mattress then order it online. Thus, if the online research on a particular mattress is not convincing enough, you can opt for in-store shopping as you will have a chance to lie on the mattress and feel it as well as converse with an actual person for instant answers.

Showrooms tend to be too expensive to maintain. Thus, most online brands do not have showrooms. However, there are still some online mattress companies that have showrooms in various locations, mostly the large cities and they allow you to walk in and try out some of the popular online mattresses. Some showroom has various brands, but if they are for a specific company, you will have just one brand to try out. The advantage of buying a mattress from a showroom is that you get to try it out, but the disadvantage is that the prices are always higher than online.

Department Stores

Department Stores do not just specialize in selling mattresses. They sell many other products as well. The advantage of buying your mattress from these stores is that you can shop for other stuff too and still get to try out the mattress before buying it.

However, the major disadvantage is that you might not have a wide variety of brands to choose and the prices could be a bit higher than online. Also, the available brands could be biased because it’s all about the relationship they have with their sellers as well as how much they are making. Sometimes it’s not just where you buy a mattress but also when you buy it. Do you know there are best times for buying?

Online vs. In-store mattress shopping in a nutshell

Does trying out a mattress guarantee anything?

One thing about mattresses is that 10 minutes of trying them out won’t guarantee that you will love sleeping on them for over one hour. It takes even months for one to decide if they like the mattress enough to keep it and that’s why most companies give up to 100 days of trial periods. Thus, if the only reason you have for wanting to buy your mattress from the store is to try it out, I am afraid you might still get disappointed with your purchase. That’s one of the reasons we think the best place to buy a mattress is from an online retailer.

How helpful are in-store salespersons?

Again, and this is so unfortunate, most sales representative are just after making the sales, and they will convince you to buy a certain mattress while they know too well that most people are not happy with it. And, don’t forget that the salesperson has probably not tried the mattress in their home either. However, if a person-to-person discussion about mattresses is your thing, then you should go for in-store shopping.

However, do your research prior, then ask all the right questions so that you know when you’re being misled. Also, their return policies prevent them from being the best place to buy a mattress so make sure you read the contract before you sign or buy anything.

Why online shopping

In this case, online mattress shopping wins for us for a number of reasons. First, anyone who is disappointed with their mattresses and is having a hard time resolving the matter with their seller will be more than ready to share their experience online, and this is where you know which sellers to run from. There is also a large community of sleepers online that are always ready to answer your questions without bias because they have nothing to lose or gain.

Online mattress’ prices

When it comes to mattress prices, online buying always wins because there are no middlemen. You will also have a wide range of mattresses to select, all with different features and available at various prices hence you are unlikely to go outside your budget. Online shopping is also very convenient as you do everything from your desk and wait for your delivery.

Amazon, for example, makes online shopping very easy as the steps to making an order are straightforward, and the customer support is very reliable. Also, for quick deliveries, Amazon takes the lead. You can get your mattress in just a few days depending on where you live, and the shipping fee is also low. This is because they ship many mattresses in a day and this helps cut the overall cost.

When it comes to warranties and return policies, online sellers like Amazon always honors everything words by word. In fact, some people even return more than three mattresses, and you will see the Amazon customer care support team reaching out to them for feedback on how they like their new mattresses. This is because online sellers know how one bad review can affect their sells as everyone will run to read the reviews before making up their mind on a certain mattress.

Wrapping up

As long as you buy your mattress from the right place, you won’t be worried about what if you won’t find it comfortable. However, you should do enough research or ask the necessary questions before ordering to ensure you find the best place to buy a mattress and avoid the hassle of reaching out to the sellers and asking for your money back or replacement. Some of the factors to consider when buying a mattress that you should have in mind before making the order are your weight, sleeping position, preferred materials, etc. You can see what other people say about the question of the best place to buy a mattress.

We’ve received a few messages of people wondering where the best place to buy a mattress is, or generally where to buy a mattress. We thought we would put together a quick little overview and comment on who might want to buy from each type of place. Shoppers certainly have plenty of options, and it really depends on their individual circumstances. Here is a a quick list of everyone’s options.

Mattress Store

This would be a place like Sleepy’s. Depending on where people live, there should be mattress specialty stores. They don’t have to be big chains like Sleepy’s, but every major metropolitan area will have multiple specialty stores. Here people can talk to a mattress salesperson who can show them a number of different brands and models. If people were to go to a store like this, I would recommend waiting for a sale, as they come fairly frequently. I would recommend going to a store if people really don’t know what they want, and they don’t want to do a bunch of independent research. Certainly if people want to try out several mattresses ahead of purchasing one, this is a great option. The stores will probably have very knowledgeable people working there to help people out.

General Furniture Stores

Stores like these may not have quite the selection as mattress specialty stores have. However, there are probably more of these available, so it might be much more convenient for people, depending on where they live. I don’t think the sales staff will be as knowledgeable, and the sales cycle will be different from a mattress store. A place like Ikea is different and will have its own brand of mattresses available.

Department Stores

This would be a place like Macy’s or Sears. The selection will be more limited, and the sales staff will be much less helpful for people. I would only recommend going to a place like this if people have few other options.

I recommend going online for people who are willing to do some research on their own. The potential to get a lot of savings is much higher by going online because the business model cuts out the middleman. There are more options than ever now (see Saatva as an example), and if people are willing to do a little research, there are some really great options for them available online.
Those are the big players. I probably left something out, but generally people have a lot of options available to them. If you want to do some serious research, I strongly recommend considering buying online. Otherwise, there are a lot of physical store options available to you as well.

Buying A Mattress Online Vs Store Buying

Buying a mattress online has important similarities and differences to buying in a store.

Buying Online Buying From Store
Try before buy D a Manufacturers that sell online seldom have their mattresses available in stores to try before purchase.
Satisfaction likelihood C c+ All other things equal, owner satisfaction rates are mostly similar whether the mattress is bought online untried or from a store following a try out session.
Price b C- Purchasing a mattress online can save as much as 20%.
Durable B C Consumers often report better durability and long-term comfort from mattresses bought online.
Customer service B+ C Customer service from online mattress retailers tends to be better in every way.
Full service delivery D+ A- While some online retailers offer full service delivery, FedEx or UPS is often the delivery method. Full service delivery is usually offered by store retailers.
Old bed removal D A- Unlike store retailers, online mattress retailers seldom offer old mattress removal.
Easy returns c+ B+ Return ease and convenience can vary significantly for online mattress retailers.
Return cost B+ C- Returns fees for store retailers tend to be more common as well as more substantial.

New Vs Traditional Mattress Brands

The mattress industry has changed significantly in the past five years.

This change is due to the emergence of many new mattress brands / companies, most of which operate exclusively online. Notable examples include Casper, Leesa, Tuft & Needle, and Purple.

These new mattress brands differ from the older, established and traditional brands – such as Serta, Sealy, Simmons, Tempur-Pedic, Sleep Number – in many ways as indicated below.

Newer Brands Older Brands
Time in business D+ A The traditional brands have been around for decades, while the newer brands on average are about three years old.
Available in stores D A Newer brand mattresses are sold almost exclusively online vs older brand mattresses which are sold mostly in stores.
Owner satisfaction B- C On average, newer brand mattresses have 78% owner satisfaction vs 73% for older brand.
Mattress longevity C+ c Durability / longevity for newer brand mattresses tends to be at least fair. For older brand mattresses, it is on average about fair but can vary considerably by brand
Price b C- On average, newer brand mattresses cost about $900 vs about $1800 for older brand.
Perceived value B- C- Older brand mattresses tend to have lower perceived value due mainly to their above average prices and often questionable lifespan.
Model variety C- A The newer brands usually offer one to three models – in contrast to older brands which offer more.
Customer service A- C The newer brands usually place emphasis on providing strong customer service.
Old mattress removed D A- Newer brand mattresses usually are delivered via FedEx or UPS meaning they don’t often offer old mattress removal.
No-strings full money back A D+ Older brand mattresses are more likely to incur a fee for a return.
Specs disclosed B D+ The newer brands tend to be more open about the specifications of their mattresses, such as layer thickness, material composition, and weight.
Marketing sophis- tication A- C+ The newer brands tend to place high emphasis on marketing which includes defining a target consumer and creating compelling websites and messaging.
Marketing accuracy C- B The newer brands are more likely to use exaggerated claims to describe their beds such as “perfect,” “world’s best,” and “universal appeal.”

Mattress Longevity

Mattress longevity or lifespan can vary especially by mattress type.

SEE THE FULL ANALYSIS at our mattress longevity comparison.

Mattress Heat Retention

At least 8% of people report that their mattress holds heat and sleeps hot to a degree that undermines sleep quantity / quality. Some mattress types have more heat-trap potential than others.

SEE THE FULL ANALYSIS at our mattress heat retention research.

Mattress Motion Isolation

A mattress with motion isolation localizes or absorbs a person’s movement, such as getting in / out of bed and changing of positions. A mattress lacking motion isolation sends a person’s movement across the bed to possible disturb their partner.

SEE THE FULL ANALYSIS at our mattress motion isolation comparison.

Mattress Off Gassing

Off gassing is an odor or gas that a mattress may release when unpackaged due to its chemical composition. Some mattress types are more likely than others to have a problem.

SEE THE FULL ANALYSIS at our mattress off gassing odor research.

Mattress Weight

The different mattress types can vary considerably in weight.

The advantages of a heavy mattress is that the mattress often feels and looks substantial and expensive. A heavy mattress is also more planted and less likely to move on its base requiring adjustment. The disadvantages of a heavy mattress is that they are comparatively difficult to transport, move, maneuver and handle especially for one person. Heavy mattresses are also often more expensive to ship.

SEE THE FULL ANALYSIS at our mattress weight research.

Pillow Top vs Non-Pillow Top Mattresses

The following table compares pillow top and non-pillow top mattresses based on actual consumer experiences. The findings apply mostly to innerspring mattresses.

Pillow TOP non- pillow top
Longevity/ durability d c 30% or more of pillow top mattress owners report significant sagging taking place within three years vs about 17% for non-pillow top mattress owners.
Support C B- Pillow top sagging can undermine support and cause back pain. Edge support can be lacking for pillow top mattresses, especially softer models with thicker tops; eurotops (tops that taper near the edges) perform better.
Easy to maintain d c+ Pillow top beds often require more (head to foot) rotation to maintain proper support / comfort and avoid sagging.
Affordable c- B- Pillow top beds are on average at least 25% pricier than non-pillow top beds.
Conforms / adaptive B D+ Pillow tops are more likely to contour well to one’s body and thereby reduce pressure and excessive firmness – especially for side sleep.
Side sleep friendly B C Side sleepers – especially those of average to below-average size – tend to be more satisfied with pillow top beds at least initially as they usually provide the softness that these sleepers prefer.
No sleeping hot c- b- About 9% of pillow top bed owners vs about 5% of non-pillow top bed owners report bothersome heat retention.
Easy to move on D+ B Soft pillow top beds with at least two inches of memory foam can provide significant resistance to changing positions and getting up.
